US 2020 Election: Read Hilary Clinton's advise to Joe Biden on how to beat Donald Trump

Former US Democratic presidential nominee and Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton has given some advice to Joe Biden ahead of the November battle for the White House between him and   President Donald Trump.

Speaking on MSNBC on Friday August 21, the former first lady said Trump's irregularity as a candidate will make Biden have to navigate new waters. She advised Biden to be ready to debunk misinformation.

Clinton, who is the only person to have faced Trump in a general election race, said in order for Biden to beat Trump, he will have to continue to stick to his message without getting thrown off by the president.

She also advised Biden to be ready as Trump will give him an unlikely and highly unusual debate experience.

"There was a lot to learn and it was a new experience for all of us," Clinton said.
"There was so much going on under the surface on social media, and I don't think we did a good enough job being aware of and understanding the impact that such assertions and falsehoods could have."

She continued: "Try to get your message beyond the sort of reality show environment that [Trump] is trying to create so that the American people have an idea about why they would vote for you, not just against Donald Trump."
"Be prepared on that debate stage to be standing there with somebody unlike anyone you've been involved with before in politics, someone who lies with impunity, who literally will say anything, try to throw you off your game," she said

Clinton also said she is ready to help Biden and Kamala Harris, his running mate, through the election.

Clinton noted the uncertainty around the election, particularly as the White House campaigns against mail-in voting during the Coronavirus pandemic.

She added that it's "going to be a challenging campaign" facing an incumbent who "will say or do anything."

"They could win 3 million more votes, but not be on their way to the White House," Clinton concluded.

A 13 year-old boy allegedly abused by his father and stepmothers, has been rescued by the police in Borno state.

Humanitarian worker, Junaid Jibril Maiva, who shared the story online, said Aminu’s mother and father are separated and he had to stay with his father. The father and his other wives forced him to sleep in a dingy room beside a gutter and denied him food and other basic needs.

The police acting on a tip-off stormed the father's home in Baga Road in Maiduguri the state capital and rescued him.

The father and his wives are now in police custody.

Junaid in a post shared on his Facebook page, wrote

Quote:''It is heartbreaking and annoying how parents now a days treat their own child. This thirteen year old child was denied any form of parental support and shelter simply because his mother was divorced.

He was forced to sleeps in verandah beside a gutter without foods, clothes, talk less of net to protect him from malaria and other diseases.
Mallam Murtala from Mobbar LGA now living in Baga road Maiduguri confessed that he and his wives had thrown the child and serves him food once daily.

During investigation by management of National Human Rights Commission lead by Barr Jummai Mshelia accompanied by E-D WINN Madame Lucy Dlama ,it was gathered that the child (Aminu) step mothers always beat him without a reason.
When Aminu was served food, Spaghetti and stew to be precise, he ate like a hungry lion, it is disheartening and heart breaking seeing this child eating empty spaghetti without touching the stew, an indication that he had not seen stew for long. All this because his mother is not in the house.
After documentation, Barr Jummai lead team will take the child for more medical support.

Relevant stakeholders must take action on this increasing menace that is consuming us. Child abuse needs to be tackled in this country.

You may recalled this is similar case that happened in Kebbi where 12 year old Jibril was chained and detained for years in animal tents.''

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

SATURDAY 22ND AUGUST.

MAKING PROGRESS FROM GLORY TO GLORY

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before (Philippians 3:13).

Many people think of progress or success as having an increase in income, getting a promotion at work, buying a new house, etc. But true progress is more than these; it’s the development of your spirit through the Word and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. It’s that excellence which is obvious, first in your inner-man, and which inevitably radiates outwardly. It comes forth from the “you” in you.

When you have this awareness, you won’t be intimidated by the crises or challenges of life. That others are making progress doesn’t mean you’re failing. So, don’t measure your progress or lack of it by the success of others.

True success means living the victorious life through God’s Word, and achieving His desired goals for your life. It’s therefore unwise to measure your success by comparing yourself with someone else, because you may not know God’s plan for that person’s life.

Between you and the Lord, you can know whether you’re successful or not. You can look at your life today and tell whether you’re a success at the current phase of your life, for success is relative and measured at different phases in line with your divine purpose.

The life God has given you is one of everincreasing glory where you heap success upon success. If you’re successful now, He can count on you for more. Therefore, measure and celebrate your success at each point by comparing your performance or accomplishments with the set goals.

You can be a success at a certain level and then the goal broadens, the challenges are increased, but you must win at every level. When you overcome the challenges and attain those new goals, you become a success again at a new and higher level. It goes on that way from glory to glory. That’s God’s plan and idea for your success.

CONFESSION

Dear Father, thank you for showing me how to make progress at different levels of life. My gaze is on you only, and my drive and pursuit are on fulfilling your plan and purpose for my life. I refuse to compare myself with others, but measure my success in life with your Word and purpose for my life, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

#TALKINGSESSION

Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for the Holy Spirit who resides in me, filling me with miracle-working power.

My spirit is inundated with the anointing, such that it permeates my soul and moves upon my physical body, thereby making me invulnerable everyday to the assaults of the devil, and victorious everyday.

Thank You for guiding me in the path of life and leading me in the way of supernatural success and permanent prosperity.

My progress and advancement are evident and unstoppable. I am prospering in all that I do, because I live in, and by the Word, inspired always by the Holy Spirit to produce excellence.

Thank You for Your wisdom that propels me to act on Your Word always. I make my way prosperous and consistently experience good success as I meditate on the Word and speak it forth with boldness.

The power of God’s Spirit is activated in my life! Even now, I am strengthened with might by the Holy Ghost in my inner man!

I can do all things through Christ who energizes and infuses me with miracle-working ability! I am sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency! Hallelujah!

I flourish daily like the palm tree because I am continually filled with the Spirit. As I speak in tongues, I am edified; my spirit is lifted to function from a vantage position of boldness, audacity, and victory in Christ Jesus.

Grace and peace are multiplied in my life! I don’t struggle, but enjoy unstoppable growth and progress as I receive guidance and light from the Word, in Jesus’ Name. Amen. Hallelujah!

Two men arrested after being caught engaging in homosexual act

Two men were arrested in Angwete Village in Kakamega Town, Kenya on Friday morning while engaging in a homosexual act.

Nyumbi Kumi Initiative elder, Reuben Otiende disclosed that they had suspected that Wanyeso alias Gili was a homosexual after he recently “committed the crime with a neighbour’s son”.

Residents of the community broke down Wanyeso's door after they saw a non-native male person identified as Caleb Andani, enter his house. The duo who were caught red-handed in the act, were beaten to a pulp before the police intervened.

K2TV reported that Wanyeso is a divorcee who kicked his wife, Grace Khavetsa out of their matrimonial home last year. The former couple are blessed with three children.

A neighbour said;

Quote:“He (Wanyeso) broke up with his wife so that he could freely engage in homosexual acts"

Another resident said;

Quote:“We are urging the landlord of the house rented by this man (Wanyeso) to send him packing. We cannot tolerate homosexuality in this area. These are the men who will spoil our children."

Kakamega Central OCPD David Kabena also disclosed that the suspects will be arraigned once investigations are concluded.

Omokri’s Petition On Tinubu Breaks Record, 10,000 People Sign Petition In A Day
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-21-2020, 05:56 PM - No Replies

The petition urging the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to investigate a former Governor of Lagos, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has reached 10,000 signatures in just one day. This is a record, as no political petition on Nigeria has reached such numbers in so short a period of time.

The petition is specifically calling on the EFCC to investigate Bola Tinubu for contravening the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act of 2011, by having bullion vans ferry alleged large sums of money into his house on the eve of the 2019 Presidential election.

It will be recalled that on the eve of the 2019 Presidential elections, drone imagery showed bullion vans ferrying suspected monies into Mr. Tinubu’s Bourdilon residence. The next day, in an interview with Channel Television’s Seun Okinbaloye, Mr. Tinubu was asked “the allegations are that those bullion vans carry money or ballots”, before he could finish asking his question, Mr. Tinubu interjected and said “Is it my money or government money? I don’t work for government...even if I have money to spend in my premises, what’s your headache?”

However, the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 (and the amendment to the Act in 2012) makes it a crime for any individual to accept or make any cash payment that exceeds ₦5 million.

Yet, 18 months after this incident, Mr. Tinubu has not been investigated by the EFCC, which has tried others for lesser malfeasances.

The petition started by Reno Omokri, a bestselling author and activist, seeks to compel the EFCC to fulfil its constitutional responsibilities.

By virtue of the Economic and Financial Crimes commision Establishment act (2004), the law mandates the EFCC to combat financial and economic crimes. The Commission is empowered to prevent, investigate, prosecute and penalise economic and financial crimes and is charged with the responsibility of enforcing the provisions of other laws and regulations relating to economic and financial crimes.

NNPC, FIRS, Customs target N43.5trn revenue in 3 years

Top revenue generating agencies of the federal government like the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC; Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, and the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, have given themselves a target of N43.5 trillion revenue to be generated into the nation’s coffers in three years.
They dropped the hint on Thursday at the ongoing interactive session between the Senate joint Committees on Finance and National Planning, and heads of ministries, departments and agencies of the governments on the 2021-2023 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper, MTEF/FSP.
In their separate presentations at the session, the agencies, however, said that the realization of the projected revenues would be dependent on other intervening variables such as the crude price, among others.

A breakdown of the N43.5 trillion projected revenue, shows that FIRS has planned to generate N19.1 trillion, NNPC, N19.5 trillion and NCS, N4.927 trillion each between 2021 and 2023.

According to the chairman of FIRS, Mohmmed Nami, the revenue projection of the agency was based on projected oil production of 1.86 million barrels per day for 2021, 2.05 million barrels per day for 2022 and 2.38 million barrels per day for 2023.

He said: “The first assumption is that crude oil production will average 1.86 million barrels per day for 2021, 2.05 million barrels per day for 2022 and 2.38 million barrels per day for 2023. Crude oil price is projected to average $40 per barrel for three years. The exchange rate is projected at $360 to one United States dollar.

“The revenue projection for 2021 is N4.8 trillion, 2022 is N6.9 trillion and 2023 is N7.4 trillion.”

In his own presentation, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd), said: “In 2021, all things being equal, we should be able to generate a total of N1.465 trillion. In 2022, we expect that we should be able to generate N1.704 trillion. Then in 2023, hopefully, we will be able to generate N1.758 trillion.”

Also, the Group Managing Director of NNPC, GMD, Mele Kyari, who was represented by the Chief Finance Officer, CFO of the corporation, Umar Ajiya, promised improved revenue generation into the coffers of the government in the next three years.

He said: “Our revenue projections for the three-year period of 2021-2023 are as follows: in 2021, we projected to generate N5.6 trillion; in 2022, we projected to generate a revenue of N6.575 trillion and in 2023, we expect to generate a total of N7.37 trillion

25-year-old widow calls on police to arrest her husband's killers

A bereaved wife has begged the police to arrest her husband's killers.

Aderonke Balogun, 25, narrated how her husband, Sulaimon Ajayi, was rushed to a hospital following an attack on him. He was later discharged but was admitted again when he developed complications. He died days later in the hospital.

Trouble began when members of Ijegemo-Omilende community in Ado-Odo area of Ogun state woke up to find the mutilated body of a young man who was murdered and some of his body parts carted away by an unknown person.

They decided to form a vigilante group to guard the community. Unfortunately, in their efforts to secure the community, another person, Sulaimon Ajayi, was killed after some hoodlums led by a resident of the community attacked their vigilante group on 5th of August at about 11:55 pm.

Recounting what happened, Sulaimon’s younger brother, Dauda Ajayi, who was at the scene of the incident, said: "I was with my brother on the day of the incident.

"A week before the attack, a young man was killed and his body parts removed in the community. So, we had to set up a vigilante to secure the community at night.

"On the night of the attack, at about midnight, we stopped a bike carrying two people to inquire who they are and where they were heading to at that time of the night.

"After we stopped them, we discovered they are resident in the community. But they flared up that we had no right to ask them where they were coming from at that time of the night.

"We were still talking with them when one of them hit me with his hands and we started fighting. My younger brother had to go notify the Oloriebi (family head) of the development.

"When the Oloriebi came out, he implored them to ensure peace and understand that it was the strange times that was responsible for the vigilante.

"While he was still speaking with them, one of them made a call that they were under attack and within a few minutes, over twenty young men with matchets, axe, broken bottles and charms invaded our compound and attacked us.

"We were outnumbered so they dealt with us seriously. They used cutlass that was laced with charm to matchet Sulaimon on his head while they hit my head with wood that has nails."

Wife of the deceased, Aderonke Balogun,25, said:  "I was inside sleeping when my husband was attacked, he was rushed to the hospital for treatment.  They refused to attend to him till we got police report. He was admitted for three days and discharged.

"Two days after he was discharged, his health began to deteriorate badly, his neck had become stiff, he couldn’t turn his neck left or right, he complained of headache and had begun to feel numb in his legs and arms.

"We had to rush him back to the hospital where doctors and nurses attended to him. He was placed on drip; the drip was still on him when he passed on.

"Immediately his attackers heard that my husband had died, they fled the community."

The mother-of-two added: "See how they have turned me into a widow at 25 and made my children fatherless. I have no power of my own but, I am pleading with the state government to intervene. I plead with the police to investigate this case and arrest the killers of my husband."

The case was initially reported at Ado-Odo police station in Ogun State before it was transferred to Elewaran Ogun state police command.

Two persons have been confirmed dead while several others sustained different degrees of injuries following a brake failure accident involving an unregistered Land Rover SUV.

The SUV reportedly veered off the road and rammed into a building at Panada, Isolo area of Lagos State.
According to eyewitnesses, who spoke to DAILY POST, the vehicle had hit several people along the roadside killing two persons, including an eight years child.
Confirming the incident, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Aswani Divisional Police Station, CSP Oyin Francess, said an investigation would be conducted to know the real owner of the vehicle since it is unregistered.

She said the vehicle has been evacuated to the police station while the injured persons including the driver have been taken to the hospital for treatment.
One eyewitness, Iya Fathia narrated: “I sell goods on that culvert. As the vehicle was approaching with reckless speed, I shouted at him to condemn his manner of driving in fact, he bashed the police patrol van stationed over there and what we saw next was that he was hitting people on the roadside before ramming into that building. It was then we moved closer to the place and realised that several people had been injured. On the spot, we saw a small girl lying lifeless on the floor as well as a man who was identified as Jelili on the floor.

“Several people were injured. The girl’s sister was hit and sustained serious injuries. There were another four victims from a family. The accident was so serious that we don’t know the number of people that were injured because the casualties were too much.

A woman was selling Dokunu over there, her leg was broken with her small girl also injured. The community has since been thrown into great grief.”

It was learnt that the eight-year-old girl was the only child of her father – who was identified as ‘Akure’ and had followed her maternal stepsister out to get what she was going to eat when the unfortunate accident happened.

The eight year old girl’s father was seen crying uncontrollably while he received sympathisers.
He said, “if I am at home she wouldn’t have gone out. She knew everything about me. Whenever I and her mother got into a misunderstanding, she knew how to calm me down. She knew what I wanted and what I detest. Where is my Eniola!”

A family friend, Pastor Mrs. Ezekiel Ojomo, explained that the little girl had followed her sister out to get food without the consent of their mother.

She said the mother would not have allowed her to follow her sister.

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Edo State governorship elections, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has insisted he is not desperate to become governor.

Ize-Iyamu previously contested in 2016 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but lost to the incumbent, Godwin Obaseki, who was then the APC candidate.

However, both men have switched parties ahead of next month’s polls.

Ize-Iyamu, speaking to journalists on Thursday, said if he loses, he will head to the courts and not instigate violence.

“A man who genuinely wants to serve cannot be desperate. It is not compulsory that I should be the governor.

“If God wills, I will win. I assure you that if I lose the election, the worst that can happen is that I will go to court but I won’t resort to violence. We have warned our supporters against violence,” he said.

Mystery as 4-year-old boy and his mum are found dead with their bodies 'eaten by animals' in Italy

Police in Italy are investigating the death of a 4-year-old boy and his mother who both went missing before they were found dead with their bodies 'eaten by animals' in Sicily.

The corpse of DJ Viviana Parisi and her son Gioele Mondello, 4, were found five days apart after they went on an apparent shopping trip on August 3.

Her grey Opel Corsa crashed with a van carrying a group of workers, which left Ms Parisi's car with a punctured tyre. Viviana's lifeless body was found on August 8 in a woodland close to Caronia, not far from her abandoned car.

According to Mirror UK, she had a broken arm and animal bites.

Her son's body was later found 16 days after he vanished with her. Gioele's corpse had reportedly been decomposed so much his head was almost a skull when they found it 182 yards from the Messina to Palermo road where his mum had been involved in the crash.

Italian police suspect his body parts, found 300 yards from his mum's body, were moved by wild animals.

Local reports said Ms. Parisi suffered a psychological breakdown prior to her death due to the coronavirus lockdown.

Investigators are probing whether Gioele Mondello and his mom whose body was so "unrecognizable" she had to be identified by her wedding ring, were killed in a murder-suicide, attacked, or suffered a terrible accident.

Angelo Cavallo, the chief prosecutor of Patti, said: "We will continue to work and we will get to the bottom of this sad story."

Bashir El-rufai To NBA: Redirect Your Useless Invitation To Wike, Fayose
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Edoman - 08-21-2020, 03:16 PM - No Replies

Quote:Bashir El-rufai, son of Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-rufai, has told the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to re-direct its invitation for the 2020 Annual General Conference to opposition politicians.

The body of legal practitioners in the country had invited the Kaduna helmsman to the event as a speaker but the invitation was greeted with criticism, mostly from Nigerians on social media. A petition seeking his disengagement was also forwarded to the association.

The development forced the NBA to withdraw the invitation extended to the governor who then described it as unfair.

“For an association, whose bread and butter is about justice to make a ruling based on the stridency of people who lampoon judicial processes against certain individuals without hearing the other side is odd,” the governor, through his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Muyiwa Adekeye, said in a Thursday statement.

“It bears noting that in its response to pressure, the NBA leadership has signaled an unfortunate embrace of injustice, unfairness, absence of fair hearing and total disregard for the rule of law.

“The defamatory statements in the petition is another matter entirely, and they will get the appropriate response,” he added.

On his part, the governor’s son, described the invitation which his father would have honored as useless.

In a Friday tweet, the young lad advised that it be re-directed to Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers State and Ayodele Fayose, former governor of Ekiti State.

“These guys should re-direct their useless invitation to Nyesom Wike or Ayodele Fayose. The true respecters of Rule of Law & decorum. Make the conference have a uniform theme of speakers,” he said in the morning tweet.

Amitolu Shittu: Lawmakers, Ex-governors Behind Illegal Mining In Osun
User Avatar Forum: News

Quote:Director General of Osun State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun, Comrade Amitolu Shittu, has said highly-placed persons are behind illegal mining in the state.

Shittu stated this in an interview with The Nation in Osogbo, the state capital.

The Amotekun chief said the political positions of the illegal mining masterminds had made it difficult for the government to prosecute them.

He threatened to reveal the names of the perpetrators, if anybody dared him.

Shittu added: “With the help of the ad hoc personnel, we arrested cannabis farmers in Esa-Oke and three armed robbers at Owena. We also arrested some ritualists and even destroyed illegal shrines in the state. Some kidnappers, who were hiding in our forest around Iwo, were chased away…

“We have arrested 26 Chinese nationals. All the arrests we have made, including those of Malians, Ghanaians and Nigeriens, are 36. We have handed over the suspects to the police.

“I commend the Federal Government and Governor Oyetola for their support for the outfit to arrest illegal miners. If they don’t support us, it would have been very difficult to arrest the 36 persons because the people behind illegal mining are powerful people in Nigeria: ministers, senators, former governors, big men in the society. They are behind illegal mining. I am not afraid to say this. Nigeria cannot be a better country if all of us are not interested in good attitudes and conducts.”

Chevron: NUPENG threatens nationwide strike over workers’ sack

Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has condemned “the recurring anti-labour posture” of Chevron Nigeria Limited and its service contractors.

The body accused Chevron of sacking 175 contract workers in YKISH lntegrated
Services, Delog Nigeria Ltd, EUROFLOW Services, and others because they joined the union.

Williams Akporeha, the President, and Olawale Afolabi, the Secretary, in a statement on Friday, said the union was disturbed and pained about the flagrant disrespect for labour laws.

“The employment of these workers were terminated via WhatApp messages into workers respective mobile telephone. lt was such an appalling, callous and very heart rendering approach to industrial relations practice at this age and time.

“We wish to emphasize that this lack of respect and sensitivity to Nigerian extant labour law, international conventions and global best practices is gradually becoming the stock in trade for Chevron Nigeria Limited and its contractors.

“There are several other lingering issues against hapless workers yet to be addressed by Chevron and its contractors even after several regulatory institutions like Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Department of Petroleum Resources and NAPIMS severally ruled on the matters,” it said.

NUPENG listed the pending issues as “illegal deduction of workers’ benefits in since 2012 and flagrant refusal to refund the terminated workers”;

Discrimination against contract workers “as evident by the refusal Chevron Management to pay quarantine allowances to contract workers as it was done for all permanent workers”;

Alleged incitement of host communities against NUPENG members in locations of operations;
Alleged connivance with Pyrammidt Nigeria Limited to deny recognition to workers right to belong to an industrial union; and refusal to pay for the 2O18 annual vacation.

NUPENG urged the Nigerian government, relevant agencies and the United States of America to call Chveron and its contractors to order.

It requested that the sacked workers be recalled immediately, status quo maintained, while Chevron and its contractors properly engage NUPENG on all contentious matters.

“In the interest of peace and harmony, our demands must be met within seven days, otherwise we may be forced to call out all our members on a nationwide industrial action”, the statement warned.

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria IMN, otherwise known as Shiites, has commended the National Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, for withdrawing its invitation to Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State to speak at the association’s annual general conference coming up later this month.
IMN’s position was contained in a letter written to the Bar Association and signed by the President of the Movement’s Media Forum, Ibrahim Musa, and made available to DAILY POST on Friday.

The NBA had withdrawn its invitation to the governor to speak at its annual conference following an avalanche of criticisms, protests and even threats of boycott from lawyers and others.

The letter of commendation by the Islamic Movement partly reads:

“The Islamic Movement noted that Governor El-Rufai is the most unsuitable person to talk to a body of learned men considering his legendary disrespect for the rule of law, blatant abuses of fundamental rights and intolerance to opposing views.

“El-Rufai has been an agent of impunity and division who supports extra-judicial killings and building of mass graves.

“He, in collaboration with officers of the Nigerian army, attacked members of the Islamic Movement, without recourse to law, leading to the gruesome extrajudicial murder of at least 347 members of the Movement (by the government’s own admission) in December 2015 and hurriedly buried them in mass graves.

“Despite the open confession by the Secretary to the Kaduna State Government, Alhaji Lawal Balarabe Abbas before a Judicial Commission of Inquiry, governor el-Rufai has refused to prosecute the criminal elements who perpetrated these crimes, but rather paradoxically filed charges of conspiracy and culpable homicide against over 250 members of the IMN at Kaduna state high courts.

“Although the Kaduna high courts have since discharged and acquitted all of them, governor el-Rufai has continued to seek further ways to subjugate and persecute members and leadership of the Movement in contravention of his oath of office to ‘do right to all manners of people according to law, without fear or favour, affection or ill-will…’

“Certainly, such a person must not be promoted or allowed to address an Association of learned men, whose motto is “Promoting the Rule of Law.” We therefore salute your unique courage to stand firmly on the path of what you profess to promote and stamp out – impunity and gross abuse of human rights in our beloved country, which loudly proclaims to operate under the rule of law.”

Economy to shrink by 5.2% in 2020, says NESG
August 21, 2020

The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) has said the economy will shrink by 5.2 percent this year.

It called for effective implementation of palliative measures designed to mitigate the effects of COVID-19 on the economy.

The NESG board of directors reviewed the global and domestic economic, financial, and social environments for the half-year (January-June) 2020 as well as the outlook for the rest of the year.

Board chairman, Asue Ighodalo, said in a statement: “The Board notes the expectation, based on the International Monetary Fund’s projection, that the Nigerian economy will shrink by 5.2 percent in 2020.”

The Board noted that economic growth slowed to 1.9 percent year-on-year in H1 2020 (half year), representing its weakest level since Q2’2018.

It said 29 percent of the economy contracted, compared to 13 percent in the same period a year ago.

NESG said: “A review of performance by the various economic sectors showed that the top contributors to economic growth in H1’2020 are: telecoms (52.5 percent), financial institutions (34.9 percent), crude petroleum & gas (24.9 percent) and crop production (24.4 percent).

“The Board also notes the positive inference to be drawn from more recent data showing growth in Value Added Tax (VAT) collection and Federation Account (FAAC) receipts.”

NESG noted the country’s very high debt service-to-revenue ratio.

It said: “While this ratio has improved to 72 percent in May 2020 from 99 percent recorded at the end of March 2020, it remains unsustainably high and undermines the ability of government to meet non-debt obligations…

“As it acknowledges the Federal Government’s drive to improve revenue performance at all levels of the public sector, the Board advices that this drive should be done in such manner that the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on businesses (large and small, and households) isn’t worsened.

“Furthermore, attention must be paid to the efficiency and effectiveness of government spending.

“There is also a need to intensify efforts at providing an enabling environment and attracting investment (domestic and international) needed to stimulate output growth and ultimately revenue.”

NESG said Nigeria continues to deal with the impact of COVID-19 pandemic.

“To alleviate the burden imposed by this pandemic on Nigerians, all tiers of government must ensure that the various palliative measures announced are effectively implemented to reach the people for whom they are intended speedily and efficiently,” it said.

Jigawa chapter of NBA threatens to boycott association's AGM if the decision to withdraw El-Rufai’s invitation is not reversed

The Jigawa state chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has threatened to boycott the 2020 Annual General Meeting of the bar if the decision to withdraw the invitation of Kaduna state governor, Nasir el-Rufai, is not reversed.

The NBA on Thursday, August 20, announced the withdrawal of Governor el-Rufai's invitation, following a protest by some lawyers who argued that the governor is well known for 'human rights abuse,' therefore shouldn't be invited to their meeting.

In a statement released, the chairman of NBA in Jigawa state, Abubakar Garba, argued that the governor has not been given a fair hearing to defend himself of the allegations of human rights abuses some members of the profession leveled against him. The state chapter argue that if Governor Nyesom Wike who has been accused of human rights abuse can be invited, then they see no reason why Governor el-Rufai should be denied an invitation.

El-Rufai lacks moral rights to address lawyers – Falana writes NBA

Femi Falana, popular activist lawyer, has said that Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State lacks the moral right to speak at the 60th Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, conference.

Falana said El-Rufai has a penchant of disobeying court orders right from when he was a Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

He explained that El-Rufai’s action was inconsistent with the rules of NBA.

The activist lawyer stated this in a letter to the NBA’s Technical Committee, conference planning committee.

Galena’s letter reads partly: “You will agree with us that Mallam El-Rufai’s penchant for disobeying court orders is inconsistent with the aims and objects of the Nigerian Bar Association which includes promotion of rule of law.”

El-Rufai was billed to be one of the speakers at the NBA Conference scheduled for August 26 – 29, 2020.

However, his inclusion led to outrage and backlash, even on social media.
Nigerians and lawyers cited his comments on Southern Kaduna killings, alleged disdain for court orders, among others.

Following the condemnation from Nigerians, NBA had bowed to pressure and withdrew El-Rufai’s invitation.

CAMA biggest threat against Christianity, gate of hell won’t prevail – Fani-Kayode blasts Buhari govt

Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Minister of Aviation has described the Company and Allied Matters Act, CAMA, recently signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari as the greatest threat to Christianity.
Fani-Kayode, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, however, said nothing can bring down the church.

Recall that the World Council of Bishops had emphatically described CAMA laws on churches, religious bodies by Nigeria’s Federal Government as an illegality.

President Buhari signed the CAMA act which has generated a lot of controversies, into law earlier this month.

The Christians Association of Nigeria (CAN), had also described it as satanic, demanding that the President halt the implementation of “the obnoxious and ungodly law until the religious institutions are exempted from it.”

Also the founder and General Overseer of the Living Faith Church, also known as Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, was one of the first religious leaders to warn the President Buhari government against the application of CAMA in churches.

Adding his voice, Fani-Kayode tweeted, “Though the legislation known as CAMA represents the greatest threat to Christendom in our history, those behind it fail to appreciate that the gates of hell SHALL NOT prevail against the Church. No matter what they do, Jesus remains Lord and the gospel shall continue to flourish.”

Two Lebanese who attempted to smuggle $890,000 out of Nigeria jailed for money laundering

Quote:Two Lebanese nationals who were found with the sum of $890,000 which they wanted to smuggle out of Nigeria through the Port Harcourt International Airport, Rivers State, were on Thursday jailed two years each for money laundering.

The two men, Chamseddine Waell Mohammed and Dina Jihad Khali, were sentenced by Justice M.I. Sani of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt after they pleaded guilty of the money laundering charges brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
According to the anti-graft commission, the offences committed by them ran contrary to Section 2 (3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 (as amended) and punishable under Section 2 (5) of the same Act.

The EFCC in a statement on Thursday said one of the charges against them is:

“That you Chamseddine Waell Mohammed on the 1st August, 2020 at Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Port Harcourt, within the jurisdiction of this court did fail to make a declaration of the sum of $220,000.

“The money was hidden in your luggage on board a chartered flight with registration number 9HVFF to Lebanon and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 2 (3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 (as Amended) and punishable under section 2 (5) of the same Act.”

The charge against the second convict read: “That you Dina Jihad Khali on the 1st August, 2020 at Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Port Harcourt within the jurisdiction of this court did fail to make a declaration to the Nigeria Custom Service as required by law cash transportation of the sum of $670,000.

According to the statement, while reviewing facts of the case, prosecuting counsel, Aso Larrys Peters tendered some documents, which included Letter of Invitation from Customs and statements of the defendants, as exhibits.

“Principal Detective Superintendent Macaulay Olayinka while being led in evidence by prosecution counsel, told the court that the two convicts were arrested for attempting to smuggle a total sum of $890,000 out of Nigeria, through the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.

He further disclosed that the money recovered from the suspects had been deposited with the Central Bank of Nigeria, Rivers State Branch, for safe keeping by the arresting agency.

In view of the reviewed facts, the prosecution prayed the court to convict and sentence the defendants as charged.

Justice Sani consequently convicted and sentenced the defendants to two years imprisonment. The undeclared amount was ordered forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Nigeria Spends N120bn Annually To Keep Refineries Idle ― Petroleum Engineers
User Avatar Forum: Oil/Gas
Posted by: Edoman - 08-21-2020, 10:32 AM - No Replies

Quote:Society of Petroleum Engineers, SPE, Nigeria Council has lamented the huge amount of money the country spent to keep its non-performing refineries.

Speaking ahead of SPE Nigeria Energy Industry Transformation Summit bid to run from 25 to 27th August, the Council Chairman, Mr Joe Nwakwue said that on annual basis, the country refineries gulp nothing less than N120 billion.

“We understand that refinery is a key national asset and it is in the national interest that they are optimally run from commercial perspective and we think private sector are in better position to do that than public sector.

“It’s important to recognized that it serve no purpose that we have refineries that are sitting idle across the country. They don’t just seat idle; we still spend money to keep them idle.

“If you look at the annual report of NNPC, you will see clearly about N120 billion operating loss for these facilities and its consistency over the years. If we keep them next year, that is how much loss we are going to incurred as a nation.

“It’s not in our national interest to continue to pump money into things that are not adding value. From that perspective, it’s only reasonable to say that we should have sold this asset long time ago to those who can run it.

“Am very sure that assuming we take that step; our exchange rate won’t be what it is today. Assuming we sold it 10 years ago, today we might have exit import completely.

Speaking on the upcoming event, Nwakwue said that the 3-day online summit tagged; “Changing global energy landscape: strategies for industry sustainability will offer the country and key stakeholders directions to remain relevant in a changing world.

“We are going to have three plenary sessions on the first day we are going to be discussing “economic development and environmental stewardship; opportunities for the energy industry” and on the secondary, “domestic refining for sustainable development” and on the last day, we will discuss “global energy transition: remaining relevant in a changing world.”

“The panellists were carefully selected and composed of highly experienced industry thought leaders and practitioners who have demonstrable competences in these areas.

“SPE is indeed blessed that they accepted to come and share their perspectives on these issues and we are grateful for their support and commitment and look forward to exciting and highly productive sessions.”

Nigerians Abroad Protest Against Kaduna Killings, Task U.S., Others On Cessation

Posted by: Edoman - 08-21-2020, 10:31 AM - No Replies

Nigerians abroad have protested against the killings in Kaduna, imploring the international community to prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari to halt the bloodletting.

Organised by the Southern Kaduna People in Diaspora (SOKAPDA) Europe and numbering about 25, the protesters converged on one of United Kingdom’s most famous landmarks – Trafalgar Square – as early as 8a.m. yesterday, before proceeding to the Nigerian High Commission in nearby Northumberland Avenue, with the cheerleaders chanting “what do we want?” and others responding with “justice.”

The march then went into full swing at the embassy, where they chanted, “Southern Kaduna can’t breathe”, “Southern Kaduna lives matter”, “Stop the killings” and “Stop the genocide.”

As the numbers increased, the protesters kept shouting, “Buhari wake up, Nigeria does not belong to one tribe, Nigeria does not belong to Fulani”, “We say no to Jihad, we say no to Sharia law, stop El-Rufai.”

There were also tunes of “Fulani jihadists are killing us”, “Buhari wake up, we have the right to choose our faith, and we have chosen to be Christians”.

They accused the federal and state governments of failing the people, stating that over 2000 people had allegedly been murdered by the marauders.

SOKAPDA president, Rita Allahmagani, told The Guardian that the march was to bring to the attention of the international community that “what is happening in Southern Kaduna is not a conflict, but a genocide.”

Asked what they wanted the world powers to do, she stated: “Let them rise up to their responsibility and help. We want the United Kingdom, United States and France to come in and prevail on the government to end the killings.”

They later handed a letter to an official of the commission, who assured them that their message would be relayed to the President by the envoy.

FG reciprocates, bans EU flights from entering Nigeria

The Federal government says it would be also be banning flights from the European nations just as they have banned flights from Nigeria into their country.

As part of measures to contain the spread of the Coronavirus in its region, the European Union in June this year released a statement listing some countries that are banned from flying into any of the countries in the region, and Nigeria was included.

At the daily briefing of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 on Thursday, August 20, the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, announced that the Federal government will be reciprocating the EU's decision. Airlines from the European Union would not be allowed to fly into Nigeria once the International flights resume operations in Nigeria on Saturday, August 29.

The minister, who was represented by the Director-General, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Capt. Musa Nuhu, argued that the decision was taken in the interest of Nigerians.

Quote:“On the list of countries (that are banned), we are working on the comprehensive list, but the main one that came up is when the EU opened their borders effective 1st July, Nigeria was among the list of 54 countries that were not allowed to enter the EU.

To my understanding, as the situation changes, they are going to look at the list and change it. But so far, we don’t have any contrary information to that first one that Nigeria is banned from going to the EU. So, as we open our airspace, we are going to apply the issue of reciprocity to those (EU) countries.” he said

The Minister announced that as International flights resume operations, inbound international passengers would be limited to 1,280.

Governor El-Rufai reacts to NBA's decision to withdraw his invitation to their annual general meeting

Kaduna state governor, Nasir el-Rufai, has reacted to the decision of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), to withdraw an invitation previously extended to him to speak at its annual general meeting.

NBA withdrew the invitation following an outcry by some lawyers who said the governor stands against what the profession represents.

In a statement released on Thursday August 20, by his spokesperson, Muyiwa Adekeye, Governor el-Rufai described the withdrawal of his invitation as an unfortunate embrace of injustice. He said he will continue to make his voice heard on the things the country needs to do to make progress.

His statement in part reads

Quote:“While the decision about who speaks at its event is clearly the NBA’s, Malam El-Rufai wishes to make clear that he did not seek the platform and is not agitated that he has one less speaking engagement,” the statement read.

However, the circumstances of the last few days warrant some comments. That a professional organisation has elected to endorse a one-sided narrative on a profound national issue is something that its members may wish to reflect upon.

For an association, whose bread and butter is about justice, to make a ruling based on the stridency of people who lampoon judicial processes against certain individuals without hearing the other side is odd.

It bears noting that in its response to pressure, the NBA leadership has signalled an unfortunate embrace of injustice, unfairness, absence of fair hearing and total disregard for the rule of law.”

60-year-old fake doctor treating Coronavirus patients arrested

A 60-year-old fake doctor identified as Charles George has been arrested for treating COVID-19 patients.

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria who confirmed the suspect's arrest on Thursday August 20, said he was apprehended at his one-room apartment at Block 1, Julius Berger Junior Staff Quarters popularly known as Berger Camp in Kubwa, by police detectives from the office of the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory.

Syringe (for abortion) and kidney dish among others were recovered from the fake doctor who was accused of subjecting his clients to unprofessional medical treatment which “may lead to sudden and unnatural death.”

The police presented a fake letterhead and COVID-19 cure threat SMS which the suspect was allegedly blackmailing his clients with, said in its statement;

Quote:"George has been vetted as a regular customer of the FCDA Police Station and Kubwa Area Command Headquarters for several matters in connection with mixed medicine and extortion of his clients since 2016.”

The Deputy Registrar and Head of the Inspectorate Department of the MDCN, Dr. Victor Gbenro on his own part said;

Quote:“The arrest of the suspected fake medical/alternative medicine practitioner, by name Dr. Charles George, at his Kubwa premises is a major breakthrough for the MDCN under the leadership of the Registrar, Dr. Tajudeen Sanusi.

“Acting on an intelligence report from the IG intelligence team, the Inspectorate Department of the MDCN as directed by the registrar effected the successful arrest of the fake doctor, who has been defrauding unsuspecting members of the public and posing as a member of the NCDC COVID-19 team.

“The suspect is alleged to have been practising alternative medicine without registration or licence from the MDCN, which is statutorily mandated to regulate the practice of medical, dental and alternative medicine in Nigeria.

“Investigation revealed that his practice is not known or registered by the FCDA Private Health Facility Registration Agency. The police have commenced further investigation and prosecution of the suspect. This is one among the several efforts of the council at sanitising the medical profession in the country.”

Donald Wokoma Collected N250m Without Executing Contracts, EFCC Investigator

Osinbajo’s aide collected N250m without executing contracts, EFCC investigator tells Salami Panel

Quote:After receiving N250 million, Dr. Donald Wokoma, a Special Assistant to the Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, allegedly failed to execute some contracts awarded to his firms in 2018.

The Economic Confidential gathered that Mr Wokoma was a signatory to the bank accounts of the companies when he was Special Assistant to the Vice President on the National Economic Council, NEC.

A seasoned investigator at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) exposed the deal while testifying before the Justice Isa Ayo Salami Presidential Investigative Panel on Thursday.

The Justice Ayo Salami panel is a Presidential Investigative Committee examining activities of EFCC under the stewardship of suspended Acting Chairman of the agency Ibrahim Magu between 2015 and 2020.

The anti-corruption operative, whose name is withheld for security reason, alleged that several contracts were awarded without execution and payments were made to companies under the Presidential Amnesty Programme.

The officer said the case was assigned to Special Investigation Team sitting in the Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA, after an intelligence report was received on the ‘fraud’ which was one of the fraudulent activities at the Office of the Presidential Amnesty Programme in 2018.

But upon investigation, it was revealed that Damijay Integrated Services was awarded a contract worth about N98million, and a similar contract was awarded to another company named Eagle Technology Ltd, at the same amount of N98m.

“It was further revealed that after the payment, Eagle Tech transferred the money paid to it to Damijay. The total sum of N250m was then transferred from Damijay to Elixir Investments Partners as Investment.

“In the course of the investigation, it was discovered that Donald Wokoma, an SA to the Vice President, was the sole signatory to the account of Damijay and he, his wife and son were the shareholders of the company,” the operative disclosed.

He then added that: “Wokoma was invited to the Commission and after his initial statement was recorded, the Chairman was briefed and he requested for a written brief on the involvement of Wokoma and that he needed to inform the Vice President.

“He left for the Villa to the VP’s office and up until about 11 pm there was no communication from him.”

The EFCC investigator told the panel that Mr Wokoma was detained and subsequently released on the instructions of the Chairman.

According to him, Mr Wokoma’s regular and Diplomatic Passports were retained but were later released on the directives of the chairman.

He said: “In the course of the investigation, it was discovered that the contracts awarded to Damijay and Eagle Tech were never executed and the receipts provided by Wokoma as proof of purchase of items were found to be false as the said trader whom was claimed to have sold the items was traced in Portharcourt and he stated he never sold the said items.

“The 250m invested by Wokoma and traced to Elixir Invest was then placed on HOLD. Wokoma subsequently, instituted a civil suit for the hold placed on his fund to be lifted and the court-ordered sometime in November 2018 that in the absence of a court order, the hold should be lifted.

“However, in same November 2018, the Commission was granted a freezing order by the court on the funds which nullified the initial order.”

The operative who is said to be one of the incorruptible investigators EFCC can boast of added that the investigation of the entire case was concluded and four separate charges were proffered against the following Brig. Gen. Boroh (rtd) and Hanafi Moriki; Sgt. Joshua Ebemeiyefa; Donald Wokoma & his company Damijay; together with Paul Ofana Santus and his companies.

According to the EFCC personnel, the four charges were then taken to the chairman. After perusal, the chairman directed that the name of Donald Wokoma be removed from the charge, and only his company be charged, while all other charges be filed as well.

“Shortly after, some of the officers investigating the case were transferred for being stumbling blocks of the soft landing intended to be given to Donald Wokoma.

“It was later gathered that the Chairman directed that no one should look for Donald or any of his family members since it was only Damijay that was charged.”

The officer added: “Subsequently, Donald Wokoma’s lawyer, Bar Victor Giwa wrote through the Attorney General’s Office for the lifting of the restriction of the funds and upon being served with the letter, the Chairman directed that Donald Wokoma’s name be returned to the charge.

“The Charge was subsequently amended and served on Donald Wokoma. Bar Giwa also wrote directly to the Chairman requesting again for the restriction on the funds to be lifted. The arraignment of Donald Wokoma is, however, pending as the matter is slated for sometimes in September 2020.”

₦5 Million Hate Speech Fine: Nigerians Are Too Docile - Femi Okurounmu
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Edoman - 08-21-2020, 08:40 AM - No Replies

Quote:Senator Femi Okurounmu, former Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee on the 2014 National Conference on Thursday the Muhammadu Buhari administration is fast moving towards dictatorship by raising the fine for hate speech from N500,000 to N5m.

Speaking in an interview with Daily Independent, the Afenifere chieftain who also described Nigerians as docile people said the action would have led to massive protests in other countries of the world.

According to Okurounmu, the action of the Federal government is a calculated attempt at barring critics of the government from expressing their views.

The current administration is a confused lot. They are moving towards absolute dictatorship”.

“Who determines what is hate speech? So, anything that is critical of their government, they term it as hate speech”.
“Even when something is true but it is pointing out their inadequacies, they call it hate speech”.

If we say they are allowing the killing of innocent Nigerians, they label it as hate speech and impose fines. These are tentative steps towards a complete dictatorial regime”.

“Unfortunately our society does not believe in protests. This is enough to get everybody out on the streets, protesting against them”.

“But because we so docile in Nigeria, everybody just complains and keep quiet. That is why they are getting away with murder”.

PDP To Oppose Any Postponement Of Edo, Ondo Polls

Quote:The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it will oppose any postponement of Edo and Ondo State governorship elections.

The PDP National Chairman, Mr Uche Secondus at a news conference in Abuja, said the September 19 scheduled for Edo and October 10 for Ondo governorship elections should be sacrosanct.

Secondus called for appropriate sanction of the individuals involved in anti-democratic act in Edo, adding that they should be given visa restrictions to any democratic countries.

“We call on both the INEC and the judiciary to stand firm in defence of democracy and not yield to manipulative tendencies.

“We wish to also draw the attention of the international community to this gross abuse of planning to undermine the democratic process by critical staff who should defend it.

“The interest and will of the people of Edo should be paramount in all decisions and that should guide any action either by the INEC or the government.

Nigerians should declare anybody or group working to truncate the ongoing electoral processes for Edo and Ondo State as enemies of democracy who want to inject crisis in the two states by undermining the will of the people,” he said.

Secondus expressed concerns about what he called threat to the nation’s democracy which according to him was becoming more and more real by the day.

He said that PDP had watched with utmost concern, the developing situation in Edo as well with growing desperation of certain individuals and party to capture Edo in the election at all cost.

16-year-old girl is 'gang-raped by 30 men' in an Israel hotel as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu describes the attack as a 'crime against humanity'

A 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by 30 men in the coastal resort of Eilat in Israel.

According to the Times of Israel, the girl went to Police last Friday, August 14, to report that she was repeatedly assaulted while she was drunk in a hotel room.

Police say they have arrested two men so far and one of the suspects told investigators that a large group of men had sex with the girl but claimed that it was consensual.

Some of the men are alleged to have filmed the attacks on their phones, according to Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

The first suspect was reportedly arrested after Police discovered there was video footage of the alleged rape.

Police say the alleged victim was not a guest at the hotel but had only gone there to drink with some of her friends. But when the girl went to the bathroom, she was allegedly taken to one of the hotel rooms and raped by the group of men, who all didn't know each other.

The report said one suspect claimed that the men 'lined up' outside the room before going inside to assault her.

Israeli television reported that another alleged attackers entered the room under the pretence of being a medic who wanted to help. But he 'took advantage of her and slept with her when she was out of control.'

Authorities are now awaiting the results of a medical examination, with two suspects, both 27, already in Police custody.

Reacting to the rape allegations, prime minister Netanyahu said on Twitter that 'this is shocking, there is no other word'.

'This is not just a crime against the girl, it is a crime against humanity itself that deserves all condemnation and that those responsible for it should be brought to justice,' Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu's coalition partner and defence minister Benny Gantz asked: 'What is a man who is standing on a crowded line with dozens of others, on the way to a room where a young, disoriented girl is lying down, trying to prove?

'The police investigation is still underway, but it's important that I convey a message to those who participated or bore witness to this case or others: The only thing you've proven is what depravity of your soul and morality you are capable of.'

President Buhari Calls For Immediate Release Of Malian President Keita by Gondonu:

Quote:President Muhammadu Buhari has called for the immediate release of Malian president, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and a return to constitutional order in the West African nation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHuHbySYYoQ

A statement by the State House said Buhari made the call on Thursday during a virtual meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

“President Keita and other detainees should be released unconditionally and with immediate effect,” the Nigerian leader said.

He assured that Nigeria is in support of “the efforts of President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger, for wider regional and continental consultations, especially on the possibility of detaching ECOWAS and AU troops with the UN Mission in Mali, to protect State Institutions and also act as the first layer of defence in the country to help preserve and protect lives and property.”

According to the Nigerian leader, the removal of the Malian President could have “devastating consequences” for the country and the West African sub-region.Today, Mali has not only descended into political chaos but also socio-economic and security disaster with potentially tragic consequences to Mali and the sub-region,” he explained.

While commending the African Union, the UN and other international bodies for condemning the coup in Mali, he called on them to work with ECOWAS in the restoration of peace to the country.

“ECOWAS, the AU, and the UN should not stand by, while the situation deteriorates,” he said. Thus far, their strong statements of condemnation are sincerely appreciated and I urge them to continue to walk this route together with us until sanity returns to Mali with the restoration of Civil Administration.”

Other resolutions reached during the Summit include the following: firmness on the restoration of Constitutional order; release of President Keita and all those arrested; stoppage of economic relations with Mali, with exceptions granted to staple foods, fuel and medication, for the sake of the people; continued engagement with all parties to the crisis, while the Special Envoy appointed to mediate, former President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, along with Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, President of ECOWAS Commission, are to visit Mali to convey the decisions of the West African leaders.

Seizing Power

Rebel troops on Tuesday seized President Keita and Prime Minister Boubou Cisse in a dramatic escalation. Malian army officer, Colonel Assimi Goita on Wednesday announced himself as the coup leader.

Avoiding ‘Bloodshed’

Kaita said on Wednesday he had stepped down to avoid “bloodshed” after he was detained in a military coup, whose leaders pledged new elections.

The African Union (AU) also on Wednesday suspended Mali with the US and European Union, joining to condemn the coup and demanded the release of the detained leaders.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

FRIDAY 21ST AUGUST.

THE “LITTLE CLOUD” MEANS SOMETHING

And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not (1 Kings 18:44).

Oftentimes, many are too worried and overwhelmed by their problems and the circumstances of their lives to notice the blessings of God around them. The answer or miracle they need may already be in the little signs or details around them which they’re not discerning enough to observe.

But notice something different about the Prophet Elijah in our opening verse: After three and a half years of drought, he began praying to God for the heavens to open and bring forth rain. As he prayed, he sent out his servant several times to check if the rains were coming. Each time, the young man returned with a negative report, saying, “No, master, there’s no sign of rain outside."

At the seventh time, however, he came back saying, “I’m not sure if it counts for anything, but I see a ‘little cloud’ in the sky, the size of a man’s hand."

At this point, Elijah sprang to his feet and said, “Yes, that’s it!” and immediately sent a message to King Ahab: “Quick, get into your carriage and head for the city before the rain stops you!”

Elijah’s servant only reported that he saw a little cloud, but that was all Elijah needed; he knew he had made progress. He was able to observe something different in the present state of affairs. Can you observe something different in your life today? Like Elijah, choose to see that “sign” of change as an indication that you already have the victory.

Don’t wait; immediately affirm, and keep affirming that you’re victorious in Christ. Keep declaring your victory, confident that God’s Word and His life in you has made you whole and brought perfection to your physical body, your life and circumstances.

Recognize the work of God in and around you and give Him glory. Refuse to allow your mind to be clogged with worries so you can hear God’s voice and discern His presence, beauty and signs. Like Elijah, see that you’ve made, and are making progress and impact through the subtle signs in your everyday life.

PRAYER

Dear Father, my spiritual eyes are open to recognize your wondrous works, see your glory, revel in your beauty, discern your presence and the visible and invisible signs you display even in the minutest details for my attention. With this consciousness, I walk in victory and triumph in every situation and circumstance, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Kyari, Funtua & Now Maida… Buhari’s Inner Circle Hit By The Grim Reaper - Cable
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-20-2020, 10:46 PM - No Replies

Quote:On Wednesday, when the social media went awash with that news that Mamman Daura, a nephew of President Muhammadu Buhari, had been flown abroad for emergency medical treatment, there was a feeling of “not again” in the president’s camp.

It has now been clarified in a report by TheCable that Daura, son of Buhari’s elder brother, is not ill as reported but on a routine medical check-up in the UK.

Nonetheless, the president has lost key friends and associates in recent times that tongues are bound to wag on the depleting ranks of his inner circle.

Wada Maida, who died on Monday, was a quiet but influential figure in the Buhari camp who died a few weeks after Ismiala Isa Funtua, an in-law to the president.

The death of Abba Kyari, his chief of staff, is apparently the most devastating to the president partly because of the key role of co-ordination that he played in government.

TheCable chronicles the deaths.

ABBA KYARI: THE ENFORCER

Abba Kyari was the first person within the president’s inner circle to die in recent times, and his death shook Nigeria for several reasons: he was the chief of staff to the president; he died of COVID-19, the first prominent Nigerian to succumb to the disease; and he was a member of “the cabal” and was even seen by some as Nigeria’s de-facto president.

Kyari died on April 17 after battling coronavirus for about a month. He had tested positive for the virus after he returned from Germany where he led a government delegation to meet with officials of Siemens to finalise deals relating to the Nigerian power sector. In his tribute, Buhari described Kyari as “very best of us” and “my dearest friend”.

ISA FUNTUA: THE IN-LAW

The president was still mourning Kyari when Isa Funtua, another of his close allies, passed on. Funtua, who died on July 20, was another strong member of “the cabal,” and Buhari’s friend for many years. Like Buhari, he is from Katsina state while one of his sons is married to one of the president’s daughters.

Publisher of the defunct Democrat Newspaper and former president of the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), Funtua believed he is not just a member of the cabal, rather, “I’m cabal myself.” While condoling with Funtua’s family, Buhari said his late friend’s death “created a huge gap as Malam Funtua consistently stood by him in his political journey.”

WADA MAIDA: THE ‘SILENT’ ASSOCIATE

The latest of Buhari’s associates who passed recently was Wada Maida, who died suddenly after he slumped in his living room in Abuja, on August 17. He was a former spokesman of the president who served him as chief press secretary about 40 years ago when Buhari was the military head of state between 1983 and 1985.

Ever since then, he has remained in the president’s good books and was in 2017, appointed as chairman of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) board of directors. In his tribute to Maida, the president described the late media icon as “a very dedicated, hardworking and loyal professional for whom I have the deepest respect and admiration”.

Rivers court jails two Lebanese for money laundering

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Port Harcourt zonal office on Thursday, August 20, secured the conviction of two Lebanese men, Chamseddine Waell Mohammed and Dina Jihad Khali, who both pleaded guilty to separate one-count charge of money laundering preferred against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

A statement released by the antigraft agency says the offenses run contrary to Section 2 (3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 (as amended) and punishable under Section 2 (5) of the same Act.

Both defendants were sentenced to two years imprisonment by Justice I. M. Sani of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The first charge read:

Quote:
“That you Chamseddine Waell Mohammed on the 1st July, 2020 at Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Port Harcourt within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did fail to make a declaration of the sum of $220,000.00 (Two Hundred and Twenty Thousand US Dollars) hid in your Luggage on board a chartered flight with registration number 9HVFF to Lebanon and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 2 (3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 (as Amended) and punishable under section 2 (5) of the same Act”.
The second charge read:
Quote:
“That you Dina Jihad Khali on the 1st July, 2020 at Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Port Harcourt within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did fail to make a declaration to the Nigeria Custom Service as required by law cash transportation of the sum of $670,000.00 (Six Hundred and Seventy Thousand US Dollars) hid in your Luggage on board a chartered flight with registration number 9HVFF to Lebanon and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 2 (3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 (as Amended) and punishable under Section 2 (5) of the same Act”.
The defendants pleaded guilty to the charges.

While reviewing facts of the case, prosecuting counsel, Aso Larrys Peters tendered some documents, which included Letter of Invitation from Customs and statements of the defendants, as exhibits.

Principal Detective Superintendent Macaulay Olayinka while being led in evidence by prosecution counsel, told the court that, the two convicts were arrested for attempting to smuggle a total sum of $890,000 USD( Eight Hundred and Ninety Thousand United States US Dollars) out of Nigeria, through the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.
Quote:“The said amount was found inside their Luggage on board a chartered flight with registration number 9HVFF to Lebanon.
“They were apprehended by the Nigeria Custom Service, Area One Command, Port Harcourt and handed over to the Port Harcourt Zonal office of the EFCC on August 12, 2020 for further investigation.
“The Convicts, Khali with Passport Number LR152975 (Republic of Lebanon) was arrested with $670,000USD (Six Hundred and Seventy Thousand Dollars ) while Mohammed with Passport Number LR0356598 (Republic of Lebanon) had in his possession the sum of $220,000USD (Two Hundred and Twenty Thousand Dollars)”, he said.
He further disclosed that the money recovered from the suspects had been deposited with the Central Bank of Nigeria, Rivers State Branch, for safe keeping by the arresting agency.

In view of the reviewed facts, the prosecution prayed the court to convict and sentence the defendants as charged. However, counsel to the defendants, Paul Ejiga urged the court to temper justice with mercy as the defendants were first time offenders who have no previous criminal record.

Justice Sani consequently convicted and sentenced the defendants to two years imprisonment with an option of fine of One Million Naira each. The undeclared amount was ordered forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria

Iran Seizes UAE Ship For Violating Its Waters & Killing Two Fishermen
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-20-2020, 08:48 PM - No Replies

Quote:The incident occurred the same day the UAE coastguard killed two Iranian fishermen.

Iran on Thursday said it seized a United Arab Emirates-registered ship violating its territorial waters this week after the UAE coastguard killed two Iranian fishermen on the same day.

The foreign ministry said the boat was seized on Monday after UAE coastguard vessels "opened fire on several Iranian fishing boats ... leading to the deaths of two fishermen".

"On Monday, an Emirati ship was seized by the border guards of Iran and its crew were detained due to illegal traffic in our country's waters," state-run TV quoted a ministry statement as saying.

"On the same day, UAE guards shot dead two Iranian fishermen and seized a boat ... The UAE has expressed regret for the incident and in a letter on Wednesday announced its readiness to pay compensation."

Iran summoned the UAE charge d'affaires in Tehran over the incident.

The UAE foreign ministry declined to comment when contacted by the Reuters news agency.

Although incidents regarding fishing boats are frequent between Iran and its Gulf Arab neighbours, Iran warned of "any aggression against its interests and citizens", saying in the statement: "Tehran will take all necessary measures to protect its vessels and citizens in the Persian Gulf."

'Big mistake'

UAE official news agency WAM reported on Monday the Gulf state's coastguard tried to stop eight fishing boats that violated its territorial waters northwest of Sir Bu Nu'Ayr island, without reporting any casualties.

The incident comes amid high tensions between the two countries following last week's surprise announcement that the UAE has agreed to normalise ties with Israel under a US-brokered deal.

Iran has condemned the agreement, with President Hassan Rouhani calling it a "big mistake" and warning "against opening the path of Israel to the region", without elaborating on what that would mean.

Rouhani's remarks were seen as "threats" by the UAE which on Sunday summoned the Iranian charge d'affaires in Abu Dhabi to protest "unacceptable and inflammatory" rhetoric.

The UAE, which downgraded its relations with Iran in 2016 amid fierce rivalry between Tehran and Emirati ally Saudi Arabia, said the remarks "had serious implications for security and stability in the Gulf region".

Establishing diplomatic ties between Israel and Washington's Middle East allies, including the oil-rich Gulf states, has been central to US President Donald Trump's regional strategy to contain Iran.

'We will go after them'

Anwar Gargash, the Emirati minister of state for foreign affairs, has repeatedly said the UAE's decision to open diplomatic ties with Israel had nothing to do with Iran.

However, the UAE's government long has considered Iran its top regional threat and recent tensions between Tehran and Washington have seen a series of incidents near it.

Deployed Patriot missile batteries visible from one major Dubai highway remain pointed north towards Iran.

Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who serves as the UAE's day-to-day ruler, long has warned Israel may strike first to destroy Iran's nuclear programme if it is not contained. That would start a regional war that would see Tehran target the Emirates, he has repeatedly told US officials.

"This is the Middle East and we will do what we need to do," Sheikh Mohammed was quoted as saying in a February 2009 US diplomatic cable published by WikiLeaks. "When the Iranians fire their missiles we will go after them and kill them."

Thursday's announcement by Tehran of the incident comes a day after Trump said the United States will activate a controversial mechanism aimed at reimposing UN sanctions on Iran.

The Nigerian Bar Association has withdrawn its invitation to Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai as one of the speakers in its forthcoming conference.

The announcement was made via the association's Twitter handle, days after some lawyers protested against the inclusion of the Kaduna state Governor in NBA's speakers' list.

Recall that a lawyer, Usani Odum spearheaded the online petition to stop the governor from attending the Annual General Conference and it has garnered over 3,000 signatures.

In a seperate letter titled ‘Request to Withdraw the Offer of Platform at the 2020 Annual General Conference of the NBA to Mallam Nasir el-Rufai’ and signed by Silas Onu and Auta Nyada, 10 allegations against el-Rufai and his son Bello were listed. The allegations bordered on his alleged poor human rights record and inability to stop the killings in the state he governs, particularly in southern Kaduna.

The tweet which confirmed withdrawal of the invitation to Governor El-Rufai read;

Quote:“The National Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association at its ongoing meeting resolves that the invitation to the Kaduna State Governor, H.E. Nasir El-Rufai by the 2020 Annual General Conference Planning committee be withdrawn and decision communicated to the Governor.”

Fight breaks out in aisle of an American Airlines flight as passengers argue over face masks

A fight broke out on an American Airline flight after passengers were asked to leave the flight because they weren't wearing face masks.

The video showing the wild commotion that unfolded during the flight from Las Vegas to Charlotte, North Carolina, was shared on Twitter by media personality, Caryn Ross after her husband filmed it.

"Nothing like a morning Fight Club as tempers flared on @AmericanAir LAS-CLT flight today," Ross said in the clip. "So much for social distancing! #AAFightClub"

In the video, one woman can be heard shouting at another passenger, who quickly gets up and attacks her.

One of the women can be seen wearing a mask but it unclear whether the other woman is wearing one.

The two squabble and wind up falling into the seats as they continue throwing punches.

The woman who started the fight later got off the plane after authorities were called to the scene.

American Airlines released a statement sharing their COVID-19 mask policy and the events leading up to the video.

The  airline said: "On Monday, a customer on American Airlines Flight 1665 with service from Las Vegas to Charlotte failed to comply with our mandatory face-covering policy after boarding the aircraft prior to departure. In accordance with our policy, the customer was subsequently asked to leave the aircraft and became disruptive, resulting in an altercation with other passengers.

"American Airline, like other U.S. airlines, began requiring customers to wear a face-covering while onboard aircraft beginning May 11. We have since strengthened our policy to require face coverings be worn at airports and onboard, and announced in June that we may deny future travel for customers who refuse to wear a face-covering for the duration of this requirement."

Enough is enough – IPOB warns security agents over arrest of members

 August 20, 2020

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Thursday, called on security operatives to immediately stop harassing and arresting its members in the Southeast.
IPOB made the call in reaction to the arrest of its Coordinator in Ebonyi State and the alleged intimidation of an innocent woman in Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State.

A statement by IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful urged the Governor of Ebonyi State and his counterpart in the Southeast to order the release of its members across the region.

The statement titled: “Enough is Enough, reads: We the global family of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) ably led by our great leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, hereby demand immediate stoppage of the incessant harassment and arrest of IPOB family members in different parts of Biafraland.

“We are particularly upset by the recent arrest of IPOB Coordinator in Ebonyi State; and the intimidation of an innocent woman in Oji River LGA of Enugu State by security operatives under the guise of searching for Radio Biafra station. This continued illegal abduction and kidnapping of innocent people in our land must stop. The Nigeria government and her security operatives should stop testing our will.

“We want to place the world on notice that the Nigeria Police Force, Army and DSS once again have started their normal house to house search of IPOB family members and those suspected to be IPOB supporters in Biafraland. On 18th of August 2020, the Nigeria army and police in their usual gestapo manner, akin to the Nazi era in Europe, abducted Mazi Igwe Ogbonnaya our IPOB Ebonyi State Coordinator for no crime other than being a Biafran.

“This provocative hounding of our people has continued amid killings, maiming and raping of our women by rampaging Fulani herdsmen in our communities which the same security agencies have not only pampered but allowed to continue unabated.

“It’s very sad to note that the security operatives abducted Mazi Igwe Ogbonnaya in less than a week after burying his young wife who died after a brief illness. This young man was abducted from his home at Ugwulangwu Ohaozara LGA Ebonyi State by terrorists in Nigeria police, army and DSS uniforms.

“We, therefore, call on Ebonyi State Governor, Engr Dave Umahi and his counterparts in the South East and South-South to release Biafra agitators arrested in their respective states before it’s too late.”

August 20, 2020

The Society of Petroleum Engineers Nigeria Council has said many oil and gas projects are not economic at the current oil price of $45 per barrel.

The Chairman, SPE Nigeria Council, Joseph Nwakwue, said the collapse in crude oil prices and demand had huge negative implications for petroleum engineers.

Nwakwue spoke at a press briefing on Tuesday ahead of the SPE Nigeria Energy Industry Transformation Summit slated to be held virtually next week.

He said, “COVID-19 shut down the world economy; with that came a reduction in the demand for our major commodity, oil.

“Reduced demand has resulted in low prices. That means less jobs; people are laying off. Projects that should have been sanctioned, maybe those with breakeven prices in the $50-$60 range, can no longer go forward.

“You can’t employ people for those projects. So, it has had a very massive negative impact on petroleum engineering as a whole.

“If the outlook for prices is not rosy – people don’t think prices are going to recover in the near term because it is going to take a while for demand to reach pre-COVID-19 levels.

“At $45, many projects will not be economic and if they are not economic, you don’t hire people. So, it is not good for us; it has been a very challenging time for the industry.”

Nwakwue said the forthcoming summit would discuss the changing global energy landscape, adding, “SPE Nigeria recognises the ongoing energy transition and the challenges it has thrown up.

“We also feel that as industry experts, we are better positioned to lead the discussion on what the industry and indeed government should be doing to ensure sustainability of not just our industry, but the entire economic system which is anchored on energy use. So, we feel an obligation to help figure out the way forward.

“It is important to recognise that we are in the early days of a transition, moving away from ‘dirty’ fuels to ‘cleaner’ fuels. Post-COVID-19, energy demand forecasts are still robust and would require significant capacity adds not just in fossils but in renewables.”

According to the SPE boss, the challenge is how to find and develop these resources in a safe, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable manner.

NPDC planning 500,000 barrel of crude oil per day –Kyari

August 20, 2020

Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, Mele Kyari, has assured that the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company will scale up its production to 500, 000 barrels of crude oil per day in the next two years to meet domestic consumption.

Speaking at the facility tour of Gas Handling Facility in Ologbo, Benin on Wednesday, Kyari said NPDC was currently producing 260,000 barrels per day as against the 136,000 barrels per day it produced a year ago.

According to Kyari, this is a very magnificent level of growth in any upstream company. He added that the NNPC was working with NPDC to hit the set target.

He said, “With the current level of work, it is possible for the NPDC to hit 500,000 barrel per day in two years.
“Today, NPDC has the highest number of rigs running in this country. Five rigs are running at the same time adding value and delivering major projects which will ultimately contribute towards the production of the 500,000 per day target.”

“Also, we are producing about five billion Standard Cubic feet (scf) of gas into the entire domestic market with NLNG and NPDC contributing to that total,” he added.

Kyari assured that the Ologbo plant when completed in October would halt the importation of LPG as Nigeria was blessed with gas and other petroleum resources.

He said, “At that time, you will see at least 30 trucks turning out of this place every day into the domestic market. This will be unprecedented.

“At that point, gas will be delivered without interruption into the domestic market, while crude oil will also be supplied to the international market by our own company under our control.”
He added that the NPDC was a company owned 100 per cent by Nigeria and vowed to deliver it to be the number one upstream company in the country.

Oil exploration suffers setback as Nigeria’s rigs fall 33%

August 19, 2020

With many oil and gas companies struggling to stay afloat amid the current market situation, exploration activity in the country has suffered a decline as the number of active rigs fell by 33.33 per cent in July.

Data obtained by our correspondent from the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries showed that Nigeria’s rig count fell to six in July from nine in June.

The rig count, which stood at 21 in March, fell to 16 in April and eight in May.

The rig count is largely a reflection of the level of exploration, development and production activities occurring in the oil and gas sector.

The global oil benchmark, Brent crude, plunged to as low as $15.98 per barrel in April, its lowest since June 1999. It traded around $45 per barrel on Monday.

Analysts at Financial Derivatives Company Limited said on Monday that oil price volatility would continue in the coming weeks due to supply and demand concerns.

“The relaxation of output cuts by two million barrels per day in August will keep oil prices within the $42-$45 per barrel band,” they said in a report.
The collapse in crude oil demand and prices occasioned largely by the coronavirus pandemic has forced many operators to put exploration on the back burner.

One of the major indigenous independent oil companies in the country, Seplat Petroleum Development Company Plc, said late last month that to adapt to current market conditions and as directed by its Nigerian government partners, it was looking to significantly reduce its costs by at least 30 per cent across the business.

“Drilling of oil wells has been suspended, with all non-essential capital expenditure under review, to consider only activities that can be supported in the new oil price environment,” it said in its 2020 half-yearly financial results.
colludes with friend, fakes kidnap to extort money from parents

Asked what the exploration landscape would look like in Nigeria post-COVID-19, the Chairman, Society of Petroleum Engineers Nigeria Council, Joseph Nwakwue, said, “The outlook is no doubt gloomy given the relatively low forecasted oil prices and prevailing high unit costs in Nigeria.”

He listed three factors that could change the scenario.
The PUNCH had reported earlier this month that several major oil and gas projects in Nigeria may suffer further delays as the IOCs operating in the country saw their financials take a dive in the second quarter of this year.

Oil, gas stocks record N56bn loss in one month

 August 19, 2020

Oil and gas firms listed on the main and premium boards of the nation’s equity market reported a loss of about N56.19bn last month as spending in transportation declined considerably over coronavirus pandemic.

Checks by our correspondent revealed that the oil and gas sub-sector lost N56.19bn or 14.17 per cent to close at N340.48bn in market capitalisation on July 31, in contrast to N393.67bn at the beginning of trading on July 1.

The impact of the coronavirus outbreak has threatened the resilient outlook for Nigeria’s economy, mainly supported by the oil and gas sector.

A recent survey conducted by REACH Technologies, a Nigeria-based fintech, on behalf of FBNQuest, indicated a substantial decline in household spending on transportation.

According to respondents, spending on all forms of road transportation – private and public modes – declined by around -20 per cent year-on-year.
The decline in aviation fuel consumption is even more severe, given the closure of the international airspace to passenger flights and halting of commercial domestic flights.

Given relatively softer petroleum products demand in the first half of 2020, the near-term outlook for the sector is certainly subdued.
The downstream oil and gas business is typically a low margin one. However, other factors, mainly constraining policies, have led to historically low investments in the sector over the last decade.
The report said, “In our view, the fortunes of the sector could change with the growing possibility of full pricing deregulation.

“We believe the re-introduction of a market-friendly pricing template for petrol in March and the central bank’s current attempt at unifying foreign exchange rates increase the prospects of the end of mandated gasoline price ceilings.

“The newly adopted pricing template takes into consideration several factors such as the petroleum product cost and the foreign currency conversion rate at which oil marketing companies import petroleum products.

“We expect the recent adjustment of the naira official FX rate from N306/$ to N380 to test the durability of this template within this quarter.”

The report said assuming all other inputs remained constant on the most recently published petrol pricing template, an adjustment of the FX rate assumption to current levels raised ex-depot prices by approximately 20 per cent.

It said, “Competition within major marketers is growing with new ownership/management. Ardova (formerly Forte Oil, not covered) and 11 Plc (formerly Mobil Oil, not covered) are leading the charge.

“In the event that the Federal Government decides to continue with the new pricing template, effectively deregulating the sector, we see competition intensifying over the long term. Under this scenario, reach and distribution will be a key competitive advantage.”

They said in the near term, we the industry would take a hit from measures adopted to stem the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

CAN rejects CAMA, says govt cannot control churches

 August 20, 2020

The Christian Association of Nigeria has rejected the Companies and Allied Matters Act, 2020, “because it would snuff life out of the church and rank the church as a secular institution under secular control.”
The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had on August 7 signed into law, the Companies and Allied Matters Bill, 2020. The bill which has been passed by the National Assembly replaced the 1990 CAMA.

The Christian body described as “satanic”, section 839 (1) and (2) of the law which empowers the supervising minister “to suspend trustees of an association (in this case, the church) and appoint the interim managers to manage the affairs of the association for some given reasons.”

The PUNCH had earlier reported that the Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, Dr David Oyedepo, had also advised the Federal Government to expunge the part of the law that gives the minister the power to remove the board of trustees of churches without recourse to the court.

CAN in a statement signed on Thursday by Adebayo Oladeji, Special Assistant on Media and Communications to CAN President, Rev Samson Ayokunle, noted that the Federal Government has declared war on the church if it moved on to implement the law.

The statement was titled, ‘Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) rejects CAMA Completely.’

The statement read in part, “The leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria rejects outrightly the Companies and Allied Matters Act, 2020 that was assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari recently.
“The law, to say the least, is unacceptable, ungodly, reprehensible, and an ill-wind that blows no one any good. It is a time bomb waiting to explode.

“While we are not against the government fighting corruption wherever it may be found, yet we completely reject the idea of bringing the church, which is technically grouped among the NGOs, under control of the government. The Church cannot be controlled by the government because of its spiritual responsibilities and obligations.”

CAN queried, “How can the government sack the trustee of a church which it contributed no dime to establish? How can a secular and political minister be the final authority on the affairs and management of another institution which is not political? How can a non-Christian head of government ministry be the one to determine the running of the church? It is an invitation to trouble that the government does not have power to manage.”

It advised the government to “face the business of providing infrastructure for the people. Let them focus on better health provision, food, education, adequate security employment, etc. The government should not be a busy body in a matter that does not belong to it. The government does not have the technical expertise to run the church of God because of its spiritual nature.”

“If the government is bent on imposing a law on us which the entire Church in Nigeria is against, then, they have declared war on Christianity and the agenda to destroy the Church which we have spoken against before now is coming to the open more clearly. If you cannot give us good amenities of life, we would not allow you to take away our liberty to worship our Maker,” it vowed.

CAN, therefore, called on Buhari to “stop the implementation of the obnoxious and ungodly law until the religious institutions are exempted from it” and “return the law to the National Assembly for immediate amendment.”

COVID-19: Pastors yet to open churches are not believers – Chris Oyakhilome attacks Bakare, others

 August 20, 2020

Rev Chris Oyakhilome, founder of Believers Love World, also known as Christ Embassy Church, has lambasted pastors that have refused to reopen their churches due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Oyakhilome said such pastors have denied the faith, stressing that they are no longer believers.

Addressing his members yesterday, Oyakhilome said, “If you refuse to open church for fear of being infected, you were never a believer.

“This is a great concern because there were churches that were thought to be churches until recently. We find a lot of ministers who were thought to be advocates of the gospel advocating for shutting down the churches because they cannot guarantee safety.

“It is pressure like this that reveals what is a church and what is not. Do they really believe in God, the same God of the patriarchs in the Bible?”

“When you get to that point where you are afraid of opening churches for fear of being infected, you have denied the faith. You never believed,” he said.

Recall that pastors like the Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church (CGCC), Tunde Bakare, had warned against the reopening of churches.

Bakare had told Christians not to allow any religious leader or government official, to lead them like a sheep to the slaughter house.

Also, Pastor Sam Adeyemi of Daystar Christian Centre had said his church would open when it’s safe.

Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny is in a coma and on a ventilator in a hospital in Siberia after falling ill from suspected poisoning during a flight, his spokeswoman said Thursday.

Kira Yarmysh said on Thursday that Navalny, 44, was flying from Siberia to Moscow after a work trip to Tomsk when his plane made an emergency landing after he fell ill.

He is now in grave condition in the intensive care unit for toxicology patients in Emergency Hospital No 1 in the Siberian city of Omsk, according to the TASS state news agency.

"Alexei has toxic poisoning," she wrote on Twitter. "Alexei is now in intensive care."

"We think that Alexei was poisoned with something mixed in his tea. That was the only thing he drank in the morning," Yarmysh said. "Doctors say the poison was quickly absorbed through the hot liquid."

She told the Echo Moskvy radio station that Navalny was sweating on the plane and asked her to talk to him so that he could "focus on a sound of a voice". He then went to the bathroom and lost consciousness.

Navalny is in the intensive care unit for toxicology patients in Emergency Hospital No 1 in the Siberia city of Omsk, the TASS state news agency reported.

Navalny, 44, is in grave condition, TASS said, citing the head doctor of the hospital.

"Alexei is still unconscious. He was put under ventilator. Police were called to the hospital on our demand," said Yarmysh.

Yarmysh said she believed the suspected poisoning was connected to this year's regional election campaign.

Past attacks

Navalny known for his anti-corruption campaigns against top officials and outspoken criticism of President Vladimir Putin, has suffered physical attacks in the past.

Last year, Navalny was rushed to a hospital from prison where he was serving a sentence following an administrative arrest, with what his team said was suspected poisoning. Doctors then said he had a severe allergic attack and discharged him back to prison the following day.

He also endured chemical burns to his eye in 2017 when attackers threw green dye used as a disinfectant at his face outside his office.

The charismatic lawyer and whistle-blower, has been travelling the country to promote a tactical voting strategy to oppose pro-Putin candidates in more than 30 regional elections in September.

He has been the target of multiple criminal probes while his Anti-Corruption Foundation is regularly raided by police and investigators.

He has served numerous terms in police cells for organising illegal protests.

Last month, the politician had to shut the foundation after a financially devastating lawsuit from Yevgeny Prigozhin, a businessman with close ties to the Kremlin.

The most prominent member of Russia's opposition, Navalny campaigned to challenge Putin in the 2018 presidential election, but was barred from running.

Vyacheslav Gimadi, a lawyer with Navalny's foundation, said the team is requesting Russia's Investigative Committee open a criminal probe.

"There is no doubt that Navalny was poisoned because of his political stance and activity," Gimadi said in a tweet on Thursday.

Former US ambassador to Moscow Michael McFaul tweeted: "Praying @navalny will be ok."

Audu Ogbeh: Killings In The North Now Like Civil War Era
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-20-2020, 11:46 AM - No Replies

Quote:As  Nigeria’s  security crisis bites  harder, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has decried the spate of killings in the North, urging all stakeholders to come together to save the region from the spate of killings in the region.

Newly elected ACF chairman, Chief Audu Ogbeh, who raised the alarm in Kaduna Wednesday, charged the federal and northern state governments to improve security in the North and create job opportunities for the teeming northern youths.Ogbeh is the immediate past minister of agriculture during the first tenure of the Muhammdu Buhari administration.

He urged northern leaders and elite not to make utterances that could aggravate the security situation, just as the group tasked the northern states to avail themselves of opportunities in the agricultural sector.

Addressing the ACF National Working Committee meeting, which he presided over, Chief Ogbeh said: “If we do not save the North now, we will lose the North. We are faced with the problems of killings day and night which are greater than ever, at no time has life been so tough except during the civil war. Our responsibility now is greater than before.”

“ACF is not a political party but an organization working for peace and stability in the North. Some Nigerians mistake the ACF to be an ethnic, tribal, religious or a political organisation. It is none of these. We have over 300 tribes in the North and we cannot afford to be an ethnic organisation because 78% of Nigerian land mass is in the North.”

Speaking in a communiqué issued after the NWC meeting and signed by its national publicity secretary, Mr Emmanuel Yawe, the ACF resolved that “northern states should take advantage of the N75 billion loan to farmers in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under the Nigerian Incentive-Based Risk Sharing in Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL).

“Because of the existing tensions and crises leading to a general sense of insecurity, destruction of property and killings in the North, religious, ethnic, traditional and political leaders in the North should be cautious in their utterances and should refrain from making wild and inflammatory utterances that will aggravate the situation.

“Federal and state governments must take urgent steps to arrest the deteriorating security situation in Northern Nigeria which has led to insurgency, terrorism, banditry, ethnic and religious disturbances all over the North.

“The government, particularly state governments of the Northern region should pay adequate attention to agriculture which offers more opportunities for diversification and the development of a more sustainable economy for the North and the country.

“School enrollments have remained low in the Northern region. State governors of the North should take urgent steps to enhance school enrolment and eradicate the rampant incidence of street begging which is very unhealthy for the overall development of the North.

“Unemployment has become a big menace to the Northern region. State governors are advised to design employment schemes for our teeming youths who have become frustrated and pose an additional threat to the security of the North and the country. State governors are also advised to key into programs of the federal government designed to offer employment to the youth and alleviate poverty.”

Terrorists hold hundreds hostage
Meanwhile, terrorists from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), an offshoot of Boko Haram, overran Kukawa in the Lake Chad region late Tuesday, seizing people who had just returned to their homes after spending nearly two years in displacement camps, AFP quoted head of local militia, Mr. Babakura Kolo as saying.

“The terrorists attacked the town in 22 trucks around 4:00 pm (1600GMT) yesterday and engaged soldiers guarding the town in a fierce battle,” he said.

Residents of Kukawa, escorted by the military, had returned to the town just August 2, on the orders of the Borno state authorities. They had been living in camps in the regional capital Maiduguri, 180 kilometres (120 miles) away, where they fled following a bloody attack November 2018.

A local chief who accompanied the residents to the town said the people had returned with the hope of cultivating their farmlands “only to end up in the hands of the insurgents.”

“We don’t know what they would do to them but I hope they don’t harm them,” said the chief, who asked not to be identified for safety reasons.A security source who confirmed the incident to AFP said fighter jets were deployed from Maiduguri Wednesday to “tackle the situation”, without giving details.

Nigeria’s decade-long militant conflict has forced around two million out of their homes, most of them from the Northern part of Borno. Many have moved into squalid displacement camps in Maiduguri, where they rely on handouts from international charities.

In the last two years, local authorities have been encouraging the displaced to return home, despite concern by international charities that this is not safe.
Residents have been returned to five major towns since 2018, where they are confined under military protection, with trenches dug around towns to try to fend off militant raids.Despite the fortifications, the insurgents have continued to launch attacks.Residents who venture out to work on their farms or collect firewood have been killed or abducted.

The United Nations last Friday said 10.6 million out of the 13 million people in the conflict-ravaged states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe would need humanitarian assistance this year.It said the figures represented a 50-percent increase since last year, and the highest tally since the beginning of the joint humanitarian response five years ago.

Troops kill 20
In a related development, the Nigerian Air Force reportedly killed 20 suspected commanders and members of the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) at Bukar Meram and Dole, in Borno state, during an airstrike.

The Defence Headquarters said troops of Operation Hail Storm, the air component of Operation Lafiya Dole, carried out the operations Monday at the fringes of the Lake Chad region where the terrorists, including some of their leaders were killed.Coordinator Defence Media Operations Maj. Gen. John Enenche said this in a statement Wednesday. He said the airstrike destroyed Bukar Meram, a logistics hub of ISWAP leaders.

The statement said: “In continuation of airstrikes being conducted under subsidiary Operation Hail Storm, the Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole has successfully neutralised some ISWAP commanders and knocked out logistics facilities at Bukar Meram on the fringes of the Lake Chad in Borno State, while also neutralising several terrorists at Dole, a settlement in the Southern part of Borno State.”It said the air interdiction missions were executed August 17 on the heels of credible intelligence reports indicating a resurgence of terrorists’ activities in the two settlements.

SOKAPU on fresh killings
And reports from Kaduna state say despite the 24-hour curfew, suspected Fulani militias have allegedly invaded Unguwan Gankon village in Gora ward in Zangon Kataf local government area of the state, killing two persons and burning 7 houses.

The local government area has been on 24-hour curfew for about 63 days, following the Zangon Kataf unrest when a farmer was alleged to have been killed in a farmland.

Alleging a new wave of killings amidst the curfew, the National Public Relations Officer Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU), Luka Binniyat, in a statement said:  “Yesterday, 18th August 2020, amidst a rigidly imposed punishing 24 hrs curfew that is 63 days today, armed Fulani militia invaded Unguwan Gankon village in Gora ward, Zangon Kataf local government area and killed two persons and burnt 7 houses.Neighbours, however, came to their rescue and the murderers fled.

“The names of the victims are Kefas Malachy Bobai, a 30-year-old farmer and father of three and Miss Takama Paul, 16, a student.”The statement explained that though armed troops arrived after the killers had escaped, SOKAPU said it was grateful that there was a response from the military.

The statement said: “The previous day, 17th August 2020, Mr Bulus Joseph, 48, father of 9 was murdered gruesomely in his farm at Sabon Gida Idon along Kaduna – Kachia road, in Kajuru LGA, by armed Fulani militia. He stood up to the killers so that his wife and 3 children could escape, which they did. But he paid the price with his life as he was sub-humanely butchered by the cold-blooded murderers.”

“On the 16th of August, Pastor Adalchi Usman, 39 and father of 2 was murdered. Pastor Usman, who was the pastor of ECWA Church, Unguwan Madaki, Maro ward, in Kajuru LGA in the Southern part of Kaduna state, was ambushed while in a commercial vehicle he had boarded with three others. The killers came from the bush and just started shooting at the car.”

The statement further claimed  Mariah Na’Allah of Unguwan Madaki, Shekari from Unguwa Ali – a native of Anchuna village, Zangon Kataf LGA and Ezekiel Maikasa a native of Gadanaji in Kajuru LGA, the driver of the vehicle, Danlami Dariya, were abducted and at the time of releasing this statement, their whereabouts was still unknown.

Binniyat also said on the same night of 16th August 2020, Bugai village near Banikanwa in Kachia local government area was attacked by armed Fulani militia, stressing that the village head, Dan’azumi Musa, 67 was killed with his siblings and his aged mother, with six others sustaining grievous injuries.

Catholic bishops’ call
Meanwhile, Catholic bishops under Kaduna Ecclesiastical Province have called for genuine commitment on the part of government and the people in resolving the Southern Kaduna crisis. The clerics made the call at the end of their provincial meeting in Kafanchan Tuesday.

In a statement by the metropolitan chairman, Most Rev Mathew Man’Oso Ndagoso and secretary, Most Rev John Niyiring issued at the end of the meeting, they said peace can only be restored if the people agree to put aside their differences and live as one. They tasked the federal and Kaduna state governments to do more in terms of showing empathy to the victims of these attacks instead of abandoning them in their grief.

The meeting advocated wider consultation across spectrum and also urged the state governor, Malam Nasir El-Rifai, to listen to those who differed with him to achieve lasting peace in the area. The Catholic Bishops also challenged the political class in the area to rise beyond the boundaries of ethnicity, party and religious affiliations and see their people as one, instead of playing politics with their lives.

They however, commended the sacrifices made so far by the traditional and religious rulers and enjoined them to remain relentless in the service of their  people.

Blueprint reports that the Bishops of the Kaduna Ecclesiastical Province, comprising Kaduna, Kano, Kontagora, Minna, Sokoto, Kafanchan and Zaria, met to pray with the people and extend their condolences and stand in solidarity with the people of Southern Kaduna as a result of the recent killings in the area.

Receiving the bishops in their various domains in Zangon Kataf, Kagoro and Kafanchan, the Chief of Kataf, His Highness, Mr Dominic, Gambo Yahaya, that of Kagoro, His Highness, Mr Ufuwai Bonet & Emir of Jama’a, Alhaji Muhammadu Isa Muhammadu respectively, commended them for their visit and concern.

They said the visit would go a long way in helping to restore normalcy and achieve lasting peace in the area.
The monarchs reiterated their commitment to ensuring peaceful coexistence and meaningful development among their subjects, irrespective of any difference.

Masari on royal fathers
In a related development, the Katsina state govt said it would carry out reforms in its local govt administration to assign accurate roles & responsibilities to traditional rulers in an effort to improve security situation in the state.

Governor Aminu Bello Masari stated this when he received the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero on a familiarisation visit at the Government House Katsina Wednesday. He observed that the security challenges faced by the state, notably banditry and kidnapping, were bred by a leadership vacuum at the community level.

He noted that the Local Government Reforms of 1976 have created a vacuum by weakening the traditional institution and rendering it ineffective in checkmating crime at community level. The governor said the new local government reforms would enable local authorities to manage security matters within their communities.

“Village and Ward Heads are well abreast of happenings at the community level, they know every member of the community and their occupation, they know when a visitor comes in and when he leaves, it is a system that assigns defined responsibilities for every official in the local council.

“This makes the system well positioned to monitor the security situation in our community. But for village and Ward Heads to function there has to be some level of authority, because you cannot give somebody responsibility and deny him authority.

“So we are looking at the reintroduction of a village security system where community councils will be in charge by monitoring the security situation in their localities. The new reforms will reactivate District Head Councils to resume their critical role of maintaining security and good communal living.

“These councils will in turn advise the local government councils and furnish security agencies with the information they need to contain the crisis,” the governor said.

Family members of the deceased said Ibrahim had given one of his friends, Aminu Ahmad, N500, and sent him on an errand but that Aminu decided to use the money for himself. Woman 'forced to perform sex act on dog in exchange for drugs as laughing men watched'

A woman was filmed sexually abusing a black dog as two men pinned the animal down.

The woman, Sarah Joanne Meredith, 41, claims she was forced to perform a sex act on the dog in exchange for drugs.

In the footage, the laughing men told her to “keep going”, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Describing the video, Ayra Ali, prosecuting, told Wirral Magistrates Court in Merseyside: “A black medium-sized dog is being held by an adult male with the dog's back against his stomach."

The dog kicked out as another male held its front legs, the court heard.

Ali said Meredith then performed a sex act on the animal, adding: "The defendant stated she was forced to do this, however, the footage shows otherwise."

Sinead Fearon, defending, said: "The defendant is described as a vulnerable female, that's clearly what she is.

"She was promised she would get drugs if she did what the males said."

She said Meredith suffers from drug misuse, and relapsed following an incident which is currently being investigated by police.

Ms Fearon added: “The males haven't faced any prosecution in relation to proceedings.

"The male recording it is subject to criminal proceedings but not the males described in the footage who were holding the dog and making directions.

"This experienced bench will have dealt with cases where people explain how desperate they were to fix their habit. I don't think you will come across a case where someone has reached such low and such desperate measures."

Referring to the presence of press in the courtroom, Ms Fearon said: "The embarrassment will stay with her not just for today but for a considerable amount of time."

In 2016, Meredith "sorted herself out” but was the subject of a “heinous” crime in January this year.

She then “started using more drugs”, Ms Fearon said.

She explained: "She started getting more desperate which demonstrated itself in the offence she has pleaded guilty to."

Speaking directly to magistrates herself, Meredith said: "I have had a serious mental breakdown. I am on the list for rehab in Macclesfield."

Today's case was adjourned by magistrates' to allow a report to be prepared.

Meredith was released on unconditional bail until her next appearance on September 21.

The man accused of filming the act was also due to appear in court charged with possessing extreme pornography.

Philip Thomas, 60, of Beckwith Street, Birkenhead, failed to attend today's hearing and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
