Buhari Unveils Agenda For Next Three Years
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-26-2020, 08:48 AM - No Replies

Quote:The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday, listed nine areas his regime would prioritise during his remaining years in office.

He listed those priority areas to include improvement of access to quality education, health care, power supply poverty reduction.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the President spoke while receiving letters of credence from ambassadors/high commissioners of eight countries at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The statement was titled “President Buhari lists nine priority areas to improve livelihood of Nigerians.”

Adesina quoted the President as saying that efforts were being made to sustain Nigeria’s position as a profitable investment destination with unequalled incentives in all sectors, especially large market and flexible tax system which investors from various countries can take advantage of.

He said Buhari told the diplomats about Nigeria’s priority, and the need to streamline on people-focused policies.

He quoted the President as saying, “In our efforts to achieve a realistic domestic and foreign policy, as well as national development, we have identified the following nine priority areas to guide our policy directions over the next few years.

“Build a thriving and sustainable economy; enhance social inclusion and reduce poverty; enlarge agricultural output for food security and export; attain energy sufficiency in power and petroleum products and expand transport and other infrastructural development.

“Expand business growth, entrepreneurship and industrialisation; expand access to quality education, affordable healthcare and productivity of Nigerians; build a system to fight corruption, improve governance and create social cohesion; and improve security for all.’’

He said while describing Nigerians as the “nation’s most prized assets,’’ the President said the nine priority mandates were already reflected in the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, a medium-term initiative pioneered by the government to restore economic growth and development while leveraging the resourcefulness and resilience of the citizens.

The President urged the diplomats to use the opportunity of working in the country to improve relations with their governments and people.

“I have no doubt that you might have prior and in-depth knowledge of Nigeria’s huge potential which you will hopefully see for yourselves.

“I, therefore, urge you to go around the country, see things for yourselves, and report to your home governments.

“This is important as you all are representatives of both your sending and host states,” he was further quoted as saying.

Buhari said Nigeria would remain steadfast in pursuing deeper and valuable relations among nations, without discrimination.

He said, “Nigeria strongly supports joint action to ensure a democratic and fair world order based on strict respect for the norms of international law, the United Nations Charter, recognition of the unquestionable value of cultural diversity, national sovereignty, and the right of all countries to decide their future freely, without external pressure.

“Nigeria does not divide its partners into big and small; we value and respect every country, and with every country, we are ready to pursue dialogue, as well as build cooperation on the basis of equality and constructive mutual respect.

“These include our cooperation in strengthening regional, continental and global peace and security, resolving complex issues, settling conflicts, as well as addressing dangerous threats to mankind, among which include terrorism, proliferation of small arms and light weapons, human trafficking, cybercrimes, poverty, communicable diseases, and epidemics.’’

Speaking on behalf of the diplomats, the Ambassador of Algeria to Nigeria, Hocine Latil, was quoted as saying that each of the diplomats brings greetings and agenda from their home governments, but the bottom line remains to enhance cooperation and seek advancement in mutual areas of interest.

“On behalf of my colleagues, we thank you for receiving us. We know that your schedule is tight. As the giant of Africa, you are always focused on resolving conflicts in the continent, while taking care of your domestic issues as well,” he said.

The Algerian ambassador said the African ambassadors will leverage the opportunity to further enhance the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement and learn from one another.

The ambassadors/high commissioners who presented their letters of credence are Hocine Latil of Algeria; Luong Quoc Thinh of Vietnam; Dr Benson Alfred Bana of Tanzania; Traore Kalilou of Cote d’Ivoire; Abakar Saleh Chahaimi of Chad; Jamal Mohammed Barrow of Somalia; Brahim Salem El Mami Buseif of Sahrawi Arab Republic and Mohammed Alibak of Iran.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

WEDNESDAY 26TH AUGUST.

A HAPPY HEART AND A CHEERFUL MIND

A happy heart is good medicine and a cheerful mind works healing, but a broken spirit dries up the bones (Proverbs 17:22 AMPC).

A disease such as cancer draws its life from depression, bitterness, anger, resentment, malice and sadness. But laughter, which is one of the easiest, quickest and instantly recognizable expressions of joy and cheerfulness, has curative powers.

If people who are sick or faced with dire circumstances in their lives would act simply on God’s Word by learning to laugh often, they’ll be amazed at the sudden change.

There’re those who haven’t laughed in a long time. They’ve almost forgotten how to laugh. They look at their lives and conclude there’s nothing to be happy about. In fact, they’d feel guilty if they caught themselves laughing. They believe laughing is for those who aren’t serious about life. Yet, their stiffness hasn’t made life any easier for them.

God wants you to know from His Word that laughter is a healer. Your expression of joy is a good starting point for healing and restoration. Sometimes, when life seems to get tough, learn to pull back and laugh. Have a merry heart and a cheerful mind.

Interestingly, you don’t have to pray to God to give you happiness or cheerfulness; it’s a function of your recreated human spirit. You make yourself joyful with the Word of God. Remember, one of the fruits of your recreated human spirit is joy (Galatians 5:22); you’ve got joy in your spirit; and laughter and cheerfulness are expressions of joy.

CONFESSION
Irrespective of the circumstances, I’m full of joy twenty-four hours a day, for the joy of the Lord is my strength! I’ve been brought into a life of rest, with joy unspeakable and full of glory. The Lord continually fills my mouth with laughter and joy in the Holy Ghost! Glory to His Name forever!

TALKINGSESSION

KINDLY SAY THESE WORDS OUT LOUD.

Dear Father, I thank You for the glorious opportunities in the Gospel to shine and manifest Your glory to everyone, irrespective of their nationality, ethnicity, culture, or ideologies.

Through me, the unsaved hear and receive the light of the glorious Gospel and are transferred from darkness into light.

I am the workmanship of God; I am created in His image, and in His likeness; for beauty and glory!

I am God’s peculiar treasure and pearl of great price, fashioned for good works. I only show forth His wonderful deeds and display His virtues and perfections.

I am completely yielded to the Word! At all times, my heart is open to the influence of the infallible principles of success, victory, health, prosperity, and greatness revealed in God’s Word!

Thus, my way is prosperous, and I am triumphant always! I am alive unto God; everything that concerns me is perfected by the Spirit of the Lord! Daily, as I study and meditate on the Word,

God’s perfect will are unveiled to my spirit; wisdom comes to me, propelling me to act accordingly. My spirit is energized and sensitized to know God’s plan, purpose, and direction for me; and

I walk in the path of divine destiny, fulfilling God’s perfect will for me, in Jesus’ Name. Amen. Hallelujah!

Two Giant Snakes Attack Owner For Attempting To Carry Their 251 Eggs (Video

TWO GIANT SNAKES ATTACK OWNER FOR ATTEMPTING TO CARRY THEIR BABIES AND EGGS FOR MODERN DAY INCUBATION

Two giant snakes (one weighing 250 pounds and 30ft long) were somewhat nice at first but things took a bit of a turn at the end when the owner attempts to carry their eggs and babies.

According to the owner, sometimes things get a little wild working with snakes. They are beautiful and great snakes said their owner. But that doesn’t mean they don’t get a little crazy when it comes to their eggs, after all natural instincts are just that. "Unfortunately I can’t tell them that all I want to do is make sure their eggs will have the best chance of survival using a modern day incubator" said their owner.

"Most of the time people don’t understand why they lay so many eggs in the first place. ‍♂️Usually You’re going to tell the success rate of survival by how many offspring animals have annually‍♂️Elephants have one baby about every 5 years but African driver ants have 3 to 4 million babies per year pythons can lay up to 100 eggs in a year" their owner explained.

Rhapsody Of Realities Daily Devotional*

*ENJOY YOUR LIFE*

Tuesday, August 25th.

Pastor Chris

*Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy (1 Timothy 6:17).*

You can have and enjoy your best life now. You don’t have to wait for the government of your country to set things right and make society conducive before you enjoy your life. Enjoying your life is a choice you have to make for yourself, if you really want to have God’s best today and for all time.

Life is a gift, and a calling from God. Everything in life, including the world around you, was created for your benefit. All you need to enjoy life to the full is to be yourself and stay in God’s Word. Jesus said, “…I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows)” (John 10:10 AMPC). Think about that!

God has richly given you all things to enjoy. 2 Peter 1:3 says, “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue.” Enjoy your life to the full; everything you require to that effect has been given to you.

Paul said in 1 Corinthians 3:21, “…all things are yours.” We also read that God has given you richly (not sparsely) ALL things to ENJOY. What you need is to spend time in the Word, to know what’s yours in Christ Jesus, so you can live by His Word and enjoy your life to the full, for His glory.

*CONFESSION*

I’ve been called into God’s rest. I take charge of my life and enjoy it to its fullest, for Christ has made me a sharer, partner and participator of the divine nature. Therefore, I take advantage of the immense treasures and blessings of the Christ-life. Glory to God!

*FURTHER STUDY:*

1 Timothy 6:17 NIV; Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

Matthew 11:28-30 AMPC Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest. [I will ease and relieve and refresh your souls.](29) Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am gentle (meek) and humble (lowly) in heart, and you will find rest (relief and ease and refreshment and recreation and blessed quiet) for your souls. [Jer. 6:16.](30) For My yoke is wholesome (useful, good–not harsh, hard, sharp, or pressing, but comfortable, gracious, and pleasant), and My burden is light and easy to be borne.

AFFIRMATIONTRAIN

I affirm that the Father has set eternity in my heart. I’m a God-carrying vessel, filled with the maximum load of God!

Therefore, I’m unconquerable and indomitable, because greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world. My days on earth are days of blessings.

I am blessed with divine wisdom and knowledge, blessed with strength, health, divine supply, insight, and ability.

I am so blessed by the Spirit of God and that blessing has brought precision and excellence into my life, enabling me to do the right thing always. I am born with untold blessings, and my spirit is opened continually to the truth.

My eye is single, and every part of my life is full of light. Hallelujah! The supernatural is my life; I will never walk in darkness or confusion.

Today and always, the true light that lightens every man’s world shines in my heart. Now, more than ever, I take advantage of this blessings to do exploits for the Kingdom of God.

I am edified; my spirit is lifted to function from a vantage position of boldness, audacity, and victory in Christ Jesus.

Yinka Odumakin: Boko Haram Can Invite El-Rufai To Their AGM
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-24-2020, 11:22 PM - No Replies

Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

Quote:Yinka Odumakin, National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere has hailed the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for withdrawing the invitation of Governor Nasir El- Rufai of Kaduna state as one of the speakers at its forthcoming 2020 Annual General Meeting.

Odumakin in his latest article titled ‘ El- Rufai and The Wages Of Sin’ said like the NBA, no decent Nigerian should give El-Rufai any platform to speak to Nigerians.

He wrote “The NBA has continued what I advocated that Nigerians to continue to do when the late Kashamu peers wanted to shut former President Olusegun Obasanjo up for grafting the proper epithet for the late serial fraud. Boko Haram can invite El-Rufai for their session but let no decent Nigerians give him their platforms”.

El-Rufai was one of the fresh blood President Obasanjo injected into governance in his time. He showed some zeal in restoring Abuja master plan but his activities were trailed with extreme wickedness”.

“I met him on the net in 2010 when former President Yar’adua fell ill and the cabal around him started monkey business with Nigerians..We started a pressure group of 12 Nigerians which blossomed to 54”.

The online movement later became a real organization at a meeting called by Pastor Tunde Bakare. The Save Nigeria Group engaged the cabal until the National Assembly used the doctrine of necessity to enthrone Dr Goodluck Jonathan as President”.

“I saw how efficient El-Rufai could be while working with him online. There was no airspace he could not enter to get information. The day they were bringing Yar’adua to Nigeria, he was downloading every move of the plane to me.

But it was in that process that I saw how widely ambitious he could be”.

I cannot forget the day Jonathan was made President and he came to Pastor Bakare room at Transcorp. He wanted a list forwarded to the President of about 3 names from which he could pick a vice-President.His name was on the list with highest points”.

“I forgot I have seen him twice in UAE before. The first time was when I attended his 50th birthday. The second was when he solicited a meeting of SNG leadership through me.Pastor Bakare was reluctant at attending but succumbed to pressure from Mr Jimi Agbaje who was the first to become the first adversary of El-Rufai and his partner ,Jimi Lawal.I saw they were not for any great good at the UAE meeting !

“Thereafter came the 2011 elections during which Major General Muhammadu Buhari picked Pastor Bakare as his running’ mate and me as his spokesman.El-Rufai was by the sides of Pastor but throwing bomb at Buhari as “corrupt and unelectable”

“By 2015 he turned around a Buhari supporter and had abandoned his 2011 pipedream of running for President on Labour Party opportunistically using the SNG as a launchpad”.

He became one of the members of the CPC merger committee for CPC towards the APC,I was named a member without anybody discussing with me.i took a trip to Abuja to explain to other members that I was done with the CPC experiment and I was not going to participate in APC”.

“I met El-Rufai and Hadiza Bala-Usman at 3G office and returned to Lagos.

Some weeks after this encounter,I met EL-Rufai at Abuja Airport as we were both traveling to London on British Airways,I saw him and Dr Kayode Fayemi at the lounge and greeted them but EL-Rufai did not answer”.

“As God would always show his sense of humor,we were assigned next seats to each other and we we didn’t exchange a word till we got to London .I was not surprised a year after that he started giving testimony as a Governor about how he started befriending killers and paying them compensations”.

  Nigeria's GDP Shrinks By 6.10% In Q2 2020 - NBS
User Avatar Forum: Market Place
Posted by: Edoman - 08-24-2020, 10:46 PM - No Replies

Quote:Nigeria's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) decreased by -6.10% ear-on-year) in real terms in the second quarter of 2020, ending the 3-year trend of low but positive real growth rates recorded since the 2016/17 recession.

The decline was largely attributable to significantly lower levels of both domestic and international economic activity during the quarter, which resulted from nationwide shutdown efforts aimed at containing the COVID-19 pandemic.

The domestic efforts ranged from initial restrictions of human and vehicular movement implemented in only a few states to a nationwide curfew, bans on domestic and international travel, closure of schools and markets etc., affecting both local and international trade.

The efforts, led by both the Federal and State governments, evolved over the course of the quarter and persisted throughout.

When compared with Q2 2019, which recorded a growth of 2.12%, the Q2 2020 growth rate indicates a drop of -8.22% points, and a fall of -7.97% points when compared to the first quarter of 2020 (1.87%). Consequently, for the first half of 2020, real GDP declined by -2.18% year on year, compared with 2.11% recorded in the first half of 2019. Quarter on quarter, real GDP decreased by -5.04%.  Furthermore, only 13 activities recorded positive real growth compared to 30 in the preceding quarter.

In the quarter under review, aggregate GDP stood at N34,023,197.60 million in nominal terms, or 2.8% lower than the second quarter of 2019 which recorded an aggregate of N35,001,877.95 million. Overall, the nominal growth rate was -16.81% points lower than recorded in the second quarter of 2019, and -14.81% points lower than recorded in the first quarter of 2020. For better clarity, the Nigerian economy has been classified broadly into the oil and non-oil sectors.

The Oil Sector

In the second quarter of 2020, average daily oil production of 1.81 million barrels per day (mbpd) was recorded. This was -0.21mbpd lower than the daily average production of 2.02mbpd recorded in the same quarter of 2019, and  -0.26mbpd lower than the first quarter 2020 production volume of 2.07mbpd by (Figure2).

The real growth of the oil sector was -6.63%  (year-on-year) in Q2 2020 indicating a decrease of -13.80% points relative to the rate recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2019. Growth decreased by -11.69% points when compared to Q1 2020 which recorded 5.06%.  Quarter-on-Quarter, the oil sector recorded a growth rate of -10.82% in Q2 2020. The Oil sector contributed 8.93% to total real GDP in Q2 2020, down from figures recorded in the corresponding period of 2019 and the preceding quarter, where it contributed 8.98% and 9.50% respectively.

The Non-Oil Sector

The non-oil sector declined by -6.05% in real terms during the reference quarter (Q2 2020).  It was the first decline in real non-oil GDP growth rate since Q3 2017. The recorded growth rate was -7.70% points lower compared to the rate recorded during the same quarter of 2019, and -7.60% points compared to the first quarter of 2020.

Nevertheless, non-oil sector output was driven by Financial and Insurance (Financial Institutions),  Information and Communication (Telecommunications),  Agriculture (Crop Production), and Public Administration, moderating the economy-wide decline.

On the other hand, sectors which experienced the highest negative growth included Transport and Storage, Accommodation and Food Services, Construction, Education, Real estate and Trade among others.

In real terms, the Non-Oil sector accounted for 91.07% of aggregate GDP in the second quarter of 2020, slightly higher than the share recorded in the second quarter of 2019 (91.02%)  as well as the first quarter of 2020 (90.50%).

Gunmen who allegedly raided houses in Damba-Kasaya community in Chikun LGA of Kaduna state, have reportedly kidnapped some students of Prince Academy who were receiving lessons for their JSS3 exams.

Bawa Wakili, a resident of the community who spoke to TheCable said the gunmen came “in a large number like they always do” and were shooting sporadically throughout the operation.

He said;

Quote:“They abducted many people in the village, then they went to Prince Academy and abducted many of the students who were receiving lessons for their JSS3 exams.

“I cannot say how many people were kidnapped, but they went away with many people. Soldiers who came to the rescue , turned back after some few kilometres, leaving some of the villagers who accompanied them to rescue the victims.

“The villagers, not knowing that the soldiers had withdrawn, kept pursuing the bandits in the bush, the bandits fired at them and one person was killed.”

APC Apologises To Benin Chamber Of Commerce Over Endorsement Report
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-24-2020, 04:42 PM - No Replies

Quote:The Media Campaign Council of All Progressives Congress, APC, for the Edo Governorship election has apologised to the Benin Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, BENCCIMA, over a report that misrepresented the proceedings of a meeting between the Chamber and its candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

The council, in a retracted report, had erroneously quoted the President of BENCCIMA, Dr. Helen Atekha Odemwingie, to have endorsed its candidate at an event organised by the associations that make up the Organised Private Sector, OPS in Edo State last week.

In an apology released on Sunday, Chairman of the Media Campaign Council, Mr. John Mayaki, clarified that the debunked endorsement claim was reported by an overly enthusiastic communication campaign staff, who has since been queried for the miscommunication.

He apologised to the President, Mrs. Helen Atekha Odemwingie, and the Chamber for any embarrassment caused by the erroneous report.

He said: “On Tuesday, August 18, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu met with associations that make up the Organised Private Sector, OPS, in Edo State, including the Benin Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, BENCCIMA.

“At the meeting, he discussed plans and programmes in his election manifesto, the SIMPLE agenda, to revive the industrial sector of Edo State and boost trade and commerce, especially in communities neglected by the incumbent administration despite their economically viable resource potentials.

“Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu characteristically made a dazzling presentation and earned the commendation of the representatives of the associations based solely on his highlighted plans and his thorough understanding of the issues related to the state’s economy and surrounding data.

“It was this commendation, made without any partisan consideration as it is a well-known fact that the OPS does not adopt candidates or display political bias, that the campaign communication staff assigned to the event misunderstood, and consequently misreported, as an endorsement.

“Based on the goodwill of our party and the intellectual and political strength of our candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, our campaign has been satiated with endorsements, almost on a daily basis, from local and international groups of great repute.

“We, therefore, have no reason to deliberately manufacture one.

“The error, though unfortunate, was unintended. The staff in question has been queried and asked to repeat the training offered at the start of the campaign to all communication staff on ethical and factual reporting, in line with the high standards of our campaign.

“We tender unreserved apologies to Rev. (Dr.) Mrs. Helen Atekha Odemwingie and the Benin Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, BENCCIMA.”

Indian Doctors Remove ‘World’s Largest Ovarian Tumour’ Weighing 50kg From Woman
User Avatar Forum: Other Stories
Posted by: Edoman - 08-24-2020, 04:20 PM - No Replies

Quote:The 52-year-old woman, who asked to remain anonymous, had complained about her weight ballooning, unaware of the giant growth on her ovary.

By the time she was able to undergo a gruelling operation to remove it – which took three and a half hours – the tumour had grown to make up 45% of the woman’s body weight.

Dr Arun Prasad, who led the surgery on the woman at the private Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in Delhi, India, said he was left ‘shell-shocked’ by the tumour.

The doctor said he had never seen a case like it in his 30-year medical career. Speaking after carrying out the operation on Saturday, Dr Prasad said: ‘I have not witnessed anything like this ever before during my profession – in over three decades of experience.

‘We should consider it as a miracle that the woman is recuperating well after being operated on for over 180 minutes.’ The woman, who was admitted to hospital for surgery as Covid-19 cases continue to soar in India, had swelled to a massive 106 kg (almost 17 stone) before her operation.

But almost half of this weight was accounted for by the weight of the huge, benign tumour pressing on her ovary – which could have caused her ovary to explode if left untreated.

The patient had complained of not being able to walk as her feet swelled. She had also begun to suffer from severe anaemia which saw her haemoglobin drop – proving a daunting challenge for the team of surgeons during the operation.

The woman had to undergo a blood transfusion before doctors were able to operate. Dr Prasad said: ‘With a low level of haemoglobin, it was a major task for the doctors. However, we did our best, and eventually succeeded.’

Another doctor involved in the surgery, Abhishek Tiwari, has said he is ‘delighted’ that the patient has quickly begun to recover.

He said: ‘She is lucky that the organs didn’t fail. Otherwise, such pressure could have proved fatal for the patient.’ And Dr Prasad has praised his team of surgeons for doing a ‘wonderful’ job.

He said: ‘I see it as an incredible achievement the way the operation has been done. ‘There was no room for error. The team put in commendable efforts, to say the least.’ The patient is set to be discharged today, just the day after her surgery, in what Dr Prasad branded as a ‘miracle’

Two SSS Operatives, ’21’ IPOB Members Killed In Enugu Violent Clash
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-24-2020, 10:32 AM - Replies (2)

Quote:At least two operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) were killed, on Sunday, allegedly by members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The secessionist group in a statement also said 21 of its members were killed by security operatives and 47 arrested.

The incident caused tension in the area for a greater part of the day as armed police officers and soldiers were deployed.

As a result, the area witnessed vehicular and human traffic as the police combed the area in search of IPOB members.

We were Attacked – SSS
In a statement by its spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, the SSS said its patrol team was “attacked in Emene, Enugu State by members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).”

“The Service lost two personnel in what was clearly an unprovoked violent attack launched by IPOB on the team,” Mr Afunanya said.

The agency condoled with families of the departed officers and also prayed for the repose of their souls.

“However, all measures have been put in place to ensure that their killers and everyone involved in this dastardly act are promptly apprehended and brought to justice. Consequently, a full-scale investigation will be carried out with regard to the incident.

“Once again, the Service reaffirms its commitment to assiduously work with other security agencies to maintain public safety and order. It, therefore, urges law abiding citizens and residents to go about their normal businesses without fear,” the spokesperson said.

IPOB: “We lost 21 members”
In a statement by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB said 21 of its members were killed in the clash.

Mr Powerful said 47 IPOB members were also arrested.

Premium Times could not independently verify the claims on casualty by the IPOB spokesman.

“The Nigerian government and her security agencies have once again exhibited another crude round of killing and massacre against the peaceful and unarmed IPOB family members in Enugu State today 23rd of August, 2020″

“We are surprised how Nigerian security agencies in their respective formations like army, police and DSS will be slaughtering our people without any provocation.

“This rampant killing of innocent members of IPOB will be reciprocated in due cause. IPOB members have been slaughtered and arrested in their numbers across different locations in Enugu State today Sunday 23rd August 2020”

Dangote adbanner 728x90_2 (1)
“We MUST warn and put the whole world on notice that Nigerian Government and her security operatives should stop killing our people because we are peaceful organisation with the mandate of restoring Biafra sovereignty within shortest period,”

Mr Powerful narrated his group’s version of how the violence started.

He said the IPOB members were holding a peaceful meeting when armed SSS operatives stormed the area shooting sporadically.

“Today, the Nigerian security personnel stormed IPOB meeting ground in Enugu and started shooting sporadically which consumed lives of 21 members and 47 arrested for just no cause or provocation,” Mr Powerful said.

He alleged that the security operatives took the bodies of the slain IPOB members away.

“The security in the whole world must understand that keeping quiet and following the rule of law should not be construed as weakness on the part of IPOB.”

He said the group is a peaceful organisation and will remain peaceful despite the provocations.

“IPOB is a well rooted movement committed fully on the pursuit for Biafra freedom and independence from Nigeria. We are not a violent group and there is nothing they can do to change our resolve to maintain peace and order in our land.

“The efforts of the Nigeria government and her partners in crime in trying to push IPOB to change their tactics will amount to vanity”.

“We are warning and asking Nigeria government and her security operatives to stop this atrocity immediately. Why have they refused to confront Fulani terrorists herdsmen, Boko Haram terrorists, Ansaru group, Fulani bandits, ISIS and other groups ravaging the country and busy killing innocent and unarmed citizens of IPOB?”

Mr Poweful said “those responsible for this barbaric killing in Enugu today must pay for their actions against IPOB at the appropriate time.”

“It is laughable for DSS to be claiming that they lost five personnel in the hands of unarmed and Peaceful people. It is clear to all that IPOB doesn’t indulge or carry arm or involve with any object. IPOB is a peaceful movement and we must remain so till Biafra is totally achieved”, he added.

IPOB seeks a sovereign Biafran country made up of Igbo-speaking parts of Nigeria. Its activities have been outlawed by the Nigerian government although it repeatedly says its movement is a peaceful one.

IPOB’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu, fled Nigeria after he was granted bail following his trial for treason.

We Borrowed 5,000metric Tonnes Of Grains From ECOWAS – Mustapha Baba-Shehuri
User Avatar Forum: Market Place
Posted by: Edoman - 08-24-2020, 10:29 AM - No Replies

Quote:The Federal Government on Sunday said a total of 5,000 metric tonnes of assorted grains were borrowed by Nigeria from the food stock of the Economic Community of West Africa States.

The Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mustapha Baba-Shehuri, disclosed this while receiving the 3,999 tonnes of cereals donated to the Federal Government by ECOWAS with its donors and financial partners.

The minister received the 3,999 tonnes of cereals on behalf of the Federal Government at the Hotoro Grain Depot, in Kano State, according to a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Baba-Shehuri explained that to address the incessant worrying food crisis in the West African sub-region, especially in the Sahel, the heads of government of ECOWAS member states decided to establish a Regional Food Security Reserve Programme.

He said this necessitated the signing of contract agreement between ECOWAS and the ministry’s Department of Food and Strategic Reserve on July 7, 2017.

The minister said, “The government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria loaned 5,000MT of assorted grains from ECOWAS stock which was agreed to be paid back on grain for grain basis

“Modalities had been put in place to replace the ECOWAS stock before the advent of COVID-19 pandemic. That notwithstanding, I can assure you that the stock will be replaced in due course.”

On the donation by ECOWAS, the minister said it would be used to support the most vulnerable populations to help mitigate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria.

El-Rufai is a nationalist and has never associated himself with religious bigotry - Sanusi speaks on withdrawal of NBA's invitation to the Kaduna state Governor

Former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has reacted to withdrawal of the Nigeria Bar Association's  invitation to Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna following a petition against him by some lawyers.

Speaking during a meeting with the Kaduna state Governor on Sunday August 23, Sanusi stated that El-Rufai is a nationalist and has never associated himself with religious bigotry.

He insisted that the dis-invitation of the Kaduna state Governor does not portray members of the association as people who want progress for Nigeria. Sanusi added that the NBA lost an opportunity to interrogate El-Rufai at the conference.

He said;

Quote:”I am aware that the vast majority of NBA members do not agree with those things. You know if you have an opinion, people will either agree with you or disagree with you. But a man ‎who has an opinion that can be agreed with or disagreed with is always better than a man who has no opinion at all.

“Nasir always has opinions, he knows what his position is on things. He says that position very clearly, people will like it, some people will not like it and that is what some people call controversial and being controversial is actually having an opinion.

“If you don’t want ‎to be controversial, you just be flexible, just flow with the wind and nobody knows where you stand. Then you will not have any friends or enemies, as the case may be.”

Mr Sanusi said he spoke to the chairman of the NBA technical committee who confirmed that he was the one that invited Mr El-Rufai.

“He (Mr El-Rufai) didn’t ask to come and speak and the technical committee didn’t support the call to dis-invite him.‎
“You know, If you are going to take action on people based on allegations, the president of the NBA himself has allegations against him that have not been proven. Nobody said anything about him because this is a matter that is before the court of law and people will wait for the court to decide.

“Everybody has a right to fair hearing and most important for me, if you feel that the governor of Kaduna State is not doing right, you should invite him to your conference and ask him to explain what he is doing.

Tell him what you think he is doing wrong and you will learn something from him and he will learn something from you.

“I have seen the responses from different branches of NBA and I hope this matter will not be turned to ethnicity and religious matter, it should be a matter of principle.

“Anybody who knows him, knows he has never ever associated with any ethnic or religious bigotry. All our friends and people never know us as northerners because we are just Nigerians."

Responding to Sanusi's comment, El-Rufai noted that the former emir was in the state not only to visit him but also as the vice-chairman of the state’s investment promotion agency. According to him, Sanusi will be spending a week in the state during which he would be briefed on the activities of the agency and interact with others in the state.

El-Rufai said;

Quote:“As you know, His Highness is the vice-chairman of Kaduna Investment Promotion Agency chaired by the deputy governor.
“We hope by this visit he will be briefed on the activities of the investment agency and also interact with all the agencies that are working to attract investment in Kaduna.
“Kaduna State is lucky to have him as the vice-chairman of the state investment promotion agency because of his wide global network."

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

MONDAY 24TH AUGUST.

CHRIST-INSPIRED RESPONSE

But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil (Luke 6:35).

Have you ever been ill-treated? I believe many of us, at one time or the other have suffered some sort of ill-treatment or injustice. But how God expects us to respond in such a situation is clear in His Word. He said in James 5:13 AMPC, “Is anyone among you afflicted (ill-treated, suffering evil)? He should pray….” How remarkable!

It parallels what Jesus also said in Luke 6:28; He said, “…pray for them that despitefully use you.” God is aware of such situations in our lives where we face persecutions or put up with mistreatments from other people. However, He doesn’t ask us to pity ourselves, complain, or get bitter at those who mistreat us; rather, He tells us to pray!

It’s very tempting to react in the exact opposite when maltreated. Some may even try to retaliate or get back at those mistreating them, and in the process, behave in a way different from who they truly are. Never allow someone else’s bad behaviour change your good conduct, or character.
Perhaps you were nice and loving to someone who in return treated you unfairly. Don’t decide never to show love to anyone else because of the betrayal; that won’t be Christ-like. If you succumb to that, you’ll be allowing someone else’s flawed attitude or poor judgement control your character.

The question you should ask yourself is this: “Was it right for me to have helped and shown love?” If it was right, then keep doing what’s right. That way, you protect your spirit from unhealthy infiltrations and deny the devil the opportunity of a traction in your life.

No matter how you’re treated, maintain the Christ attitude. He said, “Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also. Give to every man that asketh of thee…love ye your enemies, and do good…and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil” (Luke 6:28-35).

PRAYER

Dear Father, thank you for the ability to do right and display your goodness and love to all. I walk in righteousness and dispense your blessings to my world. Through me, many come to know your truth and embrace your righteousness, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

US: Why We Are Helping Nigeria Rehabilitate Repentant Terrorists
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion

Quote:The United States Government says it is assisting Nigeria in rehabilitating repentant terrorists as part of a broader joint Nigeria and US strategy to counter violent extremism.

The US Embassy to Nigeria said this in response to an email by Saturday PUNCH on Friday. It said it was assisting Nigeria through the International Organisation for Migration.

The email read in part, “The US government assists the Government of Nigeria’s Disarmament, Demobilisation, Rehabilitation and Reintegration programme through the International Organisation for Migration – which supports Nigeria’s Operation Safe Corridor programme to carry out DDRR of repentant and eligible ex-combatants who were formerly affiliated with a terrorist organisation.”

It said the 601 repentant terrorists who recently graduated from Operation Safe Corridor in Gombe State had not yet been re-integrated into society. The US said the repentant terrorists would be reintegrated in batches in the near future.

The email further read, “According to our understanding, 601 individuals who were formerly affiliated with a terrorist organisation recently graduated from Operation Safe Corridor last month following successful completion of the de-radicalisation and rehabilitation programme in Gombe Camp.

“We understand that these men have not been released to communities yet and are still awaiting transfer to a rehabilitation centre in Maiduguri. They are to be transferred in batches in the very near future.

“The United States has supported Nigeria’s efforts toward effective disarmament, demobilisation, and reintegration of former affiliates as an important element of the broader joint Nigerian and US strategy to counter violent extremism.”

A large section of Nigerians had condemned the plan of the Federal Govt to reintegrate repentant terrorists into society while millions of victims of terrorism remain displaced. The Borno State Commissioner for Informat-ion, Babakura Jatau, had told Sunday PUNCH in July that only about 10 per cent of the repentant terrorists were actually fighters while the rest were either children or accomplices.

Meanwhile, rights group, Amnesty International, says the US Government has continued to sell weapons to Nigeria despite the rights abuses being perpetrated by the Nigerian military. The Deputy Director for Advocacy and Government Relations for Amnesty International USA, Adotei Akwei, said this in an email interview with The PUNCH.

In January 2019, Akwei had written a letter to the foreign relations committees in the US Congress calling for the implementation of the Leahy Law in Nigeria due to the high number of human rights abuses by the Nigerian military.

The Leahy Law is an American human rights law that prohibits the US Department of State and Department of Defence from providing military assistance to foreign security force units that violate human rights with impunity.

However, Akwei told The PUNCH that one year after Amnesty wrote the letter, that the US authorities had continued to sell weapons to Nigeria in contravention of the Leahy Law.He said the government of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), had failed to address human rights violations.

Responding to a question, he said, “The short answer is no, we have not seen the Buhari government implement any form of credible accountability for human rights violations committed by the Nigerian security forces since we sent our letter and we have not seen the USG (US Government) take the necessary action of enforcing the Leahy Law in response to the continued impunity being enjoyed by the Nigerian security forces.”

Akwei had in a letter signed on behalf of Amnesty said the Nigerian military was fond of attacking unarmed civilians.

Farmer's hand chopped off by suspected herdsmen in Oyo (photo)

Suspected herdsmen have chopped off the hand of a farmer in Ikoyi-Ile in Orire local government area of Oyo State.

The Secretary of Idera Agbe Farmers Association in the council, Chief Joseph Oyekola, who confirmed this to The Nation, said the herdsmen terrorizing the area have also raped two women.

Recounting their ordeal in the hands of the suspected herdsmen, Oyekola, who doubles as the Babalaje Agbe in the local government, said:

Quote:“We don’t know what to do because if we take any step or revenge, it might lead to bloodshed. Herdsmen cut off the hand of one of our workers working on the farm, they destroyed our farm products. Another farmer was matcheted on the head while others were injured, and two of our minors were also raped.”

Another victim, Usman Daudu, whose farm products were also allegedly destroyed by the herders, said 20 hectares of his farmland planted with maize, yam and tomatoes,  were destroyed by the herdsmen.
Quote:“They have not stopped the attack on our farm, we have pleaded with them several times yet they didn’t yield to our plea. They are ‘Bororo’ Fulani because the Fulani that have been living with us never had any issue with us.” Daudu said

The monarch of the area and the Onikoyi of Ikoyi-Ile, Oba Abdul-Yekeen Oladipupo, said he has been trying his best to facilitate peaceful coexistence between the farmers and herders in the area. He said farmers/herders clashes are not limited to the area.

Quote:“We have tried to resolve the issue many times because it is difficult to separate farmers and herders. We have been living together for a while.

I have taken a lot of steps in the matter so as to find a lasting solution to it but it seems my efforts are not sufficient to achieve the goal. So, we need government intervention in the matter.
I’ve had series of meetings with all the Baales (family heads) around me to find solution to the issue. In fact, I even had meetings with the Assistant Inspector General of Police (Zone 11) in Osogbo together with the Commissioner of Police, and the police assured of coming to our aid.”Oladipupo said

The monarch called on Oyo state governor, Seyi Makinde, House of Assembly and security agencies to come to the aid of his people before the issue degenerates, stating he does not want bloodshed again in the town.

The Idiocy Of Attacking Oyedepo On CAMA, By Emmanuel Onwubiko

Emmanuel Onwubiko: The idiocy of attacking Oyedepo on CAMA

Recently, one of the most powerful voices against dictorship and human rights violations in Nigeria and the founding Bishop of the fastest growing religious organisation:- the Living Faith Church, Reverend David Oyedepo has been made the object of political campaign calumny and vicious attacks by the Current president of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari.

The unreasonable reason for these deluge of attacks including media attacks by some completely ignorant and rebellious characters, is because of the stand of the Christian leader concerning certain provisions of the companies and Allied matters Act of 2020 in which the financial controls of religious and non-governmental organisation were interfered with and certain powers vested in the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

Reverend Oyedepo had advised the Federal Government to expunge the part of the newly signed amended CAMA that gives the supervising minister the power to remove the board of trustees of churches without recourse to the court.

The Bishop had affirmed as follows: “in the document, they said the registrar can remove the trustees with no recourse to the court. They shouldn’t try it. This must be from somebody who woke up from the wrong side of the bed after dreaming. The person must have drafted the aspect in the bill as their custom is. I am 51 years old in this thing (Christianity) , don’t try it. I have been with Jesus some time and i am sent as a prophet to the nations. There minister can remove the trustees and close the account of a church is….. Infact they say they would appoint managers. So, they can appoint occultists to be managers of church affairs when we are alive. Don’t try it when this crude prophet is alive, when all the sons of the prophets are alive. Don’t try it, this is a timely advice”.

But rather than engage in introspection and listen to divergent opinions on these contentious provisions in the amended version of CAMA, the president started pouring invective and unmitigated insults on Reverend David Oyedepo in what has become a familiar character of the media team of President Muhammadu Buhari to always resort to argumentum ad hominem whenever Nigerians are not happy with certain policies of the administration.

One of the most unruly and ethically notorious members of the President Buhari’s media team, even asked Oyedepo to set up his own Country if he can’t accept changes to the business law.

An aide to President Muhammadu Buhari on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie, reportedly berated the presiding bishop of Living Faith Church Worldwide, David Oyedepo, for kicking against the Company and Allied Matters Acts in churches.

Oyedepo, while speaking in his church on Sunday, described as illegal the power given to a minister to remove a trustee and close the accounts of the church without legal backing.

He said, “Who was Paul persecuting? The church! Who said, “I’m the one you are persecuting?” Jesus! This country is going too far and it’s a risk. I saw something on CAMA (Company Allied Matters Act) and they put religious bodies there that Registrar-General can remove trustees without recourse to the court. Don’t try it!”

Reacting to the issue, the media said Onochie said, “I hope this is not true. If it is, Oyedepo will have to manufacture his own country and live by his own laws.
“As long as he lives and operates within the entity called Nigeria, he will live by Nigerian rules and laws. He will do as he’s told by the law. Enough of lawlessness.”

Recall that controversially, the new amendments to CAMA provides that religious bodies and non-governmental organisations will be strictly regulated by the Registrar-General of Corporate Affairs Commission and a supervising minister.

The law also wields power to suspend the trustees of an association or a religious body and appoint an interim manager or managers to coordinate its affairs where it reasonably believes that there had been any misconduct or mismanagement, or where the affairs of the association are being run fraudulently or where it is necessary or desirable for the purpose of public interest.

I must state without mincing words that this garrulous media aide who deployed gutter language to respond to the well thought out criticisms of the amendment to CAMA 2020, must be living in fool’s paradise not to have realised that Nigeria is a constitutional democracy and therefore, President Buhari is neither an unopposed constitutional monarch nor is he a fascist leader in the mode of Benito Musolini of the pre-Workd war Italy.

What this means is that, Nigerians have the fundamental Human Rights to exercise their freedom of expression and in this instance, the opinion of Rev. Oyedepo is constructive and positive whereas the response from the presidency is irrational, idiotic, and thoughtless.

I will ask the media team of President Buhari to pick up copies of the Nigerian constitution to go through chapter four to realize that the president is totally obliged to listen to educated and rational opinion of Nigerians and to be responsive and not antagonistic.

Can they please in their sober moments read sections 39(1), 40, 38(1) as follows: says: “38(1). Every person shall be entitled to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, including freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom (either alone or in community with others, and in public or private) to manifest and propagate his religion or belief in worship, teaching, practice and observance.”

Then section 39(1) provides that: “Every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression, including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impact ideas and information without interference.” The next section which is 40 added that: “Every person shall be entitled to assemble freely and associate with other persons, and in particular he may form or belong to any political party, trade union or any other association for the protection of his interests”.

Moreover, Nigeria being a constitutional democracy, cannot be making a law that makes the executive arm of government far and above the other arms or segments of government when the grund norm has clearly envisaged a clear delineation or Separation of powers in section 4,5 and 6 as follows: “4(1). The legislative powers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria shall be vested in a National Assembly for the Federation which shall consist of a Senate and a House of Representatives.
(2). the National Assembly shall have power to make laws for the peace, order and good government of the Federation or any part thereof with respect to any matter included in the Exclusive Legislative list set out in part 1 of the Second Schedule to this Constitution.
The House of Assembly of the state shall have power to make laws for the peace, order and good government of the State or any part thereof with respect to the following matters, that is to say-
a. any matter not included in the Exclusive Legislative List set out in Part 1 of the Second Schedule to this Constitution;
b. any matter included in the Concurrent LEGISLATIVE List set out in the first column of Part ll of the Second Schedule to this Constitution to the extent prescribed in the second column opposite thereto; and
c. any other matter with respect to which it is empowered to make laws in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution.

Specifically, the powers of the executive arm of government is provided for in section 5. (1) thus: “Subject to the provisions of this Constitution, the executive powers of the Federation
a. shall be vested in the President and may, subject as aforesaid and to the provision of any law made by the National Assembly, be exercised by him either directly or through the Vice-president and Ministers of the Government of the Federation or officers in the public service of the Federation; and
b. shall extend to the execution and maintenance of this Constitution, all laws made by the National Assembly has, for the time being, power to make laws.”

Then section 6. (1) says,: “the judicial powers of the Federation shall be vested in the courts to which this section relates, being courts established for the Federation.
2. The judicial powers of a State shall be vested in the courts to which this section relates being courts established, subject as provided by this Constitution, for a State.
3. The courts to which this section relates, established by this Constitution for the Federation and for the State, specified in subsection (5)(a) to (i0 of the section shall be only superior courts of record in Nigeria; and save as otherwise prescribed by the National Assembly or by the House of Assembly of a State, each court shall have all the powers of a superior court of record.

Before I proceed, can I say that it is irregular for president Buhari to try to control the finances of churches when there is a clear separation between church and state? Also, it is unnatural for the government to enjoy the arbitrary powers to suo moto nominate trustees for organisations that are NON-GOVERNMENTAL because this is a direct affront to the operational independence of non-governmental groups and a way to kill the vibrancy of the civil society community.

What has happened is that President Buhari through his lackeys in the National Assembly has succeeded in crippling opposition voices even when the essence of the law as a whole is to encourage ease of doing business.

By the way, how does religious worship fall into a commercial venture? Perhaps, the media officials recruited by president Buhari thinks that their boss is a tyrant and therefore not subject to the tenets of the Constitution which even in section 10 prohibits government from making religions as state apparatuses.

NEWS: CAMA bill dead on arrival, you can't fight Church - Pastor Giwa dares Buhari
Make no mistake about it; the law itself is a wonderful piece of legislations but the insertions of these aforementioned toxic and obnoxious provisions to cripple religious worships and the independence of non-governmental organizations was done in bad faith and must be expunged just as Reverend Oyedepo demanded.

To begin with, the Companies and Allied Matters Act, 2020 (“the Act”), repeals and replaces the extant Companies and Allied Matters Act of 1990. The new CAMA, now seen as Nigeria’s most significant but nevertheless highly contentious and controversial business legislation in three decades, introduces new provisions that promote the ease of doing business whilst reducing regulatory hurdles and also bringing the provisions in tangent with the technological realities of the 21st century.

Promoters of this law in the media wants us to believe that this is expected to ultimately promote investments, create more jobs, and promote a friendly business climate in Nigeria. But they are dead wrong. How can government try to control how businesses are organised as if the executive arm of government now enjoys the judicial powers of the Federation. Why then do we have Section 6 of the Nigerian constitution?

Some of the provisions of the amended bill and how it will affect businesses are explained below by some media writers tgus: S.18 (2) of the new CAMA now makes it possible to establish a private company with only one (1) member or shareholder. This is good news for growing startups and young entrepreneurs because it has totally resolved business registration bottlenecks. A lot of businesses have been forced into unnecessary partnerships because prior to the new CAMA, to legally own a business in Nigeria, you needed to provide at least two or more people as co-owners of the business.

Section 40 (1): There is the introduction of Statement of Compliance (SOC) signed by an Applicant (or agent), without the need for a Lawyer or Notary Public to attest to Declaration of Compliance (DOC). SOC is a requirement of the law that indicates that the applicant has complied with the registration and requirements.

Section 27: This section replaces ‘Authorized Share Capital’ with ‘Minimum Share Capital’. This implies that the promoter(s) of a business is not required to pay for or allocate shares that are not needed at the specific time of incorporation.

The procurement of a Common Seal is no longer a mandatory requirement according to S.98 of the new CAMA. With the amended bill, companies can now authenticate documents by other means other than a common seal. This means you don’t need to stamp seals on documents anymore. The world is digital so who needs those seals.

The new CAMA makes provision for electronic filing, electronic share transfer and e-meetings for private companies. You can now register your business from anywhere in the country via the e-registration portal. The new CAMA also provides for remote or virtual general meetings, provided that such meetings are conducted in accordance with the Articles of Association of the company. This will facilitate participation at such meetings from any location within and outside the shores of the country, at minimal costs.
Small companies or any company having a single shareholder are no longer mandated to appoint auditors at the annual general meeting to audit the financial records of the company. S. 402 of the new CAMA provides for the exemption in relation to the audit of accounts in respect of a financial year.

Relatedly, these media canvassers of these reform measures stressed that the appointment of a Company Secretary is now optional for private companies.

According to S. 330 (1) of the new CAMA, the appointment of a company secretary is only mandatory for public companies.

Besides, the new Act, introduces Limited Liability Partnerships and Limited Partnerships, which combines flexibility and tax status of a partnership with the status of limited liability for members of a company. This they envisaged implies that Startups are not stuck with the option of setting up a Company, but also enjoy the benefits of partnership which a partnership agreement (including vesting agreement, and founders agreements) beyond the regular Articles and Memorandum of Association, whilst still protecting their personal assets from being sold in claims for debts, liability, or creditors.

The media reports too that Under Section 223 (12) of the new Act, filing fees for Registration of Charges payable to the CAC (Corporate Affairs Commission) has been reduced to 0.35% of the value of the charge. This they reasoned is expected to lead to up to 65% reduction in the associated cost payable under the regime
the new Act extends merger beyond LLCs to Incorporated Trustees.

Section 849 implies that two or more NGOs, social entrepreneurs with different registered organizations, with similar goals can merge to form one (1) single organization.
Section 119 emphasizes transparency in terms of control in a company. It requires that persons with significant control in a company disclose its shareholding to other shareholders. For example, anyone who has person(s) holding shares on their behalf as trustees or proxies, whilst being shareholders themselves in same company, are expected to disclose such relationship for transparency.

S.307 (1) of the Act prohibits a person from being a director in more than five (5) public companies at a time.

The media promoters of the amended version also claimed that the new Act introduces a framework for rescuing a company in distress and to keep it alive as against allowing such entity to become insolvent. Provisions were made with respect to Company Voluntary Arrangements (S.434 to S.442), Administration (S.443 to S.549) and Netting (S.718 to S.721).

The National Assembly and the Executive arm of government shot themselves on their legs by shutting out the real stakeholders in the process of amendments apparently to allow them introduce from the backdoors those tyrannical rules that will take the control of Non governmental bodies from their formators to the Government so they appoint their cronies to run these organisations if the government feels intimidated by the independent opinions of these Non governmental individuals. This is a plot to destabilize pluralism in the society. These amendments have failed the simple test of sound policy making process.

“Public policy is best described as the broad area of government laws, regulations, court decisions, and local ordinances.Today, government affects all aspects of our lives. Everyone has a stake in the public policies enacted by federal, state, and local governments.
Many citizens and groups try to influence public policy through the political process by supporting candidates and political parties. That’s a good way to make a positive impact, but not the best way.
Politicians and political parties come and go. Their positions on issues can change due to circumstances. They can be voted out of power as easily as they are voted in.
The best way to make a lasting impact on public policy is to change public opinion. When you change the beliefs of the people, politicians and political parties change with them”, (https://www.mackinac.org/).

The opposition of President Muhammadu Buhari to the strong voices that rejec these draconiam amendments is in breach of the well known rules of constitutional democracy.

As one top rating scholar wrote thus: “Rule of law and democracy are both desirable attributes of a political system. Scholars writing of democratic transitions from authoritarian rule usually argue that the goal of such a transition is the establishment of democracy with the rule of law, implying that both may be achieved simultaneously.”

The researcher stated that perhaps that is so. “What is often meant by rule of law is no more than the notion that government should work its will through general legislation, legislation to which the governors themselves are subject, rather than through irregular decrees and ad hominem proclamations.”

“But rule of law may require more than this: it may require that people are able to foresee accurately the legal consequences of their actions and not be subject to sudden surprises whether or not these take the form of legistation, or perhaps that the law contain, or at least not violate, certain substantive principles and rights.”

“Democratic rule minimally requires government by the people or their representatives, elected on a broad franchise. But, in some conceptions, it too many require more than that. Perhaps, democracy demands that the range of choice open to government be broad and not constricted by externally imposed restraints (such as legal protections for minorities). We expect, for example, or hope, that our government can correct inequities arising from markets or social interactions. Such interventions can involve confiscatory taxes or draconian regulations, either of which can threaten claims for minority rights. Or perhaps, democracy requires that the people be regularly and genuinely consulted on fundamental legal changes so that institutions or practices of deliberation and consultation are in place and functioning(https://www.researchgate.net).

These amendments that relates to the plot by President Muhammadu Buhari to control how NGOs and Churches are administered are satanic and must be expunged by the National Assembly or annulled by the Court of law immediately.

N1.08bn Corruption Scandal Hits Debt Management Office
User Avatar Forum: Market Place

Office operating on temporary files, fake documents

…Staff claim estacodes of oversea, local trips not embarked on

Quote:By Levinus Nwabughiogu

The Debt Management Office, DMO is currently enmeshed in corruption scandal, Saturday Vanguard can report. Money amounting to N1.08 billion is alleged to be lost from 2017 till date, thereby raising corruption cases the country is battling.

It was learnt that the large-scale financial wrongdoings in the office would likely draw the attention of anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The corruption is allegedly being perpetrated through various means ranging from awards of contracts, operating on temporary files, unauthorized overseas trips, organization of fictitious events, production of fake transport receipts and destruction of official documents.

Chronicle of frauds

In December, 2017, the office requested the then Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun to approve the sum of N90 million to cover travel expenses to states for eight DMO Staff to carry out reconciliation of the Paris Club Refunds. Adeosun approved N60 million for the exercise.

The money was released to the DMO via AIE No. CMD/SW/REC/008/2018 dated 12th January, 2018 but the members of staff nicknamed ‘the Task Force’, we gathered, never travelled to any states.

They rather worked in-house to conclude the assignment, using the records already in the possession of the DMO.

It was gathered that the money was subsequently withdrawn in tranches, brought to the office and distributed to the staff contrary to extant regulations

The first tranche of the money, it was learnt, was N4.8 million, the 2nd, 3rd & 4th tranches were released in the sum of N20 million each and N15.2 million respectively totaling N60 million.

It was gathered that the eight staff of DMO who did the work were only given about N2,500,000 each on the average, making a total of about N20 million with the balance of N40 million allegedly diverted.

Incidentally, the money which was an advance payment from the Ministry of Finance to DMO has not been retired till date.

In November, 2019, the office also approved money to be paid for events which included sensitization workshops on “various products recently introduced” by DMO in four commercial cities of Ibadan, Kaduna, Port Harcourt and Owerri. The events and trips, for which a total of N130 million was expended, it was gathered, never existed or took place.

N401.3million paid on contract splitting, media consultancy, using temporary file (T1- T1 million)

Between 2018 and June, 2020, the office had approved the payment of about N401,348,818.00 for an unknown media consultancy firm believed to be fake without due process.

Contracts were said to have been split and awarded to the vendor on monthly basis for each project, exceeding the monetary thresholds of the office, depending on the nature of the project.

By the act establishing the office, the DMO’s approval power, it was learnt, is not expected to cross the threshold of N2.5m million. Figures outside this amount pass through the DMO’s tenders board to be discussed by other accounting officers who will determine the viability and the propriety or otherwise of the project.

Where it exceeds the approval powers of the boards, it is then taken to the ministerial tenders board for approval and or the Federal Executive Council, FEC as the case may be.

This, however was done without an active file to establish the history of the transactions but in a Temporary File (T-File) ranging from T1 to T1million.

It was gathered that payments were however made.

Interestingly, in a transaction of N10 million for instance, the invoice would be broken into smaller amounts and paid to the same vendor on the same date and on the same project in a bid to make them fall within the office threshold.

Reckless approval of projects totaling N350 million above threshold

There is also an approval for projects whose amounts were beyond the power of the office. These projects which the aggregate is estimated to the tune of over N350 million were supposed to pass through the DMO’s tenders board or Ministerial tenders board. But that was not the case as due process was not adhered to, an offence which contravenes Section 17 (ai-ii) of the Public Procurement Act, 2007 and Section 2906 and 2916 of the Financial Regulations and other relevant sections of the Act and extant laws.

False claims of funds with fake receipts for events totaling about N29.9 million

The office also operates on fake receipts and invoices in the guise of weekend work refreshment and other activities. It was alleged that so far, claims of funds amounting to N29,929,900 had been made.

Approval and receipt of estacode for N56m unauthorized foreign trips

Similarly, the office enriches itself with payments of estacode and air tickets for foreign trips totaling about N56 million without the approval of relevant authorities as required by extant circular HSCF/CSO/HRM/POL. 1402/1 of 2015 and 2016.

Collection of N3 million duty tour allowance for trips never embarked upon

The office also has the penchant of collecting money for trips not embarked upon and such refunds were not being paid back to the treasury.

Payment of N50 million Business class flights for trips

Contrary to the circular No. SGF/OP/1/S.3/1753 of November 2016 of the Federal Government, members of the top management team used business class tickets for foreign trips for which about N50million may have been expended even on trips not approved by the ministry of finance.

Suppression, falsification and destruction of official records

On September 12, 2019, there was a request by a top official for the approval of the Minister of Finance, Budget & National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed to embark on a trip to the United States for the 2019 Annual Meeting of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC scheduled to hold from October 14 – 20, 2019 at Washington DC.

A Travel File with No. DMO/DG/042/725 was sent to the Finance & Account Unit of DMO for payment with no approval of the minister for payment.

The payment was however not processed owing to the intervention and query of the Internal Audit & Control Unit which stopped the payment.

The file with the query of the Internal Audit Unit was later to disappear. However it later resurfaced for payment of the same trip, same amount, same date and venue with a new File No. DMO/DG/005/T2 where an approval for travel was purported to have been directed by the Ministry of Finance, Budget & National Planning.

Inflation of FG’s floatation cost budget

This paper learnt that there had been requests for funds not needed into the Federal Government of Nigeria, FGN Bond floatation Cost Account, thereby increasing the cost of issuance of Bonds and by extension increasing the total debt burden and debt stock in a bid to siphon the funds.

But this has always met the resistance of some department of the Office.

For instance, in 2018, the office closed Account with a balance of about N2.68 billion and in 2019, without minding the huge balance, it also requested for extra funds without refunding the balance of that of 2018 leading to a huge balance of about N4.3billion at the close of 2019 Account.

Following the excess money in the account, the Office went on expenditure spree.

For example, a certain communication outfit was paid the sum of N22 million through a Department called Market Development Department but was stopped by Internal Audit & Control.

The infractions, as gathered had set the management on a collusion course and affected the efficiency of the Debt Management Office which may be inimical to the overall agenda of the President Buhari led government.

CAMA: Bishop blames Christians

A cleric, Bishop Godfrey Onah, has blamed Christians in the National Assembly (NASS), for the recent passage of the 2020 Companies and Allied Matters Bill (CAMA), signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Onah, who is of the Nsukka Catholic Diocese, said in a remark during the Sunday Mass that if Christians in NASS had opposed the bill, it would not have been passed into law.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on Aug. 7, signed the CAMA bill into law, giving provision for religious bodies and charity organisations to be regulated by the registrar of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), and a supervising minister.

“The question many Christians have been asking is, where are Christian legislators during the debate of this bill and its passage in the National Assembly?
“Because, if they had opposed this bill on the floor of the house, it would not have been passed and sent to the president for assent.

“I blame Christian legislators for doing nothing and allowing the passage of the 2020 CAMA Act,” he said.

Onah, however, wondered what the Federal Government wanted to achieve in monitoring how the finances of churches in the country are managed when it contributed no dime to the church, NAN reports.

“Government should focus and monitor its ministries, agencies and other government institutions where it budgets billions of Naira annually and not church offerings.

“Had it been that the government gave allocations to churches and decided to monitor its usage, nobody will question the government,” he said.

CAMA: Churches told not to comply with Buhari’s ‘anti-Christ’ law

The Christian Rights Agenda, CRA, has described the newly-enacted Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) as an anti-Christ law from the pit of hell.
The CRA, in a statement to DAILY POST on Sunday, said the obnoxious provisions of the Act are satanic verses passed by the 9th National Assembly to fight the church, Christians and Christianity in Nigeria.

It noted that Nigeria is a secular state which does and should not in anyway be seen to be controlling the church without a corresponding policy against Islamic activities across the country under the Buhari administration.

“How can religious organisations be made to account to an agency of government?” The group wondered.
“How can an agency of government like the Corporate Affairs Commission CAC, dissolve and appoint board of elders and General Overseers for the church?
“How can a government agency regulate and control the church?

Every church has it’s own unique way of governing itself as ordained by the Almighty God.

“The clauses in the new CAMA is nothing but a plot to break the church and halt the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ in Nigeria.”

Recall that the CRA had raised the alarm recently on the lopsided composition of the leadership of the National Assembly with the two chambers in firm control of Muslims as President of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Deputy Speaker of the House, majority leaders of the both Senate House of Representatives and other principal officers and key committee chairmen.

Under the above circumstances, the CRA said it was not surprised that such a satanic legislation was passed.

“We call on the Christian Association of Nigeria to appoint liaison officers for both Senate and House of Representatives who will keep an eye on every Bill and Resolutions being considered by the National Assembly in order to alert the Christendom.

“In the interim, we call on all churches not to comply with the satanic law as doing so will amount to surrendering the body of Christ to Satan and his agents.

“For it was Thomas Jefferson who said: ‘If a law is unjust, a man is not only right to disobey it, he is obligated to do so.’

“We also urged the National Assembly to as a matter of national emergency amend the law to remove the satanic clauses in the interest of peace, unity and prosperity of Nigeria.”

Nigerians Slam Aisha Buhari Over Call For ‘Better Hospitals’
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-23-2020, 05:34 PM - No Replies

Quote:Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Buhari, on Saturday, returned from medical treatment in the United Arab Emirates, calling for improved hospitals in the country.

But many Nigerians on social media are furious over her demand, accusing her of being insensitive.

Some of them also described her demand as “shameful and insulting”.

On her return, she had asked healthcare providers to take advantage of the Federal Government’s N100bn credit support for the health sector, saying that “will no doubt help in building and expanding the capacity of the Nigerian health sector and ultimately reduce medical trips and tourism outside the country.”

Reacting to the First Lady’s comment, one Bulama Bukarti on Twitter said, “Your husband spent huge money on the Villa clinic, yet it couldn’t treat ‘neck pain’.

“You flew to the UAE during lockdown. As you land, you called for better hospitals. Don’t you know who the president is? Don’t you have access to him?”

Mosh @mosh_aloaye added, “This is so sad. Now she left Nigeria amidst the international travel restrictions for medical tourism and came back to say Nigerians should fix our health sector. I feel very insulted.”

Goddy @i2much4dem wondered why the Aso Rock clinic could not be made a “better hospital” to treat neck pain.

“And this is the wife of the president. What reforms does the Aso Rock clinic require for it to function? Yet Aisha has to fly abroad for treatment!”

“Aisha Buhari is simply mocking Nigerians by calling for better hospitals in Nigeria when she knows that her husband is the president and the one who should give us the ‘better hospitals’. The president and family members are simply being most unfair to Nigerians,” TheRoy @BarrROUN1990 said.

MostKnownUnknown @brandengineer said, “This announcement is already a setback to the integrity of your husband’s leadership. The presidential clinic is not capable of giving you top-quality medical treatment while gulping money annually on allocation…mighty shame!”

Nwa Oke Osisi @OnyekaMadu5 lamented that “It’s a shame that after over five years, it is unfortunate that the administration headed by your husband cannot build and equip a single hospital good enough to be patronised by yourself to end medical tourism at our collective expense.”

CoachSteve @StephenOlateru noted that “What do these guys take us for? Travelled for ear infections, neck pain, headache yet after five years we should take advantage of your largesse?”

“This woman annoyed me to my bone mirror, the other day her husband Buhari jet out to the UK to treat ear infection, now Aisha Buhari jet out to Dubai to treat neck pain, this first family had no regard for Nigerians at all, the insensitivity is mindboggling.,” Lucky Mikoyo

Tanko Yakassai: Why Tinubu Will Perform Better Than Buhari As President
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion

Quote:A former aide to ex-President Shehu Shagari, Tanko Yakassai, has insisted that Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was better than President Muhammadu Buhari.

Yakassai, who was a liaison officer to former President Shehu Shagari, said if, given the opportunity, Tinubu would perform better than Buhari.

He explained that the efforts of the APC National Leader in transforming Lagos State when he was governor were indications that he is more competent than Buhari.
Speaking in an interview in Kano, Yakassai said Tinubu was better at planning than Buhari and stressed that planning is what makes a better leader.

According to the elder statesman: “If you are talking of making a better president, to be honest with you, I think if Tinubu can get the APC ticket and is elected, he will perform better than Buhari. I do not doubt in my mind.

Go to Lagos and see what Tinubu did, when I went for an occasion, I took my time on the day of my arrival to go and have a look at Lekki.

In my opinion, Tinubu can make a better president than Buhari.

“What makes a better political leader in government is the plan. If you have a plan, you can do it; without a plan, you cannot perform,” Daily Times reports.

Three suspects have been arrested and are now cooling their heels in a Police Cell for allegedly killing and dumping the body of a Deputy Crimes Police Officer in a well.

They committed the act in Eleme Local government area of Rivers State after receiving ransom from the victim’s family.

The three suspected kidnappers, 23-year-old Philemon Barrifa, 32-year-old Okechukwu Emmanuel and 33-year-old Barrisitom Gbara, were arrested in connection with the alleged abduction and murder of SP Moses Egbede, the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) of Afam Police Division in Oyigbo Local Government of Rivers State.

DAILY POST reports that Operatives of the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB) and Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Nigeria Police coordinated the operation.

Late Egbede was reportedly beaten to death by the gang with his corpse said to have been thrown into a well located in a bush at Paya/Agbeta community, Eleme Local Government Area after his family paid a ransom for his release.

An official of FIB told newsmen in Port Harcourt that Egbede was abducted on July 21, 2020, but after the collection of ransom from his family on 30th July, the kidnappers reportedly refused to take calls from his family and thereafter switched off the phone they used to negotiate the ransom.

“This prompted the family members to approach the FIB and IRT to assist in the investigation,” he said.
Spokesman of the Rivers State Police Command, SP Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident.

Omoni in a statement said, “Operatives of the FIB and Team IRT on August 5th commenced an investigation and with the aid of technical support from TIU Abuja, the perpetrators were identified which led to the arrest of three of the gang members who allegedly confessed to have kidnapped and killed SP Egbede.

“One of the suspects, Philemon Barrifa, a 23-year-old male from Bomu town in Gokana Local Government Area but resident in Agbeta camp in Ebubu town Eleme, confessed that the officer was beaten to death after the collection of ransom because he dragged with them and pulled down the face mask of two of their gang members during his abduction.

“Barrifa confessed that kidnapping of the police officer was planned in his house and executed by himself and other gang members. He got the sum of N120,000 as a share of the ransom collected.

“Another suspect, Okechukwu Emmanuel aka Bike boy, a 32-year-old from Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia state also confessed to be in charge of monitoring the movement of security agents during the gang operations. He received N100,000 as share from the DCO’s ransom.

“The third suspect, Barrisitom Gbara, a 33-year-old from Gokana but resident in Agbeta camp in Ebubu town Eleme was said provided the live cartridges used for the kidnapping of the police officer to the gang members through Philemon Barrifa.”

SP Omoni added that the suspects are cooperating with the operatives to track down other members of the gang now at large, especially the gang leader who allegedly brought the two AK47 used for the abduction.

Maryanne Barry: Trump's Sister Criticized Him In Leaked Audio Record
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-23-2020, 01:46 PM - No Replies

In a secret recording by Donald Trump's niece, the most scathing criticism yet of Trump's administration and personality, has been revealed to be coming from nowhere else but Trump'sfamily members themselves.

In the recording made available to the press,
Maryanna, Donald Trump's older sister,
was heard calling him "cruel", a "phoney" and a "liar", and also suggesting that he had his SATs written for him.

New York Times has more:

Quote:WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s older sister, a former federal judge, is heard sharply criticizing her brother in a series of recordings released Saturday, at one point saying of the president, “He has no principles.”

Maryanne Trump Barry was secretly recorded by her niece, Mary Trump, who recently released a book denouncing the president, “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man.” Mary Trump said Saturday she made the recordings in 2018 and 2019.

In one recording, Barry, 83, says she had heard a 2018 interview with her brother on Fox News in which he suggested that he would put her on the border to oversee cases of immigrant children separated from their parents.

“His base, I mean my God, if you were a religious person, you want to help people. Not do this,” Barry says.

At another point she says: “His goddamned tweet and lying, oh my God." She adds: “I’m talking too freely, but you know. The change of stories. The lack of preparation. The lying. Holy shit.”

Barry can also be heard saying that she guesses that her brother has never read her opinions on immigration cases.

“What has he read?” Mary Trump asks her aunt.

Barry responds: “No. He doesn’t read."

The recordings were first reported by The Washington Post. The Associated Press then obtained the recordings.

The recordings came to light just a day after the late Robert Trump, brother to Maryanne and the president, was memorialized in a service at the White House. Later, the president was dismissive of the recordings.

“Every day it’s something else, who cares. I miss my brother, and I’ll continue to work hard for the American people,” Trump said in a statement. “Not everyone agrees, but the results are obvious. Our country will soon be stronger than ever before.”

In the weeks since the release of Mary Trump’s tell-all book about her uncle, she has been questioned about the source of some of its information. Nowhere in the book does she say that she recorded conversations with her aunt. On Saturday, Mary Trump revealed that she had covertly taped 15 hours of face-to-face conversations with Barry.

“Mary realized members of her family had lied in prior depositions,” said Chris Bastardi, a spokesman for Mary Trump. He added: “Anticipating litigation, she felt it prudent to tape conversations in order to protect herself."

The president has frequently spoken highly of his sister; the recordings are the first time a family member, outside of Mary Trump, has been critical of him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBIvDQKOCQM

The recordings illuminate the tension between the president and his sister. At one point Barry says to her niece: “It’s the phoniness of it all. It’s the phoniness and this cruelty. Donald is cruel.”

Mary Trump’s book was filled with attacks on her uncle, including the assertion — he denied it — that he paid someone to take the SATs for him as he sought to transfer into the University of Pennsylvania.

In one recording, the federal judge says that a Joe Shapiro took the test for Trump. The president was friends with a person at Penn named Joe Shapiro, who is deceased. Shapiro’s widow and sister told have said he never took a test for anybody.

Bastardi said of Mary Trump: "She never expected to learn much of what she heard, including the president’s sister, federal judge Maryanne Trump Barry, state that Donald Trump had paid someone to take an SAT exam for him.”

Fortunes have come the way of Oreofeoluwa Lawal-Babalola, a young boy who went viral in a recent video begging his mother to Calm Down and rest a little, when mother tried to whip him.

This is just as an Abuja-based real estate outfit, T Pumpy Concept Limited has signed the young boy as one of its brand ambassadors, NIGERIA DEFEDNER reports.

The 4-year-old kid became a social media sensation after a video of him trying to convince the mum from punishing him in a dramatic way him went viral online.

She promised to do everything within her power to make sure the young man attains his dreams.

When asked to comment on his new endorsement, a visibly-elated Oreofeoluwa said “before you buy any land in Abuja, calm down and come to T Pumpy Estate, the developer that cares and your future is assured.”

Kaduna government files criminal charges against Anglican bishop

Abiodun Ogunyemi, the Anglican bishop of Zaria diocese has been arraigned before a chief magistrate’s court in Kaduna over alleged “defamatory remarks” he made against Governor Nasir el-Rufai.

The Bishop who was arraigned on charges bordering on criminal defamation, injurious falsehood and criminal intimidation, had criticised the governor over the planned demolition of 110-year-old St George Cathedral in Zaria.

In a statement released in November 2019, Ogunyemi said that El-Rufai will never be president even though he is being groomed to take over from President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

However upon being arraigned on, the Biship pleaded not guilty and was granted bail. A member of the Kaduna Synod and a canon of the cathedral church of St Michael Kaduna stood in as surety.

The director of public prosecutions hinted that a peaceful resolution of the case is ongoing and the defence counsel also agreed to this.

The magistrate subsequently adjourned the case to October 28, 2020 for continuation.

An Anglican Priest and his son were kidnapped on Saturday, August 22, in Kaduna State.

Reverend Meshach Luka and his 10-year-old son were reportedly abducted at midnight, the Hausa Christian Foundation, HACFO, revealed.

Hausa Christians have called for prayers for the release of the Reverend and his son. They also called for prayers to an end to the senseless killings and kidnappings in southern Kaduna.

Babachir Lawal: How Tinubu, Others Packaged Buhari For Nigerians
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion

Quote:A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, who was sacked from office over allegations that he misappropriated funds, Babachir Lawal, tells HINDI LIVINUS that the party risks losing the next presidential election if some things are not done

Some members of the All Progressives Congress, including Mamman Daura, a nephew of the President, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), have said competence and not zoning should be the key determinant for the President’s successor in 2023. What do you think about it?

You said some senior members of our party, but I am not aware that Mamman Daura is a card-carrying member of our party. Ideally, Daura is supposed to be considered as an elder in the North on account of his age and achievements in public service. On that basis, we accord him a level of respect to the extent that his comments will carry weight.

But since he has never contested any position, either in the party or in government, we will not take his comments on zoning very seriously. My own inclination is to take it as a personal opinion. The issue of zoning is a very critical component of the Nigerian entity. Zoning is not entrenched in the APC constitution nor is it in our (Nigerian) constitution but a political party is in the business of politics to win elections.

And for any political party to be successful, it has to take into consideration the diverse demography and political structure of its constituents. Don’t forget that our politics is built on some fundamental understanding, though not legal. First, there is the issue of religious balance. We want a country in which every Nigeria feels secure to live their life in a peaceful and prosperous manner in an environment created by the government. Any political party that ignores this is obviously digging its grave. Nigerians like to count the numbers of Muslims and Christians in the Federal Executive Council to see if there is balance.

And one of the things Nigerians have criticised about the security architecture is the fact that they see the top echelons of the security service as being predominantly dominated by Muslims. To that extent, Christians find faults in whatever they do. I suspect that most of the calls that the leadership of the security agencies should be rejigged is because Christians don’t feel comfortable with the dominance of one religion, especially as cases of insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and so on, have soared and Nigerians have factored in the religious orientation of the perpetrators.

Two, politically, Nigerians want zoning in the polity. In states where the people are homogenous on the basis of religion and tribe, they tend to rotate power across the zones or blocs within the state. At the national level, it translates into North and South; that is the understanding and every Nigerian has come to accept it. That, however, does not mean that Nigerians do not believe that merits should count. But people who have merits are available in all parts of the country and are not localised to any geopolitical zone.

There are fears that the Peoples Democratic Party may field a northerner in 2023 and that it may give them an advantage if your party picks a southerner…

No! The PDP introduced the principle of zoning. Even the All Nigerian Peoples Party, the Congress for Progressive Change, and the Action Congress of Nigeria, which existed then but now defunct, never discussed zoning. The concept was largely successful because the party had elder statesmen like Adamu Ciroma, Alex Ekwueme, and Solomon Lar who could come up with a workable political structure acceptable to the generality of their party members when things got hot. Now, the APC has found itself in the same situation and has to toe that path, or else it will not win the next presidential election. To win the next election, the APC must apply the principle of zoning, though not clearly stated in the APC constitution. We believe by 2023, after the North has produced the President for eight years, the South should have a go at it.

Do you think that will be practical if the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, is again put forward by the PDP as its candidate? Don’t you think he will win by securing the majority of the votes from the North?

I am not thinking like that. Atiku Abubakar is from Adamawa State and is a northerner like me, but I will like to contest the basis of your statistics. The conclusion that the North produces the largest bloc vote is not true. The North-West geopolitical zone in the North tends to go in one direction all the time. The North-East tends to go in another direction. They have never voted along the same lines and we are not even talking about the Middle Belt.

If the South-West, South-East and South-South agree to vote for one party as they do in the North-West, the chances are that our so-called (northern) numerical strength may be challenged, and we may come off worst.

With Adams Oshiomhole and the APC’s National Working Committee’s removal and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s alleged presidential ambitions, do you think there could be divisions in the APC?

First of all, I want to declare that I am a Tinubu man. There’s no denying that there’s a Tinubu factor in the APC. Just like I was a Buharist and every time Buhari’s name was mentioned, I stood by it. But the crisis that started in the APC has nothing to do with 2023. It just had to do with the mismanagement of the party by those entrusted with that responsibility – namely the NWC.

We had a chairman that had deficiencies in management skills in a political system where everybody needed to be carried along. As much as possible, he was like Alexander the Great. In almost every state, because of his approach to politics and conflict resolution, there was crisis, even in states where the APC had no governors. So it got to a stage where everybody was fed up with having Oshiomhole as the chairman. However, there were some people who wanted Oshiomhole out more than the rest and members of the APC knew they had ulterior motives that were not altruistic, but majorly selfish.

Does the selfishness have anything to do with 2023?

Yes, like some governors who wanted to go back to the old days when they would sit down and decide what would happen and who got what in the party. Many within the party felt that as a former governor and labour leader, he would be able to stand up to the governors. We also felt that coming to that position with some affluence; he would not sell our party for pecuniary considerations.

But Oshiomhole, to some certain extent, did not give the governors one inch because he was autocratic or a dictator. And the governors who wanted to go back to running the party created a crisis. It got to a point when even those of us who ordinarily supported Oshiomhole later became disappointed because he so messed us up. But because those who wanted to throw him out were worse than him, we stood by him. They deployed all kinds of arsenal and Machiavellian tactics that no one after something good would be inclined to do. Some of us advocated for a ‘soft landing’ for him. Like every other human being, Oshiomhole had his weaknesses. He, however, started to change towards the end of his reign but it came too late. Those who wanted him out were more desperate. From my own observation, there is very little the national chairman of a party can do to impose a presidential candidate on their party.

Do you see Buhari supporting zoning ahead of 2023?

Buhari believes firmly and strictly in what is legal. Once you point out to the President that this is what the law says, he goes with it and other considerations won’t matter. I don’t know what he will do but it is only necessary that any leader, whose tenure is running out, ought to show interest in who their successor will be. Not for personal reasons but for the continuity of their policies and programmes. To that extent, even if Buhari is not inclined towards it. I will urge him to.

Do you think the President would support that power should move to the South?

When we were in the CPC, we got many votes but didn’t win. But there were other challenges; there was an unhealthy perception that Buhari was a religious bigot. He was also seen as someone who would be hard on corrupt persons and many groups didn’t feel they would be safe if he became the President, especially the Christian community. So we sat down as a strategic group and thought of what we could do.

Which bloc could give us the votes that could make Buhari to become the President? There was no other bloc other than the South-West bloc, which had the defunct ACN in control of states in the South-West as a regional party. This was done as far back as 2010, so we planned to have a merger before the 2011 general elections. But time ran out on us. The merger didn’t work. After the loss, we were encouraged to start the merger process again. I remember a letter from the chairman of the CPC Board of Trustees directing our committee to work with the ACN, only towards having a merger. It was when we read his letter for discussion that we decided that we should not restrict it to the ACN. We moved to include the ANPP.

One of our specific goals was to make Buhari the President. Tinubu was a colossus of South-West politics. If he had said there would be no merger, there wouldn’t have been any merger. By the time we went to the APC national convention, the North-West was not with Buhari. The North-West people were either for Atiku or Rabiu Kwankwaso; most of them, at least. The late Inuwa Abdulkadir and I continued to pile pressure on Tinubu, giving him the statistics. There was no point supporting a candidate that would not win the election. We told Tinubu that this man had 12 million votes, and that there could be two million votes for Atiku and four or five million votes for Kwankwaso at best, and that it would not translate to any electoral victory.

It became very clear that Buhari was going to win that primary election once Tinubu declared publicly his support for him and accepted that the South-West would vote for Buhari.

Between Wednesday and Thursday (before the convention), it was clear Tinubu and Bisi Akande were going to support Buhari and the North-West had no choice but to support Buhari, otherwise they were going to lose out. So if Tinubu had not conceded at that point, I think probably Kwakwanso would have won the presidential nomination of the APC. For that reason alone, you can see Tinubu’s contributions to the emergence of Buhari as President and his role in building the party.

Everybody knows Buhari had no money and he doesn’t play money politics. So he won his presidential primary election without spending money. Also, Buharists didn’t have money; they only had ideas, zeal and fanaticism. And politics requires money. Tinubu, who had his tentacles spread across the corporate world, was the only man who knew where and how to raise the funds needed. He was the one that reached out to all the ‘big men’ who were at the time scared of the then President Goodluck Jonathan. These were all rich men that depended on government’s patronage. But somehow, Tinubu was able to persuade some of them to support Buhari. We had so many experiences, Timipre Sylva (now Minister of State for Petroleum Resources) and I thought we could do it but found out we couldn’t until Tinubu came in and we won the election.

How did you manage to turn around the negative perceptions the public had of Buhari?

At the time, Nigerians saw Buhari as just a wood. He had no emotions. People weren’t seeing him as a loving husband and father, and doubted if he could be humane. It was Tinubu who brought in consultants from the US – the firm behind the successful execution of President Barrack Obama’s campaign. It helped to repackage Buhari to Nigerians. They came and started from the scratch; they did some research work for us. They told us where Buhari was weak and the messages needed to change the long held perception, using billboards and other campaign methods.

That was when you started seeing Buhari wearing a suit, and in Igbo, Yoruba and Kanuri attire. It was then people started to see Buhari as a family man with his beautiful daughters.

The strategy was to transform his image and show a humane, loving and trustworthy person. It helped us. At some point during our strategy sessions, the consultants asked us: why don’t you allow Buhari’s wife to come out so that she can be contrasted with Dame Patience Jonathan? When you do that, you would have won the election already, they said. She provided a contrast to the former First Lady.

Rallies don’t win elections. It is the underground work that wins elections. Almost the same thing repeated itself in 2019. Tinubu doesn’t like to take credit for what he does; he lives for politics, gets his money from politics and spends it on politics. He has no other interest except politics. The monies he spent out of his pocket that are unaccounted for outside of the party’s campaign finances, are quite enormous. I know this because he’s my friend and because I am also involved in the Buhari government. So when there is a crisis, I am the one whose duty is to run to the South-West.

Therefore, except we want to bring the wrath of God on our heads, which we don’t want, the party must create an environment that is free and fair for anybody who wants to contest, including Tinubu, to do so. Allow the delegates, who must have emerged through a similarly free and fair process, decide who they want to vote for. It will be our duty as ‘Tinubu’s boys’ that time to say, ‘Let us vote for Bola’.

By the way, what did we get from several years that the Presidency has resided in the North? Along that line, we have also had vice presidents who were northerners. We have had presidents who were northerners but for some reason, the system is not improving. Presidency from the North is like an albatross around our neck. We northerners can do with power going elsewhere so that at least, we can now complain. But you cannot be holding on to power while things are not working fine. Let us also be able to complain, especially those of us who play active roles in the country.

There have been problems between the Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), and the suspended Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, people that should be working together to promote the President’s anti-corruption war. How bad do you think this is for the country?

Like the Bible says, the heart of man is desperately wicked: who can phantom it? The conducts of certain people, whether in government or not, is incomprehensible to a normal person with a decent character. Both of them are like my younger brothers. I have known Malami since I was in the CPC and only got to know Magu when I was in government. And I like his sense of duty and commitment to his job. That’s all I know about him. I don’t know however if there had been attempts to address these issues in another way before the options were exhausted and the issues resulted in the escalation of those differences.

What I consider painful in all this is that this government has fought corruption and committed all its energies and resources to fighting corruption irrespective of the parties the people they go after belong to. Some are politically motivated; some are not right. I would not be self-serving if I say take my own case, for instance. This issue has given the international community the impression that we are not serious about our anti-corruption campaign. When I was removed as SGF, the general outcry was that because of my closeness to Buhari, they wanted to weaken my flanks so that they could come after me.

But now in the case of Magu, the narrative is that corruption is fighting back. These are the impressions and the consequences of such conducts. Initially I had the feeling that the system would come after Magu, especially the press and the social media. If you are very discerning, you will know they are with him. The preponderance of opinions is in support of Magu’s position. The views being laid out are as if it is a witch-hunt. There are better ways to end Magu’s reign because no matter what anybody tells you, Magu tried. I used to joke that if you are a thief and you are caught by Magu, nobody can release you unless you cut off his hands.

2023 presidency: Atiku told to back off, as Northern politicians get commendation

Olusegun Bamgbose, Esq., National Coordinator, Concerned Advocates for Good Governance, CAGG, has told a former Vice President and business mogul, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to shelve any ambition he might be nursing for the presidency in 2023.

He pointed out that Northern politicians such as Tanko Yakassai, Paul Nnongo, Balarabe Musa, Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Senate President Ahmed Lawal and others have spoken the minds of the people in the region which Atiku should respect.

Recall that Tanko Yakassai had declared that Tinubu would make a better President than Muhammadu Buhari. Some prominent Northern politicians had also in recent weeks declared support for Southern Presidency come 2023.

“Tanko Yakassai, Paul Nnongo, Balarabe Musa, Governor El-Rufai, Ahmed Lawal and others will forever be respected and reckoned with, in the scheme of things,” Bamgbose said in chat with DAILY POST on Sunday.

“They are the new faces of great Nigerians. They deserve to be commended for standing for what is just and equitable.

“They have actually spoken the mind of the North. It’s on this basis, I’ll humbly urge Atiku Abubakar, to shelve his presidential ambition come 2023 Presidential elections.

“He should respect the views of these noble, patriotic and detribilised Northerners. In 2007, I kicked against the third term of Olusegun Obasanjo, this is well known to Atiku.

“In 2005, Atiku graciously granted me a private audience. I told him clearly that third term agenda will fail and to God be the glory, it failed.

“The success of third term agenda, would have eternally dented the political image of the Yorubas. I put my life on line to kick against it.

“In 2015, I supported Buhari because I believe it’ll be unjust for a Southerner to hold on to power.
“This is what is being replicated by these noble Nigerians. One will therefore strongly advise Atiku to jettison his presidential ambition.

“The best bet for him is to support a Southerner to emerge as the next President of Nigeria, come 2023. His name will be written in gold, if he will summon the courage to do this.

“When it comes to holding this nation together, the North should be respected. As President, the North will never for one day regret they supported a Southerner, to emerge as President.”

Boko Haram now recruiting IDPs — Governor Zulum

Governor Babagana Zulum has raised an alarm of  internally displaced persons (IDPs) being recruited by Boko Haram insurgents.

In an interview with the Hausa Service of BBC, the Borno state Governor noted that his government has been able to return displaced persons to Mafa and Kukawa, while plans were on to return people to Kawuri. He added that the IDPs are tired and bored of staying in the camps because they were not getting what they really wanted.

Zulum said;

Quote:“Truly, the Boko Haram sect is working on people to join them. This is frightening. If the IDPs living in camps could not get what they are looking for, especially the opportunity to go back to their various towns and return to farm, they may be forced to join the Boko Haram sect.
“It is important that they go back to their various towns because no government can continue to be feeding them continuously.

“The sect members are hiding at the Lake Chad area and the Sambisa forest. There will still be problems unless they are traced to their hiding places. Chasing them away from their headquarters is one of the solutions towards ending insurgency."

On if insurgents still occupy some places in Nigeria, Governor Zulum said;

Quote:“Truly, there is no place under the occupation of Boko Haram. But there are places with no people there. What I mean is that people are yet to return to their places of origin.”
“I swear by Allah, before the coming of Buhari, the security situation in Borno had deteriorated. At that time, 20 local government areas were under Boko Haram. Now, it’s not so.”

The Borno state Governor who revealed that the military are doing their best in the fight against insurgency, added;

Quote:“One surest way to end Boko Haram is ensuring a good relationship between the military and civilians.
“I keep on saying wherever you go; you will see the military and vigilante together. But what I am saying is that the military should provide protection to the civilians to enable them return home and go back to their farms.
“But what is disturbing us is, when shall this war with Boko Haram come to an end?”

Recounting the attack he and his convoy got into in Baga, the Governor described it as shameful and further maintained that whatever is done to hinder the fight against Boko Haram is an act of sabotage, including failure to use money and buy arms.

He said;

Quote:“I was not afraid because I rely on Allah. Nothing will happen to a Muslim unless by the will of Almighty Allah.
“I was attacked with bombs but Almighty Allah protected me. We must be brave; if we continue to fear, the war will not end."

UNILAG Acting VC, Soyombo steps down

Professor Omololu Soyombo, the newly-appointed acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has stepped down from his position “with immediate effect”.

Recall that Soyombo was given the appointment, following the sack of Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe as the School's Vice Chancellor.

In  a statement released on Saturday August 22, Soyombo said his decision to step down was hinged on the federal government's directive to UNILAG Senate to nominate an acting VC for the institution.

His statement read;

Quote:“The news of the setting up of a Special Visitation Panel to the University of Lagos by the Federal Government was received in the evening of Friday, 21st August 2020.

“The government also directed the University Senate to nominate an Acting Vice-Chancellor for the University, for confirmation by the Governing Council. With this, I am stepping down, with immediate effect, as Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University.

“I wish to express my sincere appreciation to all members of staff and our dear students, the staff unions, alumni and the general public for their wonderful support and cooperation in the past 10 days since my appointment as Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University on 12th August 2020.

“As I noted in my address to a cross-section of staff on 19th August 2020, I accepted the offer to serve as a call to service, with the objective of restoring peace and stability in the university.

“It is my prayer that the peace and stability that we so much need and desire at this time be restored very quickly so that the University of Lagos can continue to march on as the University of First Choice and the Nation’s Pride.”

US Cuts Nigerian Oil Imports By 11.67 Million Barrels
User Avatar Forum: Oil/Gas

Quote:The United States slashed its imports of Nigerian crude oil to 9.37 million barrels in the first five months of this year, 11.67 million barrels lower than what it bought in the same period of 2019.

The US imported 21.03 million barrels of Nigeria crude from January to May 2019, according to data obtained from the US Energy Information Administration on Friday.

The highest monthly volume of Nigerian crude purchased by the North American country so far this year was 2.12 million barrels, compared to 11.78 million barrels in 2019.

Its purchases plunged by 63.03 per cent in the first quarter of 2020 to 5.53 million barrels, compared to the last quarter of 2019 when it bought 15.07 million barrels from Nigeria.

The US bought 1.92 million barrels in January; 1.93 million barrels in February; 1.68 million barrels in March; 1.70 million barrels in April, and 2.12 million barrels in May, according to the EIA.

The US has significantly reduced imports of Nigerian crude oil in the past few years as the oil produced in its shale operations is similar to the light sweet Nigerian crude.

Following the coronavirus-induced crash in oil prices and demand, Nigeria has been struggling to sell its crude oil cargoes.

Prior to the lockdowns and collapse in crude oil demand caused by coronavirus crisis, the rise of US shale oil was already proving uniquely challenging for Nigeria.

Booming production from shale drastically cut Nigerian exports to the US – once the destination for about 40 per cent to 50 per cent of the country’s cargoes.

US imports of Nigerian crude fell from 148.48 million barrels in 2012 to 87.40 million barrels in 2013 on the back of the shale oil boom.

In 2014, when global oil prices started to fall from a peak of $115 per barrel, Nigeria saw a
For the first time in decades, the US did not purchase any barrel of Nigerian crude in July and August 2014 as well as June 2015, according to the EIA data.

In 2010, the US bought as much as 358.92 million barrels from Nigeria, but slashed its imports to 280.08 million barrels in 2011.

“The United States produces a large share of the petroleum it consumes, but it uses imports to help supply domestic and international markets,” the EIA said.

In 2019, the country produced about 19.25 million barrels per day of petroleum, and it consumed about 20.46 million bpd.

The agency said imports from other countries helped to supply domestic demand for petroleum.

“Some of the crude oil that the US imports are refined by US refineries into petroleum products (such as gasoline, heating oil, diesel fuel, and jet fuel) that the US exports,” it added.

According to the EIA, some of the imported petroleum may be stored and subsequently exported.

It said the country imported about 9.10 million bpd of petroleum in 2019 from about 90 countries, which included 6.8 million bpd of crude oil and 2.3 million bpd of non-crude petroleum liquids and refined petroleum products, adding this was the lowest level of total petroleum imports since 1996.

COVID-19: FG has no plans for re-opening of universities – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has maintained it will not suspend the ongoing strike action.

National President of ASUU, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi said this during a stakeholder’s meeting at the Union’s Secretariat at the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Professor Ogunyemi said the federal government has continually failed to fulfill its Memorandum of Action agreed in 2019, insisting that the federal government may trigger another round of crisis should it force ASUU members into the IPPIS Scheme.

He noted that unlike other sectors, nothing has been put in place by the federal government in accordance with the COVID-19 health protocols for reopening of schools adding that, “Students’ hostels, lecture rooms and laboratories do not meet standards of schools in other countries”, which he said is part of the reasons for the strike.

“The narratives coming from government quarters does not edify what the University stands for. What they have said about us does not represent what we are doing but because they have polluted us with those undeserving of the job.

“As we speak, IPPIS is recruiting people without subjecting them to due process of employment. They are polluting and diluting the configuration of Academia.

“We will revisit the whole thing after this strike. Any department or Faculty where you think due process was not followed in recruiting staff, reject them. We will stand by you.

“The Nigerian Project cannot be made possible unless our Universities rise to the occasion. Our stakeholders have a duty to listen to all parties.

“The ASUU strike of 2013 that lasted 6months, we wrote about 59 letters and had 20 meetings but in this ongoing strike we’ve written about four letters and we’ve had few meetings. We’ve met with the Senate President and the Speaker and several Ministers but the only language they understand is strike action,” he said.

The ASUU Chairman also accused Vice-Chancellors of diverting funds meant for the revitalization of universities.

He further advised the academic staff to avoid making themselves vulnerable to people he called economic vampires, threatening that plans are on the way to deal with all Vice-Chancellors involved in fraud.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

SUNDAY 23RD AUGUST.

FOLLOW GOD’S PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE

For we are God’s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live] (Ephesians 2:10 AMPC).

It’s important that you reflect on your life and be sure you’re walking in sync with the Spirit and following God’s plan for your life. If you give Him your attention, He’ll guide you aright always. Jesus said of the Holy Spirit, “...He’ll guide you into all truth” (John 16:13). Trust Him with your life, and He’ll lead and guide you in God’s perfect will for you.

When you’re walking in God’s plan, everything you require—within the ambits of His will for you—will be supplied at the right time. At every milestone in your journey, whatever you need will be in place, because you’re on the path that God planned for you.

Struggling would become unnecessary, because you’re on course and piloted by the Spirit.
Some people pursue ambitions that have no connection with the purpose of God for their lives.

They’re not yielded to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. God doesn’t want you doing something simply because others are doing it; seek and follow His guidance. Yield yourself to the Word. His Word is the true light.

The Psalmist said in Psalm 16:11, “Thou wilt shew me the path of life…”; how? Through the Word! His Word is a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path (Psalm 119:105). Through His Word, He leads you in the paths of success, victory, and boundless joy—those paths He already pre-arranged for you.

Your life shouldn’t be a labyrinth of circumstantial events; you’re not a child of chance. God prepared for you before you came, which means predestination is at work in you.

Never allow the fleeting pleasures of self-centred ambitions sway you. Don’t be perturbed by any unfavourable condition in which you may find yourself. Choose rather to follow and remain in God’s plan for your life, by serving Him wholeheartedly and living in His Word, and He’ll guide you to fulfil your destiny in Him.

PRAYER

Dear Father, through your Word and fellowship with the Spirit, you guide me to fulfil your destiny for me, bringing glory to your Name. I’m divinely helped of the Spirit, to make decisions and take actions which are in sync with your divine purpose, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

#TALKINGSESSION

Dear Lord, Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path! It is the compass by which I navigate through life, driving me in the path of righteousness, success, and prosperity.

My heart will forever trust in Your Word to do what it says, for not only is Your Word my best teacher, it also pilots me to the highest heights of success.

Thank You for the privilege of being seated with You in the realms of power and glory, far above all principality, power, might, and every domain of darkness!

I reign with You today over the circumstances of life and every negative force of nature, declaring that Your perfect and eternal will is fulfilled in my life – in my job, family, finances, and in the lives of those around me.

Thank You for giving me the authority to use the Name of Jesus, the Name which is above every other name. As I boldly use this Name today, demons tremble and situations bow before me. Hallelujah!

I declare that I’m living in divine health, absolute prosperity, unending success, abundant joy, and indescribable peace today.

Pantami Writes Buhari, Seeks End To Stamp Duty Crisis
User Avatar Forum: Market Place
Posted by: Edoman - 08-22-2020, 09:44 PM - Replies (1)

Quote:The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ibrahim Pantami, has assured stakeholders that the crisis between the Nigerian Postal Service and the Federal Inland Revenue Service over collection of stamp duties would soon be resolved.

He said he had written the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and engaged some top government officials on the way out.

Top officials of NIPOST and FIRS have been engaging one another in a war of words, especially on the social media, claiming exclusive rights to the collection of stamp duties.

But Pantami, while addressing journalists at a press conference to mark his one year in office on Thursday evening in Abuja, said a solution was in sight.

He said, “I have engaged the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning twice on the matter.

“I have also written to our boss, President Muhammadu Buhari. I am also engaging the Central Bank of Nigeria’s governor.

“I can assure you that the issue will be resolved officially soon.”

While answering a question, the minister said the planned privatisation of the Nigeria Communication Satellite Company Limited had been suspended.

He said he had never been in support of the planned privatisation, saying he prefers commercialisation especially because of the security issues involved.

Enumerating some of his ministry’s achievements in the last one year, Pantami said he had been able to achieve downward review of the Right of Way which had been hindering broadband penetration for 13 years.

He said his engagement with state governors had led to a reduction to the agreed maximum of N145/liner metre by some states while other states completely waved the charges.

For the Federal Government, he said no ROW charge would be collected between now and December.

This, he said, was the government’s palliative to corporate organisations during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“The implementation of the new ROW charges by these states will not only reduce cost of services but also improve their economy and ensure quality of service,” the minister said.

He added that the issue of unregistered and semi-registered SIM cards was resolved through his policy on SIM card registration and usage.

While recalling that 2.2million unregistered SIM cards were deactivated on November 14, 2019, Pantami said the step supported the nation’s security agencies by ensuring that SIM cards were not used for criminal activities.

He said the government was however evaluating the situation.

Mali Coup: Jonathan, Other West African Leaders Arrive In Bamako

Posted by: Edoman - 08-22-2020, 09:09 PM - No Replies

Quote:West African leaders arrived in Mali on Saturday to try to push for a speedy return to civilian rule after a military coup in the troubled nation.

The delegation, headed by former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan, planning to meet members of the new junta as well as ousted president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

Rebel soldiers seized Keita and other leaders after a mutiny on Tuesday, dealing another deep blow to a country already struggling with a brutal Islamist insurgency and widespread public discontent over its government.

Mali’s neighbours have called for Keita to be reinstated, saying the purpose of the delegation’s visit was to help “ensure the immediate return of constitutional order”.

A delegation official said they would meet members of the junta and later Keita, who is being held with prime minister Boubou Cisse in Kati, a military base northwest of Bamako where the coup was unleashed.

Adding to the international pressure, the United States on Friday suspended military aid to Mali, with no further training or support of the Mali armed forces.

– ‘We won’ –

But thousands of jubilant Malians took to the streets of Bamako on Friday to celebrate the toppling of Keita, who was reelected in 2018 but became the focus of widespread discontent.

The crowds gathered in Bamako’s central square draped in the national flag and blasting on vuvuzela horns.

The rally, originally organised as an anti-Keita protest by a loose coalition that has led months of mass rallies against him, was recast to “celebrate the victory of the Malian people”.

“I am overjoyed! We won,” said Mariam Cisse, 38.

Speaking at the rally Ismael Wague, spokesman for the junta which calls itself the National Committee for the Salvation of the People, paid tribute to the public.

“We merely completed the work that you began and we recognise ourselves in your fight,” he said.

Remove Obasanjo and Wike as speakers at our conference- Muslim lawyers tell NBA leadership

The Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria has asked the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association to remove ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo and Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, as speakers at the forthcoming Annual General Conference of the NBA scheduled for August 26 to 29.

This is coming on the heels of the leaderships decision to disinvite Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai from the AGM after some lawyers demanded he be disinvited. The lawyers argue that Governor El-Rufai has been overtime accused of human rights abuses.

The NBA leadership bowed to the pressure from the lawyers and disinvited the governor. Read here. This has however been met with stiff opposition. Members of the Jigawa state chapter and the Bauchi state chapter have threatened to boycott the AGM if the decision to disinvite the governor is not reversed.

In an interview with Punch on Saturday, August 22, the president of the Muslim Lawyers’ Association of Nigeria, Ibrahim Abikan, said his association has objected to having Obasanjo and Wike as speakers at the conference because they are allegedly guilty of the same allegations filed against Governor el-Rufai.

Quote:“We insist that if any standard is set for withdrawing el-Rufai, the same should apply to other speakers too. El-Rufai is a public officer and any other person who has the same record of allegations of human rights abuses should also be disqualified. We expect that the same standard should apply to Obasanjo and Wike.

People have started forwarding petitions to me of allegations of human rights abuses and disrespect for the rule of law against Obasanjo and Wike. They have started forwarding it to NBA Conference Planning Committee and the NBA as a body.

Our position is that whoever is going to be speaker should be able to give us quality presentation.” Abikan  said

The immediate past president of MULAN, Funminiyi Adeleke, in a separate interview, also condemned the decision of the association's leadership to disinvite Governor el-Rufai. He argued that Obasanjo and Wike do not have the pedigree to be speakers at the AGM.

Quote:“We looked at the parameters upon which el-Rufai was dis-invited. Other speakers on that platform are equally guilty. For instance, Obasanjo is one of the worst abusers of human rights in Nigeria. We know what happened at various times when he was in the military and when he came back as a civilian leader.
He doesn’t have the pedigree to be a speaker.

What of Wike? Wike is the first governor to declare his state as a Christian state, which is an affront to Section 10 of the Nigerian Constitution which states that no state shall adopt a religion as the state religion.

But even when confronted, Wike continues to say that Rivers is a Christian state. He has committed a lot of atrocities – he destroyed mosques, hotels, he did a lot of things and we have a catalogue on them.

Our position is that the NBA should drop Obasanjo and Wike and get any other person because if you dis-invited el-Rufai for disregard for the rule of law, the two other speakers on the platform are equally guilty.” Adeleke said

Other speakers at the conference with the theme, ‘Step Forward’, include Vice-President Yemi Osibanjo; House of Representatives Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila; Chief Justice of Nigeria, Tanko Muhammad; Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

Man tied up his ex-wife and made her watch as he mutilated her boyfriend's penis with a sword

A Spanish man tied up his ex-wife with electric cables and forced her to watch him mutilate her new partner's penis with a samurai sword at their holiday home in Portugal.

Carlos Sande Fidalgo and his former wife, Nuria Rodriguez Gonzalez, are said to have split in March 2020. However, he couldn't accept the end of the relationship, so he attacked her boyfriend after which he killed himself in a murder-suicide.

Carlos Sande Fidalgo ended his life by throwing himself off a nearby bridge after murdering his ex-wife's boyfriend, Luis Miguel Fernandez.

Police launched a manhunt when the woman, Nuria Rodriguez Gonzalez, managed to free herself after being made to witness her 53-year-old boyfriend's horrific murder.

The search ended when detectives discovered the sole suspect had ended his own life.

The tragic incident, which took place in a small Portuguese village of Gondufe, near the country's northern border with Spain, was still under investigation on Saturday August 15, as the full horror of the murder-suicide began to emerge.

The body of the alleged assassin, a real estate businessman based in the Galician city of Vigo, was found on Wednesday morning, August 19.

According to local reports, police investigators suspect Nuria's ex-husband placed a GPS tracker on her car so he could follow her movements following their split earlier this year.

Police sources said everything was pointing to the alleged killer breaking into the property his ex and her new partner were renting after tracking them down, and acting out of jealousy following his failure to accept the end of his marriage and his former wife's new relationship.

On the day he attacked, Fidalgo had his ex-wife's hands tied behind her back with electric cables. He then made her watch as he mutilated her boyfriend's genitals for about six hours with weapons including knives and another described as a Japanese sword known as a katana.

Police were alerted after the alleged killer left the property and his ex, who needed hospital treatment for shock and injuries caused by the ties around her wrists and legs, managed to alert the authorities.

He is understood to have fled the scene of the crime in his ex-wife's jeep before deliberately crashing it near the property and switching to a black BMW 740 he owned which was found near the bridge.

His body was found around 10am on Wednesday August 19, by coastguards participating in the search along with police.

Edo: PDP Urges UN, EU To Sanction Gambari & Oshiomhole
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6AC4gc0pjE

Quote:“Arrest him” video: Punish Gambari, Oshiomhole – PDP chair Secondus to world powers

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday charged the United Nation (UN), the European Union (EU) and other international bodies to place visa restriction on the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari; a former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, and other individuals as punishment for allegedly plotting to truncate democracy and good governance in Nigeria.

PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, at a press conference in Abuja also accused APC leaders of plots to use fake police and army to rig the September 19 governorship election in Edo State.

Secondus described Nigeria as a police state, saying that the federal government has put in place measures to muzzle free press and freedom of speech.

He also called on the National Assembly to probe how and why the presidential villa has become a place where plots to destroy democracy is being hatched.

The PDP’s position was informed by the ongoing controversy over a video that has gone viral in which Gambari and Oshiomhole were allegedly plotting how to rig the forthcoming governorship election in Edo State.

In the video, which the presidency has dismissed as fake, Oshiomhole was allegedly telling Gambari to arrest top PDP leaders in Edo State to facilitate APC being victorious in the election.

However, despite the presidency’s clarification and assurances by President Muhammadu Buhari and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure free and fair poll in the state, the PDP called on the international community to deny visas to members of the APC for plotting to endanger democracy and enthrone bad governance.

At the press conference, Secondus, surrounded by all members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, said: “We wish to also, draw the attention of the international community to this gross abuse of power to undermine the democratic process by critical staff that should defend it. We demand appropriate sanction of the individuals involved in this anti-democratic act; they should be given visa restrictions to any democratic countries.

“The interest and will of the people of Edo State should be paramount in all decisions and that should guide any action either by the INEC or the government. PDP remains vehemently opposed to any postponement of Edo and Ondo States governorship elections. September 19 and October 10 should be sacrosanct.”

He appealed to Nigerians to declare anybody or group working to truncate the ongoing electoral processes in Edo and Ondo States as enemies of democracy.

According to him, notwithstanding any plot to rig the Edo election, the PDP and its leaders will not allow the Kogi, Kano, Ekiti or Osun scenarios to play out in Edo State.

He said: “Let it be known, and clearly too, that the PDP is standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of Edo State to resist Oshiomhole’s fake police and other fake security operatives they are planning to import into Edo for the September 19 election.

“Nothing, and indeed, nothing will by any means whatsoever, be allowed to bend the will of the people in this Edo governorship election.

“We are deeply saddened that under the watch of an elected President Muhammadu Buhari who is a huge beneficiary of democracy, the nation’s highest seat of power is being used for the hatching of plans to undermine democracy.

“The Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, is such a strategic staff that when he is involved in any underhand thing, the president cannot free himself from it. The PDP is, therefore, calling on the National Assembly to call for the tape of the video and examine thoroughly its content with a view to acting appropriately.”

Secondus stated that the constitution and the Electoral Act are against any bid to undermine democracy by clamping down on the opposition.

He added that it’s unfortunate that the numerous problems overwhelming the nation is not disturbing the president and his party but how to blackmail and arrest the opposition.

Secondus said: “It’s also in our findings that the several efforts of APC leaders to arm-twist the INEC into falling for their devious move to shift the election. All these anti-democratic moves are all aimed at one thing – creating a constitutional logjam to disrupt the election because they know they cannot win.

“As all these underhand moves are crumbling before their eyes; the discredited former chairman of APC was smuggled into Aso Rock Villa to fine-tune the rigging strategy for Edo.

“The leaked video, which has been confirmed by the presidency, says it all – the plan to arrest and keep away all opposition leaders and clear the way for the rigging machinery of APC to roll through. This development is not only shameful but very unfortunate that the nation’s seat of power housing a democratically elected president has to be used to plan how to inflict harm on democracy.”

I was among those who spoke against withdrawal of El-Rufai's invitation, but we were in the minority - NBA President, Paul Usoro

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Paul Usoro has reacted to the association's withdrawal of Governor Nasir El-Rufai's invitation as a guest speaker at its Annual General Conference.

In a statement released on Friday August 21, Usoro who insisted that they will remain an association with no religious or ethnic bias or predisposition, revealed that he was among the minority which spoke against the withdrawal.

He added that though the Kaduna State Governor is his friend, he is answerable to the National Executive Council of the association and cannot overrule its decision.

The statement read;

Quote:“I have received several messages from our members that have attributed ethnic and religious considerations to the decision.

That is not correct and is very far from the truth. Neither the NBA nor NEC belong to any religious or ethnic group. We are lawyers and professionals dedicated to the ideals and the promotion and preservation of the Rule of Law and we belong to one indivisible family of the NBA.

“As I point out in my letter, neither the NBA nor NEC set out to sit in judgment against Mallam el-Rufai and even from that prism, the principle of fair hearing does not apply.

“We are one united Nigerian Bar Association with no religious or ethnic bias or predisposition and shall ever so remain."

Southern Kaduna people feel abandoned by their Governor - Catholic Bishops

The Catholic Bishops of Kaduna Ecclesiastical Province has reacted to the killings which has occurred in Southern Kaduna in the last few weeks.

The Ecclesiastical Province in a statement released by its secretary John Niyiring, stated that the region has been abandoned by their Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in their grief.

Recalling how the military announced that it had degraded Boko Haram and basked in the euphoria that Boko Haram was no longer holding Nigerian territory, the Bishops stated that almost the entire Northern states are in the grip of these purveyors of violence and death.

The statement read;

Quote:“Crises test the will of a leader. At times like these, emotions are not enough. At times like this, a leader must seek out support by adopting the twin track of diplomacy, using backroom channels and keeping an eye on restoring peace.

“Like the mother of twins, a leader at times like these must not be seen to be sleeping on one side! As with the federal government, we believe that the state government could do more in terms of showing empathy to the victims of these crisis.

“The people of Southern Kaduna feel abandoned by their Governor in their grief. We appreciate that these times test the will of any leader, but there is no substitute for sobriety, calm and focus
"Governor El-Rufai should consult across the spectrum, have the patience of listening even to those who do not agree with him and focus on persuasion and consensus building across the divide.

“We encourage him to visit the scenes of these tragedies and use the opportunity of condolences to scold as well as appeal to the hearts of his people.

“In the last few years, the purveyors of this violence have taken over the land and placed our security forces on the defensive. Hitherto, the nation’s main challenge was how to contain the dreaded terrorist group, Boko Haram.

“Two years ago, the military announced that it had degraded Boko Haram and basked in the euphoria that Boko Haram was no longer holding Nigerian territory.
“But our joy was short lived as the story has progressively gotten far worse.

Today, almost the entire Northern states are in the grip of these purveyors of violence and death. In the last three years, we have witnessed the relentless attacks and ransacking of entire communities by bandits in states like Benue, Kebbi, Plateau, Kaduna, Katsina, Nasarawa, Niger, Sokoto, Zamfara…
“All our communities still bear huge injuries and scars. We call on our governors to remain relentless in seeking to end this tragedy with greater urgency, dedication and sincerity.

There have been attempts at negotiations with these criminals by some governors and in some cases, huge sums of money have been paid.”
