Disgraced singer, R. Kelly allegedly attacked by another inmate inside Chicago Prison

R. Kelly has allegedly been attacked by another inmate inside Chicago prison.

According to TMZ,  the incident recently went down inside the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago, where he is being held after pleading not guilty to dozens of state and federal sex crime charges in Illinois, Minnesota, and New York.

The news site reports that the 53-year-old was sitting on his bed when another inmate walked in his cell and started punching him.

Federal law enforcement sources told TMZ that the inmate attacked R.Kelly because he was angry about the detention facility being placed on lockdown on different occasions due to the singer's protesters outside the jail.

After the alleged attack, R. Kelly was examined by a doctor, who determined the singer was okay as he didn't suffer any broken bones or serious injuries.

Ganduje To Sign Yahaya Sharif-Aminu Death Warrant Over Blasphemy
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Edoman - 08-27-2020, 11:17 PM - No Replies

Quote:Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, on Thursday, expressed his readiness to sign the death sentence judgment on an alleged blasphemy by a 22-year-old Aminu Yahaya Sharif by a Judge of Kano Upper Shari’ah Court.

The Judge, Aliyu Kani, said his judgment was based on Section 382 (b) of Kano Shari’ah Penal Code of 2000.

Ganduje made the statement during a special meeting held at Africa House, Government House, Kano, on Thursday.

He said, “What happened is so important to the state and to the security of the state and the nation in general. What the Court did is absolutely right. And we support it completely. Such kind of irresponsible act, if not because of the state power, nobody could know what would happen in the future,” he said.

He added, “The man, who did that, confessed to being a follower of a particular Islamic Sect. But the adherents of that Sect rejected him right away. So, we need to understand the importance of this judgment. We are lucky that scholars maintained that it wasn’t a case for a particular sect, but rather of one who just decided to derail.”

According to him, the state government has accepted the death sentence verdict and the rule of law surrounding the case.

“I will not waste time in signing the warrant for the execution of the man, who blasphemed our Holy Prophet of Islam,” he said.

Also, he commended how the court handled the case and commended all sections of the society for not fomenting trouble when the case was in the court, adding that, “Our eyes are there following everything bit by bit. We thank Almighty Allah, that the court sitting went on successfully.”

“Lawyers just told us that the case could go up to Supreme Court. So if that happens, I will not waste time in approving the verdict right away. And the second issue is, if the victim did not take up the case to appellate courts, I will not waste time to give the approval for the execution. I will not take more than few minutes to accept the verdict,” he added.

Ganduje’s announcement was in the presence of the Commissioner of Police, Director State Security Service, representative of Christian Association of Nigeria, Eze Ndigbo in Kano, Igwe Boniface Ibekwe; representatives of Nigerian Bar Association, representatives of Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria, and Comptroller of Kano Correctional Centre among others.

Annkio Briggs Condemns The Killing Of IPOB Members In Enugu(video)

Foremost Niger Delta activist, Annkio Briggs, has condemned the killing of IPOB members in Enugu by the security forces. Briggs wondered how a peaceful meeting being held in school was reduced to a shooting spree by the security agencies when everyone knows that IPOB do not bear arms.

Briggs admonished Nigerians who keep quiet in the face of oppression and killings because it is happening elsewhere and doesnt concern them. She said that anybody has the right to agitate not to be part of Nigeria and nobody should be killed for exercising that right

She also touched on resource control saying that the Oil wealth of the Niger Delta has been taken away and the people given a paltry 13% while those who are mining solid minerals like Gold in Zamfara State keep 100% of the profits.

China Fires 'Aircraft-Karrier Killer' Missile In Warning To US
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-27-2020, 09:08 PM - No Replies

Quote:Ballistic missiles launched in response to US aerial activities in a 'no-fly zone' area during a Chinese naval drill.

China has fired two missiles, including one dubbed an "aircraft-carrier killer", into the South China Sea, according to a news report, in a pointed warning to the United States as tensions in the disputed sea lane rise to new levels.

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported on Thursday that Beijing fired one intermediate-range ballistic missile, DF-26B, from Qinghai Province and another medium-range ballistic missile, DF-21D, from Zhejiang Province on Wednesday in response to US aerial activities in a "no-fly zone" area.

In response, Mark Esper, the US defence chief, said China has repeatedly fallen short of promises to abide by international laws, noting that China seems to be flexing its muscles the most in Southeast Asia.

The two missiles were reportedly fired in the direction of the area between Hainan province and the disputed Paracel Islands, the Hong Kong-based publication added, quoting an unnamed source.

According to the paper, a US U-2 spy plane had reportedly entered a Chinese-designated "no-fly zone" on Tuesday without permission during a live-fire naval drill conducted by China in the Bohai Sea off its north coast.

In a social media post, Liu Xiaoming, China's ambassador to the United Kingdom, said that the US move "severely disrupted" China's normal exercises and "training activities."

Zhao Lijian, China's foreign ministry spokesman, described the spy plane overflight as "provocative actions" and urged the US to stop.

The DF-26B missile, which was formally launched earlier this month, is capable of hitting moving targets at sea, making it an "aircraft-carrier killer", according to the state-owned Global Times.

Chinese Defence Ministry spokesperson, Senior Colonel Wu Qian, was previously quoted as saying that the missile can carry conventional or nuclear warheads and is capable of launching precision strikes on land and sea targets.

With its range of 4,500km (2,796 miles), DF-26 can reach the West Pacific and the Indian Ocean, as well as American facilities in Guam, the British island of Diego Garcia and even the Australian city of Darwin

'Within accepted rules'

Meanwhile, the DF-21, has been described as an anti-ship ballistic missile system, also meant for attacking moving ships at sea.

In July, two US aircraft conducted freedom of navigation exercises and military drills with its allies in the South China Sea, prompting an angry response from Beijing.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity to Reuters, a US official confirmed the firing of the two missiles on Wednesday adding that an assessment was under way to determine the type of missile launched.

The Pentagon, meanwhile, confirmed the U-2 overflight, adding that the activity in the Indo-Pacific region was "within the accepted international rules and regulations governing aircraft flights".

News of the missile launches come as the US announced that it was blacklisting 24 Chinese companies and targeting individuals it said are part of construction and military actions in the South China Sea, its first such sanctions move against Beijing over the disputed seas

The US Commerce Department said the two dozen companies played a "role in helping the Chinese military construct and militarize the internationally condemned artificial islands in the South China Sea."

Separately, the State Department said it would impose visa restrictions on Chinese individuals "responsible for, or complicit in", such actions and those linked to China's "use of coercion against Southeast Asian claimants to inhibit their access to offshore resources".

In July, Washington said it could sanction Chinese officials and enterprises involved in coercion in the South China Sea after it announced a tougher stance rejecting Beijing's claims to offshore resources there as "completely unlawful".

China claims virtually all of the potentially energy-rich South China Sea, but Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also lay claim to parts of an area, through which more than $3 trillion of trade passes each year.

The US accuses China of militarising the South China Sea and trying to intimidate Asian neighbours who might want to exploit its extensive oil and gas reserves.

US warships have gone through the area to assert the freedom of access to international waterways, raising fears of confrontation.

A spokesperson for China's embassy in Washington condemned the US sanctions as "completely unreasonable," and urged the US to reverse them.

"(South China Sea Islands) is an integral part of China's territory, and it is fully justified for us to build facilities and deploy necessary defence equipment there," the spokesperson said.

"The Chinese government has firm determination to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity."

US 2020 Elections: Trump challenges Biden to drug test before debate

Barely three months to the US presidential elections, the US President Donald Trump, has challenged Democratic challenger, Joe Biden, to drug tests before their first electoral debate next month.

Biden, 77, and Mr Trump, 74, will have three debates before the 3 November election. The three presidential debates will take place in Cleveland, Ohio, on 29 September; in Miami, Florida, on 15 October; and Nashville, Tennessee, on 22 October.

Back in 2016,  Trump suggested his then-Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, had been "getting pumped up" before their debates and challenged her to take a drug test ahead of their final live TV encounter.

On Wednesday August 26, Trump made a similar claim, arguing that Mr Biden's debating ability had improved in the final Democratic primaries debate against Bernie Sanders.

Mr Trump said the former US vice-president "wasn't even coherent" during some of the 11 live TV debates he competed in earlier but by the time of the last debate on 15 March, he performed better against Senator Bernie Sanders.

Speaking to the Washington Examiner on Thursday August 27, Trump said; "I don't know how he [Mr Biden] could have been so incompetent in his debate performances and then all of a sudden be OK against Bernie."

He added: "It wasn't that he was Winston Churchill because he wasn't, but it was a normal, boring debate.

"You know, nothing amazing happened. And we are going to call for a drug test because there's no way - you can't do that."

Mr Trump said of the debates: "Well, it is a prizefight. It's no different from the gladiators, except we have to use our brain and our mouth. And our body to stand. I want all standing - they want to sit down."

Trump offered no evidence his rival might be on drugs other than to say: "I'm pretty good at this stuff."

Quote:[Image: 360x-1.jpg]

Former Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta was released by the junta which overthrew him last week, the military announced on Thursday. He is now "at home" in Bamako.

The military in power in Mali announced Thursday, August 27, to have released ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta (IBK) a week after overthrowing him . The former leader had spent seven years at the head of this state at war with the jihadists and which was facing a major political crisis.

"President IBK is free to move around, he is at home," Captain Djibrila Maïga, a spokesman for the junta, told AFP.

The National Committee for the Salvation of the People , set up by the military to lead the country, "informs national and international public opinion that ex-President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta has been released and is currently in his residence", CNSP announced on Facebook.

In his residence in Bamako

A member of his family indicated on condition of anonymity that Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta had returned during the night to his residence in Sebenikoro, district of the capital Bamako.

The 75-year-old former head of state was arrested along with several other officials on August 18 during the coup led by Malian officers after months of political turmoil.

The deposed president, commonly referred to as Malians by the acronym IBK, had become in the eyes of many of them the main culprit for the serious security, political and economic crisis in which their country has been sinking for years. He announced his resignation on national television the same evening, saying he had no other choice to avoid bloodshed.

He had been held since in a place not officially disclosed.

INEC Chairman, Yakubu, Meets With Oba Of Benin Over Edo Elections (Photos)
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-27-2020, 08:15 PM - No Replies

Quote:The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu met with Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II on Thursday ahead of the highly anticipated Edo state gubernatorial Elections.

He was welcomed by the Oba alongside his entourage. Yakubu earlier met with the Inter Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), in Benin. He assured that the commission was ready for the elections.

“The whole purpose of this visit is to see firsthand the level of preparation. Yes, we received reports at the headquarters but we feel that it is important to come to Benin and see for ourselves what is on the ground.

“On Feb. 6, 2020, the commission released a timetable and schedule of activities for Edo and Ondo governorship elections. We gave seven and eight months notices for the Edo and Ondo elections respectively.”

“And we itemised 14 activities in the timetable and schedule of activities to be carried out on specific dates beginning with the publication of the notice of election and ending with election day proper.”

He also revealed that the commission was committed to ensuring a safe environment for the peaceful conduct of the election.

Audu Ogbeh: We Must Make Peace Or We Lose The North
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-27-2020, 07:13 PM - No Replies

Quote:• Killings, criminality don’t build any society
• It’s time for international partnership to end insurgency.

Chairman of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and former minister of agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh spoke on the security challenges facing the North today and the search for solution, backwardness of the region in education, industry and agriculture. He also said the North cannot make progress in the midst of the mindless attacks and killings, which have enveloped many communities in the geographical region. He spoke with SAXONE AKHAINE in Kaduna.

Is the ACF disturbed over the killings in the country, particularly in the North?

Of course, ACF is disturbed over the incessant killings in the North. As the chairman of the forum, am equally disturbed too over the mindless killings. It is totally baffling when criminals enter a village to kill women and children, sometimes, old people. Even more worrisome, is that they carry some into captivity. What is the rationale behind this barbaric killing of women, children, widows, and old men? What is really going on? We in ACF are particularly distressed by these happenings, because it’s a gateway to destruction. Killings and destruction don’t build any society.

That is the main reason we had to wait for the easing of Convid-19 to meet today (last Thursday) and begin to ask ourselves what to do.This senseless situation, particularly here in Kaduna and in many states where the crises is going on is not in the best interest of the region. It is a disaster.

This crisis is destroying the society. We are very distressed. But you ask why are these crises happening now? I believe over the years we must have made very serious mistakes. In terms of development for instance, the North is far behind the South.

We are behind the South in education; we are behind the south in industrial growth. Looking through our records you will find that in Kano alone in the last forty years, it has lost 126 industries. We have textiles in Kaduna too, all gone. In Jos we have some industries that have gone. So you can see that slowly there was a decline.

The increasing excitement in the North on oil money, federation account and all that, a culture of depending on employed payment, employed service as a source of living, almost every body is depending on salary, particularly, in the last ten years in the North. Politics has become the major industry. This can’t make a society grow. I know every part of Nigeria has experienced economic shock because of some developments. Presently, agriculture does not even sustain most families due to some factors.

We have lost our place as the world’s second largest producer of groundnuts, after the United States and Argentina. We are still at number two in sorghum production in the world. We are doing well in some food crops, but the earnings from these agricultural products are no longer sufficient to carry out many things, particularly in education.

Many of these young ones need education. Over the years, we have allowed the two – agriculture and education, to go their separate ways. So, why should a child of five or seven years begin to roam the streets instead of being in school?

At that tender age children must begin to be built into responsible adults, today it is not so. Children of today want to be with their mummy and daddy, because they eat a lot. These mistakes had happened. And then, Boko Haram came, and the whole thing is spreading.

We are deeply worried. That is why we have started meeting and talking. We are looking for solutions and we want to join hands with our governors and legislatures to see what we can do.

People have lost hope of peace returning to the Northeast geo-political zone. What is your take?

You know Boko Haram began 2010 when (late President Umaru) Yar’Adua was the Head of State. It was at Abuja airport on his way to Brazil when the news of BH was broken to him. Immediately he gave instructions to the Army to flush the insurgents.

Let me recall that similar thing happened in Algeria too. It took them 21 years to curtail the insurgents. Once you have this kind of situation in a country, it’s extremely difficult to curtail and end it immediately. It takes time.

That is one. Two, what is the size of your army? How many divisions do you really have? A country like Nigerian should at least have 20 divisions. Do we have this number? Again, can we pay these soldiers? How many policemen do we have? These are pertinent questions to be asked.

But the size of army and police are grossly inadequate to man the territories. Look at our defence budget; it is also small. Even our National budget is small too.Nigeria’s budget is smaller than that of New York City.

Here is the dilemma: The Army, the DSS (Department of State Services), the police, Air force are over-stretched They are operating in nearly 34 states. So their numerical capacities are overwhelmed. In terms of equipment, these things don’t cost small money. What is the cost of Tukano fighter jet? You have to deposit huge sum of money to Americans before they start delivery of the fighter jets.

Then, in terms of landmass, Borno State is 30 times the size of Lagos. So, when people talk of Sambisa forest, it is not a tiny place, the forest is almost the size of Lagos. The North East area is vast; here we are talking about Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Bauchi and Taraba States.

I think, as I said earlier, some mistakes were made at the beginning. Secondly, we have had some irresponsible leadership in Borno at that time. I don’t want to name names. There is a lesson for politicians, stop using thugs and some groups.

What does a governor need a gang for? Once these thugs are used for a purpose they are dumped. When you dump them, they take up arms. Having said that, it may become necessary – am not a military man, to seek partnership with one or two foreign powers to end the insurgency.

When the governor of Borno said there was sabotage, the matter was dismissed.I will advice the military to investigate the matter thoroughly before writing it off. They might find something new. They may find the truth, because Zulum was not just talking for the fun of it.Why is it when sometimes they are moving to a target, they are usually ambushed. It means someone is leaking information to the insurgents.

That’s why ACF is now serious, about growing the economy in the region. We are many. The North is 76 percent of Nigeria’s landmass. It has resources. But we are poor. Let me reveal this fact, 72 percent of the country’s currency circulates in Lagos.

What this means is in every naira 72 kobo is in Lagos. What is left is for the rest of the country, the South East, South West and South South to share, excluding the North. This is the reality on ground. Many youths in the region are jobless as they have nothing to do.These youths are tired of just watching us drive in our nice cars. The youths are in despair. Most of them have lost control of what they do.So, this is the tragedy. But we are meeting because we are now trying to deal with the current situation.

Some people are really worried about what the Forum stands for. Is ACF really a religious or tribal organization?
Some people said ACF is a religious or ethnic group. But we say, no.The North has over 300 ethnic groups and it is called Arewa.Arewa means North in Hausa. So, there is no reason any one born in any of the Northern states to claim he is not a Northerner. What is happening is affecting all of us. It has nothing to do with religion or tribe.

Today, we have a big problem confronting everyone in the region. They are of course issues like access to credit, ICT(Information Communication Technology) and education, which we must improve upon.We will start partnering governments as well as international agencies in order to get somewhere.

Kindly share the main focus of ACF under your leadership?

Our main focus now is education, industrial growth, value-addition to agriculture and promotion of peace. You ask, is the peace we are aspiring in the North possible?

It has to be.We don’t just have a choice, we just have to make peace or we lose the North. I’m too old to go on exile. There are so many of us in the region. How will the millions of people living in the North survive as refugees in foreign countries like Niger Republic, Chad, Cameroon, Benin Republic and so on. So we have to make peace.

PRESIDENT BUHARI CONGRATULATES NIGERIAN BORN KAYCEE MADU, APPOINTED MINISTER OF JUSTICE IN ALBERTA, CANADA

President Muhammadu Buhari rejoices with Nigerian born Kaycee Madu, appointed Minister of Justice and Solicitor General for the Government of Alberta, in Canada.
Madu makes history as the first African born provincial Minister in Canadian history, and is also the Provincial Secretary and Keeper of the Great Seal of the Province of Alberta.

President Buhari describes the honour as “landmark and historic,” saying it once again pedestals people of Nigerian descent as go-getters, who distinguish themselves in different walks of life.
The President says as the first Black Justice Minister and Solicitor-General in Canada, Madu has written himself into history books, and urges Nigerians, both at home and abroad, to remain good Ambassadors of their country.

Kano elders petition Buhari, others over Ganduje’s move to take loan from China

Kano Unity Forum, headed by a former presidential candidate of the defunct National Republican Convention, Alhaji Bashir Tofa, has petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Assembly, and the Federal Ministry of Finance, against moves by Governor Ganduje to take over N300 Billion loan from China.

The elders who are local based and specialized groups on Thursday expressed grave reservations against the insistence resolve of the Governor to obtain loan from China Development Bank to construct phase 1 component of Light Mono Rail project in the State metropolis.

The petition signed personally by elder statesman, Alhaji Bashir Othman Tofa on behalf of Kano Unity Forum and made available to newsmen, explained that “save for few in official circles, nobody else knows the terms and conditions of the loan agreement”, adding that, “the exact amount being borrowed is shrouded in secrecy”.

The strongly worded statement noted that, “A 1st phase of the project costing over N300 billion, or may be even the N828 billion mentioned by others, coming mostly from a foreign loan is mind-boggling, to say the least. A rethink is not only needed, but necessary.”

Tofa in the signed statement stressed that “based on the analysis of the present indebtedness of Kano State as provided for by the Debt Management Office (DMO) Nigeria, it is extremely difficult, almost impossible for Kano State to sustain any indebtedness beyond the current liability portfolio of the state.”

The Forum cautioned that, “It needs to be noted that a rail project is never a project to be put in haste as we observed that it is neither in the medium nor long term plans of the State Government.”

The Kano stakeholders stated that, “If indeed the Chinese want to genuinely help with cheap loans, they should be requested to support critical sectors such as education, health, agriculture, power, science and technology, infrastructure, industry and water supply”, adding that “after all, the Chinese have become world leaders in these aspects of transformative development.”

The Group declared that “Kano Unity Forum would not give any self-serving politician the latitude to increase poverty and deprivation within the general public through ill-conceived public works.”

The Forum cautioned that, “We shall not be deluded by the attractive idea of good return from the investment. Rail project world over are known as highly capital intensive with a very negligible rate of return on investment. It’s more of a social welfare project, especially in less developed economies. “

Like Jesus Christ, I’m tempted to back out of Biafra struggle- IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), says like Jesus Christ, he is sometimes tempted to back out of the struggle for the realization of the sovereign state of Biafra.

Kanu shared his thoughts while reacting to the recent clash between some members of the secessionist group and security agents in Enugu state on Sunday, August 23.

In a letter to members of the secessionist group, Kanu compared himself to Jesus Christ who said to God at the Garden of Gethsemane “if it be possible, let this cup pass from me” when faced with temptations.

The letter in part reads

Quote:“In my most private moments, when I reflect on this struggle and its fallouts, I have often been tempted, like Christ, to ask that this cup be passed from me. I am sure you all feel the same in many fleeting moments of despair that is common with the fragile human spirit.

So, as we mourn this latest mass murder of our people, let us all take some comfort that they didn’t die in vain, they died in honour, they fell in defence of freedom and their precious blood will be best requited by our collective and abiding resolve to never back down until Biafra is restored.”

He, however, vowed to continue in the fight for the emancipation of his people.

Man mauled to death by two beloved white lions in horror attack while playfighting in South Africa

A  nature lover who reared two rare white lions from when they were cubs was mauled to death by them in a horror attack.

Conservationist West Mathewson, 68, was playfully wrestling his beloved lionesses Demi and Tanner on Wednesday, August 26, when one of them turned on him.

His wife Gill, 65, attempted to save her husband by distracting the 400lb lionnesses, but they had already inflicted fatal injuries.

He was badly injured and died from his injuries on his way to the hospital.

This isn't the first time the lionesses have killed someone. In 2017, they clawed a farm worker to death at Mr Mathewson’s safari known as Tree Top Lodge at Hoedspruit near South Africa’s Kruger National Park.

However, West Mathewson had continued to playfight and exercise them every day, believing they would never attack him.

A lodge spokesman confirmed that Demi and Tanner would "definitely not be put down."

They added: "West loved those cats as much as he loved his children and spent much of the day with them every day.

"They didn’t mean him any harm and it was just a tragic accident."

Despite the previous fatal attack, tourists had continued to flock in their thousands to walk with the animals.

Mom Killed, Baby Injured As Police Chase After A Suspected "Yahoo Boy" In Benin
User Avatar Forum: Other Stories
Posted by: Edoman - 08-27-2020, 02:43 PM - No Replies

A mother has died in an accident that occured while police officers were allegedly chasing a "Yahoo boy" in Benin.

Mrs Grace Obajay, 29, was in an Uber with her one-year five months old baby, when a car rammed into them, flinging the baby out of the car, knocking the mother out, and also causing injuries to the Uber driver.

According to Vanguard, the car that rammed into them was driven by a suspected Yahoo boy being chased by police.

The auto crash occurred along Airport Road, Benin City, Edo State, last Friday, August 21.

The mum, who worked as a Secretary with Floret Systems and was only two months from celebrating her second year wedding anniversary, had ordered the Uber after she closed work for the day when the accident occured.

She was left bleeding from the mouth and nose and was unconscious following the accident. Her son, who had been flung out of the window due to the impact of the crash, was badly injured and cried out. The Uber driver, named Precious John, was also badly injured and immediately called his elder brother for help.

Speaking with Vanguard , elder brother of the Uber driver, Dickson John said, “I got a call from my brother at about 11 am. All he could mutter was ‘ come quickly, I’m dying, I can’t breathe, my chest, accident, airport road…, and the call ended. I tried reaching back to him but could not get him.

“I was accompanied to the scene by one of my comrades, Godwin Esosa, where I saw my brother’s car stained with blood and fuel was dripping from its engine but there was no sight of him.

“We gathered from eyewitnesses that a team of policemen in a carton colour Audi car was chasing a suspected yahoo boy in a Toyota Camry 2012 model. In his bid to escape from the police, he ran into my brother’s car which was just entering airport road from Saint Paul. The policemen never made an attempt to save them. Rather, they abandoned them to fate.

“A Reverend father rushed the baby to Saint Philomena hospital for immediate attention, while my brother and mother of the baby were rushed to Faith Mediplex hospital for immediate medical attention. The yahoo suspect was rushed to the police clinic for treatment.

We Will Not Collapse Amotekun Into Community Police ― Akeredolu tells IG (Video
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-27-2020, 01:27 PM - No Replies

The chairman of South-West Governor’s Forum and Ondo State Governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, on Wednesday, said the South-West Security outfit, Amotekun, would not be collapsed into the planned community policing of the Federal Government.

Akeredolu disclosed that Amotekun would operate on its own within the confines of the law that established the outfit, saying those who are not comfortable with the decision to approach the court.

Akeredolu, who spoke during a live programme on a Channels Television’s programme monitored by our Tribune Online in Akure, said discussion is ongoing to allow the Amotekun corps to carry arms even as they currently make use of non-prohibited ammunition.

Akeredolu stated that the Amotekun corps has helped in the rescue of kidnap victims in the state and said the Amotekun security outfit has come to stay and fully ready to protect the lives of the Southwest people.

He kicked against having a central command structure for the planned community as the agreement was yet to be reached on its operation and command.

The Ondo Governor noted that in creating state police, there must be corresponding responsibility by sending more funds to the state, while he expressed optimism that security would be guaranteed in the country with the multi-level policing approach.

He said, “What we fail to agree on is operation and command. The operation and command of the multi-level of policing cannot be central. It is an idea that will come to be. There will be state police and at a point, the local government will have theirs.

“All of us combine together to ensure the security of lives and property. Community policing is a good idea. We must work towards having multi-level policing.

“The governor will not be the one solely responsible for the control of state police. It is not going to be a command to be headed by the governor.

“The state police will be answerable to the Council, a replication of what we have at the national level. The President is not in charge of the Nigeria Police. We as a council took the decision on who to appoint.

“Our major problem is where we have not reached a consensus among governors as to the right time to have multi-level policing.

“Ours is collaborative and not confrontational. We will collaborate and work together. We have deployed our Amotekun into the rural areas. That is where kidnapping is taking place. We recruited hunters who know the forest.

“It will not be accepted for Amotekun to be collapsed into community policing. We have a law that set it up.

“The law set up Amotekun and Amotekun is going to operate under its own laws. It is not going to be subsumed under any set up. We work together and collaborate. Whoever feels otherwise can go to court.

“In creating state police, there must be corresponding responsibility by sending more funds to the state. There is no state that won’t be able to afford it. What we spend on police in states is a lot.

“We have not yet agreed as what should be in the issue of ammunition. Amotekun is allowed to carry non-prohibited ammunition.

“Without ammunition, they cannot face bandits or kidnappers. We will continue to discuss the need for Amotekun to carry arms. Amotekun will gradually do its job until they are allowed to carry arm”

He said further “We will not collapse Amotekun to community policing. Amotekun will stand on its own. It will operate under its own law. It is not going to be collapsed.

“There is no intimidation. We will not collapse it. There is no need to pretend. We will make the, to understand.

“We are not forcing the IG to understand. We have our laws. If anybody feels otherwise. he should go to court. Amotekun has come to stay.”

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has declared that the Oyo State Security Network also known as Operation Amotekun will not be under the control of the federal government.

Makinde who noted that the security outfit will be under the control of the state government maintained that security of lives and property of the people in the state was important to him.

The governor made these declarations while addressing chairpersons of the 68 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas in the state, at a meeting held inside the House of Chiefs Secretariat, Ibadan on Wednesday.

Makinde, while insisting that Amotekun has come to stay in the state, added that it is impossible to achieve any meaningful development in an atmosphere of insecurity.

He said, “We want our people to sleep with their two eyes closed. Of course, security is one of the pillars of this administration, and we must do everything possible to invest in the security of lives and property. In Okeho the other day, armed robbers went to rob and the community rose against them and apprehended them. They combed the forests and they got them.

“This is why I will continue to say it and I am saying it for the whole world to hear; Amotekun is here to stay with us. And it will not be under the control of the federal establishment. It will be under our control. Security of our people is extremely important, because nothing can take place, as far as we are concerned, in an atmosphere of insecurity”.

Makinde while speaking further gave marching orders to the caretaker committee chairmen to set up Security Committees with a view to tackling the security challenges in their localities.

Shrinking of economy: Experts warn of mass poverty, predict recession in Q3

August 26, 2020

Nike Popoola and Okechukwu Nnodim

The Managing Director, Financial Derivatives Company Limited, Bismarck Rewane, has said that the Nigerian economy will slide into a technical recession in the third quarter of 2020.
Rewane who spoke with one of our correspondents on Tuesday also disclosed this in the FDC economic bulletin released on the country’s Gross Domestic Product report by the National Bureau of Statistics.
He said, “The Nigerian economy will slide into a technical recession in Q3’20 and is likely to see a W-shaped recovery as a second wave of COVID-19 infections could trigger a precision lockdown.

“The IMF is forecasting a negative growth of –5.4 per cent for 2020.
“The good news, however, is that the relaxation of lockdown measures and the gradual pick up in oil prices could ease the pace of economic contraction in the coming quarters.
“Economic recovery could be as early as Q2’21 if rapid steps are taken.”
Rewane noted that the contraction in economic growth meant that unemployment rate would be much higher in the coming quarters.

Also, he said, multidimensional poverty was likely to skyrocket as consumers’ battle with squeezed income and higher unemployment.
On impact on investors, he said, “The contraction in economic growth was expected by investors as indicators such as PMI already gave a direction of the overall performance of the economy.

“The FBN PMI contracted for three consecutive months before recovering to 53.9 points in June.

“Beyond the numbers, investors will be more interested in the policy response.

“On the monetary front, investors will keep a close watch on the direction of interest rates.

“Also, the quantum of fiscal catalysts in stimulating economic growth will be of keen interest to investors.”
Also speaking on the recently released GDP figures for Q2 2020, a former President, Association of National Accountants of Nigeria, Dr Sam Nzekwe, told one of our correspondents that Nigeria’s economy was already in a poor state before the outbreak of COVID-19.

Nzekwe stated that the outbreak of the virus worsened the already battered state of the Nigerian economy, adding that this was clearly reflected in the GDP figures released by the NBS.
“The figures or contraction of the economy was actually expected considering the precarious state of the economy before the outbreak of COVID-19,” he said.

Nzekwe added, “But this was made worse by the outbreak of the virus, following the high job losses, crash in oil prices and other negative effects of the virus.”

He, however, stated that what should be focused on now should be how to mitigate the lull in economic activities.
The former ANAN boss said the best option was for the government to intensify the push for economic diversification.

He said, “In diversifying the economy, government must make sure it provides a conducive environment that will attract investors. Infrastructure, security, local production, must be enhanced.”

Nzekwe noted that the agricultural sector should also receive the right support, as the industry could generate substantial foreign exchange for Nigeria when properly harnessed.

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry said the Nigerian trade sector had been in recession since the third quarter of 2018.

The Director-General, LCCI, Dr Muda Yusuf, spoke in response to GDP report released by NBS on Monday.
He said, “Trade is Nigeria’s second biggest sector by percentage contribution to output.

“We note that the sector has been in recession since Q3-2018 due to the closure of the land borders, port inefficiencies, and weak consumer spending among other structural challenges.

“These challenges coupled with the global pandemic magnified the magnitude of contraction to 16.59 per cent in Q2-2020 from -2.82 per cent reported in Q1-2020.

In the NBS report, during the second quarter of 2020, the nominal year on year growth rate of trade stood at –14.95 per cent.

This indicated a decrease of 17.97 per cent points when compared to the rate in the second quarter of 2019, and –14.67 per cent points lower than the previous quarter growth rate of –0.27 per cent.

The quarter on quarter growth rate was –15.14 per cent.

Mali: Jonathan Briefs Buhari, Says Junta Wants ECOWAS Sanctions Removed
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion

Quote:The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), again on Monday received briefings from former President Goodluck Jonathan, who is the Economic Community of West African States Special Envoy to Mali, on the current situation in the country.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the President at the meeting held inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said the priority in Mali now should be securing the country, which is largely occupied by terrorists.

The statement was titled, ‘President Buhari receives updates on Mali situation from Special Envoy, Goodluck Jonathan.’

Adesina said the meeting between the two leaders came ahead of an extraordinary virtual summit by ECOWAS heads of state and leaders, scheduled for Friday.

“About two-thirds of Mali is occupied by terrorists, and it makes common sense to secure the country, rather than pursuing individual interests,” he quoted Buhari as saying.

The President was further quoted as saying that the sub-region would take a common position on the issue when the leaders meet on Friday, hoping that an amicable and generally acceptable position to all interested parties would be arrived at.

The presidential aide said Jonathan updated Buhari on dialogue with the military coup leaders, who are seeking to stay in power for three years, before holding elections.

Adesina said Jonathan said the military leaders want ECOWAS to lift sanctions put in place, as it was already affecting the country, “but we told them that the authority to do such was only in the hands of ECOWAS heads of state.”

“They call themselves National Committee for the Salvation of the People. We asked them to allow ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita to return to his personal residence, where he would be given tight security, but they said he could travel abroad, and not return to answer questions they may have for him.

“We also told them that what would be acceptable to ECOWAS was an Interim Government, headed by a civilian or retired military officer, to last for six or nine months, and maximum of 12 calendar months.

“The Interim Government would then organise elections to restore full constitutional order,” Jonathan reportedly told the President.

The former President was further reported to have disclosed that his team was allowed to meet with the ousted President, who confirmed that he resigned voluntarily, adding that he was no longer interested in returning to his former position.

Nixon Chibuzor Ohizu said to be a prominent pastor in Zimbabwe's capital city Harare, has been arrested for allegedly offering a $2,000 bribe to National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) officials.

The 46-year-old head pastor of Empowerment Ministries Church was accused of offering USD $2,000 to two high ranking NRZ officials so they can reverse the cancellation of a lease agreement between his church and the transport utility.

Chibuzor who was served the lease agreement on August 7, met Colonel Nyabambi and Clive Ncube at the NRZ office. The two NRZ officials reportedly accepted a bribe offer of $2,000 and agreed to reverse the cancellation on the lease agreement once he had delivered the agreed amount.

Upon returning to the office not knowing that a trap has been set, he was arrested by the police. The bribe money which was in $100 denominations was recovered by the police and is currently being kept as an exhibit.

He was not asked to plead to the allegations when he appeared before Harare magistrate Richard Ramaboa. He was remanded out of custody to October 1 on $10, 000 bail and was ordered to surrender his passport.

Chris Omashola: I Don’t Have Problem With APC, But Obaseki Will Win Edo Election

Quote:As the Edo State Governor election draws closers, controversial Lagos clergyman and General Overseer Of Zionwealth Church, Lekki, Chris Omashola, Monday, insisted that the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, and current Governor, Godwin Obaseki will win the election.

In a statement in Lagos, the cleric called for an end to godfatherism in the politics of the state.

Endorsing Obaseki publicly, on his verified twitter account Omashola, said: “God is working wonders in Edo State through the human instrumentality of Governor Godwin Obaseki.
If I were Adams Oshiomhole, I would stand by my truth, regardless of the direction of the wave; that is called integrity. I am maternally an Edo man and would always wish my people well. I do not have a problem with the All Progressives Congress, APC, but Ize-Iyamu is a no-no for me.”

According to the statement, Omashola, a popular Nigerian clergyman, philanthropist, businessman and a socio-political evangelist, has been involved in many social media controversies, blackmail, and, sometimes threats to life, for fearlessly speaking truth to power, society and constituted authorities in the fierce face of opposition.

The popular cases of Naira Marley, Bobrisky, and his fearless message to President Buhari, on behalf of hungry incapacitated Nigerians at the peak of the COVID-19 lockdown measures, are just to mention a few.

Omashola is an astute businessman; the Chairman of Zionwealth Group; CEO of ACO Media; a PR Consultant at Krystal Properties, Lekki; Zionwealth Oil and Gas; Kevwe Auto Limited, among others.

A crowd gathered in the Idumota area of Lagos Island on Wednesday, August 26, after a man was seen dozing near the base of the pedestrian bridge.

The incident occurred at about 10.30 am.

According to Vanguard, eyewitnesses claim the man, clad in shirt and a pair of trousers with a bag hung around his neck, was seated and dozing off, thereby blocking some traders from displaying their wares.

At first, they assumed he was ill and tried to help him only to discover he was drunk.

Seeing that he wasn't ill, one of the traders angrily attempted to pull him out of the space where they were meant to display their goods but the man, who was still deeply asleep, lay gently on the floor and continued dozing.

FG Asks Multichoice To Suspend DSTV, GOTV Price Increase
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-27-2020, 09:29 AM - No Replies

Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

Quote:The Federal Government has asked MultiChoice to suspend its planned increase in tariff which will take effect from September 1, saying it is hostile to Nigerians who are currently going through harsh economic conditions, Daily Independent reports.

The government also said the company did not consult with it before the decision was made, saying it only read about the increase in the media like every other Nigerian.

MultiChoice had, last week, announced increment in the prices of DStv and GOtv subscriptions for the second time in less than four months.

Giving reasons for its upward review of prices, the company cited factors such as inflation, operations, the mandatory increase in Value Added Tax (VAT), and devaluation of the naira.

The company, in a statement to subscribers, said that from Tuesday, September 1, 2020, MultiChoice would effect its new price regime as follows: DSTV Premium will move from N16, 200 to N18, 400; Compact Plus from N10, 925 to N12, 400; Compact from 6,975 to 7,900, and for users of GOtv Max, they will have to pay the sum N3, 600 from 3,280.

One of the texts read: “Dear customer, please be advised of a price adjustment on your DStv Premium package from September 1. Your new monthly subscription will be N18, 400.”

Speaking exclusively with Daily Independent, Armstrong Idachaba, the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), said while it had written to MultiChoice to suspend the tariff, it had also fixed a meeting with their management for Monday to discuss the rationale behind the increases.

“In business, especially in a liberal economy, market operators try to fix their prices according to the dictates of the market.

However, it is the job of the regulator to ensure that whatever services are offered meet the yearnings and aspirations of the people in a way that consumers are protected.

“With regards to broadcasting, there is nowhere in the Act of the commission which gives us the power to fix prices. I am told but have not confirmed that the Telecommunications Act gives the telecom regulator, the NCC, the power to determine prices.”

Speaking further, he said while the NBC does not have the powers to fix prices for the operators, it has the powers to call them to order if it discovers that they are exploiting Nigerians.

He explains: “We have no provision to regulate the prices that those who offer broadcast services fix but if, in the course of fixing prices, we find out that it is very exploitative and injurious to the consumers, we have the power to call them to order, which we have done severally".

"On many occasions, we have told them not to increase the price or suspend price increase. But usually the argument they give is that there are fluctuations in the value of the naira.

“Before the latest increase, there was an increase but they said it was due to the increase in Value Added Tax (VAT). So, they added the new VAT rates to their existing charges.

“Even at that time, we were at the National Assembly when the House of Reps requested that they should revert to the old prices which we directed them but they said if they had to do that, then they would not be paying VAT".

"We are therefore surprised that without further consultation, immediately after that, they now announced a price increase citing prevailing fluctuations in the economy, value of the naira, and cost of doing business.

“We have written to them today because they didn’t consult with us before they did that. We only read it in the news.

“It is only today that they forwarded a corresponding letter to us, meaning that they have taken their decisions but are merely notifying us.”

He said aside from MultiChoice, StarTimes’ management had also been summoned to explain why they decided on price increases at a time Nigerians are going through tough times.

“We have told them to suspend it until we meet them. We are meeting with them next week Monday. They and StarTimes will have to come and explain to us why they have to increase prices at this time that Nigeria is going through economic challenges".

“I think it is hostile to the interest of the consumers. Our final positions will be known when we meet with them Monday".

No Tariff Increase, Buhari Ordered Mass Metering - NERC
User Avatar Forum: Market Place
Posted by: Edoman - 08-27-2020, 09:26 AM - No Replies

Quote:The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has ordered operators in the power sector to carry out mass metering of unmetered customers nationwide, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission announced on Wednesday night.

In a tweet via its official Twitter handle, the NERC also declared that it had not approved any increase in electricity tariffs, as reported in some quarters on Wednesday.

The commission said, “The President has directed that there should be a nationwide mass-metering programme in an effort by the Federal Government to put a stop to estimated and arbitrary billing for electricity.

“He has also approved a waiver of the import levy on meters so that those that do not have meters can be supplied as early as possible at reasonable costs.”

On tariffs, the NERC stated, “The general public and all stakeholders in the power sector are by this statement urged to disregard any reports of an arbitrary tariff increase affecting Nigerians.”

The information tweeted by the NERC was signed by its Chairman, John Momoh, as the commission further clarified that tariff reviews going forward would only follow service-based principles.

It stated that under these service-based principles, power distribution companies would only be able to review tariff rates for customers when they consult with customers, commit to increasing the number of hours of supply per day and quality of service.

It said, “In all cases, poor and vulnerable Nigerians will not experience any increase.

“In line with these expectations, Discos are directed to engage with their customers on a Service Based Tariff structure.”

The NERC said under the Service Based Tariff Structure, Discos could only review tariffs for customers under the condition that customers were consulted and communicated a guaranteed level of electricity service by the Discos based on hours of supply.

It said customers would also be metered, adding that no estimated billing based on the strict enforcement of the capping regulation.

“This means that unmetered customers will not experience any cost increase beyond what is chargeable to metered customers in the same area,” the regulator said.

Osimhen ready for Napoli challenge
It added, “Even under the above conditions, there will be no change in tariff for the most vulnerable as tariffs for those consuming 50KW or less remain frozen.”

It said customers receiving less than 12 hours of supply would also not experience any change in tariffs.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

THURSDAY 27TH AUGUST.

GODLINESS WITH CONTENTMENT

[And it is indeed, a source of immense profit, for] godliness accompanied with contentment (that contentment which is a sense of inward sufficiency) is great and abundant gain (1 Timothy 6:6 AMPC).

The Bible defines contentment for us in our opening verse as “a sense of inward sufficiency”; then it says that “godliness accompanied with contentment is great and abundant gain.” Paul, by the Spirit, further writes, “For we brought nothing into the world, and obviously we cannot take anything out of the world; But if we have food and clothing, with these we shall be content (satisfied).

But those who crave to be rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish (useless, godless) and hurtful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction and miserable perishing” (1 Timothy 6:7-9 AMPC).

This is the ordeal of those who struggle to be rich. But you shouldn’t get into that dilemma as a child of God, because being born again, you’ve entered into a life of contentment. You’ve ceased from your struggles and the glory of God now works within you.

The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 8:9, “For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.” And in Proverbs 10:22, it says, “The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.” This is your life as a child of God! God’s inherent blessing in your life is the basis for your riches.

Your prosperity is inherited through the Spirit, because you’re the seed of Abraham. In Christ, you have entered into God’s rest. You no longer worry over your rent and other bills. As Abraham’s seed, you’re ever aglow, full of praise and giving glory to God.

Function from a place of inward sufficiency, and operate from a vantage position of rest and satisfaction, irrespective of circumstances. No matter the situation, be full of joy; continue to praise, serve the Lord, and delight yourself in Him. He’ll create the opportunities for you to keep making progress from glory to glory.

CONFESSION

Dear Lord Jesus, I acknowledge you as the Lord of my life; you’re the Lord over my choices, desires, plans, and purposes. Always and at all times, I function from a place of inward sufficiency, and operate from a vantage position of rest and satisfaction, irrespective of circumstances. Hallelujah!

#AFFIRMATIONTRAIN

I affirm that the anointing of the Spirit of God is at work in me. I am powered and enabled by the Spirit on every side to do greater things.

Everywhere I go, and in everything that I put my hands to do; I am a success. Irrespective of what is happening around the world, I can’t think of failing!

I can’t comprehend failure! I do not fail, FAIL! ME! NEVER!! I DON’T FAIL! It’s not consistent with my nature. I am a success!!!

The wisdom of God is at work in me mightily. I can’t think otherwise because the word of God has given me a mentality!

I have the mentality of a CHAMPION. Hallelujah! I am in God’s place for my life, and He has perfected all that concerns me!

Even now, He is causing all things to work together for my good. By the reason of my fellowship and partnership with the Holy Spirit,

He has made me a distributor of eternal verities to my world. No man or institution can place a limit on me because greater is He that is in me, than he that is in the world.

Angels have been dispatched for my favour right now. The word of God is producing results for me, in every area of my life…even in my ministry as a soul winner!

God’s blessings have overshadowed me… They have gone ahead of me to make every unpleasant path, unpleasant days to become pleasant. Glory to God!

God bless you

Mum and son 'caught having sex' by son's wife face 20 years in jail

A mother and her son were allegedly caught having sex by the man's wife and the couple could now face 20 years in jail for incest.

Tony L Lavoie, from Fitchburg, Massachusetts, was allegedly caught having sex with his mum Cheryl Lavoie, 64, in May earlier this year.

Police were called to reports of a disturbance and the responding officer was greeted by a cousin of the wife of Tony.

The cousin then told the officer Tony's wife had called her about walking in on her husband having sex with his mother before calling 911, reports Sentinel & Enterprise.

The officer then reportedly spoke to the mum and son to acknowledge they had consensual sex relations.

It is alleged they both said it was the first time it had happened, reports add.

The police officer says Tony said: "I don’t know. It just happened."

It is further alleged Tony told the officer he wanted treatment for this, the officer said.

After asking Cheryl the same question, she allegedly answered that they had gotten closer in the last few months and it happened after they began kissing.

After talking to everyone involved, the officer decided there was enough evidence to charge the mother and son with incest.

They were given a summons to appear in court on August 20 with a felony.

They were read the charges in court and ordered to stay away from each other.

They both pleaded not guilty, court records show.

They will return on October 27 for a pre-trial hearing.

According to the state's general statutes, someone convicted of incest can face up to 20 years behind bars.

A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Chisom Promise Dike, has asked Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, to keep his car gift and repair the long abandoned roads in his constituency.

Governor Wike had presented a gift of SUV Jeeps to all members of the National Assembly from the state.

But Chisom Dike declined the offer, citing the poor state of the roads in his constituency which have became an eyesore.

The Rep member, who is from Oyigbo Local Government, said roads in the area are in decrepit state and asked for government intervention to rehabilitate the roads.

He appealed to the governor to look into his plea and construct Oyigbo roads.

Speaking after the occasion, Mr Mayor Ubani, an indigene of the affected LGA commended the Rep member:
“I appreciate and
commend this gesture as words are few to extend my humble thanks to him for speaking up for us.

“The Governor has abandoned and forsaken the Oyigbo People and have just prioritize the development of his LGA and it’s environ as Paramount”.

Nigeria’s oil sector suffers 6.63% decline amid production cuts

Nigeria’s oil sector suffers 6.63% decline amid production cuts

August 26, 2020

Amid the collapse of oil prices and demand, Nigeria’s oil and gas sector saw its contribution to the economy tumble in the second quarter of this year as it recorded negative growth.

For the first time in more than three years, the nation’s economy shrank in Q2 2020 as the Gross Domestic Product fell by 6.10 per cent, compared to a growth of 1.87 per cent in the previous quarter.

The NBS, in its GDP report for the second quarter of the year, said the oil sector, which grew by 5.06 per cent in Q1, declined by 6.63 per cent year-on-year in Q2, indicating a decrease of 13.80 per cent compared to the same period of 2019.

“The oil sector contributed 8.93 per cent to total real GDP in Q2 2020, down from figures recorded in the corresponding period of 2019 and the preceding quarter, where it contributed 8.98 per cent and 9.50 per cent respectively,” it said.

The NBS said the average daily oil production in the country fell to 1.81 million barrels per day in Q2 from 2.07 million bpd in the previous quarter and 2.02 million bpd in Q2 2019.

The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, known as OPEC+, agreed in April to an output cut to offset a slump in demand and prices caused by the coronavirus crisis.

They decided to cut supply by a record 9.7 million bpd for May and June but the deal was extended in July by one month.

Under the April deal, Nigeria was expected to cap its production at 1.41 million bpd in May and June but the country overproduced during the period.

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry attributed the low level of crude production in the period under review to OPEC+ production cut agreement aimed at rebalancing the oil market.

The LCCI said, “We also note that the economy experienced stockpiles of unsold crude cargoes particularly in April and early May, due to collapse in crude demand from Asia and Europe.

“In addition to these, the steep contraction was also fuelled by weakening oil prices witnessed in the quarter. We note that oil prices averaged $33 per barrel in Q2 2020 compared to $51 per barrel in the first quarter.”

The OPEC+ production cuts have helped lift the price of the international oil benchmark, Brent crude, from a low of around $16 per barrel in April. It stood at $45.91 per barrel as of 6:45pm Nigeria time on Tuesday.

The Director-General, Budget Office of the Federation, Ben Akabueze, had said in May that the nation’s oil revenues had declined by nearly 90 per cent amid the slump in prices caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

He noted that prior to the oil price decline, the Nigerian economy was already fragile and vulnerable, with sluggish growth, low revenue to GDP ratio, constrained fiscal space, among others.

According to him, oil and gas represents only about 10 per cent of Nigeria’s GDP, but accounts for about 50 per cent of government revenues and over 90 per cent of export earnings.

The contribution of the power sector to the economy also suffered a decline in Q2.
According to the NBS, the electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply sector recorded a year-on-year growth of 8.64 per cent in Q2 2020, down from the 29.75 per cent growth rate recorded in same period of 2019 and 17.51 per cent in Q1 2020.

It said, “The contribution of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply to nominal GDP in second quarter 2020 was 0.92 per cent, higher than the contribution made in the corresponding quarter of 2019 at 0.82 per cent and higher with its contribution of 0.38 per cent in the quarter before.”

“In real terms, however, the sector declined by –3.00 per cent in Q2 2020, a decrease from the growth rate of 0.43 per cent recorded in the same quarter of 2019. When compared to the immediate past quarter, this was a decrease of –0.69 per cent.”

Quote:A total of 331,003 workers who lost their jobs have withdrawn N116.87bn from their Retirement Savings Accounts under the Contributory Pension Scheme.

This amounted to 25 per cent of the total balance in their RSAs with Pension Fund Administrators as of the end of the third quarter of 2019.

The National Pension Commission disclosed this in its third quarter 2019 report, which was released on Monday.

Part of the report read, “Approval was granted for payment of N3.67bn to 6,862 RSA holders who were under the age of 50 years and were disengaged from work and unable to secure another job within four months of disengagement.

“The cumulative total number of RSA holders who were paid benefits for temporary loss of job was 331,003 and were paid a total of N116.88bn, being 25 per cent of the balances of their RSAs as prescribed by the Pension Reform Act 2014.

“A further analysis showed that the private sector accounted for 95.17 per cent of those who benefitted from these payments while the public sector accounted for 4.83 per cent.”

In the report, PenCom said it sustained its effort at collaborating with social partners to drive compliance with the provisions of the PRA 2014 by the organised private sector.

The commission said it continued its engagement with state governments on the implementation of the CPS.

It also said it maintained its effort to enlighten and educate informal sector workers of the enormous advantages of the Micro Pension Plan.

During the quarter under review, the commission said it transited from the existing Contributor Registration System to the Enhanced Contributor Registration System.

The ECRS is an electronic platform for the submission of requests PFAs for the registration of contributors and issuance of Personal Identification Numbers.

Quote:Man shot dead in Ibadan after withdrawing N446,000

One Taoreed Akano was shot dead in Ibadan, on Monday, by suspected armed robbers.

In the incident which occurred at about 1.20 pm opposite Oyo State Environmental Task Force office, Agodi, Akano was trailed on a bike from a Guaranty Trust bank in Bodija after he had gone to make two withdrawals of N150,000 and N296,000.

Noticing that he was being trailed, Akano was said to have swiftly turned onto the Secretariat to Government House road but the two armed robbers on a bike fired shots to dispossess Akano of the money while also making away with the victim’s Bajaj motorcycle.

When Tribune Online got to scene of the incident, the bullet used on Akano by the armed robbers was seen on the blood-smeared road as well as the withdrawal slips and a palm sandal.

Some staff of the state Environmental Task Force rushed Akano to Adeoyo state hospital, Yemetu, where he gave up the ghost.

Oyo Police Public Relations Officer, Gbenga Fadeyi, who confirmed the incident, said Akano’s corpse had been deposited at Adeoyo hospital’s morgue.

He further disclosed that two mobile phones and the sum of N90,000 was recovered from the late Akano.

He, however, said the police was on the trail of the hoodlums while urging residents of Ibadan to assist with credible information.

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday ordered that a 19-year-old man, Ismaila Mustapha, be remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre, for raping his neighbour’s three daughters.

The Prosecutor, ASP Bisi Ogunleye, while presenting the case urged that the matter be referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.
Ogunleye told the court that Mustapha committed the offence sometime in March at his residence.
He alleged that Mustapha defiled three sisters.

According to him, the offence contravened the provisions of Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

However, Magistrate Ejiro Kubeinje, who rejected the plea of the accused, ordered that he be remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the case file to the DPP for advice.

South-West Governments Kick Against IGP Determining Amotekun’s Structure
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-26-2020, 04:22 PM - No Replies

Quote:The state governments in the south-west say Mohammed Adamu, inspector-general of police, should not be allowed to determine the structure of Amotekun.

The Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN), a commission set up by the south-west governments, said this in reaction to comments credited to Garba Shehu, a presidential spokesman.

In an interview on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme, on Tuesday, Shehu was quoted to have said the structure of the security outfit would be determined by the IGP.Amotekun was established by the govts in the south-west in response to rising insecurity in the region.

In response to Shehu’s comments, Seye Oyeleye, DAWN director-general, said Amotekun would only be guided by the laws passed in the south-west states. Oyelele said in a federal system, states are allowed to have their security outfits as long as they are backed up by laws.

“The houses of assembly in the six states in the south-west have passed laws to guide the operations of Amotekun in their states. I don’t know what he (Shehu) meant except he is saying that the order of the inspector-general of police supersedes the states’ laws,” PUNCH quoted the director-general as saying.

“Amotekun is guided by the states’ laws. The setting up of community policing should not in any way disturb the operations of Amotekun. In any federal system, there are multi-layers of policing and the more the merrier; Nigeria needs policing at different layers.

“The operations of Amotekun are guided by the laws duly passed by the houses of assembly in the six states in the region and the bills were assented to by the governors.

“When I read what was credited to Garba Shehu, I found it strange. The Ondo state Amotekun is fully operational. Even Garba Shehu contradicted himself while saying this. He said, on the one hand, the IG would supervise Amotekun, and on the other hand, he said Amotekun was guided by individual state laws.”Oyeleye said community policing cannot be controlled by a single person in Abuja.

“We are operating a federal structure and Abuja should concentrate on its own community policing. I don’t want to believe that they are setting up their community policing structure to undermine what any state is doing,” he said.

Hundreds Of Thousands Flee US Coast Ahead Of Hurricane Laura (Photos)

[Image: 12207681_8_jpeg_jpegf57af6b8fd8f06ce13930af436ac692f]

In the largest U.S. evacuation of the pandemic, more than half a million people were ordered to flee the Gulf Coast on Tuesday as Laura strengthened into a hurricane that forecasters said could slam Texas and Louisiana with ferocious winds, heavy flooding and the power to push seawater miles inland.

More than 385,000 residents were told to flee the Texas cities of Beaumont, Galveston and Port Arthur, and another 200,000 were ordered to leave low-lying Calcasieu Parish in southwestern Louisiana, where forecasters said as much as 13 feet (4 meters) of storm surge topped by waves could submerge whole communities.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said Laura is shaping up to look a lot like Hurricane Rita did 15 years ago when it ravaged southwest Louisiana.

“We’re going to have significant flooding in places that don’t normally see it,” he said.

Ocean water was expected to push onto land along more than 450 miles (724 kilometers) of coast from Texas to Mississippi. Hurricane warnings were issued from San Luis Pass, Texas, to Intracoastal City, Louisiana, and storm surge warnings from the Port Arthur, Texas, flood protection system to the mouth of the Mississippi River.

The evacuations could get even bigger if the storm’s track veers to the east or west, said Craig Fugate, the former head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Fearing that people would not evacuate in time, Edwards said those in southwest Louisiana need to be where they intend to ride out Laura by noon Wednesday, when the state will start feeling the storm’s effects.

Officials urged people to stay with relatives or in hotel rooms to avoid spreading the virus that causes COVID-19. Buses were stocked with protective equipment and disinfectant, and they would carry fewer passengers to keep people apart, Texas officials said.

The clashes of 5 June and 11 June 2020 within the Atyap Chiefdom of Zangon-Kataf LGA and in parts of Kauru LGA triggered the latest cycle of violent strife in parts of southern Kaduna. The 24-hour curfew imposed on all the four affected LGAs has been relaxed to night-time curfews

The Agwatyap expressed his gratitude to Malam Nasir @elrufai for encouraging him about a month ago to initiate the dialogue among the communities in his chiefdom for a peace and reconciliation process

The governor commended the Atyap, Fulani and Hausa communities of Atyap Chiefdom in Zangon-Kataf LGA for the successful peace and reconciliation summit held on Saturday, 22 August 2020.

“All who seek to replace violent strife with harmony can be assured of the unstinting support of the state government for peace and concord in all our communities.” -Malam Nasir @elrufai

“This government has been clear and insistent since 2015 that the ultimate guarantee of peace is the willingness of communities to live in peace and harmony, and their resolve to settle all differences by strictly lawful means.”

This community support is as important as the investments we have made in stationing and maintaining detachments of the military and police in southern Kaduna.

Malam Nasir @elrufai assured the Agwatyap that the state government supports the quest for new layouts to encourage people from different communities to live side by side. He said the road project requested will be undertaken, and the question of options for youths addressed.

“I call on every person of goodwill to support the Atyap Chiefdom’s strong efforts to bring its communities together and stop the bloodshed. Everyone should reject the temptation to take laws into their hands, but instead submit all grievances to the lawful authorities”

Dear Nigerians,

@NNPCgroup has spent a total of N648.82BN on pipeline maintenance in 5.5years

This is more than the capital allocation to the Health Sector (N617.56BN) in 13years

Pipeline vandalism is bleeding the country dry.

This is preposterous!

CAMA: Niger Delta Youths Condemn And Reject Amended Act
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-26-2020, 02:24 PM - No Replies

Quote:Youths under the auspices of Niger Delta Youth Congress, NDYC, Monday, condemned and rejected the recently signed Company and Allied Matter Act, CAMA 2020 into law by President Muhammadu Buhari, repealing the CAMA Act 1990.

This was contained in a statement signed by the National Coordinator, NDYC, Comrade Israel Uwejeyan, describing it as anti-Christian.

The statement also demanded Buhari to have a rethink to suspend the CAMA law he assented if Churches are not exempted, and pointed that government should not dabble into affairs of the church in order not to go against divine authority.

It will be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari on August 7, 2020, assented to the CAMA 2020, which repeals and replaces the CAMA, 1990. The controversial section 839 (1) and (2) provides that religious bodies and non-governmental organisations will be strictly regulated by the Registrar-General of Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC, and a supervising minister.

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN had condemned CAMA, 2020, and called for its immediate suspension. The President of CAN, Rev Dr Samson Ayokunle, said, “The law, to say the least, is unacceptable, ungodly, reprehensible and an ill-wind that blows no one any good. It is a time bomb waiting to explode.”

Various groups also have earlier condemned and demanded expunging the provision of CAMA 2020 that affects churches, which include the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, who described the controversial CAMA, 2020 as a declaration of war on Christianity and also alleged that it was an agenda to Islamise Nigeria by another means.

The Christian Rights Agenda, CRA, in its statement called on churches not to accept CAMA 2020, which is described as an anti-Christ law from the pit of hell.

The statement reads in part, “The Niger Delta Youth Congress, NDYC, succinctly rejects with outmost clarity the recent CAMA 2020 anti-Christianity law assented by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“We strongly condemn the anti-Christianity CAMA 2020 law and vow to resist it with all we have got because religious leaders were not ordained by any Government and cannot be removed by such.”

The statement also called on its members and Nigerians in general to resist the CAMA 2020, “We call on all our members, youths across the nation and well-meaning Nigerians to speak up against this law as it is a ticking time bomb.

“We strongly urge the Federal Government to concentrate on the security of lives and properties order than delve into matters of uttermost sensitivity that it can possibly avoid.

“We have watched with disdain the daily massacres of lives and destruction of properties by killer herdsmen, bandits and the Boko Haram terrorists and have hoped that the Buhari-led government matches words with actions.”

It also demanded that Buhari exempt Churches from the law, “We strongly demand that the President with immediate effect, suspend the recent CAMA law he assented to until Churches are exempted from it in order to avert chaos as we cannot leave the control of our Churches to any Government.”

Supreme Court’s Decision On Female Inheritance Divides Igbos
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion

Quote:Supreme Court's decision on female inheritance divides Igbo

…Female children not second class — Bishop Nwokolo

[i]…Ruling cannot abolish the tradition and custom of Igbos — Osisi Itodo
…Judgment good but communities still have custom and tradition — Igwe Okolo
…Court judgment bastardizes culture and tradition of Igboland — Ugwu
…I agree with the judgment completely — Ezenagu, PG, NUF
…Ends age-long man’s inhumanity to man — Emelobe
…Ruling against Igbo tradition – Abia monarch[/i

ENUGU—THE Supreme Court in a landmark decision, has upheld the right of a female child to inherit properties of her father. By this decision, the apex court has voided the Igbo age-long law and custom which forbid a female child from inheriting her late father’s estate.

The Supreme Court voided this tradition and custom on the grounds that it is discriminatory and conflicts with the provision of the constitution.

The Supreme Court held that the practice conflicted with section 42(1)(a) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution.

The land mark judgment was on the appeal marked: SC.224/2004 filed by Mrs. Lois Chituru Ukeje (wife of the late Lazarus Ogbonna Ukeje) and their son, Enyinnaya Lazarus Ukeje against Ms. Gladys Ada Ukeje (the deceased’s daughter).

“Gladys had sued the deceased’s wife and son before the Lagos High Court, claiming to be one of the deceased’s children and sought to be included among those to administer their deceased father’s estate.

The trial court found that she was a daughter to the deceased and that she was qualified to benefit from the estate of their father who died intestate in Lagos in 1981.

The Court of Appeal, Lagos to which Mrs. Lois Ukeje and Enyinnaya Ukeje appealed, upheld the decision of the trial court, prompting them to appeal to the Supreme Court.

In its judgment, the Supreme Court held that the Court of Appeal, Lagos was right to have voided the Igbo native law and custom that disinherit female children. Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour, who read the lead judgment, held that: “No matter the circumstances of the birth of a female child, such a child is entitled to an inheritance from her late father’s estate.

“Consequently, the Igbo customary law, which disentitles a female child from partaking in the sharing of her deceased father’s estate is breach of Section 42(1) and (2) of the Constitution, a fundamental rights provision guaranteed to every Nigerian.

“The said discriminatory customary law is void as it conflicts with Section 42(1) and (2) of the Constitution. In the light of all that I have been saying, the appeal is dismissed. In the spirit of reconciliation, parties are to bear their own costs,” Justice Rhodes-Vivour said.

Justices Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, Clara Bata Ogunbiyi, Kumai Bayang Aka’ahs and John Inyang Okoro, who were part of the panel that heard the appeal, agreed with the lead judgment.

The judgment has evoked mixed reactions from Ndigbo, particularly traditional rulers who are the custodian of the tradition and culture, as well as church leaders.

It is a welcome development – Bishop Nwokolo

In his reaction, the Bishop, Diocese on the Niger, Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Owen Nwokolo described the judgment as a welcome development. He said that female children are not second class citizens and should not be treated like one.

“Female children have and should be accorded the same rights given to their male counterparts and therefore should not be discriminated against.

“This is not the first time the Supreme Court has given this judgment. Some years ago, the Supreme Court gave similar judgment but we are happy and we thank the Supreme Court for upholding the same judgment and there is no going back in females inheriting their fathers’ property.

“Families should put the judgment in practice and female children should stand up and claim their right. It is not only Supreme Court judgment but God given right and they should take that right”.

Prof. Uzodinma Nwala-led Alaigbo Development Foundation, ADF, also welcomed the decision, saying, “in today’s world, daughters have proved their mettle in bringing sustainability, honour and dignity to their families. Some of them have played the role of bread-winners for their father’s houses.

“So, it would have amounted to great injustice to continue to deny them the right of inheritance. They should be entitled to a fair share of their family wealth whether married or single.”

Supreme Court ruling cannot abolish the tradition of Igbos – Igwe Itodo

However, a prominent monarch in Nsukka and the grand patron of Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, and the traditional ruler of Aji autonomous community in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, Igwe Simeon Osisi Itodo, said the Supreme Court ruling cannot abolish the tradition and custom of the Igbos.

Itodo said that any attempt to implement such law in Igboland would provoke chaos and skirmishes among various communities.

He argued that the custom is unique to the people of South-East Nigeria and should not be touched.

“There are traditions which had existed before the law. Before the emergence of law courts, Igbos have their tradition and custom which cannot be wiped out because of Supreme Court ruling.

“There are so many things we have in common which cannot be stopped because of court verdict.

“We are not against that ruling but we would not abolish our customs and traditions which all of us met. You can imagine a married woman coming back to her father to share his property with the sons.

“We would not allow it because it would breed chaos and troubles in our communities. If there are customs that allow such inheritance, let the people continue the practice but it won’t work in Igboland.

“In India, women pay the dowry but the reverse is the case here. We would not abolish our unique customs because of court ruling,” the monarch said.

Custom unfair to Igbo women – Igwe Nnamani
But another prominent monarch and the traditional ruler of Likke Iheaka autonomous community in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State, Igwe Christopher Nnamani disagreed with Itodo.

Nnamani said the custom is unfair to the Igbo women and called on the states’ Houses of Assembly in the South-East to make laws that would domesticate the ruling of the Supreme Court on the matter.

He said that some fathers in their wisdom share their properties to their children while alive irrespective of their sexes, saying that the custom reduced the female children to slavish status in Igboland.

“This unfair treatment of female children does not happen in Northern or Western parts of Nigeria. This explains why females with affluence lord it over their male counterparts in Igboland when they remember the injustice they have suffered in the past.

“If a male becomes the eldest man in his community, he would be entitled to some privileges, which may come in form of royalties but the reverse is the case for the women in Igboland. The challenge is how to implement it now because it is an old tradition in South-East Nigeria.”

For the chairman, Enugu State Association of Town Union Presidents, Chief Paully Eze, “any custom which shows to be manifestly unlawful should be expunged.” Eze, a lawyer, said it is wrong to deny any child inheritance because of sex consideration.

“Any custom that did not meet the test of time, that is, when it is manifestly unlawful should be expunged. I stand strongly with that pronouncement. Nsukka High Court has earlier pronounced it before it was affirmed by the Supreme Court.

“It is very much unfair to deny females right of inheritance of their fathers’ properties. Because it is a new law, it would definitely bring problems in terms of implementation but with time, we would get accustomed to it. It is already causing ripples in my community,” he said.

Chief Augustine Uzochukwu from Ihiala Council Area of Anambra State hailed the judgment just as Igwe Patrick Okolo of Nkpunano community, Nsukka, Enugu State insisted that the Supreme Court judgment must be obeyed by every community in Igboland.

Okolo, however, posited that Nri ancient community stands as the best community to interpret the judgment, “though we concur with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Supreme Court judgment should be upheld in principle in some quarters of Igboland while traditional unwritten constituency holds supreme in most quarters of Igboland.”

Judgment completely right – Ezenagu, PG, NUF

In his reaction, the President- General of Ndigbo United Forum, NUF, Chief Godson Ezenagu, commended the decision of the Supreme Court, saying that granting females access to their fathers’ property is natural, adding that it would give them a sense of belonging in the society.

“According to Igbo tradition, the female child inheritance does not happen and now that the Supreme Court has ruled that they are entitled to that, by natural justice and conscience, I agree with them completely.

“Granting them access to their biological father’s properties is a natural thing. Sometimes, customs handed over from generation to generation can be awkward and can be discontinued.

“For denying them that, they are put in serious jeopardy; they are molested at home and also in their marital home. Their partaking in sharing of property will make them more comfortable than the situation in which they found themselves. That is what is supposed to happen naturally.

“All animals are equal and at the same time, all children are equal. We shouldn’t because of custom deny the female child her natural right.

“So, it is a welcome development and I am sure all people of good faith will support it and advocate that even the ones that have not been done or already done could be revisited. Involving them is the best thing ever, even though they may not get equal share but it will give them some leverage”, Ezenagu said and wished that the same court abolish the practice of a married woman bearing her father’s name in her husband’s home.

“That is the advantage and the disadvantage of the ruling will be that most women may not like to go into marriage because their father is rich and has a lot of property to benefit.

“Whether your husband is rich or poor, you will leave your own family to your husband’s family. Once you are married, you change your family name to your husband’s name. Some women are now attaching their family name to their husband’s name. I think it is wrong.

“I believe the same law that abolished Igbo customs denying female child rights of inheritance will also abolish it. Most educated women are doing it but it is wrong”, he said.

Also reacting to the court decision, Chief Augustine Emelobe, a renowned Chemical Engineer, said that it has removed the unjust and unfair treatment on the female children.

“I support the verdict of the Supreme Court. Children are children irrespective of whether they are male or female. I have always had the notion that it is unjust and unfair on the part of the female children.

“I applaud the Supreme Court as the last hope of the common man in this age-long man’s inhumanity to man.”

“I totally agree with the Supreme Court that the Igbo law and custom, which forbids female children from inheriting their late father’s estate on the grounds that it is discriminatory and conflicts with the provision of the constitution.”

For the President-General of the Coalition of South-East Youth Leaders, Goodluck Egwu Ibem, the Supreme Court decision is a welcome development. According to him, it is a wonderful defense of the girl-child who before now, has been treated as a second class citizen in our society.

“She is seen as the property of her husband who loses all forms of rights once she gets married.

“A man who has only female children in our society loses his rights to certain privileges like being a traditional ruler or his inheritance in his own father’s compound. The situation before now has been very ugly,” he lamented.

“We deeply appreciate the Supreme Court for this landmark judgment that has brought back the confidence of the girl-child in our society today. Communities that

“We are not in the South South and South-West tradition or the Northern part of Nigeria. But in South east it is not the practice that the female child inherit the Father’s property.

“Rather the father can give the female child one or two rooms in case she comes with the husband and the children.

“May be after the ceremony for which they came home they will go back. So, the female child inheriting the father’s properties will be a difficult thing to practice as part of our tradition in Igbo land.

“Just imagine, after the father of the House dies and they say that the most senior of his children who is a female child should inherit the family house of the father in the village.

“What you see we are doing is the steps laid for us by our forefathers. Nobody will built a house in the village and say that his female child will come and stay there.

“By the time, they want to implement this law in Igbo land it will cost a very big problem it will even get to a appoint of those children trying to eliminate themselves if not managed very well.”

“Yes, i can do that to assist my daughter and her husband and children so that they can live a better life if that is what they need to succeed.”

Heavy flood might hit FCT, Bayelsa, Rivers, others from Sept 6 – NIHSA

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has predicted that heavy flood might hit the Federal Capital Territory, Rivers state, Bayelsa, and others beginning from September 6.

Disclosing this to newsmen on Tuesday, August 25, the  Director-General of NIHSA, Clement Nze, said the Middle Niger of the River Niger Basin is currently flooded and the magnitude of flood from that area is expected to arrive in Nigeria through Kebbi State from September 6, 2020.

He said parts of 275 local government areas in the 36 states of the federation, including Abuja, were within the moderately probable flood risk areas, while the remaining 397 local government areas were within the low probable flood risks areas.

Nze said at least 102 local government areas in 28 states fall within the highly probable flood risk areas. He added that River Niger Basin covered nine countries of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Cote D’Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Niger and Nigeria which is at the lowest portion of the basin.

Quote: “The red alert points to imminent river flooding in Nigeria. Both the Kainji and Jebba dams have commenced spilling water downstream.

This means that once the upper catchment of the basin gets flooded, Nigeria should be prepared to experience flooding incidents.

As of today, the Middle Niger of the Niger Basin made up of Niger, Benin, Burkina Faso and part of Mali, have been flooded. The flood levels at the hydrological stations monitored in Niamey and Malanville (Benin Republic) have got to the red alert zone.

Latest information received by the NIHSA from the regional Niger Basin Authority headquarters in Niamey had it that as of Sunday, August 23, 2020, the flood level of the River Niger monitored in Niamey was 6.60 metres.”

He said with this development, these state namely: Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Nasarawa, Kogi, Anambra, Delta, Edo, Rivers, and Bayelsa, might experience heavy flooding from around September 6, 2020

100 Nigerian Students Killed In Northern Cyprus Universities - NiDCOM

Quote:Over 100 Nigerian students killed in four years – NiDCOM

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission said on Monday that no fewer than 100 Nigerian students studying in Northern Cyprus have been killed between 2016 and 2020.

The commission lamented that the Nigerian students were killed in mysterious circumstances while their assailants were never prosecuted for the crime.

A statement on Monday by NiDCOM said the 100 victims included 25-year-old Ibrahim Bello, son of Justice Amina Bello of the Kaduna State High Court.

“Other victims include Kennedy Taomwabwa Dede, 28, student of Eastern Mediterranean University killed on February 1, 2018; Walshak Augustine Ngok, a student of Marine Engineering at Near East University, murdered on April 19, 2019,” the statement said.

The statement, signed by NiDCOM media officer, Gabriel Odu, was titled, “Death of Ibrahim Bello: NiDCOM demands justice, urges students to avoid Northern Cyprus universities.”

According to the statement, Justice Bello was at the commission’s office in Abuja to plead with the Federal Government to assist her in bringing the murderers of her son to justice.

Ibrahim, a student at the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, was killed in suspicious circumstances by unknown persons in October last year.

But the authorities claimed the third year Civil Engineering student of Girne American University in Girne (Kyrenia), committed suicide by jumping from a seven-storey building.

Presenting a petition on the alleged murder to the Chairman, NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in Abuja on Monday, the bereaved mother said her demand for justice was not only for her son but also for other Nigerian students who had died mysteriously in the Girne American University Girne (Kyrenia), and other institutions in Northern Cyprus.

NiDCOM said in its statement that the judge narrated how the 25-year-old was allegedly murdered and the act covered up by the authorities in Northern Cyprus and the university administration which claimed that his death was a suicide, noting that the deceased fell from a seven-storey building.

Justice Bello insisted that the report should be investigated and all those found culpable should be prosecuted “as there was nothing to show that my son committed suicide.”

The judge said hours before her son was killed, she spoke with him and he expressed fear about his safety in the university environment.

She stated, “I don’t believe it was an accident or a suicide as I went to Cyprus barely 24 hours after it happened and got to the mortuary where there was no scratch or wound on his body.

“I suspected foul play that my son was killed as the school was nonchalant in breaking the news to me on my arrival there.”

Justice Bello further disclosed that hours before her son died, he had sent her a WhatsApp message saying, “ Mama, please, I want to come back home. Wallahi, if I stay here, I will just die here without anybody batting an eyelid. I just need to come back home. Mama please, try to understand that this isn’t the place for me.”

Dabiri-Erewa called on parents to be wary of sending their wards to Northern Cyprus “as the country is not recognised by the United Nations except the Republic of Turkey,” adding that Nigeria had no diplomatic ties with that country.

She assured Bello that NiDCOM would work with the Ministry of Justice, the Nigerian Mission in Turkey and other relevant agencies to ensure justice was done.

Chloroquine kills Coronavirus in early stage - NAFDAC DG

Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye has disclosed that Chloroquine kills Coronavirus in its early stage.

Adeyeye who also revealed that reliable researches and reports shows that Remdesivir kills the virus at late stages, added that the cost for treating people with chloroquine was way cheaper than with Remdesivir.

Speaking in a virtual news conference in Abuja on Tuesday August 25, the NAFDAC DG noted that countries in West Africa like Ghana, Togo, and Senegal have also embraced the clinical use of Chloroquine for treatment.

She said;

Quote:“In March 20, this year, just before the lockdown, I had a press briefing. At that time, people did not understand what clinical trial treatment meant. Once they hear treatment, they think you can use it anyhow. But clinical trial treatment is a research study to see whether the drug will work or not.

“In the press briefing, I said I was going through literature to see what others have done and I saw in a particular literature a reliable publication of an article about Chloroquine and Remdesivir (that time nobody was even talking of Remdesivir). This was February of this year.

“They said in the cell culture, Remdesivir and Chloroquine killed COVID-19 viruses, that is, invitro – in the laboratory. But you cannot translate that to humans unless a clinical trial is done.

“I kept looking. About two weeks or so later in early March (this was at a time when COVID-19 was at its peak in China); there was a publication where 100 patients were treated with Chloroquine across ten hospitals in six cities, including Wuhan. It said that all of them recovered from the symptoms.

They called it that time pneumonia symptoms.
“In the cells, in the lab, Remdesivir and Chloroquine killed COVID-19. At what stage would they be more effective? We didn’t know at that point. Now, we are realising that Chloroquine is effective at the early stage."

Adeyeye also recalled how Sanjay Gupta, an American neurosurgeon, medical reporter, and writer, mentioned that Chloroquine can be used prophylactically.

She added;

Quote:“Remember, Remdesivir and Chloroquine work in the cells. Chloroquine was proven to work in 100 patients. We did not know at that time that the disease has about four phases – pre-exposure stage, early stage, mild stage, and the severe stage.

“Now we are talking of Remdesivir. We met with Gilead – the maker of Remdesivir about two months ago and they came. They said they have licensed their drug to five Indian companies and one Pakistani company. To treat an average patient will cost about $10 with Chloroquine and cost about $2,500 with Remdesivir.

“When we now got the profile of Remdesivir, what was recorded in literature and from the manufacturer was that Remdesivir doesn’t work at the early stage. It works at the late stage. But when viruses are in the tube in the laboratory, you won’t know which is late or which is early. Both killed them. We now understand that it is not only one drug that can be effective for COVID-19, but it depends on the stage and the phases of the disease.”

Feyisola Dosumu 'Spartan' Kills Olatunji Oladeji In Ogun
User Avatar Forum: Other Stories
Posted by: Edoman - 08-26-2020, 09:09 AM - No Replies

Quote:Landlords and residents of Oluwatedo community, Ogere, in the Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, have started deserting their houses due to the continuous killing of people by a suspected serial killer, Feyisola Dosumu, aka Spartan.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the latest in the killing spree of the suspect was a community leader, Elder Olatunji Oladeji.

The 53-year-old Olatunji was said to be the Vice-Chairman of the Oluwatedo Community Development Association.

Olatunji’s son, Samuel, told our correspondent that his father had been living in the area for 30 years before he was killed on Friday, August 21, 2020.

He lamented that Dosumu butchered his father in the head and fled the scene.

Samuel stated, “My dad was returning from work and was about to enter the house when this man confronted him and hacked him to death. He butchered my father as if he were an animal. That was around 7.30pm. There was no disagreement between them. People saw him, but could not go near him.

“He has killed a lot of people in this community. Whenever he kills anyone and people go after him, he marks the faces of his pursuers and goes to kill them in their houses.

“About a month ago, he killed a nursing mother, Mummy Seun. He raped the woman and hacked her to death with a cutlass. My father and I carried the woman’s corpse from a mortuary to the place of burial. But my father did not say anything to warrant this senseless killing.”

Samuel, who vowed to leave the community, lamented that many landlords had been deserting their houses because of the suspect.

“Nobody can sleep with their two eyes closed again. He has turned this place to a horror community. The blood of many innocent people has been spilled,” he added.

A landlord, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the suspect had allegedly killed 15 residents since February 2020.

He alleged that Dosumu only went after settlers.

“He is an indigene of Ogere, but nobody knows where he lives. Once he kills anyone, he will run away. The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, and the Area Commander visited one month ago after he killed a nursing mother and another person. They promised to do something about him. In fact, it was Elder Olatunji, who addressed the CP and pleaded for help. But four days after the visit, everybody left and the man resumed the killing.

“We are tired. Whatever the government can do, they should do it before he finishes everybody.”

Apart from Ogere, the suspect had allegedly been terrorising residents of Iperu, the hometown of the state governor, Dapo Abidoun.

The suspect, alleged to be a notorious cultist, graduated from a polytechnic in Abeokuta.

He was said to have been admitted to the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, for treatment after he developed a mental problem.

Dosumu, however, escaped back to Ogere remains elusive to local vigilantes and security agents, and the police have declared him wanted.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident, adding that the police would soon get the suspect.

“We are seriously on his trial and any moment from now, we are going to get him. We have about five of our tactical teams in that place now looking for him. We will get him,” Oyeyemi stated.

FFK Responds To Daily Trust's Statement Condemning Him Over Clash With Reporter
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Edoman - 08-26-2020, 09:04 AM - Replies (1)

Femi Fani-Kayode has responded to the statement released by Daily Trust newspapers (Read here https://www.nairaland.com/6077180/fani-kayodes-attack-daily-trust-reporter) condemning him for clashing with one of their reporters, Eyo Charles, during a press conference in Calabar, Cross River state on Thursday, August 20.

Read his statement below

MY RESPONSE TO THE ASININE CLAIMS OF DAILY TRUST NEWSPAPER

"The Trust Newspaper, in their column titled, 'FANI-KAYODE'S ATTACK ON DAILY TRUST REPORTER: OUR STAND' has indulged in lies, deceit, double-standards and falsehood and written absolute crap. To put it mildly their claims are not only outrageous but also downright asinine.

The truth is that their reporter was sent to insult me, probably with their support and knowledge, and more likely than not he was paid to do it.

If it is true that he actually asked a question other than the insulting assertion that I attributed to him in my earlier statement they should produce the video clip of those questions.

There were over 30 journalists in the room and none of them can produce a clip of where he asked any questions.

He said only one thing and made only one assertion which was the following: "Well, we do not know who is bankrolling you".

That is all he said and outside of that he said NOTHING. I challenge the Trust to come out with any evidence to the contrary.

As regards their claim that he was physically threatened, again it is a lie from the pit of hell. I told him that if he tried such a thing ever again I would tell him off even harder than I was doing at the time after which he apologised and the matter was closed.

Outside of that I bear him no malice. If anyone approached or threatened him after the press conference as he has claimed it had nothing to do with me or my staff.

I did not send anyone to do so and neither do I believe in or indulge in physical threats or violence. If any of my staff ever did such a thing I would sack him on the spot once I see the evidence.

Given all that I cannot be held responsible for the safety of this rude young man because I do not know what he does or who else he may have insulted, robbed, cheated or offended.

I do not know whether he is a thief, a murderer, a rogue, a dumpster, a Yahoo boy or one of those morally bankrupt and shameful men that sleeps with other peoples wives. I do not know who may be after him if anyone at all and neither do I care. His present or future travails, if any, have absolutely nothing to do with me.

I can only say that I do not wish him any ill and that as far as I am concerned this matter is closed. I reported him to his boss, who I have known for many years and respect, Alhaji Yusuf Kabir, and that was it.

As for the management of Daily Trust Newspaper and its editors you should bury your heads in shame. Not only are you a bunch of liars but you have no decency or self-respect. If you were human beings you would have first asked my side of the story before going to press.

This is especially so since I had already reported the matter to your publisher. To say that I pose a risk to any of your staff's safety is not only laughable but also thoroughly irresponsible. I am a man of peace and I come in peace.

It would have been better for you if you asked your journalist who gave him the money to come and provoke and insult me.

Clearly he and those that sent him on this mission impossible got far more than they ever bargained for and I am more than happy with that.

I mean it from the bottom of my heart when I say may God judge you for your dirty lies. End of story"- FFK

Foreigners buy gold with arms in Zamfara — Governor Matawalle

Foreigners buy gold with arms in Zamfara — Governor Matawalle

Governor Bello Matawalle has announced that foreigners are buying gold and other precious mineral resources with arms in Zamfara state which he governs.

The Zamfara state Governor who disclosed this after presenting some gold bars and other precious stones mined in his State to President Muhammadu Buhari, said his administration decided to embrace the Presidential Artisanal Gold Mining Development Initiative to stop the criminal act being championed by illegal miners in the state.

Matawalle said;

Quote:“It’s very important to us as a government, particularly, the issue of insecurity, to know the root cause of insecurity. Zamfara state is blessed with many minerals resources and some people outside the country come in to buy gold and other precious stones and sometimes instead of paying people, they pay back with arms.

I did some investigations. So, the state government will be buying some of these minerals so that we can block that chain. So, now the state government is engaging the miners. We’ll be buying some of this gold from them with the limited resources we have. "

Commenting on the security situation in his state, Matawalle opposed the call for sack of the service chiefs who according to him need the support of all stakeholders.

He said;

Quote:“The narration has changed. You won’t be hearing of mass killings in the state because the security agencies are doing their best.

I equally advised the president that those that are calling for the sack of the service chiefs is not the solution. Let’s support the security, we as the governors, we have a big role to play. We just have to support the security agencies.

“If the governors are not serious, they can’t be able to achieve what they want. I advised the president that all those calling for the sack of the security chiefs, they should think of the best way to support them to perform better instead of sacking them, even if you sack them, you’re bringing another one. So, let us use the one that we have. We’ll support them as a government.

“My state now is at peace and everybody is aware. We’ve more than 3000 policemen going round the mining sites in order to protect the mining site. We’ve the security. It’s just for us as leaders to support them. I believe we’ll see a lot of changes in terms of security in this country.”

Police Shoot 19-Year-Old Boy For Impregnating A 17-Year-Old Girl In Rivers State

Quote:Unless three different surgeries are urgently conducted on the left leg of Ledesi Kote, a 19-year-old boy who was shot by a police officer for impregnating a girl, according to doctors ,the young man may lose the leg to amputation.

According to Kote, the father of the victim, He was in his compound in K. Dere community in Gokana local government area of Rivers State on Friday, August 21, 2020, around 7am, when a Sienna drove into his compound with about four armed police men.

“They went straight to my son’s room door and were banging and cocking guns. I approached them to inquire from them what my son did wrong that they were looking for him, but none of them answered me. It was one of them who angrily told me that my son impregnated a girl.”.

According to the victim’s father, the next thing he heard from the backyard of his house was a gunshot.

He said one of the officers shot his son on the leg simply because he impregnated a girl and went away with him, while he was bleeding profusely and hid him in a private hospital.

Comrade Karl Uchegbu, South-South Zonal Chairman of Civil Liberties Organizations quoted an unnamed human rights activist in the area as stating that, he and other lovers of justice took the father to the Rivers State Police Command headquarters on Moscow road in Port Harcourt, where an official complaint was laid down about what their officers did to an innocent boy, whose only crime was because he impregnated a girl.

Our Correspondent learnt that arrangements were made for the immediate transfer of the victim from the village to a better government owned hospital in Port Harcourt.

Another activist who witnessed the incident regretted that, ”until now, the officer who did this is yet to take full responsibility of the medications. The doctor said the victim will have to undergo three different surgeries or else he might be amputated. We want justice for this boy. It could be me or you tomorrow”.

At the time of filing this report, the Rivers State Police Command headquarters is yet to react to the incident, especially the allegation that a Police Officer shot a boy.

Mojisola Adeyeye: It Costs Two Million Naira To Destroy A Container Of Tramadol
User Avatar Forum: Market Place
Posted by: Edoman - 08-26-2020, 08:53 AM - No Replies

Quote:The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Mrs Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye has revealed that to destroy a container load of Tramadol cost the agency between N1m and N2m.

This is even as she revealed that NAFDAC has taken the fight against the importation of substandard and fake products to India and China, where two Clean Report Inspection (CRI) Agents were removed because they indulged in facilitating illicit drugs to Nigeria.

Disclosing this on Tuesday when she hosted a virtual media parley with the print media, the NAFDAC DG explained that for seven years when the agency was not at the ports, importers of fake and substandard drugs were having a field day bringing in dangerous products into the country.

According to Mrs Adeyeye, “Don’t forget that for seven years, we were not at the port and importers of dangerous drugs were having a field day. Our children were going wacko due to drug abuse that was almost becoming a normal thing in this country.

“In May of 2018, our officials returned to the ports and gave importers of these illicit drugs a run for their money. Many containers of Tramadol were impounded by NAFDAC and destroyed. To destroy a container of Tramadol, it costs around N1m to N2m.

“Importers of these illicit drugs, when it dawned on them that we are back at the ports, started diverting some of these shipments to neighbouring countries in the West African sub-region. We went after them in these countries and still seized their shipments.

As I speak, five containers of Tramadol meant for the Nigerian market are in the Benin Republic. The Nigerian Ambassador over there is currently making efforts to bring those consignments here for destruction. The NAFDAC Directorate at the port is up and running.

“There was a time I was in the United Kingdom (UK) for a family function and got alerted that 14 container shipment of Tramadol was on its way to Lagos. I quickly called our Port Directorate and alerted them to ensure those shipments do not enter the country.”

On what she met on ground when she resumed as NAFDAC DG, Adeyeye explained that ‘On resumption as NAFDAC DG, I was shocked at the state of decay in our laboratories all over the country.

We have seven laboratories nationwide, and many were in a state of rot. How can we certify drugs and foods when our labs are not properly equipped?

“As we speak, our laboratories have been given a facelift. Now we have some money to buy some detection devices, and this will reduce the numbers of goods that we need to take to the laboratory for examination.

“Last year, I was in India and China to examine some of their laboratories where goods meant for importation to Nigeria are tested.

In these countries, they have Clean Report Inspection (CRI) Agents who certify these products before they are shipped to Nigeria. We had to remove two of the CRI Agents because we found them culpable in allowing substandard drugs to come to Nigeria. We told them in China and India that we don’t want substandard goods in Nigeria anymore.”

HURIWA Blasts Buhari For Allowing Aisha, Others Embark On Medical Trip Abroad
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-26-2020, 08:49 AM - No Replies

Quote:Human Rights Writers Association Of Nigeria, HURIWA, has berated President Muhammadu Buhari for his failure to stop the members of his inner caucus from embarking on medical trips abroad.

According to the rights group, the President Muhammadu Buhari government has shown no interest into investing massively in reviving the moribund health sector despite the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic.

HURIWA also lamented Buhari’s lack of political will to set up a panel to investigate the allegations of corruption at the State House clinic.According to the rights group, the President Muhammadu Buhari government has shown no interest into investing massively in reviving the moribund health sector despite the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The group pointed out that annual budgetary allocation of the State House Clinic is a lot more than what is allocated to each of the 16 major teaching hospitals across the country with over a total of N13.59 billion having reportedly been budgeted for it since the administration came into being.

“A breakdown of the total budgetary provisions within this period showed that N3.94 billion, N3.87 billion and N3.20 billion were budgeted in 2015, 2016 and 2017, respectively. While in 2018, 2019 and 2020, the budgetary provisions dropped to N1.03 billion, N823.44 million and N723 million respectively,” HURIWA said in a statement to DAILY POST on Tuesday by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko.

“Despite these huge allocations it receives, the Clinic has left more to be desired as those the facility is meant to serve are still spending millions of taxpayers’ money to seek treatment in other private facilities within and outside the country on health matters that could be well managed here in the country, yet no panel of investigation has been set up to investigate the scandals and allegations of corruptions oozing out from there even as a bulk of the allegation had come from members of the first family.

“In 2017, the wife of the President; Aisha Buhari had attacked the management of the State House Clinic over poor equipment and non-availability of drugs. This attack by the Wife of the President had followed the earlier criticism by her daughter; Zara Buhari, who took to one of her social media accounts to criticise the Permanent Secretary of the State House; Jalal Arabi, for his inability to provide even Paracetamol tablets to the clinic despite a budget of N3 billion for the provision of drugs to the hospital.

“Although in October 2017, the House of Representatives said it would investigate the “deplorable condition” of the State House Clinic but till date the outcome of that inquiry remains unknown.

“Again, President Buhari in the build up to his election in 2015, had on his campaign trail, itemized the abolition of medical tourism as one of his key objectives in government.

“Although his administration officials vowed to put an end to the practice, Buhari has been Nigeria’s most prominent medical tourist. He has visited the United Kingdom for at least five medical trips since becoming president, including an extended stay of more than five months in 2017.

“According to the calculations made in one of the editions of Saturday Punch Newspaper, in the first three years of his first tenure from May 2015 to May 2019, President Buhari was outside the country for a combined 404 days (one year and 39 days) in 33 countries.

“In 2016, President Buhari spent a total of 17 days in a London hospital treating an undisclosed ailment. Shortly after that, in 2017, he reportedly spent a total of 152 days in London on medical vacation when he became inaccessible, except for a few politicians. He equally made frequent trips to the UK on ‘private visits’ believed to be for medical reasons. On May 8, 2018, he again embarked on a six-day medical vacation to London.

“More worrisome is that the medical treatments of the President are still an official secret as Nigerians are not told how much of their cash has been deployed for the medical treatments of the President for months.

“Apart from the Nigerian President, his son; Yusuf, in December 2017 was flown to Germany after suffering injuries from a bike accident in Abuja. These trips were embarked upon despite a huge sum of above N10bn allocation to the State House Clinic from 2015 to 2018.

“In a recent development, the Wife of the President; Aisha Buhari, and a Nephew and close confidant of the President defied the lockdown and the shutdown of airports to gallivant all over UK and Dubai for the so called medical tourism.

“In addition, if he is spending his money how is it that the Presidency is being quoted by newspapers to be saying Mamman Daura is not ill and the phone conversations are being shown to Nigerians through the instrumentality of the publicly funded media office of the President?

“That of the first lady is more shocking because she was said to have neck pains and that was the reason for deploying a presidential jet to jet off to Dubai for weeks at public costs.

“HURIWA is pleased and indeed happy that God was on our side to have stopped an unforeseeable air disaster from ever happening following the reported incidents with the homebound Presidential jet in connection with the weather, but to convey the idea that the First Lady had to fly out to treat neck pain is to tell the World that the Nigerian health sector has totally collapsed. This is sad and unfortunate,” he said.

The human rights group demanded that “This penchant of government officials and those close to the corridor of power jetting abroad to receive medical care for undisclosed ailments even as the rest of the population relies on an underfunded and overworked public healthcare system has been the bane of our health sector and the economy has been worse hit for it.

“The problems associated with the poor healthcare system also indict the governors of the 36 states because in those states, there are virtually no functional health centres to care for the residents. However, the pathetic situation afflicting the State House Clinic is even more disturbing.

“The expenditures of the released budgetary funds for the State House Clinic over the years must be investigated in addition to a comprehensive audit of the spending on the State House Clinic and the health sector in the country.

“It is unjustifiable that the State House Clinic would be guzzling billions of taxpayers’ money and those the facility is meant to serve would still be spending millions to seek treatment in other private facilities within and outside the country.

“If the N13bn budgetary allocations over the years have been actually used for the State House Clinic, the situation would have been different and same applied to the general health sector in the country

“Therefore, the failure of President Muhammadu Buhari in setting up a panel to investigate the scandals that is happening at the State House Clinic is a deviation from the cardinal trails of a government who rode to power on the mantra of integrity.

“This is because clearly there are issues of corruption as alleged by Aisha Buhari, which is the simple explanation for the frequent medical tourism by the first family and their cronies.

“Whether the Presidential Officials are persons of integrity is a big question, but how would one classify the integrity of a government that has been in place for five years but till date the President and other government officials embark on several trips abroad; many of them enveloped to look like official travels when in fact they are for medical reasons?

“We demand to know what the $3.4bn World Bank loan on covid-19 has been used for. We condemn the fact that till date the Covid-19 pandemic, which allegedly claimed the life of the powerful former Chief of Staff to the President; Abba Kyari & other top political office holders is not strong enough to assist in confronting not only the State House Corruption, but also compelling the government to invest massively in reviving the moribund health sector.

“We are strongly disappointed that General Sani Abacha who is abused as a thief could build several Federal Medical Centres and his wife built the National Hospital in Abuja but yet this government has been in power for five years and has built no single tertiary Medical Centre of repute in any part of Nigeria but the officials frequent foreign jurisdictions for medical treatments. This is a monumental shame on this government.

“This is perhaps the time to declare a state of emergency to transform the nation’s health facilities to bring them up to speed with the 21st century. As such, the time for the government to champion the complete overhaul of the health sector by instituting and implementing the necessary reforms to transform the sector.”
