Confusion As Subsidy Returns, NNPC Pays N5.4bn As Under Recovery
User Avatar Forum: Oil/Gas
Posted by: Edoman - 08-30-2020, 06:18 PM - No Replies

Quote:Amidst confusion in the downstream petroleum industry, concerning its deregulation, subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, also known as petrol, has once again resurfaced, as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, weekend, said it incurred N5.35 billion as under recovery in June 2018.

Under-recovery, also known as subsidy, occurs when the pump price of petrol is lower than the actual cost price of the commodity. In this case, the NNPC, through its subsidiary, NNPC Retail or through oil marketers, sell the product to motorists at a particular price, which is lower than the cost of the product, and pay itself subsidy to cushion against the loss.

According to its Monthly Financial and Operation Reports for June 2020, released weekend, the NNPC said it had recorded zero subsidy payments in April and May 2020, after it had recorded under recovery of N43.31 billion, N20.68 billion and N37.66 billion in January, February and March 2020 respectively.

The confusion stemmed from the fact that the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, had few weeks backs, stated that the Federal Government had deregulated the downstream petroleum sector since March 2020, thereby relieving the government of the burden of fuel subsidy and giving oil marketers the freedom to determine fuel price, with guidance from the Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency, PPPRA.

Confirming this also, Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mallam Mele Kyari, had in April 2020, declared that fuel subsidy was gone forever, and that going forward, market forces would be responsible for determining the price of the commodity.

When contacted, Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division of the NNPC, Dr. Kennie Obateru, promised to provide further update on the re-emergence of under-recovery on its financials.

The NNPC June 2020 report further stated that in the month under review, the corporation earned N58.3 billion from domestic crude oil sale, from which it spent N5.35 billion on under recovery, also known as fuel subsidy.

The NNPC also recorded petroleum products loss of N1.4 billion; and pipeline repairs and management cost of N6.24 billion.

The NNPC, according to the report, also received N10.12 billion from gas and other receipts; while it recorded total remittances of N81.4 billion; spent N48.95 billion on Joint Venture Cost Recovery and Government Priority Projects; before remitting N19.46 billion to the Federation Account.

The reappearance of subsidy, according to the NNPC, was as a result of a rise in the price of crude oil in the international market, which affected the price of PMS locally.

The NNPC said, “In June 2020, the average crude oil price further increased by $10.04, or 34.7 per cent, month-on-month, m-o-m, to $38.97 per barrel. Similarly, the OPEC Reference Basket (ORB) increased by $11.88, or 47.2 per cent m-o-m, to $37.05 per barrel, while ICE Brent and NYMEX WTI rose by $8.36, or 25.8 per cent and $9.79, or 34.3 per cent, to close at $40.77 per barrel and $38.31 per barrel respectively.

“As reported in the OPEC Monthly Oil Market Report (MOMR), spot crude oil prices continued to rise in June for the second consecutive month due to improvement in physical crude market fundamentals and the gradual reduction in supply overhang. This development suggests that the first half of 2020 was ending on a more positive note than expected.”

The report added that the NNPC downstream subsidiary, the Petroleum Products Marketing Company, PPMC, sold 1.35 billion litres of white petroleum products, comprising petrol, kerosene and diesel, in the month of June 2020, valued at N134.22 billion; compared with 950.67 million litres, valued at N92.58 billion recorded in May 2020.

However, the report disclosed that the NNPC recorded a trading surplus of N2.12 billion in the month under review, dropping by 20.9 per cent, compared to a surplus of N2.68 billion recorded in May.

The NNPC report further stated that the corporation’s operating revenue appreciated by 32.05 per cent, or N76.39 billion to N314.72 billion in June, compared to N238.33 billion recorded in May 2020; while its expenditure stood at N312.95 billion, rising by 32.8 per cent or N77.30 billion, from N235.65 billion recorded in May.

The NNPC said: “June 2020 indicates a lower trading surplus of N2.12 billion compared to the N2.68 billion surplus in May 2020, when the world began a fragile recovery from the COVID-19 effect. The 21 per cent net increase in performance is attributed primarily to the 166 per cent rise in surplus posted by NPDC; reflecting ongoing global rise in market fundamentals for the second consecutive month.

“In addition, PPMC continued to enjoy the drop in average product landing cost as profit increased by 22 per cent; while takings from Nigerian Gas Company, NGC; Nigerian Gas Marketing Company, NGMC; and Duke Oil Incorporated grew by 16 per cent, one per cent and 127 per cent respectively.

“All other Strategic Business Units, SBU, recorded further loss positions with Corporate Headquarter, CHQ, deficit increasing by 71 per cent compared to last month due to increased terminal benefits made to retired staff, thus reducing the group surplus for this month.”

Illiterates dominate pharmaceutical businesses in Kano – Pharmacists Council of Nigeria

The Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) says the pharmaceutical business in Kano state is dominated by illiterates who endanger the lives of people who come to them for drug prescriptions.

The PCN said it discovered this after a field inspection exercise in majority of the local government areas in Kano State.

Pharm. (Mrs.) Anthonia Aruya, a PCN Director of Inspection and Monitoring told newsmen that the association visited 65 pharmacies and 931 PPMV shops during the three-day exercise and discovered that most of the medicine stores are owned by unprofessional who operate without any form of education.

She said the council sealed off 677 premises, comprising 41 pharmacies and 636 PPMV shops for not registering or renewing their premises’ licenses as required by the law bordering PCN mandate. 15 compliance directives were issued to three pharmacies and 12 PPMVs for “lapses.”

In her words

Quote:“Observations from the field indicate that many stakeholders open medicine stores at will without recourse to regulations.

Some could not write or read in English which makes one wonder how they are able to give the right medicines to the right patients.

Overall, there is a displayed lack of understanding of the fact that handling of medicines is firstly a professional service before consideration of the business component.

The PCN will follow the process through to provide required guidance to improve the level of service delivery in Kano State.

Those affected will be corrected and guided and those who meet the requirements, will be allowed to remain in the pharmaceutical business,” Aruya said

Trump Supporters, Protesters Clash In Portland, US. One Dead (Pics)
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-30-2020, 04:55 PM - No Replies

Quote:One person was shot and killed late Saturday in Portland, Oregon, as a large caravan of President Donald Trump supporters and Black Lives Matter protesters clashed in the streets, police said.

It wasn’t clear if the shooting was linked to fights that broke out as a caravan of about 600 vehicles was confronted by counter-demonstrators in the city’s downtown.

Police said the caravan had left the area around 8:30 p.m., and officers heard gunshots at about 8:46 p.m., according to a statement. Officers arrived at the shooting scene “within a minute,” police said, but the man who was shot did not survive.

An Associated Press freelance photographer heard three gunshots and then observed police medics working on the body of the victim, who appeared to be a white man. The freelancer said the man was wearing a hat bearing the insignia of Patriot Prayer, a right-wing group whose members have frequently clashed with protesters in Portland in the past.

Police said the man was shot in the chest. He was not immediately identified. It’s unclear who shot him.

Homicide detectives were looking for more evidence, acknowledging that several images and videos had been posted on social media.

“It is important for detectives get a full and accurate picture of what happened before, during, and after the shooting,” a police statement said. “If anyone was a witness, has video, or has information about the homicide, they’re asked to contact the primary detectives.”

“This violence is completely unacceptable and we are working diligently to find and apprehend the individual or individuals responsible,” Chief Chuck Lovell said.

Portland has been the site of nightly protests for more than three months since the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Many of them end in vandalism and violence, and hundreds of demonstrators have been arrested by local and federal law enforcement since late May.

In the two hours following the shooting, protesters gathered downtown and there was sporadic fighting and vandalism, police stated. Some gave speeches in Lownsdale Square Park before the protest petered out. Ten people were arrested, police said.

The caravan had arrived downtown just as a protest planned for Saturday was getting underway. The chaotic scene came two days after Trump invoked Portland as a liberal city overrun with violence in a speech at the Republican National Convention as part of his “law and order” re-election campaign theme. The caravan marked the third Saturday in a row that Trump supporters have rallied in the city.

Trump and other speakers at last week’s convention evoked a violent, dystopian future if Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden wins in November and pointed to Portland as a cautionary tale for what would be in store for Americans.

The pro-Trump rally’s organizer, who recently coordinated a similar caravan in Boise, Idaho, said in a video posted on Twitter Saturday afternoon that attendees should only carry concealed weapons and the route was being kept secret for safety reasons.

The caravan had gathered earlier in the day at a suburban mall and drove as a group to the heart of Portland. As they arrived in the city, protesters attempted to stop them by standing in the street and blocking bridges.

Videos from the scene showed sporadic fighting, as well as Trump supporters firing paintball pellets at opponents and using bear spray as counter-protesters threw things at the Trump caravan.

Quote:A woman identified as Mrs Chizoba Eke, who was declared missing in Rivers State, has been found, days after she was abducted.

Chizoba was recovered from a well on Thursday in an uncompleted building at Igwuruta community in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state.

The mother of two, who was kidnapped from her home along with her six-month-old baby on Monday, was thrown into the well after severe beatings by her abductor.

Luck, however, ran out on the suspect when he was intercepted with his victim’s baby by a team of policemen on a ‘stop and search’ operation at Omerelu, a boundary community between Rivers and Imo States.

Chizoba’s husband, Eke Eke, confirmed his wife’s abduction and rescue to Channels Television on Friday.

He disclosed that he was invited by the police to come to identify the baby, having lodged a complaint about his missing wife and baby.

According to Eke who hails from Imo State, the suspect is known to him in the area as Mr Chinedu and had attempted to rape his wife when she was pregnant.

Chizoba, who was in pain due to the head injuries she sustained, also narrated her ordeal to Channels Television.

She explained that the suspect came to her house, claiming that her husband wanted her to come to Chinedu’s house to collect some money.

On his part, the Pastor of the Assemblies of God Church in Omoduku, where the victim’s family worships, Reverend Clinton Orie, believes it is the grace of God that kept the woman alive for three days inside the well.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Rivers, Nnamdi Omoni, also confirmed the incident to Channels Television.

He said the Divisional Police Officer at the police station in Igwuruta informed him that a woman was immediately taken to the hospital after she was rescued from the well.

Omoni promised to provide more details on the incident later.

Senate To Bar FIRS, Customs, NBC, 57 Others From Getting Federal Allocations
User Avatar Forum: Market Place
Posted by: Edoman - 08-30-2020, 02:58 PM - No Replies

Barring any last-minute changes, the Senate is set to advise the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning to exclude 60 federal agencies from getting allocation from the national budget, starting from next year.

The agencies include Federal Inland Revenue Service, Nigeria Customs Service, Security and Exchange Commission, National Broadcasting Commission and Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone Commission.

The move, Sunday PUNCH gathered, was due to the conviction that the agencies generate enough revenue to fund their overheads and payment of salaries, and would therefore not need to be funded from the national budget.

Investigations by one of our correspondents on Friday indicated that the Joint Committee on Finance and National Planning had concluded plans to include the proposal in its report which would be submitted to the Senate at plenary on resumption on September 15.

The joint panel on Tuesday concluded a five-day interactive session with the various Federal Government revenue generating agencies based on the 2021-2023 Medium Term Expenditure and Fiscal Strategy Paper.

The panel, in most of its engagements with the heads of the agencies, expressed disappointment with their poor revenue profile, huge wage bill and poor remittances to the Consolidated Revenue Fund account.

The Chairman of the joint committee, Senator Solomon Adeola, told the heads of the agencies after the session that many of them had no business receiving allocation from the federation account.

He said the Senate would work out an arrangement to amend the Fiscal Responsibility Act that would stop the agencies from spending the money they generate as they pleased.

He said some of the agencies like the Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone Commission, had willingly pulled out of being funded from the federal budget, meaning they would no longer collect allocation for salaries and overhead from the federation account.

A member of the joint committee told our correspondent on condition of anonymity on Friday that the panel had identified 60 agencies that would henceforth be funding the national budget and be responsible for their overheads and salaries of their workers.

He said the affected revenue generating agencies cut across the agriculture, aviation, communications, education, energy, environment, health, maritime, media and science and technology sectors of the economy.

He said, “We want to put an end to indolence and wastage of revenue. Many of the agencies have more than enough to remain on their own but they are still being funded from the national budget. We are doing this in the interest of Nigerians because we are tired of passing budgets that are not implementable due to deficit.”

Adeola, in his reaction, did not confirm the exact number of agencies that would exit the national budget but said some had willingly agreed to pull out of being funded from the budget and that their list had been compiled.

He said apart from those who would be placed on zero allocation, some would henceforth bear their overheads and cost of executing capital projects.

He stated, “We have invited all revenue generating agencies and ministries that are directly affected to ask questions bothering on the document before us and to deliberate on how we can improve the revenue of the Federal Government.

“From what we have seen and witnessed, it goes to show that we have a lot of work to do in the areas of ensuring that all government revenues get to the coffers of the government. Frivolous expenditure being used to take away the revenue will be blocked.

“This is just the beginning of good things to come. Once this has commenced, we would have a lot of savings and seriousness on the part of the government agencies.”

He said they were trying to put together the cost of collection to be given to all the revenue generating agencies so the government could have enough revenue at its disposal to fund the budget.

“With the repositioning that we have started, we will ensure that all revenue generating agencies play their critical roles in supporting government’s programmes and policies,” he added.

The Director-General, Bureau of Public Enterprises, Alex Okoh, had told the Senate Committee on Privatisation in October 2019 that 600 Federal Government-owned enterprises gulped not less than $3bn yearly with little or no returns from them into the federation account.

During the just concluded Senate session on MTEF/FSP, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, the FIRS and Nigerian Customs Service projected to generate N43.5tn as revenue for the country between 2021 and 2023.

A breakdown of the N43.5tn projected revenue shows that FIRS planned to generate N19.1tn; NNPC, N19.5tn; and NCS, N4.927tn in the next three years.

Meanwhile, a member of the committee, Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, said the Senate would make the affected agencies see reasons why they should no longer be funded from the budget even as he expressed confidence that they would not protest against the move.

Buhari, who is also the Chairman, Senate Committee on Land Transport, said the action was being taken in the best interest of the country and that it was not a witch-hunt.

He added, “We know that when a change is coming, there would be some resistance but the most important thing is that the country is greater than anybody. What we are saying is that if we have a means to finance our budget we will go for it. We will let them see reasons why they should be removed from the budget.

“We know that the country is allocating billions of naira every year to buoyant agencies that don’t need the money. They are agencies that can conveniently finance themselves. There are lots of revelations during the five days that we held our interactions with the agencies.

“Many of them are generating as much as N20bn every year, remitting what they like, and they are still collecting money from the federation account to pay salaries and to defray their overhead cost. Apart from removing them from the budget, we will also make sure that they remit the appropriate revenue to the federation account.”

He said apart from the NCS and the FIRS that declare huge revenues, many other revenue generating agencies only remitted pittance from their collection.

He added, “As a serving senator, I was shocked when I saw the huge sums of money that many of these agencies are making, how much they are spending on frivolous expenditure and what they remit to the national purse. It is highly ridiculous.’’

MAN, NACCIMA, economists disagree, say proposal dangerous

Responding to the plan, the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria described the proposal as a dangerous move that would not only reduce the already low Foreign Direct Investments into the country but also make regulatory agencies to overburden businesses for funds.

MAN’s Acting Director-General, Ambrose Oruche, told one of our correspondents on Friday, “It is a dangerous move. The business community will suffer for it. The government should not try it because the businesses pay taxes for running the government. If this proposal is implemented, I don’t see investors staying in this economy.’’

While noting that such would impair the gains of the Ease of Doing Business policy, he added, “It then means that the agencies will be all out to make money from the business community since they are the ones sourcing for their revenue. Businesses will shut down and unemployment will rise.”

The Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture also described the plan as a wrong move, saying the Senate should rather engage the agencies in useful dialogue to achieve the desired goal.

The Director-General NACCIMA, Ambassador Ayo Olukanni, said, “The Senate should not go this way. Such move may in fact sound their death knell. It should rather look for more innovative ways to encourage these agencies to make them more productive and generate revenue.

“If properly funded, they (the agencies) can be challenged to generate revenue, using various innovative business models in collaboration with the private sector with effective supervision.”

Also, a Professor of Economics at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Sheriffdeen Tella, said he did not agree with the Senate proposal because it would make agencies independent of the federation account and their revenue and expenditure would be difficult to monitor.

He said, “All the money that is generated ought to go into the federation account. In that case, there is supposed to be budgetary allocations for all the agencies. They must have their own budget and they must not spend beyond the money they budgeted for.

“You cannot ask them not to be part of the budgetary system. This is so that we can track how much goes in and goes out. If you say they should spend as they generate, it means they are going to be independent of the federation account which is not good enough.”

According to an economist, Dr Ayo Teriba, if all revenues go into the government’s purse before the money is shared, it curtails excesses and leakages, noting that allowing agencies to spend their revenue and only remit a certain portion would be an aberration. ‘‘This is one of the reasons why Nigeria is poor,” he added.

Teriba, who is the Chief Executive Officer, Economic Associates, stated, “The country has moved towards a Treasury Single Account. The question to ask is; are the federal agencies the Senate is referring to part of the TSA or not? They are.

“Two, what is beneficial – to have a central budgeting system for all the agencies or to take some of them out to run individual budgeting system? It undermines accountability and I don’t know any other country in the world where any revenue generating agency has the autonomy to spend the revenue it collects.’’

LCCI, economist back move

However, the Director-General, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr Muda Yusuf, backed the plan, but cautioned that there should be proper monitoring to ensure accountability and prevent reckless spending.

He added, “There has to be a proper assessment to know the ones that have the capacity to generate revenue and fund themselves. So, if they have enough capacity to generate funds, why not, and the cost they incur must be realistic because some of them have bloated cost of operations.

“Some of them are really robust in terms of the revenue they generate, but we must carry out proper monitoring of what they generate.”

Also, a Professor of Economics at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Abayomi Adebayo, welcomed the development, saying it was long overdue.

“I think we are thinking right. Under the pretence that the income generated in those agencies are low, they keep using the revenues to enrich themselves as we have seen in many investigations carried out, whereby you see some of their directors strikingly rich while the government is getting poorer.

He said, “For instance, look at Customs, how can they be collecting subventions from the government considering how much they generate?”

Addressing the concern in some quarters that the affected agencies might be pressurised to generate funds by way of taxing the people more, Adebayo said, “It is nothing to worry about. There are principles that will govern any agency to regulate taxation. But I think anybody who can’t run such agencies should please resign to give room for people who can run them profitably.”

War is coming in Nigeria – Prophet cries out

Apostle Paul Okikijesu of the Christ Apostolic Miracle Ministry, on Saturday, said that God revealed to him that a great misunderstanding would come this year that may cause separation in Nigeria and result in tribal war.

He also warned that Nigeria may be colonized through debt to other countries.
According to Okikijesu, leader of the Northern and Southern region must arise to prevent a religious war that may lead to tribal war.

“Thus said the Lord: People should pray, so that Nigeria will not be colonized in a manner that will make the future generation to be paying debt of what is beyond their capability,” he said in a statement to DAILY POST on Saturday night.

“During the journey of Nigeria this year, a great misunderstanding is coming that may cause separation in the country which may result in tribal war. People should pray fervently, because various steps are taking place in secret.

“Thus says the Lord of hosts: I access all the surrounding locations. My messenger, religious war is coming. I have previously said that after the COVID-19 issue, it will happen and COVID-19 issue is presently subsiding.

“I have previously informed you and sworn with my heavenly throne. The people of the North, East and South should arise to curtail this issue because the religious war may lead to tribal war.”

Herdsmen: Water Resources Bill is Ruga in disguise – Gov Ortom warns lawmakers

 August 30, 2020
[Image: C007E669-8530-46B8-8F41-1B29769B48BA.jpeg]

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has described the National Water Resources Bill as another Ruga aimed at creating grazing areas for herdsmen along shorelines.

Ortom made the remark while also urging the National Assembly to reject the bill in the interest of the country.
The Governor said the bill which seeks to bring all water sources (surface and underground) as well as river banks under the control of the Federal Government through its agencies is anti-federalism and negates the right of Nigerians to their God-given resources.

Section 13 of the Bill, states thus: “In implementing the principles under subsection (2) of this section, the institutions established under this Act shall promote integrated water resources management and the coordinated management of land and water resources, surface water and groundwater resources, river basins and adjacent marine and coastal environment and upstream and downstream interests.”

However, a statement by Ortom’s spokesman, Tever Akase, described as “curious, the reintroduction of the National Water Resources Bill, which was rejected in 2018 by the 8th Assembly.”

The statement added: “The Governor is convinced that those pushing for the passage of the bill at all costs have a surreptitious motive which is not yet clear to other Nigerians.

“The bill, in addition to its provisions which are at variance with the Land Use Act, is a disguised land-grabbing legislation designed to grant pastoralists unhindered access to river basins, adjacent marine and coastal environments across the country.

“The Governor maintains that the bill is another version of Ruga which objective is to create grazing areas in the 36 states of the federation for herders and their livestock.”

Ortom also commended socio-cultural organizations such as Afenifere, Ohaneze and Middle Belt Forum for speaking against the reintroduction of the bill at the National Assembly.

He appealed to federal lawmakers to act as true representatives of the people for the sake of posterity, and to remember that the destiny of the country lies in their hands.

The governor advised Senators and members of the House of Representatives to toe the path of honour by rejecting the National Water Resources Bill like the 8th Assembly did.

Apostle Okikijesu releases fearful prophecies about Buhari’s family, death of Senators, presidential aspirants

Apostle Paul Okikijesu of the Christ Apostolic Miracle Ministry, on Saturday, revealed God told him that President Muhammadu Buhari will mourn if urgent prayers are not offered on his behalf.

He said Nigeria must pray fervently for the president.
In a series of prophecies he made available to DAILY POST on Saturday, the cleric also said that some presidential aspirants for the 2023 election may not see the end of 2020.

He also prophesied that political Godfathers in many states and more senators will die, as Satan had planned to kill them.

“They should pray against what can happen that can make the president of the country to bow his head in sorrow.

”They should pray fervently against whatever will make the president to weep. Pray to avert mourning at the Presidential Villa,” he said.

“The event will cause sudden great commotion and great tears concerning the President, his wife or his child. If they fail to pray, it will happen and the government of Nigeria will tremble.

“Thus says the Lord: They should pray fervently for the people who are making preparation to contest for the presidential seat during the upcoming election. Some of the aspirants will not survive the year, some of them will not live beyond this year. The way that I the Lord will take the journey of Nigeria will baffle many people.

“Thus says the Lord of hosts: Many of those in position of authority and the party leaders, together with some of the vocal people in Nigeria; Satan is monitoring them in order to kill them; so that they will not be alive till October 1st, 2020 which is the Independence Day of the country.

“Thus says the Lord: Though I have previously sent messages to the senators, however, Satan is still planning to cause the demise of one male and one female among them.

These are prominent people among them who have served for two terms; and their deaths will shake the nation.”

NAF Airlifts Conjoined Twins Back To Yenagoa After A Successful Surgery (photos)

Quote:CIVIL-MILITARY RELATIONS: NAF AIRLIFTS ERSTWHILE CONJOINED TWINS BACK TO YENAGOA AFTER SUCCESSFUL SEPARATION SURGERY AT FMC YOLA.

In fulfillment of the promise made on 2 January 2020, when they were airlifted from Yenagoa, Bayelsa State to Yola in Adamawa State, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) today, 29 August 2020, airlifted previously conjoined twins, Mercy and Grace Aeiygbenmi, along with their parents and medical team back to Yenagoa after a successful separation surgery at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yola.

The twins and their parents arrived the Bayelsa International Airport in company of the NAF Chief of Medical Services (CMS), Air Commodore Gideon Bako, onboard a NAF Beechcraft KingAir 350i aircraft. They were received on arrival by the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, as well as other members of the Bayelsa State Executive Council and the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the FMC Yenagoa, Dr Dennis Allagoa, who all expressed their appreciation to the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, and the entire NAF family for the humanitarian airlift as well as the support provided throughout the process.

The parents of the twins similarly expressed gratitude to all those who played various roles in the successful separation of the twins, including the medical teams at the FMCs in Yenagoa and Yola as well as the NAF personnel who participated in the airlift.

A Press Conference was held earlier in Yola, before their departure, to announce the successful separation of the twins. During the elaborate but COVID-19 compliant ceremony, which had the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Barrister Boss Mustapha, as Special Guest of Honour, as well as the representatives of the Adamawa State Governor and the Honourable Minister of Health, amongst many other dignitaries, in attendance, the CMD of FMC Yola, Professor Awul Abubakar, gave highlights of the key aspects of the process.

He noted that the successful separation of the twins, who were discovered to be joined at the abdomen when they were born on 1 December 2019, was as a result of collective efforts of medical professionals as well as support received from various quarters, including the NAF. He lauded the trust and patience shown by the Aeiygbenmis throughout the process, which, he said, contributed to the success achieved.

In his remarks at the event, the CAS, who was represented by the CMS, emphasized that the NAF would sustain its numerous humanitarian relief operations, including medical outreaches, to alleviate the sufferings of victims of insurgency, banditry and natural disasters, like floods.

He noted that the Service had, through such initiatives, provided free medical services to over 400,000 people across the Country, including Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North East. He equally disclosed that the NAF had established Level 2 Hospitals at the Bama and Dalori IPD Camps in Borno State, where it has also been providing feeding for over 1,000 school children as well as “Dignity Packs”, containing a complete package of sanitary items, for young girls.

Speaking further, the CAS noted that the NAF had also recently distributed palliatives to the poor and vulnerable members of its host communities to cushion the effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic, whilst also continuing to support the Federal Government’s COVID-19 response through airlift operations, provision of liquid oxygen, as well as the provision of its medical facilities for use as isolation centres.

According to him, “the NAF also conducted missions to distribute life-saving medical supplies and equipment to various parts of the Country, in addition to airlifting West African Health Organization (WAHO)-donated COVID-19 medical supplies to 13 West African countries using NAF C-130H aircraft.

Besides the delivery of supplies, the NAF also continues to play vital roles in the movement of critically injured individuals and patients requiring urgent medical attention to appropriate destinations”. He noted that the airlift of the Aeiygbenmi twins was one of such gratifying humanitarian airlifts. “It is heartwarming to see the girls enjoying life as independent individuals”, he added.

NBA CRISIS: South-west May Likely Follow North
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-30-2020, 11:48 AM - No Replies

Quote:THE crisis rocking the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is not going away any time soon. Apart from the formation of a splinter group in the North, the South West NBA with the highest number of lawyers has also not abandoned its threat to break away from the national body.

In protesting the outcome of the just-concluded election of the association, South West Lawyers’ Forum known as Egbe Amofin, unequivocally said it would likely lead its members elsewhere, if the election that produced new president, Olumide Akpata, is not voided.

In a letter to the Trustees of the association, Egbe Amofin, which supported the candidacy of Deacon Dele Adesina, SAN, alleged electoral fraud and demanded wholesale cancellation of the election. Responding to the petition from Adesina who lost the presidential contest to Akpata, a member of the Outer Bar, the Trustees, led by a former president of the association, Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, regretted the shortcomings of the poll, but pleaded with the petitioner to accept the outcome in the “larger interest of the NBA.”

Adesina and Egbe Amofin have yet to make their next line of action known regarding the refusal of the Trustees to void the election. Chief Niyi Akintola, SAN, a frontline leader of Egbe Amofin, who signed the Forum’s disavowal and threat to form a new lawyers’ association, told Sunday Tribune at the weekend that the Forum would meet this week to deliberate on the developing issues within the association.

He didn’t give a specific day of the week for the meeting and was certain a decision had not been taken. He lamented the crisis rocking the association, adding that the leaders of the Bar in the South West are monitoring the situation.

In the heat of the postelection protestation by lawyers from the South West, a name and logo of a supposed new association flew around. The supposed new association’s name was Nigeria Lawyers’ Association (NLA).

Another prominent South West lawyer not opposed to new associations coming out of NBA is Mr Femi Falana, SAN. Immediately after the disputed poll, he had penned an accusatory op-ed, condemning the process and the outcome, noting that nothing made membership of NBA mandatory.

Scion of one of the longest-serving presidents of the association, Chief Ladi Rotimi- Williams, SAN is against factionalisation, but he insisted that if it must be, then it should be in a larger context. Quoting him, “First, I don’t subscribe to NBA being split.

We met it as NBA when we became lawyers and it must remain, except the country itself is split into parts and it is not happening. “I believe in an election someone must win and whoever loses should approach the tribunal or court. Two, (Olumide) Akpata is part of the greater Yoruba nation outside the South-West, so he is one of us. Three, Yoruba themselves are not united,” he said.

SERAP Sues Buhari Over Failure To Publish Details Of ₦800 Billion Recovered Loot
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-30-2020, 11:38 AM - No Replies

Quote:Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against President Muhammadu Buhari over failure to “disclose information and documents relating to the names of people from whom N800 billion in looted public funds have been recovered, specific dates of the recovery, and details of projects on which the money has been spent.”

The President had in paragraph 78 of his speech to mark the occasion of the Democracy Day on June 12, 2020, stated that: “the government has recovered looted funds in excess of N800 billion. These monies are being ploughed into development and infrastructure projects.”

In the suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1064/2020 filed last Friday at the Federal High Court, Abuja, SERAP is seeking: “an order for leave to apply for judicial review and an order of mandamus to direct and/or compel President Buhari to publish a comprehensive list of names of people from whom N800 billion in looted funds have been recovered, the details of spending of the money, and the specific dates of the recovery.”

SERAP is also seeking: “an order of mandamus to direct and compel President Buhari to instruct appropriate anti-corruption agencies to promptly, thoroughly and transparently investigate alleged payment of N51 billion of public funds into individual private accounts in 2019.”

Joined in the suit as Respondents are Mr Abubakar Malami, SAN, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, and Mrs Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning.

In the suit, SERAP is arguing that: “The court ought to compel the Respondents to disclose the details and whereabouts of the public funds. There is no legally justifiable reason why the information should not be made widely available to Nigerians, especially as the Nigerian Constitution of 1999 (as amended) requires the government in section 15(5) to abolish all forms of corruption. That means ensuring transparency and accountability in the management of public resources and wealth.”

The suit followed SERAP’s Freedom of Information (FoI) request dated 13 June, 2020 to President Buhari, stating that: “The public has a right to know how recovered N800bn loot has been spent, and the details and purpose of the alleged payments of N51bn into individual private accounts. Transparency over transactions by the government is critical to ensuring public confidence in the integrity of management of public resources and wealth.”

SERAP is also arguing that: “Granting the reliefs sought will ensure transparency and accountability, as the information sought to be published will reveal the truth of where money is going and why it is there, and allow Nigerians an opportunity to assess the impacts of any projects carried out with the recovered loot and the alleged payments into individual private accounts.”

The suit filed on behalf of SERAP by its lawyers Kolawole Oluwadare and Opeyemi Owolabi, read in part: “As a signatory to the UN Convention against Corruption, the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption, and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Nigeria has committed to ensure transparent management of public resources, and unhindered access to public information. These commitments ought to be fully upheld and respected.”

“Transparency and accountability in governance is in the public interest. Publishing the details regarding the N800 billion recovered loot and investigating the alleged suspicious payments into personal accounts would be entirely consistent with Nigeria’s international anti-corruption commitments.”

“The authorities are required to set the highest standards of transparency, accountability and probity in the management of these resources and wealth, and the programmes that they oversee.”

“Disclosing the details of projects on which the N800bn recovered loot have been spent and publishing a comprehensive list of names of people from whom they have been recovered, as well as investigating alleged payment of billions of naira into individual private accounts, would be entirely consistent with the oft-expressed anti-corruption commitments by the government.”

It would be recalled that BudgIT, a civic tech organization, recently reported that “the open treasury portal by the federal government allegedly showed that payments totalling N51bn were made into individual accounts in 2019.”

No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

SUNDAY 30TH AUGUST.

MAINTAIN YOUR FAITH

He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God (Daniel 3:25).

In Daniel chapter three, we find the story of King Nebuchadnezzar; his image of gold, and the decree that everyone worship it. When Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego wouldn’t bow to this golden image, he threatened to throw them into a burning furnace. But the three Hebrew boys were unmoved. They believed only in the God of Israel and wouldn’t give up their faith.

“We won’t bow to your god,” they told the king. “You may set up your fire; do what you have to do!” Their courage and doggedness made the King furious; so he commanded that the fire be made seven times hotter. “Our God is able to rescue us from the fire. But even if He doesn’t, we still won’t bow,” they added.

“All right then,” fumed the angry king, “We shall see!” When the Hebrew boys were eventually cast into the furnace, the fire was so hot that even the men who threw them in died in the process. Inside the fire, the bonds on their hands and feet burnt up, but they were unharmed by the fire.

They got up and began pacing in the midst of the fire, most likely worshiping the Lord. To the king’s amazement, there was a fourth man in the fire, walking with the three lads. The Lord had joined them in the fire and rescued them. Thus, neither King Nebuchadnezzar’s threat nor his brutal actions could stifle the faith of the lads. God ensured they came out victoriously.

Similarly, you must refuse to be intimidated or swayed by obnoxious laws or decrees enacted against the faith and Gospel of Jesus Christ. Take a stand for Christ; stick to His Word and watch Him do great wonders in, and through your life. Focus on pleasing Him, doing what He wants. Don’t be bothered by what people think about you or what they do to you. What matters is what God thinks. Therefore, love and serve Him with all your heart.

CONFESSION

Dear Father, I thank you for your Word is my life. Irrespective of circumstances and situations, I stick to your Word and follow your guidance and will for my life. Thank you for the blessings I receive and enjoy today, and for showing me the key to a victorious faith-walk, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

#AFFIRMATIONTRAIN

30TH AUGUST.

I affirm that God's divine power is at work in me. Christ is my life, my sufficiency, wisdom, and righteousness.

He’s made my life beautiful, fruitful, productive, and sound! I am a custodian of divine verities; money is a slave of my ideas.

I fill my mind daily with the Word of God, and as I do, my eyes are opened to see opportunities all around me.

I am not ordinary; the Father has made me prosperous and effective; a blessing to this world, and a dispenser and distributor of His righteousness, love, kindness, and goodness.

All the wealth in this world belongs to me, for I am an heir of God and a joint-heir with Christ.

The silver and the gold are mine, including the cattle upon a thousand hills; thus, I refuse to be limited by anything in this world.

I am a free-flowing conduit of God’s wealth and blessings to others, and I am plugged to an unending supply. I rule and reign in this life, independent of the financial systems of this world.

I am fulfilling God’s purpose and plan for my life, walking in paths that He’s arranged for me. He’s made all things I require for life and godliness available to me, and I celebrate the grace of prosperity and abundance that I enjoy as the seed of Abraham. Hallelujah!

The works of my hands are blessed and I am set on the path of permanent success and prosperity.

I do not know when the heat comes, for I am fashioned to flourish like the cedar in Lebanon. Glory to God. Hallelujah!

Blasphemy: Nigerians Drag Atiku, Peter Obi, Others For Being Quiet

Serial presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar, has been trending on Twitter for choosing to keep quiet concerning the young man who was accused of committing blasphemy against Prophet Mohammed in a song he circulated via WhatsApp in March 2020.

According to Nigerian Tweeps, the serial presidential aspirant who is considered vocal and known to air his concerns on policies and issues plaguing the nation has been quiet ever since the news broke that Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, the young man fingered for blasphemy, has been denied access to lawyers even as the 30-day deadline given to him to appeal the judgment lapses on September 9.

Atiku who took to Twitter to celebrate Arsenal's win against Liverpool has since been dragged for being insensitive, a religious fanatic like and political. The likes of Peter Obi and other presidential aspirants are currently being dragged alongside.

Enugu International Airport To Re-Open Tomorrow
User Avatar Forum: Market Place
Posted by: Edoman - 08-29-2020, 10:56 PM - Replies (1)

Quote:ALL is now set for the reopening of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, after over one year closure to effect repairs and upgrade the facilities to international standard.

The ceremony will hold by 10 am tomorrow and will be witnessed by notable Igbo leaders led the Southeast governors and members of the National Assembly from the zone.

The expanded and extended runway has been completed and wearing a new look. Finishing touches were being put on few things inside the airport building as at the time of filing the report, while the Aviation Minister, Senator Sirika was being expected at the airport for final supervision ahead the reopening ceremony.

The rehabilitation of the effort has been engrossed in controversy with intermittent stoppage of work for lack of fund. However, Igbo leaders led by the South-East governors and National Assembly members from Igbo land never relented. They mounted immense pressures on the Federal Government over the airport, lamenting the negative economic impact of the continued closure of the airport on the zone.

Based on the pressure and subsequent release of funds, the minister had made frequent inspection visits to the airport, just like the Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi who had literarily taken the project as his State project, making regular unscheduled inspection visits.

With the reopening of the airport today, air travellers from the Southeast, especially international travellers will have sigh of relief.

The reopening ceremony which will be done by President Muhammadu Buhari will be attended by the Southeast governors, led by their chairman, David Umahi and notable Igbo leaders, including members of the National Assembly from the Southeast and officials of the aviation ministry.

Group berates Imo Governor over non-payment of pension

A human rights group, Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has lambasted the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma for his insensitivity to the plight of the aged pensioners who are being owed months of pension arrears.

The group made her dissatisfaction known to the public through a press release signed by its Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma.

According to the release, the condition of the ageing pensioners was pitiable and left less to be desired.

It reads, “it is regrettable that the current Hope Uzodinma administration which ought to have continued from where Emeka Ihedioha stopped has not only worsened the situation, but taken it to a more worrisome dimension by beating, harassing, intimidating and physically assaulting the old men and women who embarked on a peaceful protest to fight for their entitlements.

“It is an aberration and height of betrayal that none of the so-called labour leaders in the state had the guts to condemn the flogging, brutalization and harassment of pensioners by thugs and hoodlums allegedly mobilized by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties, Chinasa Nwaneri from the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).”

The group further lambasted the state Commissioner for Information, Declan Emelumba for describing the pensioners as ghosts and illegal protests, accusing him to be the architect of Imo pensioners’ ordeal.

It also frowned at the involvement of the DSS, which according to the group, should have ensured maximum security of the pensioners.

RULAAC further noted with disgust that the staff of Imo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ISOPADEC) are also subjected to the same trauma of uncleared salary arrears.

The group called on the government to offset all the pension arrears or leave the people with no choice than to revolt.

Man Released After 44 Years In Prison For Rape He Didn't Commit In US (Pics)

A North Carolina man who spent 44 years in prison for a rape he didn't commit was freed on Thursday.

Mr Ronnie Long, 64, was a 20-year-old Black man living in Concord when he was accused of raping a white woman, Sarah Judson Bost, at knifepoint in her home on the evening of the 25 April 1976.

Long was sentenced to 80 years in prison for the first-degree rape of Sarah Bost and first-degree burglary by an all-white jury in the 70s.

Despite decades of appeals to overturn the conviction, and though DNA evidence obtained throughout the years pointed to his innocence, he remained in jail.

Long (pictured in his mugshot photo) was a 20-year-old Black man living in Concord when he was accused of raping white woman Sarah Judson Bost, now 54, at knifepoint in her home in April 1976.

The DNA evidence in question was that hair samples and clothing fibers didn't match those of Long's.

According to news reports, the evidence was not shared with the defense at the time of the trial.

In 2015, it was revealed that 43 fingerprints taken from the scene 'excluded' the prisoner as the source of the prints.

A request for a new trial was still rejected by the Fourth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals the same year.

Long was in court for a trespassing case and Sarah Bost, the victim, said she recognized his voice

[Image: 12225166_325055220imagea21598626785599_j...d6bd39a9cf]

Long was put in a photo lineup as the only man wearing a leather jacket, which was allegedly what was worn on the night of the attack, according to court records.

At the time, detectives said they thought the suspected rapist might have been among defendants in court on other charges the same day.

Long had an alibi for the time of the assault.

His mother, who he lived with at the time, and the mother of his child said he was on a group phone call with them.

He was getting ready to attend a party in Charlotte at the time of the assault, they said.

The 4th Circuit opinion, led by Judge Stephanie D. Thacker, cited 'a troubling and striking pattern of deliberate police suppression of material evidence.'

Mr Ronnie Long walks out of the prison 44years later.

Akpata, Sans Kick As Northern Lawyers Form Parallel NBA
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-29-2020, 04:49 PM - No Replies

Quote:The newly sworn-in President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olumide Akpata; and some other Senior Advocates of Nigeria have condemned the move by northern lawyers in the country to form a parallel association.

Some lawyers of northern extraction had, on Friday, formed the ‘New NBA,’ following the recent controversy that trailed the withdrawal of an invite to the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, as a guest speaker at the association’s conference.

The breakaway group, in a statement by two lawyers, Nuhu Ibrahim (Convener 1) and Abdulbasit Suleiman (Convener 2), explained that the formation of the ‘New NBA’ was aimed at protecting their interests as enshrined under Section 40 of the constitution.

But the NBA president, in his inaugural speech on Friday, described the secession moves within the association as unfortunate and called for unity.

Akpata said, “I am not unaware of very recent events and agitations that have tended to divide our Bar along regional and religious lines. This is rather unfortunate for an egalitarian Association like ours.

“The Bar that I want to lead, henceforth, is one that is united on all fronts and that recognises that our diversity is, perhaps, our greatest strength. I plead with all Nigerian lawyers to bear this philosophy of unity in mind as we commence a new journey together today.”

In the same vein, Mr Tayo Oyetibo, SAN, in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, noted that, although any group of persons could form an association, due to the right to freedom of association, the factionalised NBA might not stand the test of time.

Oyetibo said, “I can’t condemn any group of people who want to form an association because there is freedom of association and it’s their constitutional right.

“But the NBA has been in existence since the beginning of time and still remains the main focus of Nigerian lawyers. Whether it (New NBA) will stand is another thing.”

He maintained that there was only one association of Nigerian lawyers acceptable to everyone.

“What are their goals? What are their motives for setting up a faction? For now, all lawyers belong to the NBA.

“The NBA remains the official body acceptable to all lawyers, but if a sectional group arises, it can only remain sectional.”

Another SAN, Yusuf Ali, said, “It is normal in an organisation to have disagreements but it is not every disagreement that must lead to disintegration or factions. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Even as much as I have my own reservations, it does not mean that we now have to engage in the balkanisation of the association of the body of lawyers in the country. We should not allow our differences, particularly on ethnic and religious issues, to undermine our unity.”

Similarly, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, who spoke at the handover of the NBA leadership on Friday, advised aggrieved members against forming an alternative association, vowing such a move would be resisted.

Ozekhome said, “So, drop all these issues of trying to form an alternative Bar, whether you call it new NBA or progressive NBA, it’s not going to work.

“The reason is that when you begin to create a different Bar, calling it, for example, Northern Bar or new Bar, then people, very soon, are going to start calling for Southern Nigerian Army, Southern Nigerian Navy, Western Nigerian Air Force, Eastern Nigeria Tax Authority etc; where are we heading to? That is nothing but balkanisation of Nigeria and God forbid.”

The development comes barely a week after the NBA dropped el-Rufai from its line-up of speakers at the NBA virtual conference held between August 24 and August 26.

A petition to stop the Kaduna governor from attending the conference, which was started by a lawyer, Usani Odum, had garnered over 3,400 signatures on Change.Org as of 6 pm on Thursday when the NBA tweeted its decision to uninvited el-Rufai.

The NBA, in a tweet on April 20, said, “The National Executive Committee of the NBA at its ongoing meeting resolves that the invitation to the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, by the 2020 Annual General Conference Planning Committee be withdrawn and the decision communicated to the governor.”

The ‘New NBA,’ on Friday, cited the controversy over the withdrawal of the invite to the governor, saying, “What has been happening recently has exposed the inability of the NBA to manage and contain the heterogeneity of its members, as well as their various interests. Its penal powers have been deployed discriminately on the basis of ethnicity and regionalism.

“As a body of lawyers, who have undergone training towards ensuring the promotion and protection of human rights and liberties, the NBA is supposed to live above sentiments, regionalism and discrimination on any basis and of any kind.

“Therefore, the NBA cannot afford to be seen not to be upholding the rights and freedom of its own members, if at all it should be seen to be practising what it preaches. As the Hausa saying goes, ‘Idan Kura tana maganin zaho, ta yi ma kanta (If a hyena has a cure for diarrhoea, let her use it for herself)."

The ban on Okada operation and the Coronavirus lockdown led us into kidnapping — Abductors of Appeal Court judge’s wife in Calabar

Suspected criminals arrested for allegedly abducting the wife of an Appeal Court judge and killing her aide in Cross River state on July 4, have blamed the ban on Okada operation and the Coronavirus lockdown for joining the kidnapping gang.

Ekwele Agube, the wife of a judge at the Court of Appeal, was kidnapped by six armed men who accosted her along Ministry Road, off NPA Junction in Calabar, Cross Rivers State. They killed her aide identified as Glory Egbela before whisking her away to an unknown destination in their operation vehicle. She was released 14 days later, after her family paid N6.8 million as a ransom for her release.

Immediately after her abduction, operatives of the Force Intelligence Response Team (IRT) led by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, were detailed to investigate and track down the kidnappers.

The IRT made a breakthrough when it trailed one of the phone numbers used in negotiating the ransom to one of the gang leaders identified as Nsense Bassy a.k.a. Lion, When he was arrested, Bassey confessed to the crime and led the police operatives in arresting five other members, including the gang’s informant, cooks, and boat boy.

The suspects arrested are identified as Nsense Bassy, Edet Ene, Christopher Effaeyo, Etim Offiong, Bassy Effiong, and Luis Otubassy. Two locally-made guns and 15 live cartridges were allegedly recovered from them.

In an interview with The Nation, Bassey confessed that he led other members of the gang to kidnap two other persons, including a Cameroonian diplomat and an Igbo businessman. He said the victims, who spent one week each at their den, were released after a ransom of N2 million was paid for each of them.

The 30-year-old father of four and indigene of Akam Local Government Area, Cross Rivers State, said he took to kidnapping because he had no means of feeding his children during the lockdown which followed the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Quote:“I am a primary school dropout. My father has no job, my mother left me and I was left on the streets of Calabar to fend for myself. I couldn’t learn a trade; I was just roaming the streets. But five years ago, I met my wife and we became friends. I impregnated her and she ended up having four children for me.

I was doing menial jobs to sustain my family, but when the Covid-19 pandemic started and there was a lockdown, I had no job and my family was hungry. One of my friends known as Christian was the one who introduced me to kidnapping. I joined because there was no way I could get money to feed my children.

Our first operation was at White Market area of Calabar, where we kidnapped an Igbo man selling auto spare parts. We were six that went for the operation and we had six pistols with us. We kidnapped the man on the road. We took him to the waterside and I left him at that point and went home.

My other gang members were the ones who took the man into our camp, and it was Christian who introduced me to the gang that negotiated for the ransom.
Two million naira was eventually paid as ransom and I got N300,000 as my own share. I also bought cloths and food items for my children, and I gave a part of it to my brother who has no job. I also gave N50,000 to my wife to start a small business.

One month later, we kidnapped a Cameroonian who we found on the street trying to buy something. When we kidnapped him, Christian took the man’s car away and sold it. Later, we took the man into the creeks across the river but I didn’t go with them because I don’t know how to swim.

Christian was also the person who negotiated for the ransom and the man spent one week in our camp. Two million naira was eventually paid as ransom and I got N270,000 as my share. I bought my pistol from one Chris who sells locally made guns at Ikang area of the state and I used it for the third operation, which was brought by one Luis who is a friend to Christian.

They told me that the woman we were going to kidnap was very rich, and if we succeeded in kidnapping her, her husband or relatives would pay a huge sum as ransom. Luis was the one who monitored the woman’s movement. When we eventually kidnapped the woman, we had an exchange of gunfire with some policemen on patrol. I did not know that somebody died in the process.

It was when we were arrested that I heard that someone died.  It was Christian that did the negotiation for ransom, and he took N4.8 million first from the victim’s family and absconded with the money.

The boys who were looking after the woman in the creeks refused to release her. They insisted that they must get their share of the ransom before they would release the woman. I went after Christian and he refused to see me. Then he dropped the woman’s phone at a place and directed me to where I found it.
I then called the victim’s family, requested for another N2 million and they gave it to me. I called the boys at the camp then they released the woman for me.  I got N350,000 as my share and gave the informant N100,000.

A few weeks later, I got a call from pastor, who asked me to come to the church. When I got there, I was surrounded by the police and I was arrested.”Bassey said

On his part, the gang’s alleged informant and motorcycle operator, Luis Otubassy (25), who is also married with a child, said he took to kidnapping after the government enforced the ban on commercial motorcycle in Cross Rivers State.
Quote:“I am a motorcycle operator and I joined the kidnapping gang when the government banned motorcycle operation in Calabar. Nsense, who we call Lion, linked me to the gang and I was using motorcycle to carry the gang members around town to look for whom to kidnap.

On the kidnapping of the Appeal Court judge’s wife, I didn’t know that her husband was a judge. I thought she was a contractor.

I was the one who pressurised other members of the gang to kidnap the woman and her aide was killed in the process.
I was given the sum of N70,000 as my share. I didn’t know that they got N6.8 million from the woman. I was only looking for money to buy pampers for my child. Now I feel very sad that I got only N70,000 out of N6.8 million.” Luis said

Another suspect, Edet Ene (28), a native of Apkabiyo area of Cross Rivers State, said he was the gang’s boat operator and was responsible for ferrying the victims to the gang's hideout. He pleaded with the police to forgive him and promised never to do it again.
Quote:“I am the person paddling the boat into the creeks, and we used to spend 30 minutes on water before we would get to the camp. I am also the person that used to buy food for the victims. I am an orphan and I have no one to help me. That was why I joined the gang.
On the first day, they called me and I ferried their victim into the creeks and stayed with them.  I was paid N180,000 when ransom was paid for the release of the victim and I used the money to rent a house for myself.

My mother died while I was five years old and I do not know my father. I have been struggling alone all this while. I fell for them because I was hopeless. I also got N100,000 from the second operation and I bought a N70,000 mattress from the money.

I need the police to forgive me. I will never go into crime again.” Edet said

Insecurity: Buhari has failed, Yorubas should carry licensed guns – Gani Adams

The Aare Ona Kakanfo-in-Council led by Iba Gani Adams has again expressed concern over the rising insecurity in Nigeria.

The body declared that President Muhammadu Buhari has failed to guarantee the safety of lives and property of the masses.

In a communiqué after its meeting, the body told South-West Governors to direct Yorubas to obtain license to bear firearms.

Signed by Babajide Tanimowo, Atoloye Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, the council said it received credible intelligence which indicates “the infiltration of terrorists and killer Fulani herdsmen in the region.”
It cited the revelation that suspected ISIS operatives have positioned themselves in Niger State via Ibarubaland and within the Oke-ogun corridor of Oyo State.

“The intel also revealed that about 500 power bikes and assorted armour belonging to the terrorists have been physically sighted along the abandoned Lusada route moving towards Sokoto, from Igbo-ora in Oyo State.

“The Council, therefore, enjoin all Southwest governors, as well as the Governors of Kwara and Kogi States, to emulate the Governor of Benue State, Mr Samuel Ortom, by directing their citizens to apply for gun license for self-defense against the marauding terrorists and killer herdsmen.”

The statement advised the All Progressives Congress (APC) government to take urgent steps to tighten Nigeria’s entry points, especially the porous borders with West African neighbours.

It called for an immediate halt to all ethnic and genocidal killings in Nigeria, insisting that no nation prospers on the blood of the innocent.

“President Muhammadu Buhari, rise to the occasion and put a stop to the senseless killings in Southern Kaduna, Benue, Plateau and Taraba States, among others. Stop this senseless bloodletting now.

“The clamor by the Yoruba for effective and adequate security architecture for the region goes beyond Amotekun or any form of self-help. It is all about the preservation of our heritage as a race, our way of life, our patrimony, our culture and traditions.

“Since 1991, the Yoruba have been clamouring for resource control or restructuring as a basis for equitable co-existence within the Nigerian nation. The clarion calls have gone largely unheeded. Now, our people are sick and tired of the deafening silence they have been receiving over time.”

The council said for peace to reign, the Buhari administration should embark on an equitable restructuring of federating units before October 1, 2020, based on the recommendations of the Yoruba Submit Group at its meeting held in July.

It condemned alleged attempts by the government to “smuggle the rejected RUGA policy with its toxic provision to annex the ancestral lands of indigenous people with the active connivance of the 9th National Assembly.”

The communique also condemned “the outrageous intention” of the government to mortgage the ports in Lagos to China for a needless credit facility.

Reiterating that the unity of Yorubas within and in the diaspora is non-negotiable, the council urged the region’s leaders and stakeholders to bury personal ambitions and close ranks.

Nigeria will witness a turn around if an Igbo man emerges president in 2023- Ohaneze Ndigbo president, Nnia Nwodo

The President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Nnia Nwodo, says Nigeria will witness a turnaround in fortune if an Igbo man emerges President of the country in 2023.

Nwodo said this in a congratulatory message he sent to Nigerian-born Kelechi Madu, the newly appointed Minister of Justice and Solicitor General in Alberta, Canada.

In the congratulatory message signed by Emeka Attamah, his media adviser, Nwodo said Madu's achievement in Canada shows that if an Igbo man is elected as President in 2023, Nigeria will be transformed. He appealed to the Federal Government to stop marginalizing and victimizing the Igbos in the country so that their latent creative potentials could be harnessed for the good of all Nigerians.

Quote:“Ohanaeze Ndigbo is highly honoured by the exploits of Kaycee Madu in far away Canada as an Igbo son. Mr Madu had contested and won a seat into the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, representing the electoral district of Edmonton-South West from where he was appointed and sworn in as Minister of Justice and Solicitor General by the Premier of Alberta, Jason Kenney, on April 30, 2020.

On behalf of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, I commend the sterling qualities of Mr Kaycee Madu, as well as other Igbo sons and daughters who have excelled so much outside the country, such as the recently appointed first black Vice Chancellor of Leeds Trinity University in the UK, Prof Charles Egbu, and many others.

The exploits of Igbo sons and daughters both within and outside the country are indices of the cerebral capability and ingenuity of the people which Nigeria could exploit to advance its development.

The Federal Government should stop marginalising and victimising the Igbo in the country so that the latent creative potentials could be harnessed for the good of all.

Nigeria would witness a turn around in her fortunes if a president of Igbo extraction was allowed to emerge in 2023.” he said

Second Niger Bridge: Buhari Did What OBJ, Yar’adua, Jonathan Couldn’t - Adesina Femi
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion

Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

Quote:Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity on Friday gave details of how former Presidents elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deceived Nigerians with the Second Niger Bridge project.

In his weekly article titled ‘ My Mercedes Is Bigger Than Yours’, Adesina said former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo who ruled Nigeria from 1999 to 2007; Umaru Musa Yar’adua who was President from 2007 to 2010 and his successor, Goodluck Jonathan only used the Second Niger Bridge project as a campaign promise during the 16 year reign of the PDP.

He said “We can never say too much about the Second Niger Bridge. The existing one was built in 1965, and had become totally inadequate to serve as the artery between the southern and other parts of the country. When it is festive season like Christmas, come and see how people suffer on the bridge, spending hours on end, sometimes days”.

“The bridge became an object of fake political promises, particularly in the 16 years of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). It was like a pie in the sky, which they kept building with their mouths. Whenever elections approached, they would go to the site with hoes, cutlasses and wheelbarrows, pretending to dig the ground, all to win votes. Whenever the polls were completed, and they had swindled the people of their votes, they disappeared. Till the next election”.

According to Adesina, despite huge revenue from crude oil and spending billions of naira, the project was at non- existent level until President Muhammadu Buhari came in 2015. He added that the Bridge is now at 48 percent completion stage and will be fully completed in the first quarter of 2022.

“And they claimed to have spent billions upon billions of naira on the project. Yet, it remained at the blueprint level. Olusegun Obasanjo launched it with much fanfare. That was where it ended. Umaru Yar’Adua did not seem to touch it, maybe he did, maybe he didn’t”.

“Goodluck Jonathan said his middle name was Ebele, making him an indigene of the South East, where the bridge was situated. He said what would he say he did for his people, if he couldn’t build the bridge. He spent six years in office, and all he left were the ubiquitous hoes, cutlasses and wheelbarrows”.

“Enter Muhammadu Buhari. Without fanfare, without flourish, he set to work. The Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund (PIDF) was set up in 2018 to fast-track completion of critical infrastructure projects. And at the last count, the Second Niger Bridge was 48% completed, with the sights firmly set on the first quarter of 2022 as completion time”.

“The things we couldn’t accomplish when we were swimming in petro-dollars, we are now daring and making steady progress on, at a season of scarcity. That is what you get when the Captain of a ship has only come to serve, not to feather his own nest” .

Married man commits suicide in Rivers state

A 45-year-old married man, Chinedu Peter Ogwa, committed suicide at his home situated at Wokoma street in Mile 3 Diobu in Rivers state on Thursday night August 27.

The Nation reports that Chidinma Ogwa, wife of the deceased, said her husband started behaving strangely on Monday, August 24. She said he left behind a suicide note where he appealed to her and their children to forgive him. She said her late husband blamed his action on frustration, lack of business success, as well as inability to recover his debts among others.

In her words

Quote:“It all started on the afternoon of Monday, August, 25, 2020, when he called me from where he was then to ask me what we are going to eat that night, I told him not to worry, that I had already prepared soup. After a while he came back and met me washing clothes outside, he stood beside me and began to laugh.

I was like why are you laughing, he was still laughing, then he said to me ‘you did not know what I tried to do today’? I asked what did you tried to do and he said to me he was going to take rat poison so he could die and I shouted ‘rat poison, for what’? Then he told me that he was frustrated, people are owing him here and there, his business was not making any headway for 15 years he has been in business, nothing to show for it, yet on top of that, people are laying false accusation against him that he did this and did that.

“He continued and said, ‘today I had bought the poison and holding it in my hand to take I remembered you and my children, what people will say to you, how they will laugh at you and I and concluding that they have succeeded then I dropped it and walked away and rather decided to hand over everything to God’.

And I agreed with him he took the best of decisions and told him not to mind people and their mouths. This life is a battle, everybody has problems, it is not just us, please do not try that again’ and he promised never to do it again. Then he began to admire me and our children, and I laughed and we continued.”

She said her husband decided to take his life when she and the kids went to church for service
Quote:“On Wednesday again, the man after dinner laid down on the bed and began to make some declaration that “I plead the blood of Jesus into my foundation, I plead the blood of Jesus into my foundation’ repeatedly.

I got afraid because of the intensity of the declaration. I asked him what the matter was, he asked me not to worry and that it was a prayer point they prayed in the church he went to.

I was not comfortable with that, I sat beside the bed and suggested to him the needs for him to go for deliverance. It was then he told me that he has already done that.

I then encouraged him to come to our own church for our normal end of the month programme (we attend Watchman Charismatic Church) and he agreed that he would be in church the next day, being Thursday when the programme would begin.

On that Thursday, while leaving the house, he asked me to leave the key for him that he would come back home before coming to church and I did. But he did not come to church. It was when we got home we discovered the door still locked but his phone touch was on. There was no power supply, we knocked and knocked to no avail.

I went to switch on the generator and asked my 12 -year -old daughter to turn round and go and turn off the refrigerator before turning the changeover switch on.

It was when she turned on the light that she saw her father laying cold on the floor of the house with whitish substance mixed in foam in his mouth, she shouted calling out to me as I rushed inside.''  she said

His body has since been deposited in the morgue.

Trump could start a civil war by not leaving the White House if he’s beaten by Joe Biden - Veteran filmmaker Spike Lee

Veteran Hollywood filmmaker, Spike Lee has warned that US president Donald Trump could start up a civil war if he decides not to leave the White House if he's beaten by Democratic challenger, Joe Biden, in the November election.

The director's comments came in an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper on Friday August 27.

Lee in the interview said the "hate"that is spread by Trump is "heartbreaking." He spoke about the recent shooting of Jacob Blake, and how "black and brown people" and "black and brown trans people are being shot down like animals."

"We have so much hate in the world – specifically the United States of America," Lee said.
"This guy in the White House, and what he's done, and what this just, level of hate, Anderson, it's heartbreaking," Lee told Cooper.

Lee added that he "prays to God" that Trump is "out" of the White House on November 3.
"I think you talked about this, too. I have — I think there’s going to be shenanigans, some skulduggery that if he loses, particularly in a close vote, he might not want to leave,” Lee said.

“Anderson, are we coming to a civil war? Lee asked.
"The next civil war in the United States of America. I ask you that question.”

Lee admitted he "can't have a restful sleep" because "black and brown people being burdened, shot down, for no other reason because of their skin.

The BlacKkKlansman and Chiraq director's comments comes a week after Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Trump would "investigate ballots" before accepting the result of the November election.

"The president has always said he’ll see what happens and make a determination in the aftermath," McEnany said as she was questioned by reporters about Trump's unsupported claims that mail-in voting will cause fraud.

"It’s the same thing he said last November."
"He wants a free election, a fair election, and he wants confidence in the results of the election, particularly when you have states like Nevada doing mass mail-out voting to their voting rolls," McEnany added.

Usoro Bows Out, As Akpata Takes Over As 30th President Of NBA
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-29-2020, 09:58 AM - No Replies

Quote:….vows to resist moves to form splinter body

Mr. Olumide Akpata was on Friday sworn in as the 30th President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA.

Akpata is the first non-Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, to lead the NBA in years, having defeated two SANs in an online election the legal body conducted between July 29 and July 30.

Akpata was sworn in by the immediate past National President of the NBA, Mr. Paul Usoro, SAN, at exactly 7:05PM, in a ceremony that held at the National Headquarters of the association in Abuja.

Motion for the dissolution of the Usoro-led National Executive Committee of the legal body was moved and okayed at exactly 7:13pm, just as the new NBA President, performed his first assignment by swearing in other members of his cabinet.

In his maiden address, Akpata, said he would spend the next 24 months focusing on holistic reforms in the association, as well as welfare of lawyers across the federation.

He said his emergence as new leader of the legal body was “ochestrated by the Almighty who sees the affairs of men”, saying he would ensure a truly all inclusive Bar that would be deviod of class segregation.

Recalling that he had a near death experience in the past, Akpata, thanked God for the gift of life.

“God preserved my life for a day like this”, he stated, attributing his election success to massive support he got from young lawyers.

“I must acknowledge the role of young lawyers. I am eternally grateful to all the young lawyers who reposed their confidence in me. I will work hard with my team to justify this trust”.

While thanking the two SANs that also vied for the NBA Presidency, Akpata, urged them to support his administration to ensure that the association remained united as one family, stressing that it was the only way the Bar could be revitalized.

The new NBA President described himself as “a bridge”, saying he emerged to build rapport between the young and old members of the Bar.

He said it was unfortunate that some persons reportedly tried to split the association by forming an alternative body.

“This is rather unfortunate for our egalitarian association. I plead with all Nigerian lawyers to bear this philosophy of unity of the Bar in mind”.

He said the NBA must always speak with one mind.

“Now is the time to come together because a divided Bar is definitely a defeated Bar”.

Akpata said though his election was free and fair and reflected the wish of Nigerian lawyers, he said his administration would however embark on a holistic electoral reform with a view to addressing some glitches that were noticed during the election.

“We need to manage to our electoral process better”, he stated, and consequently constituted a 10-man election review Committee to be headed by Ayo Akitunde SAN, with Mike Igini as the deputy Chairman.

Aside stressing the need for effective database of lawyers in the country, Akpata, said he would tackle both the issue of welfare of legal practitioners and what he termed as “erosion of ethical values” in the profession.

“Lack of institutional capacity is what our association has suffered over the years. We have to hit the ground running immediately”.

He said the NBA under his watch would fight against the encroachment of works that are the exclusive reserve of lawyers, by members of other professions, including banks.

“It is no longer business as usual”, Akpata maintained, adding that the NBA would also facilitate justice sector reforms, including the yardstick for the conferment of SAN rank on lawyers.

Meanwhile, earlier, the former President of the NBA, Usoro, SAN, dismissed report on emergence of an alternative association of lawyers, as work of distractors.

He said: “In recent times, I have heard comments that suggested that some of our people may be looking at alternative Bar.

“We are saying that there is no alternative to a united and indivisible Bar. We are stronger together. Whatever differences we have, we have to settle them in house. There is no room for anybody to break away.

“I did not take the report I saw in the media yesterday serious.

“I am convinced that it was the work of distractors. We must not allow them. We must be one united and indivisible Bar.

“That is the only way we can truly protect and promote the rule of law. We must remember that the rule of law does not have any religion, ethnic or social class.

“We must avoid having to make our judgements and comments concerning the Bar, based on ethnicity, religion or class. We must avoid bring in those things that distract the outside world. We must not bring them to the house.

“We must kick them out and remain one indivisible Nigerian Bar Association”.

Likewise, in his contribution at the event, human rights lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, maintained that any attempt to divide the Bar would be resisted.

“I call them to drop all these issues of trying to form an Alternative Bar. Progressive forces in this country and within the Bar, most members who know where we are coming from will resist it”.

He argued that it would be similar to people seeking to create Southern Nigerian Army, Western Nigerian Port Authority, Southern Nigeria NNPC, among others.

“Where then are we heading to? That will amount to total balkanization of the country”, Ozekhome added.

Report had emerged on Thursday that some lawyers of Northern extraction had formed a new ‘Nigerian Bar Association’ with the aim of protecting their interests as encapsulated under Section 40 of the Constitution.

In a statement reportedly signed by arrowheads of the group,Nuhu Ibrahim and Abdulbasit Suleiman, they claimed that recent happenings in the legal body, including the dis-invitation of Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai as a speaker in the just concluded conference of the NBA, exposed the inability of the association to manage and contain the heterogeneity of its members.

The duo said the new group would consult other senior lawyers from the northern extraction so as to co-opt them into the new umbrella body of lawyers from the region.

‘I Disappointed Myself’: Fani-kayode Apologises For Harassing Journalist

Quote:
Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has rendered an unreserved apology to a journalist for the verbal harassment he meted out during a recent press conference in Calabar, the Cross-River State capital.

Fani Kayode also apologised to the Nigeria Union of Journalists, family members, friends, and colleagues of the Daily Trust reporter.

Speaking on Friday during a press conference at the Government House in Uyo, the ex-minister said he disappointed himself and everyone, noting that his reaction was undefendable.

“I’m deeply sorry for the manner I reacted to the said reporter. I was too hard on him. The question was mischievous, but I fell for it,” he said.

“I should have been smarter than that. I am using this opportunity to reach out to him, and I hope he will be kind enough to forgive me.”

“I disappointed myself, my family and friends, my colleagues and even my bosses, those who hold me in high esteem.

“I have regrets, it was not my finest day. No leader or public figure should ever react like that. I disappointed myself. I deeply regret it and I believe it will never happen again.”

This comes barely three days after Fani-Kayode branded the reporter ‘stupid’.

The reporter had asked Fani-Kayode who was “bankrolling” his recent tour of several southern states, a question that irked the ex-minister.

Babatunde Ogunbanwo: Buhari Has Failed Nigerians On Security – Anglican Bishop
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-29-2020, 09:46 AM - No Replies

Quote:Bishop of the Diocese of Ijebu South-West, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Reverend Babatunde Ogunbanwo, says the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has failed Nigerians.

Ogunbanwo made this declaration on Friday in his bishop charge during the first session of the fourth synod of the Diocese in Odogbolu, Ogun State.

He said Buhari’s failure was hinged on the continuous killings in the country, especially in the Christian dominated part of Kaduna State – Southern Kaduna.

The cleric described the President as ‘weak and clueless about insecurity challenges facing the country.”

He claimed the challenges of insecurity in the country had created fear in Nigerians, adding that the killing of Christians in the state emanated through ethnic conflicts.

The bishop, however, called on the Federal Government and international organisations to find a lasting solution to the resurgence of attacks by killer herdsmen, bandits, armed robbers and other security threats in the country.

He said, “We are quite concerned about the spate of unwanted killings going on in the Christian dominated Southern Kaduna, in Kaduna State.

“It is so sad that this cycle of unprovoked violence and destruction of human lives and property have gone unchecked for many years without much intervention from Nigeria’s security units, Kaduna State (Government) and Federal Government.

“From the look of things, it is becoming clear that the perpetrators of these murderous acts are on a mission of genocide and ethnic cleansing. The government has so far failed to prove to us that it is willing to bring a permanent end to this persisting carnage.

“The Christians of Southern Kaduna and the indigenous ethnic nationalities in that part of the country, like all other Nigerians, have a God-given right to live in safety and enjoy the blessings God has bestowed on their land without any fear of molestation and threat to their lives.

“It is also the duty of the government and its agencies saddled with the security of the citizens of this country to defend and protect all those in that part of our nation from their predators.

“We call on the Federal Government, led by President Muhammdu Buhari, to wake up from its deep slumber and end this bloodbath just as he promised he would do if elected. The international community too should not continue to keep quiet over the security situation in Nigeria, especially as it has to do with the targeted killing of defenseless Christians and decimation of Christian communities.”

'Innocent man is raped and killed' by parents of two little girls who 'lied that he touched them'

A man has been raped and killed by parents after young girls "lied" that he touched them below the waist as a "joke", it has been alleged.

Truck driver Dmitry Chikvarkin gave the girls aged 3 and 10 a lift to a carer at the request of their parents in Verkhnyaya Pyshma, Sverdlovsk, Russia.

However, when Valeria Dunaeva, 25, the mother of the 3-year-old, came to pick the girls, they allegedly told her Chikvarkin "had touched them below the waist".

Furious, Dunaeva told her partner Sergey Chabin, 33, dad of the 10-year-old, and the parents allegedly tried to take the law into their own hands.

Chikvarkin was attacked by three men, friends of the couple, and he later died from a head wound sustained during the attack, police in Verkhnyaya Pyshma, Sverdlovsk, Russia, have alleged.

A law enforcement source told Znak newspaper: "They found the man who previously gave a lift to the children.

"First, he was raped...

"Then they smashed his head with the same pipe, breaking his skull."

Police now claim the older girl, who said Chikvarkin, 48, had touched her and the other child was "lying" as a "joke".

A friend of Chikvarkin told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper: "He just wanted to help by giving the kids a lift, but he was killed. He would never harm children."

Dunaeva and Chabin, and Mikhail Ivanov, 27, have now been arrested on murder charges.

Local media have reported the pair are charged with "murder with special cruelty by a group of persons by prior conspiracy".

Police are also searching for two others who are reportedly on the run.

Daily Devotional for Saturday 29th August

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

SATURDAY 29TH AUGUST.

STAY FOCUSSED ON THE WORD

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith… (Hebrews 12:2).

The Amplified Classic translation of our opening verse says, “Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus….” What God is telling you here is simple: stay focussed on the Word! Jesus is the incarnate Word; fix your gaze on Him; don’t get distracted.

Recall the case with Peter and the Master when they walked on the sea; Peter began to sink when he took his focus off Jesus. If he had kept his gaze on the Master, he wouldn’t have been overwhelmed by the billowing waves and tempest (read Matthew 14:25-31).

The same thing happens to many today; when they allow themselves to be overwhelmed by problems and circumstances instead of focussing on the Word of God, they sink even further.

There’s no situation you can’t handle successfully with the Word of God. Make the Word of God your stay; live in the Word! Learn from Jesus; He lived the Word, even though He is the Word! He was focussed, and was never distracted from the Word.

He looked at the result of His faith; for the joy that was set before Him He endured the Cross, despising the shame. He didn’t care what people thought about Him; His focus was to carry out the will of the Father.

It should be the same with you. They may call you names because of your devotion and dedication to the Lord, but don’t let that affect you. If anything, be inspired to love Him more; be challenged to serve Him even more passionately. Don’t be moved by hard times and turbulent circumstances; hold on tight, with your focus on Jesus.

1 Timothy 6:12 says, “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life….” Don’t turn away from the Word. Isaiah 26:3 reveals part of the result of keeping your focus on God’s Word; the Lord will keep you in the peace of prosperity: “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”

CONFESSION

The Word of God is producing results in me by the power of God’s Spirit as I walk in my heritage in Christ! I experience the peace of prosperity because I live in God’s Word! I’m unflustered by tests, trials, and persecutions, because the Word makes me triumphant always. Hallelujah!

TALKINGSESSION

KINDLY SAY THESE WORDS OUT LOUD.

Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for making me a sanctified vessel of glory unto You. I thank You for dwelling in me – spirit, soul, and body, thus making me Your holy sanctuary! My life is for Your glory!

Thank You for giving me the grace-advantage. Excellence, glory, virtue, and success exude from me today because of Your grace that is at work in me. Everywhere I go today, I am accepted and highly favoured, for I carry

Your divine presence with me. I am growing in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. Hallelujah! I am a blessing to my world, ordained, and chosen of God to manifest His glory, wisdom, and excellence.

I function today as a burning and shining light! I am making the Name of Lord known, and turning men and women from wickedness unto righteousness; this is my purpose, which I live daily to fulfill. I am inspired by today’s possibilities and tomorrow’s potentials.

Through the Word of God, my mind is renewed and my spirit is enlightened to see my future and see the greatness, success, victory, and prosperity which God has ordained to be my day-to-day experience in Christ!

I am fully persuaded that greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world, therefore no adversity or adverse circumstance can overwhelm me because I am more than a conqueror. Hallelujah!

Wrestler attacks his bride at their wedding party after guests received racy videos of the bride accused of being escort

A world champion wrestler lashed out at his bride during their wedding party after guests received messages saying she was an escort.

Zaurbek Sidakov, 24, was getting married to Madina Pliyeva, 25, in Russia’s North Caucasus region, with 500 guests attending, when the guests received racy videos featuring the bride.

The videos were allegedly sent by the disgruntled wife of the bride's alleged billionaire tycoon lover.

The messages appeared as the groom’s male friends were throwing him in the air in a traditional dance, and while the female guests were celebrating the marriage in a nearby room.

Freestyle wrestler Sidakov, who was due to represent Russia at the postponed 2020 Olympics, then found his bride and pulled her away by the hair.

According to Daily Star, he left her weeping on the floor and the party was cancelled.

Madina was taken to hospital by her friends and family and is now reportedly hiding in Moscow.

Her father suffered a heart attack in the wake of the wedding scandal, according to reports.

The groom, who was declared Senior World Champion in 2018 and 2019, was taken away from the party by his friends and into the mountains to "come to his senses and not to do anything rash."

According to reports, the claim that his bride was an escort was a "complete surprise" to Sidakov, and came after guests provided wedding gifts worth more than £80,000.

An elderly guest said: "Perhaps in a less heated situation the reaction would not have been so extreme."

The bride’s friends strongly deny the claim that she had worked as an escort and claimed that her husband had not known about her past life, since they only met in late April.

A source told Daily Star: "She is from a wealthy family...it turns out that she had been in love with a married man and some of her friends knew that.

"However, it was three years ago. And the videos posted to guests are from three years ago too."

The bride had reportedly been the mistress of a Russian billionaire in his 60s who is on the Forbes Russian list.

The tycoon has not commented on the claims but is said to have now provided the woman with a luxury flat while she recovers from her nightmare wedding.

An anonymous source said: "Madina's older lover, whose wife had taken her revenge, rented her an apartment in Moscow and convinced her to lay low until interest in this story dies away."

16,000 Sign Petition Demanding Tinubu’s Probe
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Edoman - 08-28-2020, 06:54 PM - Replies (1)

Quote:Over 16,000 people have signed a petition on Change.Org calling on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to investigate All Progressives Congress leader, Bola Tinubu.

The petition, which was started a week ago by Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, had garnered 16, 243 signatures as of 9.30 am on Friday.

The petition is titled, ‘Calling on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to investigate Bola Tinubu for contravening the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act of 2011, by having bullion vans ferry alleged large sums of money into his house on the eve of the 2019 Presidential election’.

Omokri wrote, “Dear citizens of Nigeria, let’s take our country back by signing this petition to compel the EFCC to investigate and prosecute Bola Tinubu for contravening the Money Laundering Act, by ferrying bullion vans into his house. Don’t say ‘na today’, or ‘leave matter’.

“We as Nigerians must stop confusing cynicism for wisdom. If we do not fight for our country, who will? George Floyd’s death sparked a revolution in America and we joined. We did not say ‘na today’, or ‘leave matter’. You and I can make a difference with this petition. #EFCCMustInvestigateTinubu.”

Tinubu had while responding to questions on the bullion vans in his home, said he was free to give anyone money since he was holding no government position.

He had said, “Is it my money or government money? I don’t work for the government. I am not in an agency of government and let anybody come out and say I have taken any contract from the government of President Mohammed Buhari, APC in the last five years.

“They should prove it. I am on my own and I’m committed to my party. So, even if I have money to spend on my premises, what is your headache? Excuse me, if I don’t represent any agency of government and if I have money to spend…., if I have money, if I like I give it to the people free of charge, as long as is not to buy votes…..who are those watching my house looking for bullion vans? They must be mischief-makers.”

Several groups had in the last one year submitted petitions to the EFCC demanding Tinubu’s probe but there has been no official reaction from the EFCC.

The Convener, Concerned Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju; Ariyo-Dare Atoye of the Coalition in Defence of Nigerian Democracy and Constitution and Adebayo Raphael of the Free Nigeria Movement as well as many others had written the EFCC calling for Tinubu’s probe.

Adeyanju’s The petition noted that Section 7 (1) (b) of the EFCC Establishment Act 2004 gives the commission the power to investigate properties of any person that appears to the commission that the person’s lifestyle and extent of the properties are not justified by his source of income.

It added, “To the best of our knowledge, Mr Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a private citizen who ordinarily should not be seen with a convoy of bullion vans.

“The questions begging for answers are: What are Bullion Vans doing in the house of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu? ‪Who owns the content, believing to be cash in the Bullion Vans that were seen entering the house of Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the eve of Nigerian Presidential elections?

“Has the commission, based on its core mandates, investigated the source of the Bullion Vans? ‪Is Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s house, now a bank where bullion vans now take money to?”

We’ll no longer tolerate harassment of Nigerians in Ghana- FG

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, says the Federal government will no longer tolerate the harassment of Nigerians in Ghana.

Lai Mohammed made this remark while reacting to recent attacks meted on Nigerians residing in Ghana. Recall that two weeks ago, some Nigerian traders in Ghana raised alarm over the closure of their shops after they were asked to pay N1 million. In June this year, a part of the building owned by the Nigerian High Commission in Accra, was demolished by Ghanaian authorities.

In a statement released today Friday, August 28, Mohammed said over one million Ghanaians are resident in Nigeria and they are not being maltreated. He stressed that the Nigerian government will no longer tolerate the harassment of Nigerians. He added that the Federal government is already considering a number of measures to take to address the situation.

The statement reads

Quote:''The Nigerian Government is deeply concerned by the incessant harassment of its citizens in Ghana and the progressive acts of hostility towards the country by Ghanaian authorities, and will no longer tolerate such.
In this regard, the Federal Government is urgently considering a number of options aimed at ameliorating the situation.

The Federal Government has been documenting the acts of hostility towards Nigeria and Nigerians by the Ghanaian authorities. These include:
- Seizure of the Nigerian Mission's property located at No. 10, Barnes Road, Accra, which the Nigerian Government has used as diplomatic premises for almost 50 years. This action is a serious breach of the Vienna Convention.

- Demolition of the Nigerian Mission's property located at No. 19/21 Julius Nyerere Street, East Ridge, Accra, another serious breach of
the Vienna Convention.

- Aggressive and incessant deportation of Nigerians from Ghana. Between Jan. 2018 and Feb. 2019, 825 Nigerians were deported from
Ghana.

- Closure of shops belonging to Nigerians. Over 300 Nigerians shops were locked for four months in Kumasi in 2018; over 600 Nigerian shops were locked in 2019 and, currently, over 250 Nigerians shops have been locked.

- Residency Permit requirements, for which the Ghana Immigration Service has placed huge fees, far higher than the fees charged by
the Nigerian Immigration Service. These include the compulsory Non-citizen ID card (US$120, and US$60 for yearly renewal); Medical examinations, including for Covid-19 which is newly-introduced (about
US$120), and payment for residency permit (US$400 compared to the N7,000 being paid by Ghanaians for residency card in Nigeria)

- Outrageous stipulations in the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre
Act. When the Act was initially promulgated in 1994, a foreigner is required to invest at least US$300,000 by way of equity capital and
also employ 10 Ghanaians. This Act has now been amended twice, with the 2018 GIPC Act raising the minimum capital base for foreign-owned businesses to US$1m. Though targeted at foreigners, it seems GIPC's
definition of foreigners is Nigerians. The GIPC Act also negates the ECOWAS Protocol.

- Media war against Nigerians in Ghana. The negative reportage of
issues concerning Nigerians resident in Ghana by the Ghanaian media is fuelling an emerging xenophobic attitude towards Nigerian traders and Nigerians in general. The immediate fallout is the incessant harassment and arrest of Nigerian traders and closure of their shops.

- Harsh and openly-biased judicial trial and pronouncement of indiscriminately-long jail terms for convicted Nigerians. There are
currently over 200 Nigerians in the Nsawam Maximum prison in Ghana
alone.

The Federal Government will like to put on record the fact that even though over 1 million Ghanaians are resident in Nigeria, they are not
being subjected to the kind of hostility being meted out to Nigerians in Ghana.

Also, Even though the main reason given for the seizure of Federal Government property at No. 10, Barnes Road in Accra is the non-renewal of lease after expiration, the Ghanaian authorities did not give Nigeria the right of first refusal or the notice to renew the lease.

By contrast, the lease on some of the properties occupied by the Ghanaian Mission in Nigeria has long expired, yet such properties have not been seized.

Nigeria has time after time demonstrated its fidelity to the long cordial relations with Ghana. But indications, especially in recent times, are that Nigeria's stance is now being taken for granted and its citizens being made targets of harassment and objects of ridicule.

This will no longer be tolerated under any guise.''

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has arrested a 35-year-old teacher, Ibrahim Mohammed, of Unguwar Kadawa Quarters in Kano State for allegedly sodomising two underaged boys.

Mr Shehu Umar, the NAPTIP Zonal Commander in charge of Kano, who confirmed the incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Kano, noted that the command on August 25, received information that Mohammed sodomised his two underaged students at Unguwar Kadawa, Kwanar Dillalai Quarters in Kano.

“On receiving information, we swung into action and arrested the suspect and rescued the two victims.
He alleged that the suspect was married and has been an Islamic teacher for the past seven years.

”The offence is punishable under the NAPTIP Act. An investigation is ongoing, and when completed, the suspect would be charged to court,” he said, adding that the victims will also be united with their parents.
Meanwhile, the command confirmed that it rescued six victims and arrested one suspect for human trafficking in Kano.

Umar explained that the NAPTIP Joint Board Task Force (JBTF) received intelligence information on the movement of the victims and suspect.

“On receiving information, the command carried out an operation on August 23, raided New Paradise Hotel in Sabon Gari Kano, which led to the arrest of the suspect, one at large and rescued the victims.”

”The victims were camped at the said hotel for onward movement out of Kano to Libya.

”The victims are from Ogun, Oyo, Imo and Abia. The offence, external trafficking, is contrary to section 15(b) of NAPTIP Act.”

Umar called on the general public, especially parents, to ensure they know the whereabouts of their wards and to always check on them periodically at the various Almajiri schools.

CAMA: Joshua Iginla spits fire, says pastors will die to prevent Buhari’s new law

The General Overseer of Champions Royal Assembly, Brother Joshua Iginla has reacted to the Companies And Allied Matters Act (CAMA) signed into law by the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.

Under the law, religious bodies, and charity organisations will be strictly regulated by the registrar-general of Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and a supervising minister.

Section 839 (1) and (2) of the CAMA law provides that the commission may by order, suspend the trustees of an association or a religious body and appoint an interim manager or managers to coordinate its affairs where it reasonably believes that there has been any misconduct or mismanagement, or where the affairs of the association are being run fraudulently or where it is necessary or desirable for the purpose of public interest.

While reacting to this development, Iginla blamed some church leaders for creating division in Christianity, thereby allowing the government to trample on churches without fear.

He lambasted them for having unnecessary doctrinal argument when there are other issues to deal with
“One of the reasons the body of Christ in Nigeria is having problem is because we don’t know our capacity. We have lost focus and spent time having doctrinal argument. We are the light of Nigeria.

“If we want to ensure that a Christian becomes the president of this country, we have the capacity but we are so self-centered and divided that we are running to people that should be running to us, everything doesn’t end in prayer, there are things we don’t need prayer for in Nigeria. We have the capacity to strengthen things but the church has lost her tastes. We are in days when we no longer attack the devil but ourselves.

“The reason people from other religion will continue to do better is because they understand their capacity.
“If as a Christian leader, you are corrupt or found wanting, you should be dealt with, but I disagree that someone will propound a law into a spiritual entity. It’s because the church is asleep. Last year, I prophesied that the church will face persecution because the church is asleep,” he said.

Also, Iginla made his stand known on the CAMA law, explaining that the law is a coup against Christianity and that some pastors are ready to die to prevent the law from being implemented on churches.

He maintained that the church was built by the labour of pastors and that appointment of trustees who know nothing about the growth of the church, was highly condemnable

‘’Do you know what it took some of us to labor to grow a church up to this level and someone will say he will appoint a trustee over the Church. You don’t even know how the church came about. If a pastor is corrupt, let him face the law and go to jail but appointing a trustee? Some of us are ready to die before you do that to us, it is absolutely wrong.

“Do you know why it is happening like this? Because the church isn’t feared.

“How do you make a law for the church? You change the trustee and put your own trustees? When has some organization become a spiritual entity?
“Are you about to preach, do deliverance, in what capacity will you control the church? Make laws that prevent men of God from being corrupt and if they are corrupt, take them to court but putting your trustees is a coup against the church,’’ he added.

He advised the government to divert its attention and energy into fight against corruption in the government
“Sometimes I laugh. Thank God for this government and what they are doing, but I must say their energy must be channeled on the right thing.

Those who have looted our money and sent our children to live in penury, those governors that have embezzled money should be sent to jail. It’s only in my country that those who are fighting corruption are even corrupt.

“Money that was spent on Covid-19, how many got it? Those who are in charge should be sent to jail. Leave the church alone. We are not government. If any pastor is found looting with the government, send him to jail but hunting the church is the last place of priority in the fight against corruption.

“The government should intensify efforts against those ones. These are people we should use as scapegoats. I am not saying they should not look into the church, look into it but appointing a trustee in the church is wrong. If anyone is appointed to take my sit in my church, except the Lord hasn’t anointed me, he or she will not live to see the next seven days,’’ he warned.

FAAN Increases Passenger Service Charge By 100% From September 1
User Avatar Forum: Market Place
Posted by: Edoman - 08-28-2020, 04:15 PM - No Replies

Quote:FAAN doubles passenger service charge from Sept 1

Rabiu Yadudu, managing director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), says domestic airlines in the country will pay N2,000 as passenger service charge from September 1.

This is a 100 percent increase from the N1,000 currently paid by airlines.

Under the revised service charge, nternational passengers within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) region will pay $80 while others will pay $100.

Before the review, international passengers paid a flat rate of $50 as service charge.m

Speaking at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday, Yadudu said the current rates are no longer realistic.

“FAAN has not increased Passenger Service Charges (PSC) since 2011 in spite all the huge capital investment at our airport,” NAN quoted him to have said.

“The current PSC charge of N1, 000 is no longer realistic as it does not correlate with realities of cost-related inflation rate which the CBN put at 12.82 percent.

“Besides, FAAN, until late 2019 was collecting the naira equivalent of PSC at an official rate from N305.50 to N344.38 to a dollar.”

Yadudu said ICAO’s recommendation in ‘DOC.9562’ states that revenue generated by airports be transparently re-invested wholly in operating and developing airport facilities.

According to the MD, the federal government will increase its direct deduction from FAAN to 40 percent, a move that he says would make FAAN have over N16 billion shortfall on overhead cost.

He implored stakeholder, airport users and the general public to bear with FAAN as it is laden with so much overhead cost of operation.

He said it would be necessary to roll out new advisories for airlines and air travellers in preparation for the resumption of scheduled international airlines into the country.

Yadudu said the government would communicate same to the general public as soon as new advisories were ready.

Ortom: Any Fulani Who Comes To Benue As Vigilante Will Go To Jail

Quote:Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Thursday warned that he would use the rule of law to ensure that any Fulani herdsman who dared to come to the state for vigilante group was jailed.

Recall that the Fulani organisation, Miyeitti Allah Kauta Hore, had at a press conference in Abuja recently, vowed to establish vigilante group in all states of federation to combat insecurity.

In his response to this, Ortom through his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, warned the Fulani organisation not to come to his state, adding that their motive was to carry their heinous activities to another level.

The association, while also reacting to the statement, threatened to drag the governor and Benue State to court unless he retracted the statement

But Ortom, while speaking with journalists on Thursday, said, “No Fulani group will come to Benue State where I’m the governor; you people know that it is a lie, they cannot come.

“No room for vigilante group in whatever kind. When I confronted them, they said they would not use vigilante group of Nigeria. That one will not operate here.

“We have our own vigilante that operates here; we have community policing in which we are recruiting now and livestock guard that take care of herdsmen in active support with security men.

“So no single vigilante group of Miyeitti Allah will come to Benue State to make any noise here. For us in Benue State, we believe in the rule of law an we will jail them.”

A sick police officer, a 14-year-old girl and two others have been kidnapped by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Mararaba Rido, Chikun local government area of Kaduna States.

They were abducted in the early hours of today, Friday.
The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, chairman Kaduna north local government, Rev. Elisha Abu Dreams, who confirmed this to DAILY POST, said that his house was first attacked by the same suspected kidnappers around 11:57 pm.

According to Rev. Abu Dreams, “The suspected kidnappers first came to my house at exactly 11:57pm and they called, spoke in Fulani and Hausa language that l should open the door for them. Immediately, l and my family started praying for divine intervention from God Almighty.

“While we were praying and refused to open the entrance to the house, they tried using hammer to break the entrance to the house but could not succeed. While they were making efforts to have their way into the house, we were still praying to God for help.

“They later used automatic gun by shooting on the door so that they could gain entrance to the house, yet we were still praying and at the same time, l called on the police to inform them of what we were going through and for their immediate assistance. Before the police personnel could come to the house, they left without gaining entrance to the house.”

Rev. Abu Dreams further explained that the suspected kidnappers left to other neighbouring houses, abducted a sick police officer that had just come from another State, a Civil Defence officer, a 14-year-old girl and a security man and went away with them.

Quote:Woman Married Without Child For Seven Years Dies After Giving Birth To Quadruplet In Lagos, Family Cries Out For Help

We were rejoicing when she gave birth on Tuesday around 8:00am but our celebration was cut short by 9:00pm when we heard she died.

A 35-year-old trader, Adedotun Afusat Feyishara, in the Shogunle area of Oshodi Local Government Area of Lagos State has died after giving birth to quadruplet.

SaharaReporters gathered that the woman died on Tuesday at the Institute of Maternal And Child Health popularly known as Ayinke House located within the premises of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja.

A family member of the deceased told SaharaReporters that she died of complications after delivery.

“Ironically, she died on her wedding anniversary. After waiting for seven years, she gave birth to three girls and one boy. We were rejoicing when she gave birth on Tuesday around 8:00am but our celebration was cut short by 9:00pm when we heard she died. Our joy and jubilation was turned into sadness and cries. It is really a sad incident,” he said.

The family member also called on government, non-governmental organisations and public-spirited individuals to assist them by providing food and drugs for the babies to ensure their survival.

“I’m appealing to the Lagos State Government, companies and Nigerians at large to assist the family to nurse the babies. The kids are still in intensive care, we don’t even know the cost implication for now,” he added.

CAMA: Pastor Suleiman Blows hot- Government can't Change my trustees

CAMA: The government that will change the board of trustees in my church has not yet been born - Apostle Suleiman blows hot (video)

Edo-based clergyman, Apostle Johnson Suleman, has vowed to resist the Company and Allied Matters Acts (CAMA) recently signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The law permits the registrar-general of Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and a supervising minister to strictly supervise religious bodies and charity organizations.

The law also gives the commission power to suspend the trustees of an association or a religious body and appoint an interim manager or managers to coordinate its affairs where it reasonably believes that there has been any misconduct or mismanagement, or where the affairs of the association are being run fraudulently or where it is necessary or desirable for the purpose of public interest.

The Christian Association of Nigeria CAN and Bishop David Oyedepo, have come out to condemn the law.

While preaching in his church recently, Apostle Suleman said the government that will come to change the board of trustee of his church, is yet to be born.

Quote:People have been asking me to talk about the CAMA bill, the bill that says the government can just give the church a board of trustee, they can suspend some, and I said why will I talk over nonsense.
The government that will change the board of trustee in this Ministry, that government has not been born. This Ministry? Come now, come and do it!''

Describing CAMA as an illiterate bill, the clergyman said
Quote:''You said it's CAMA law, it's CAMA bill, what kind of stupid.......have you finished managing the Ministry of Agric? Have you finished managing the Ministry of Works? In this country, the Ministry of Work is not working, then you say it is church...come and try it. There are some things that don't make sense.

Let us not rule out the fact that many pastors just started church because of money. So what you should talk about is transparency. If you say churches should submit their financial report, I will be the first.

I will be so happy because by the time you discover that what they are making a month is 5 million Naira but what the man is spending on people is N60 million, wouldn't you balance me?
It is not even an educated bill. CAMA bill is an illiteriate bill. You do not appoint a board of trustee who has not been around at all and has no stake to the company.

If you wnat financial sincerity, you want financial transparency, then get auditors to audit them. Tell them to open your books. I don't have a problem with that but to say you sit down and carry one Northern Muslim and appoint him to become a board of Trustee, you are mad.''

Apostle Suleiman said fasting and prayers will be used to kill such a person appointed as a trustee
Quote:''You didn't contribute to the land. You didn't contribute to the running of the Ministry, 16 years I have been running the ministry, paying salaries, supporting widows, supporting the poor..then they appoint you a board of trustee. You are mad. We will use fasting and prayers to kill you''.

OFFICE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT
PRESS RELEASE

OSINBAJO TO CHURCH LEADERS:
CONCERNS ABOUT CAMA CAN BE ADDRESSED THROUGH AMMENDMENT BY NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

*VP adds: “We are in a democracy, there is a process by which things can be done”

In an effort to allay fears expressed by the leadership of the Church about the recently enacted Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN has said concerns can be processed through possible amendment of the contentious section of the law through a proposal to the National Assembly.

The Vice President stated this on Thursday during a special conversation at the ongoing Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference.

Responding to a question about reactions to CAMA, the Vice President said “what can be done is that, whatever the proposal for amendment may be, whatever the views of the leadership of the church may be, regarding the question of how the trustees, whether they are interim trustees or not, can be put in the form of a proposal that will be taken to the National Assembly for consideration for amendment to the law, that is the process which is entirely opened and ought to be pursued.”

Continuing, Prof. Osinbajo said “we are in a democracy and there is a process by which things can be done and that process is the one where you bring forward amendments to the National Assembly and they will do whatever is considered useful in the circumstance.”

Further clarifying the CAMA law, the Vice President said “it is a massive legislation that covers a wide range of issues on companies - general meetings, appointment of directors etc. Now, there is a small portion of it called the Incorporated Trustees Section, that small section of it is the section that regulates charities.

“Churches, Mosques and church organizations are regarded as charities. It is the Incorporated Trustees Section of the Companies and Allied Matters Act that has become controversial. And because churches are charities, the provisions in the incorporated trustees section obviously affect the churches.”

Speaking about the fears expressed by the Church, the Vice President said “what the Churches are concerned about is a provision that says that in the event that some wrong-doing is found to be perpetrated by the trustees of the particular organization or Church, the Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) can go to court and get an order to appoint interim administrators or interim trustees for the Church or whichever charity organization and manage the organization.”

“The concern of the Churches is that it could lead to a situation where practically anybody could be appointed as a trustee to oversee the Church and a Church or a Mosque is a spiritual organization and if you do not share the same faith with the Church or Mosque, you may be the wrong person and if a wrong is appointed, you may create more trouble for the organization,” the Vice President added.

When asked by the moderator (Nduka Ogbeibena) if pastors are, by their actions, unwilling to be accountable in the management of their organizations, the Vice President said the issue is rather the fear of abuse of the law than avoiding accountability.

According to Prof. Osinbajo, “As a general position, I do not think it will be right to say that pastors don’t want to be accountable. I believe that several Christian organizations and pastors are willing to be accountable. The problems that they may have is ensuring that processes are not abused in such a way as to compromise the entire organization. And I think that if all that is required is some process of accountability, I think it will be easier for organizations to accept that.”

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

FRIDAY 28TH AUGUST.

HE BEARS YOU UP

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit Himself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered (Romans 8:26).

There’re times you may be confronted with so many predicaments that you wonder, “How am I supposed to pray about all of these problems?” The truth is, if you decide to pray about every problem or issues around you one after the other, you may spend eternity on your knees. Moreover, you may not even remember all of them.

But the good news is, God doesn’t expect you to carry your own burden. The Bible says, “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you” (1 Peter 5:7). In fact, He doesn’t expect you to pray about your problems, because you don’t even know about all of them. So how do you handle them? It’s part of the reasons He gave you the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit bears you up in the time of weakness or limitation.

When you don’t know what to do, what to pray for or how to go about a certain situation, He steps in. God gave us the Holy Spirit to guide us in all situations of life. When it comes to dealing with everyday problems, the same Holy Spirit stands in the gap (intercedes) for us as read in our theme verse. He takes charge in our behalf.

Be ever conscious and yielded to the ministry of the Holy Spirit in your personal life. He prays through you with groanings and deep sighs which can’t be uttered in articulate speech, making intercession for you according to the will of God.

This is why it’s important that you pray often in other tongues; it helps you to activate your spirit and give vent to the divine utterances of the Holy Spirit. When you pray through your spirit, you inevitably address every necessary issue in your life that needs attention.

The psalmist remarked, “The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me…” (Psalm 138:8). As you pray in the Spirit, the Lord would indeed put everything that concerns you into shape, even those things that you’re unaware of. You only need to trust Him with your life, realising that He’s big enough and willing to take care of you. Blessed be His Name forever!

PRAYER

Dear loving Father, thank you for the extraordinary ministry of your Spirit who imparts to me the knowledge of your will concerning issues of importance, and helps me pray aright, causing circumstances to align with your perfect will for me and my loved ones, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

#AFFIRMATIONTRAIN

I affirm that I’m of God, and have overcome the world, because greater is He that’s in me, than he that’s in the world.

I’m a God-man; one in whom Christ literally dwells. I am God-inside minded; thus, I have nothing to fear. I’m born of God!

I am a world over comer. I have overcome the world with its troubles, failures, and darkness; I have overcome every power, every force, and everything that’s against me. It doesn’t matter what’s out there in the world;

I have overcome them all, because Christ lives in me. I dwell in peace and safety; I am of good cheer, because Christ overcame the world for me.

I acknowledge and walk in the reality of my divine life in Christ; who Christ has made me, and all that He has bequeathed to me.

I reign and rule over circumstances. I refuse and reject anything that is inconsistent with the life of Christ in me.

The evidence of the indwelling presence of Christ is seen in the quality of life I live. I am living and enjoying the higher life in Christ, and my life is a testimony to those around me that indeed, there’s a higher life in Christ.

I am the Father are one; the indestructible and unconquerable life of Christ is at work in me.

Everything I am and represent exudes the Christ-life. The greater One lives and expresses Himself in me. Glory to God. Hallelujah!

God bless you
