13-year-old girl is raped and strangled to death by 'two men' in India

A 13-year-old girl has been raped and killed in India.

The horrifying incident took place in the Uttar Pradesh district of Lakhimpur Kheri, India, on Friday, August 14.

According to Indian broadcaster NDTV, the girl's grieving dad alleged that she had been strangled, her eyes gouged out and her tongue cut off but police disputed his claims.

The girl had gone missing on Friday afternoon. "We went looking for her everywhere. Found her in the sugarcane field. Her eyes had been gouged out.

"Her tongue was cut and strangled with a dupatta (scarf)," the girl's dad said.

Police confirmed that the girl's body was discovered in a sugar cane field near the Nepalese border and said a post-mortem showed signs of rape and strangulation.

The superintendent of Police of Kheri Satendra Kumar said: "Her eyes were not gouged and tongue was not cut. The claim is not true.

"There is nothing in the post-mortem report to suggest this.

"There were scratches near the eyes, likely due to the sharp sugarcane leaves where the body was found."

The district police chief added: "The girl's post mortem has confirmed rape.

Two arrests have been made in relation to the incident, authorities confirmed.

"The two accused had been arrested already. We will file charges for rape, murder, and also under the National Security Act," Kumar added.

Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati condemned the incident on Twitter calling it "extremely shameful".

She wrote: "What is the difference between the governments of the Samajwadi Party and the present BJP if such incidents keep happening?"

Amaechi, Reps In Face Off Over $33b Chinese Loan
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Edoman - 08-18-2020, 09:27 AM - No Replies

Quote:THERE was heated argument at the House of Representatives Hearing Room 028 yesterday between Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and House Committee Chairman on Treaties, Particulars and Agreement Ossai Nicholas Ossai.

It was during the legislative hearing on the loans agreements signed by the ministry. At issue was an alleged $33 billion loan which Ossai said Nigeria had signed. But the minister denied any such agreement.

The drama unfolded before Minister of Works and Housing Babatunde Fashola and the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Muhammed Bello.

Amaechi, who had warned the committee against scrutinising the Chinese loans, repeated his position that Nigeria might lose the opportunity of a loan to fund the Lagos-Calabar coastal rail line and the people of Southsouth will be denied that project because “of the committee you set up to investigate the Chinese loans.”

Ossai (PDP Delta), frowned at the “misconception and misgivings” on the legislative scrutiny of various agreements signed by government officials.

He said: ”We have heard some people ask why we are focusing on only Chinese-related loans and commercial contracts. We will like Nigerians to know that we aren’t focusing on only Chinese loans. From what we know, Nigeria has over 500 bilateral loan and commercial contracts agreements and investments treaties with different countries and institutions.

”There is no way the committee will do a thorough job without segmenting the issues based on countries, institutions, or MDAs. Thus, it must be clearly noted that this is not targeted at only China, neither was it designed to impede the development of the railway sector and other infrastructures.

“But rather to ensure full disclosure, transparency, accountability, utmost good faith, and value for money in both the bilateral loans and commercial contracts agreements entered into by the Nigerian government.

“The loan agreements we have seen so far, show that government officials charged with the responsibility of representing Nigeria were more desperate to just take the loans at any condition, possibly using non-negotiated loan agreements templates rather than go through the rigour of diligent technical review of negotiating specific clauses with clarity and for national interest.

”For instance, it’s a common practice that most international loan agreements would adopt ‘Sovereign guarantee’ and a neutral international arbitration centre as opposed to waiving of our national sovereignty in an omnibus manner; especially in dealing with countries like China, known to possess an absolute state status on their institutions and corporations.

“However, the immunity clauses in most of these agreements before us are not only ambiguous but very obscure. And without recourse to the fact that Nigerian government had issued circular on the subject matter with reference number SGF/OP/S.3/X/ 1737 dated 11th August, 2014 that provided guideline on issues of waiver of sovereign immunity clause during loan and commercial agreements negotiations.

”We expected government officials negotiating and signing these loans to fully comply with this guideline and also ensure that the clauses are couched to clearly reflect same”.

Questioning the rationale behind accepting Hong Kong as arbitration centre for the Chinese loans secured by Nigeria, he said “arbitration centres for bilateral loan agreements are known to be generally on neutral grounds unlike what we have in most of the Nigeria/China agreements where Hong Kong that is also governed by China laws was designated as the Arbitration Centre.

“From our experience, the MDAs sign these commercial agreements in billions of dollars, then go to the President and Federal Executive Council for approval to execute, including securing loan facilities through Ministry of Finance and Debt Management Office (DMO) and then proceed to negotiate the terms of these loans before coming back to Mr. President who then writes the National Assembly asking for approval for billions of dollars to do projects without attaching the negotiated loan and commercial contracts agreement details.

“This approach is the reason we have government representatives signing empty pages of loan agreements repayment schedule and other key documents required for the loan agreements to become effective. We have commercial contracts signed in US dollars, while the loan agreements for the execution of the same contracts were signed in Chinese YUAN currency in Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy/Galaxy Backbone Limited.

”We have noticed from documents available to us that commercial contracts signed by federal ministry of transportation alone is over $33 billion without any clearcut financing arrangements. Most of these commercial contracts agreements didn’t also have local content clauses and more witnessed by none properly designated and authorized officials.

”There are observable issues relating to procurement process, evidence of 15% advanced payments, payment of management fees, drawdown process and remittances and a whole lot of other matters, which we are strongly poised to ask questions on and hopes to get honest answers that will fine tune the current process, plan for possible renegotiation of some these agreements in order serve Nigerians better.

While dismissing the claim of an existing $33 billion contract signed by the Ministry, Amaechi demanded evidence of the contract from the Committee. He said: “Mr. Chairman, if you say that the the ministry has awarded a contract of $33 billion, we would want to see it because the only contract Ministry of Transportation has awarded so far is $1.6 billion for Lagos/Ibadan (rail project).

“The Implication of having a $33 billion contract is that be will have a large number of workers. There is no $33 billion contract in the Ministry of contract. What we have is the $1.6 billion contract awarded under President Buhari and $800 million contract awarded under President Goodluck Jonathan. By the time, the contract signed under President Jonathan had been completed, 80 per cent and so, we didn’t have to do anything about local content or no local content.

“The only one we had to deal with the issue of local content which is the only contract we have for now is the $1.6 billion contract awarded from Lagos to Ibadan of which the Chinese government is providing $1.2 and wed are providing the remaining $400 million. There are over 20,000 workers on that project with only 560 of them being Chinese. We need to begin to say truth to Nigerians.”

Amaechi told the committee that the Lagos/Calabar rail line will not be possible because the House is probing the loan which has not been secured for the project, adding that at the moment, there is no contract because there was no loan.

However, as the interaction began to degenerate into an altercation between the minister and the Chairman of the Committee, the Speaker walked in unannounced and asked that the hearing be adjourned for 10 minutes.

Ossai demanded comprehensive explanation from the Minister on the various loans taken by the government insisting that it was immaterial whether the loan was taken by the APC government or the PDP government, adding that what was important was that the interest of Nigeria and future generation of Nigerians was at stake.

The following discussion took place between the minister and the panel chairman:

Ossai: You submitted an addendum section 16 B (1) under the loan content obligation. Articule 61 (1) stated that the contractor hall develop and submit to the employer, Ministry of Transport for its approval a local content plan for training and engagement of Nigeria labour plan in all aspect of the contractor work. Can you provide the committee the certified copies of the labour plan, training carried out and the beneficiaries and evidence of the number of Nigerians working in all aspect of this project and their Chinese counterpart as provided in that document?

Amaechi: I will give a slight response to your speech and they my response. The slight response is to say that we tried to be more patriotic than we have been.

Committee member: Point of order Mr. Chairman.

Ossai: I have given him the right to speak.

Amaechi: No sir, I have a right to speak. You have invited me and I have a right to speak. I was once a member of a House. So, I have the right to talk.

Ossai: Can you speak to the questions I asked you now?

Amaechi: It is either you allow speak or I stop.

Ossai: I am in charge here and I will observe you when the need arises. The Minister is speaking and I will not observe any other member. Let the Minister finish his speech and I will give you room to talk.

Amaechi: So, Mr. Chairman, the contract awarded by this government is $1.2 billion contribution by the Chinese and the $400 million being contributed by Nigeria. You ask for document and I have said I will provide the details. You talk of training. Over 150 Nigerians are in China to be trained. Apart from that, they have built two training institutions. One in Idu and I will like the Chairman to come and visit. We are also building a university in Daura.

Ossai: Are you aware, Mr Minister of the $11.1 billion Nigeria Coastal Railway project that was signed on 1st of July 2016?

Amaechi: Has the loan been approved?

Ossai: I am asking you. Are you aware?

Amaechi: I am aware, but has the loan been approved?

Ossai: You made a lot of statements initially and you restricted yourself to one. The Commercial contract further stated that the contract further covenant that he shall give priority to the engagement of Nigerian commercial firm for the supply of goods and materials. Can you provide us with records of Nigerians commercial firms currently being engaged and providing services under this contract.

Amaechi: it is important to tell you that the contract was signed as a credit to a loan and we have not gotten the loan because of you and the committee you set up against the China group. That contract is from Lagos to Calabar which covers the whole of the south south. We may not get that loan and so, there is no contract.

Ossai: I am talking about the contract…

Amaechi: Which contract? Do you want to see the south south contract? If you want to, say so. Because you are from the south south. Because of the committee you have set up, we will loss that loan for the project from Lagos to calabar.

Ossai: This issue is not about South south, but about Nigeria and I am serving Nigeria as a legislator. For us to continue to serve our geopolitical zones, this country will not be nice. If zone A get their share, next year, another zone…

Amaechi: I am coming, have you now approached me on south south rail?

Ossai: I have not

Amaechi: You have. Mr Chairman, you have approached me.

Ossai: That is ok. We will degenerate the issue to south south or any other south.

Oshiomhole Replies Saliu Lukman, "Says I Won’t Fight With A Pig"
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-18-2020, 09:22 AM - No Replies

Quote:FORMER National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on Monday said that he was not going to respond to the allegations made against him by the Progressive Governors Forum, Saliu Lukewarm over plot to come back as Chairman of the ruling party.

Comrade Oshiomhole said it takes an empty brain to suggest that he wants to stage a come back to become the national chairman.

He stated this while speaking to State House correspondents after meeting behind closed doors with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Asked to react to the allegation by the Director-General of the Progressive Governors Forum, Lukewarm, that he wants to come back as Chairman, he said he would not engage in any fight with those he described as cowards within the governor’s forum using the DG to attack him.

He said, “You want me to engage in a fight with a pig? If you engage in a fight with a pig, the pig already is stained by its nature and you will wear your white garment, and in my own case, khaki to go and wrestle with a pig? I will not.

“You see, what I want the media to interrogate, how does winning Edo.
when I was removed as national chairman, Edo was APC. So do I have to win Edo to become the chairman? Do I look so unemployed? I’m 68.

“So, what they don’t understand is that it is not the office of chairman that makes me who I am. It is my pedigree from my days as a labourer in the textile industry to be the general secretary of textile workers all over Nigeria and becoming the president of NLC.

“There is no village I go to that people do not know me and is this that I used to override The Godfathers in Edo State for two consecutive terms and even got the governor elected through elections, no violence before becoming the national chairman.

“So, if you remove the office, is like our president now, maybe I cannot compare myself to him, but it is like President Muhammadu Buhari by 2023, when his tenure would have elapsed as President but those who believe in him, in 2024 and beyond, any time they see him, that trust they have in him will always be there.

“He bonds with the people, that bond was not created by the fact that he is the president, in fact, he became the president because of that bond.

“So, it takes an empty brain to suggest that Oh Oshiomhole wants to stage a come back to become the national chairman. For what? To go and do a resit?

“So my attitude is not to reply the noise and it is coming from somebody who says he is an employee, an appointee of Progressives Governors Forum, it is just like the cowards that are using him are not able to come out.

“Otherwise, you should ask this guy, who is now an election expert. He contested for senate against Makarfi, he lost. He even contested against governor El-Rufai during the primaries and he lost before Fayemi unilaterally appointed him the DG.

“So, if he is now the spokesman abusing me and all of that, you want to drag me to his level? No! A gentleman does not wrestle with a pig if you do you will always be stained and I don’t want to get into that.”

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

TUESDAY 18TH AUGUST.

LIFE DOESN’T HAVE TO BE A STRUGGLE

And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made (Genesis 2:2).

Read the creation story in the book of Genesis: After God saw that all He had created was very good, pleasant, and excellent in every way, He ceased from His work and rested on the seventh day.

That seventh day would be man’s first day. When he awakened, he found that everything was ready. There was nothing left for man to do except to enjoy what had been created, take care of them, and appreciate his Creator. This was a shadow of the sabbath and rest for God’s people. You were born into His rest (Hebrews 4:9-10).

There’re people who perpetually live a life of struggle. They hardly ever accomplish a goal without a brawl with the devil. They’ve always had to fight their way through life, praying and fasting for days on end, and casting out all kinds of devils.

This has been their experience from childhood to adulthood. They had to fight intense “spiritual battles” before they could gain admission into a university. When it was time to graduate, the conditions were just as difficult and they had to fight the same kind of battles.

Getting a job after school was the same story. Finding a spouse and raising kids weren’t any different. Their lives have been an endless string of hardships and difficulties. Something is wrong.

If you’re born again and filled with the Holy Spirit, you ought to live a life of endless joy and rest, where you heap success upon success through the power of the Holy Spirit. But if you don’t understand how to appropriate and enjoy your divine inheritance in Christ, you’ll likely live “a life of ceaseless battles,” like the one we just described. Refuse that kind of life.

Embrace the stress-free life in Christ. He said in Matthew 11:28, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” You already came to Him at salvation and He’s already given you rest: “For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his” (Hebrews 4:10). This is the reality of your life.

The Lord Jesus didn’t whip the devil to leave us still “fighting” and struggling our way through life. His vicarious sacrifice in our behalf, and His work to give us the victory were complete. So, change your way of thinking where necessary and accept His Word today. Accept the life of joy, peace and glory that He’s given you.

CONFESSION

The Lord has made my life easy, glorious and exciting; I live a stress-free life in Christ. I’m in God’s rest; therefore, I enjoy a life of joy and peace with prosperity! Praise God.

#AFFIRMATIONTRAIN

I affirm that I am a member of the greatest family ever – the family of God! I walk worthy of the vocation wherewith I’m called, with all submissiveness and meekness, forbearing with my fellow brothers and sisters in love, and endeavouring to keep unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

I am not ashamed of the Gospel because it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes.

I am stirred on the inside, with an intense passion, an unreserved commitment, and an unparalleled devotion to the Gospel.

I am determined, more than ever, to reach the unreached with the Gospel! I have the guidance of the Holy Spirit to proclaim God’s wisdom and impact many with His righteousness and blessings of the Gospel.

My heart and mouth are filled with words of power, even now, to cause changes in my world and in the regions beyond.

My passion for lost souls is stirred with renewed commitment, and I declare that the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ blazes intensely in the hearts
of the ignorant and unconverted around the world today.

As I go about doing the will of the Father today, I bring deliverance to every creature in my world, taking them out of bondage and corruption, into the glorious liberty of the sons of God.

I give life to the things around me through the power of my words, for these are the days of the manifestation of the sons of God. Glory to God.  Hallelujah!

God bless you

WAEC: Imo Public Schools Charging Students N2,000 Per Subject To Allow Cheating During Exam

Quote:Some public secondary schools in Imo State are reportedly charging students N2,000 per subject to provide them with answers to questions in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

The school owners met with students before the commencement of the examination where they informed them that they would provide the answers if each student paid N2,000 per subject.

A relative of the students, who spoke with our correspondent, said the schools claimed that majority of the students might fail because of the Coronavirus lockdown and unpreparedness for the examination.

The relative also said the school claimed that the money would be given to each invigilator monitoring the examination.

“The school management held meetings with their students and it was agreed they pay the N2,000 to settle WAEC invigilators to give them way for exam cheats.

“School principals in public secondary schools in Imo State are charging WAEC students N2,000 per subject as sorting fees to settle WAEC invigilators.

“They said the money will be to allow their students to engage in exam malpractices in the various subjects because of their unpreparedness for the exams caused by COVID-19 closure of schoolse since March 2020,” the relative said as he pleaded anonymity.

The relative stated that some schools in the rural area of the state wire collecting a lesser fee from the students.

“Other public secondary schools in rural areas are paying N1,500 against N2,000 paid in urban public schools.

“The schools came up with the plan so they can collect money from the students.

“The public schools are to generate over N300,000 per day and the maximum they will give WAEC invigilators will be N50,000 while the balance will be for the school management,” he added.

The examination, which started today, August 17, is scheduled to end on September 7, 2020.

Quote:Popular social media personality, Ismaila Mustapha, aka Mompha, has been rearrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has re-arrested over charges of money laundering.

Mompha is facing charges before the Federal High Court.

The Nation learnt Mompha was re-arrested last Friday when he went to the EFCC office in Ikoyi, Lagos.

He was at the office to reclaim his five wristwatches, one Apple Air pod, one iPhone 8 mobile phones and one pair of sunglasses seized from him by the anti-graft agency.

Following an application by his lawyer, Mr Gboyega Oyewole (SAN), Justice Mohammed Liman on July 24 ordered the EFCC to release the items to Mompha.

The judge ruled since the items were not listed as exhibits in the money laundering charges filed against Mompha, the EFCC had no justification to continue to hold onto them.

He dismissed the submission by the EFCC that Mompha was still under investigation for another offence, saying there was nothing before the court to back the submission.

“Failure to release the property is illegal. As of today, no charge has been file regarding the items. It is too long to withhold the applicant properties,” the judge had held.

It was gathered Mompha had barely left the premises of the EFCC office in Ikoyi after collecting the items on Friday when operatives of the anti-graft agency waylaid him and returned him into custody.

Woman burns her 8-year-old nephew's back and buttocks with hot iron because he ate her 50 Naira groundnut

An 8-year-old boy was scarred with hot iron by his aunt because he ate the 50 Naira groundnut she left in the house.

The incident happened at Anantigha, Calabar South, on Sunday, August 16, when the aunt returned from Sunday service to discover that the groundnut was gone.

She questioned the boy about it, then plugged in an electric iron and used it to burn his back and buttocks. When she was done, she refused to give him food.

Old scars on the boy's burnt fingers also revealed that it isn't the first time she has abused him since he started living with her about three years ago.

Speaking with Vanguard on Monday, August 17, the Principal Counsel, Basic Rights Initiative, James Ibor Esq., said they received a call from Girl Power Initiative, GPI, about a lady who had been assaulting her nephew with hot iron, burning stove and other hot objects.

According to Ibor, she plugged an electric iron and burnt the boys back and buttocks because he ate the N50  left-over groundnut and that was not the first time that such was happening.

He said: “From what the boy has told us, which is also very visible, he has been tortured and traumatised, and the boy is in serious pains. From here we are taking him to a medical facility where he can get adequate care.

“We have written to the Police and the state Ministry of Humanities and Social Welfare to enable us take good care of him in our own shelter home, because we cannot allow the child to go back to the aunty again.

"We have also invited the father, because the mother is late. Further actions can be taken as he and two of his siblings live with the said aunty.

“It is unfortunate that this kind of dastardly act and injury can be inflicted on a child. Even if he ate the groundnut, there is no justification for this kind of wickedness.”

The Department of State Services (DSS) has invited Dr. Obadiah Mailafiya, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for questioning again.
His lawyer, Yakubu Bawa, disclosed this to newsmen on Monday in Jos, NAN reports

According to him, Mailafiya is expected to be at the Jos office of the DSS on Monday by 12 noon.
Bawa said the invitation was in connection with Mailafiya’s encounter with the DSS last week.

“I believed it wouldn’t be anything different from the last encounter with DSS, which was purely interactive,” he said.

Recall that the former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, had alleged that a northern governor was the Commander of Boko Haram.
He also alleged that Boko Haram insurgents were plotting civil war in 2022.

In response to his allegation, DSS had invited him for questioning which he honored.

However, speaking after his interrogation, he declared that [url=https://dailypost.ng/2020/08/12/boko-]he stood by his earlier revelations on Boko Haram.

Governors, Lawmakers, Ministers Share 774,000 Jobs
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Edoman - 08-17-2020, 06:35 PM - No Replies

• Ministers, religious institutions, transport workers, women societies, CSOs get slots

• ’Oct. take off on course’

Quote:The wrangling over the 774,000 public works jobs initiated by the Federal Government might have been resolved with slots allocated to lawmakers.

Besides Senators and House of Representatives members, governors and ministers will also make nominations.

The process of recruitment which the National Assembly tried to halt, after a clash between Minister of State Labour and Employment and the joint committee of the National Assembly on Labour and Employment, is going on in all the states.

Political office holders have been allocated 15 per cent of the slots in the programme designed to employ 1,000 artisan youths from each of the 774 local government councils in the country.

Beneficiaries are to work for three months between October and December. Each will earn N20,000 monthly, doing public works as may be determined.

N52 billion has been approved for the project in the 2020 budget.

Giving a breakdown of the slots sharing, the Chairman of the Extended Special Public Work Selection Committee in Rivers State, Dr. Innocent Barikor, told The Nation reporter at the weekend that: “The programme has a guideline.

“The directive given to us is that every state governor has 40 slots of the job in each LGA; serving Senators have 30 each, members of House of Representative have 25 slots; a minister has 30 slots in every LGA in his state of origin, so I have nothing to do about it.”

The committee chairman added: “This job is for those that do not know about ICT. They are jobs for bricklayers, market women, hairdressers, among others.”

Kaduna State Chairman of the Selection Committee, Hajiya Hafsat Baba, said: “Thirteen per cent of the total number allocated to Kaduna is being shared among the elected and appointed political office holders from the state, while the eighty-seven per cent will be given to the people through a random selection committee.”

Fifty slots were allocated to the member representing Gwer East and Gwer West Constituency of Benue State in the House of Representatives.

NDE State Coordinator, Musa Sadauki, who is also the selection committee Secretary, wrote: “We are pleased to formally notify you that the Hon. Minister of Labour and Employment, Mr. Festus Keyamo has approved the allotment to you of the 25 slots in each of the two LGAs in your Federal Constituency…”

Plateau State selection committee said it will soon roll out the recruitment modalities.

State coordinator, Rufus Bature, said the committee has held several meetings, and that application forms may be distributed as from next week.

Enugu State Chairman of the Committee, Chief Gbazuagu Nweke Gbazuagu, said the recruitment was running smoothly.

Keyamo who confirmed the slot reservations, said: “Yes, the figures are true. Fifteen per cent has been reserved for political officeholders. They also have constituents they represent.

“The slots for Senators and House of Representatives members are for the local governments within the constituents/catchment areas that they represent, not the whole state.

“It is a very, very small number if you consider that the slots are not up to 150 out of 1,000 per local government. So, you still have 850 per local government. You still have a large number reserved for Nigerians.”

The Katsina State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) protested the quota allotted to the association by the committee.

The chairman, Reverend Nelson Onyekachukwu, said: “Asking CAN to contribute only 20 people from each of the 34 local government areas in the state is grossly unfair to the association.”

The implementation committee chairman, Alhaji Musa Magaji, said the recruitment would be done equitably irrespective of religious or political affiliation, adding that CAN is just one of the groups to be accommodated.

The Anambra State’s Selection Committee head, Sir Uzoma Igbonwa, said the project would soon take off.

He said the traditional rulers sub-committee was yet to be inaugurated, but that those of market women, road workers, youths, CAN and Muslim group have all been inaugurated.

Lawmakers in Imo State have allegedly hijacked the forms for some local government areas.

An artisan, Elder Jacob Uwaleke from Owerri West Local Government Area, said: “We were told that lawmakers collected the forms on behalf of their constituencies but honestly I am yet to see it.”

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, said the exercise open.

“There is no mystery about it. It is being done transparently,” he said.

Selection Committee Chairman, Okenze Obinna, said the form was available at NDE office.

“We have given the forms to all elected officials. The problem is that people think that the 27,000 slots to the LGA are inexhaustible, but I have not got any heartbreaking complaint.”

The 20-man selection committee inaugurated in Delta State has begun the recruitment process.

Chairman of the committee, Prof Kelly Ejemudo, said: “We already have slots allotted to political officeholders. Then we have interest groups.

“Our committee did not adopt the hard copy or electronic mode because some scammers may hijack it.

“Apart from the state committee, we have local government coordinators. We also have ward supervisors.”

Our correspondent learnt that 30 slots were allotted to each of the traditional in the eight councils of Delta Central.

For Delta South, 20 slots were reportedly allotted to the Olu of Warri.

Ijaw monarchs under the senatorial district reportedly got 10 slots per six local government areas, while royal fathers of Isoko ethnic nationality received 30 slots for the two Isoko North and South council areas each.

Traditional rulers in Delta North senatorial district were reportedly allotted 40 slots each.

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) got 10 each across the 25 council areas; market women got 250 slots, 10 for each council area; youth organisations reportedly got 20 slots for each of the council areas, bringing their total to 500.

The state chapters of CAN and the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs were reportedly given “500 job slots each, 20 per LGA”.

The committee chairman in Oyo State, Mr Ope Salami, said they were yet to receive any mobilisation fund from the Federal Government for logistics.

He said the committee would announce when prospective applicants can approach their council areas to obtain the application forms.

In Ebonyi, the committee said it will conclude work on the list of those to be recruited by end of the month.

Its Chairman, Edward Nkwegu, said 13,000 persons are to be recruited from the 13 council areas.

The Senate insisted that the Directorate of Employment (NDE) should handle the recruitment.

Chairman Senate Committee on Employment, Labour and Productivity, Senator Godiya Akwashiki (Nasarawa North), said the Senate’s position remains unchanged.

He said: “Before we went on break, we had a resolution. We did not say they should suspend the programme.

“Strictly, the law says that the NDE should implement the programme, that is, planning and execution, while the Minister’s role is that of supervision as far as the law is concerned.

“This was the position of both chambers of the National Assembly.”

On whether the NDE is implementing the resolution, he said: “I don’t know but that is the position of the Act establishing the NDE. That is the position of the law.”

“We are watching. We believe it is still in the preliminary stages, so there is no cause for alarm. It is too early for now because all of us are on break. So I will advise you to wait.”

House of Representatives spokesman, Benjamin Kalu, added: “It’s their job to recruit. That the Executive is doing the job does not mean the National Assembly is not having an input into the programme.

“The National Assembly will have input because there must be a way to accommodate the people we represent.”

Barikor said members of the committee would not allow any political party to hijack the scheme.

According to him, the committee was in talks with the Rivers State government following its decision to pull out of the scheme.

He said: “I believe that some level of misinformation is responsible for what had happened.”

A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Minna, Niger State, on Monday August 17, sentenced two brothers, Hassan Bilyaminu and Abdullahi Biliyaminu, who are Islamic clerics, to 22 years imprisonment for raping four girls who were students in their Islamic school in Minna, the state capital.

The suspects were arrested earlier this month and were dragged to the court by the police on two counts charges which include sexual assault and act of gross indecency.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) which was read in court by the Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Bello Mohammed, the offenses committed by the suspects were punishable under Section 285 of the penal code law, as well as Section 19 (2) of the Child’s Right Law of Niger State, 2010.

The charge sheet read

Quote:“That on the 2nd of August, 2020, one Lawal Idris of Tudun Nasira Area of Maitumbi in Minna, represented three others, and reported that on 31st of July, 2020, you Hassan Bilyaminu and Abdullahi Bilyamiu lured four of the girls whose ages ranges between 6 and 11 years-old pupils of your Islamiya, into your house and used your finger to rub and inserted it into the minors’ vagina one after the other.

“During the police investigation, you confessed to the commission of the crime. You are hereby suspected to have committed the above offenses.”

The suspects pleaded guilty to the charges and appealed to the judge to temper justice with mercy. They claimed the devil pushed them to commit the crime.

In delivering her judgement, the presiding Chief Magistrate, Hauwa Baba Yusuf, wondered what rapists derived from assaulting and defiling little girls, saying that it should no longer be condoned.

Quote:“One wonders what people like the convicts derived from assaulting and defiling little girls. This has gone berserk; there must be more to this pandemic of sexual assault on little children.” the judge said

OFFICE OF THE CHIEF PRESS SECRETARY

PRESS RELEASE

I've instructed My Lawyers To Appeal Tribunal Ruling - Gov. Diri

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has said he will appeal Monday's ruling of the state election petition tribunal sitting in Abuja and has consequently instructed his lawyers to file the necessary papers.

Governor Diri, who spoke shortly after the tribunal ruled that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) wrongly excluded the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP) governorship candidate from the November 16, 2019 election, said he has implicit confidence in the judiciary that he would triumph in the end.

His words: "We trust in the judiciary and we are appealing the judgement. With God on our side, we will get justice.

"This is a court of first instance and I have instructed our lawyers to file an appeal. We have a right of appeal even up to the Supreme Court."

The governor urged members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his supporters not to panic and to continue to remain calm and law-abiding.

Kamala Harris responds to Trump's birther conspiracy attacks claiming she isn't eligible to be US vice president

Democratic US vice presidential nominee, Kamala Harris has reacted after US President Donald Trump and his campaign promoted a birther conspiracy against her last week.

Last week, former Vice President Joe Biden selected Harris as his running mate, boosting his chances of defeating Trump in the November polls.

If Biden is elected, Harris would be the first Black and South Asian American vice president.

After Biden announced Harris as his running mate, John Eastman, a lawyer and Chapman University professor questioned Harris' eligibility to contest for president or vice president in a Newsweek op-ed, saying she was born to Indian and Jamaican parents.

Harris was born in Oakland, California, making her natural born citizen meaning she is eligible to be vice president, but Trump, who has pushed similar conspiracies about former President Barack Obama, said that he would not be "pursuing" questions about Harris' eligibility, but did not dismiss the conspiracy theories as false. Instead he praised the lawyer John Eastman as "very highly qualified" and a "brilliant lawyer."

Trump also said he heard on "social media" that Harris could be ineligible but he won't be focusing on it.

"I know nothing about it, but it's not something that bothers me," the President said during a news conference at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club.
"I just don't know about it but it's not something we will be pursuing."

Harris has now responded to the birther theories saying Trump's campaign will "engage in lies" and "deception" but she is ready for the attacks.

"They're going to engage in an attempt to distract from the real issues that are impacting the American people. And I expect that they will engage in dirty tactics. And this is going to be a knockdown, drag-out. And we're ready," Harris told media outlet TheGrio in an interview released Sunday August 16, when asked how Trump promoting birther conspiracies signals the tactics his campaign will use.

They Scout For Obituaries Of Rich People To Steal Money In Their Bank Accounts

Quote:Seven held in plot to defraud dead persons

Police in Lagos have frustrated suspected fraudsters’ plan with local and international bankers to steal money from the accounts of dead persons.

Seven persons arrested last week in connection with the alleged scheme are being interrogated by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS).

RRS said in a statement on Sunday that the suspects planned to transfer N25 million from a local bank account and $220,000 from an international account.

Police said the alleged fraudsters scout for obituaries of well-to-do individuals, use bank insiders to determine their account balance, and clone their SIM cards for online transfer.

One of the bank insiders was arrested in Lagos while another based in Benin is on the run after suspecting the gang had been busted and that police were on his trail.

Their arrest was based on intelligence received on the activities of a fraud syndicate based in Lagos allegedly led by one Osita Nwafor, alias Ossy.

Nwafor, 45, was picked up in the gang’s hideout after a technical analysis of the details of the gang and its activities. His arrest facilitated the apprehension of six other members of the gang in different parts of the metropolis.

They are Nwogu Joseph Chika, 36, Anthony Odama, 43, Ikechukwu Nkem, 32, James Okonkwo, 51, Adedio Paulinus, 29, and Ogundepo Olufemi, 51.

The arrest of the gang voided a fraudulent transaction of N3 million that had been perfected by the syndicate through a cloned SIM card.

Police said Nwafor recruited the gang, with each member handling specific aspects of their operation.

cases and each and every member of the has his own role on each of the cases.

“Once I have done my own part of the deal (sourcing for SIMs and accounts numbers through which the group perpetrates its fraud), I push it to whoever among the member has to play the next role and that is how we treat our cases.

“Apart from this, each member of the gang also has his own splinter group. Whenever they have personal jobs, they also handle on their own.”

The suspects said they work with bank insiders locally and internationally.

Nwafor added: “Chike (Nwogu) sourced for foreign and local accounts for money lodgments. I don’t know anything about how he does that, I simply hand over to Chike. He has his connections and they work on percentage. Once they agree on the percentage, when the money comes, everybody gets his own cuts”.

Nwafor said Nwogu was working on the transfer of $220,000 fresh transaction from a foreign bank (bank name, account holder and parties withheld) before he was arrested.

Another member of the syndicate, Femi Ogundepo, it was revealed, was also working on a fraudulent transaction of N25 million from an old generation bank with an insider connivance (details of the deal withheld).

James Okonkwo, a close ally of Nwafor, the gang coordinator, it was disclosed allegedly cornered N8 million fraudulent proceed of the gang shortly before his arrest.

This, it was learnt, was the cause of a serious dispute between Nwafor and Okonkwo, who just came back from the village.

RRS said the suspects have been transferred to the SARS for further investigations and prosecution.

Bauchi DPO Tortures 2 People To Death For Stealing Chicken
User Avatar Forum: Other Stories
Posted by: Edoman - 08-17-2020, 01:50 PM - No Replies

An unnamed Divisional Police Officer, DPO of a station in Bauchi has been called out for allegedly torturing 2 people to death for stealing chicken.

According to the allegation by one Bulama Bukarti, the officer was alleged to have collected payments from the families of the victims and the alleged buyer of the stolen chickens, before proceeding to torture the men, numbering 3.

One of the men reportedly survived and he was the one who narrated the story.

Bulama wrote on Twitter:

Just when you think it can’t get any worse, they’d say ‘hold on’. This morning, BBC Hausa did a story on how a DPO in Bauchi tortured two men to DEATH and left the 3rd with FIVE fractures for allegedly stealing seven CHICKENS.

Here’s what happened according the surviving victim:
The victims were arrested for allegedly stealing seven chickens. The man they sold them to was sommoned and ordered to pay N2,000 each for thirteen, instead of seven chikens, and he did. The suspects were ordered by the DPO to pay N4,000 and their parents paid a total of N12,000.

The DPO told the parents to go; that he’d release the suspects later. He then ordered his officers to tie the suspects up. He told the suspects to be chanting “stealing has ended” in Hausa & started beating them with a big stuff in their legs heads, chests, all over their bodies.

The first suspect died instantly. The second died for head and neck injuries in a hospital. The third is currently home nursing five factures including two on the knees of each leg. The second suspect’s mother related to BBC Hausa how her son died tragically in the hospital.

The Bauchi State Police Cammand said it’s set up a committee to investigate the matter but the DPO was not suspended, much less, arrested. When pressed by BBC, the police spokesman said “You can’t arrest a senior policeman!”.

The alleged torturer is still the DPO of the division.

Incidents like this are all too common in Nigeria, as well as their sheer corruption, that police’s bad reputation in the eyes of Nigerians. I call on the @PoliceNG to take over this matter. The DPO must be investigated and prosecuted for culpable homicide in a transparent way.

55 year old Man married his daughter after he helped her torture and kill her boyfriend on valentine's day

A 55 year old dad, Larry McClure has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2019 murder of 38-year-old Thomas McGuire, his daughter's boyfriend on valentine's day.

According to the Bluefield Daily Telegraph, Larry tortured and dismembered his daughter's boyfriend, then had sex with her and married her.

Larry McClure has been charged with first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison last week Thursday, the new report says.

His daughter Amanda McClure, 31, (pictured below) also confessed to killing Thomas and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Larry and his daughter Amanda, along with Amanda's sister Anna Marie Choudhary, 32, of Boone, North Carolina are alleged to have murdered Thomas by striking him with a wine bottle, tying him up, injecting two vials of methamphetamine into him, and then strangling him on Valentine's Day in 2019.

Larry claimed it was Amanda's idea to kill Thomas and he went along with it.

Police found Thomas' body several months later in a shallow grave near the Skygusty residence.

The mother of McGuire, Karen Smith, condemned Larry at his court sentencing.

Speaking directly to him, she said: "You and your two kids are going straight to hell! To marry your own daughter, that’s low-down.
"In my book, all three of you need to die! You don’t deserve to be on this earth breathing.
"I’m gonna live to see you or one of your kids die before I go. Who gave y’all the right to play God?"

McDowell County Circuit Court Judge Ed Kornish said in court: “This was not a single violent act, it was a conscious decision.
“You tortured this man for three days before you killed him.”

The killing took place on February 14, 2019 at a West Virginia home they were renting out.

  Tribunal Nullifies Bayelsa Governorship Election

Posted by: Edoman - 08-17-2020, 12:56 PM - No Replies

Quote:The Bayelsa State Gubernatorial Petition Tribunal has nullified the election of Governor Duoye Diri of Bayelsa State.

The election was nullified based on a petition by the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party, which argued that it was unlawfully excluded from participating in the election.

The tribunal ruling can, however, still be challenged at the appeal court.

More details later on the tribunal’s Monday ruling will be provided in subsequent updates.

Monday’s ruling comes two days after the tribunal dismissed three other petitions against the election of Mr Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how the three-member tribunal dismissed the three petitions filed by separte parties on Saturday.

Read our story on the Saturday rulings below.
The Bayelsa State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja, on Saturday, dismissed three petitions against Duoye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and affirmed him the duly elected governor of the state.

The petitions dismissed by the tribunal were filed by the Alliance for Democracy (AD), the United People’s Congress (UPC) and the Liberation Movement (LM).

PREMIUM TIMES reported how the Supreme Court, on February 13, sacked David Lyon of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the governor-elect barely 24 hours to his inauguration.

The apex court based its rulings on the premise that his deputy, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, presented false information to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in aid of his qualification for the November 16 governorship election in the state.

The apex court then ordered INEC to declare the party with the highest number of lawful votes and geographical spread the winner of the election. Mr Diri was later sworn in as governor

Tribunal Ruling
In a unanimous decision on Saturday, a three-member panel of the tribunal dismissed three petitions challenging Mr Diri’s victory.

The judge, S.M. Owoduni, who read the lead judgment of the tribunal held that the petition filed by AD and its candidate, Owei Woniwei, is incompetent and lacks merit.

Justice Owoduni held that the petitioners failed to prove the allegation that Mr Diri’s deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, forged his declaration of age and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharged certificate.

The second petition filed by Ibiene Stephen and his party, UPC and the one filed by the candidate of the Liberation Movement (LM), Vijah Opuama, were also dismissed.

Mr Opuama had filed his petition to challenge the declaration Messrs Diri and Ewhrudjakpo as governor and deputy.

He also alleged that Mr Ewhrudjakpo submitted forged exemption certificate and documents that contain false information to INEC. He is asking the tribunal to cancel the election and order a fresh poll.

Arthur Eze: ‘Obiano Is A Small Fry’

Quote:Anambra Threatens Probe As Arthur Eze Calls Obiano ‘Small Fry’

Anambra oil magnate, Prince Arthur Eze, has vowed not to stop insisting that the state Governor, Willie Obiano, does the right thing.

Eze spoke at his Ukpo home in the Dunikofia Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Sunday.

He said “I’m not afraid of anybody. I have installed three African presidents. One of them gave me oil blocks in his country. I have assisted in enthroning many governors in Nigeria.

“I have given a governorship candidate N10bn to assist him prosecute his election. I didn’t know the candidate from Adam. He just approached me and told me about himself and his people; I empthatised with him and gave him the money.

“Obiano is just a small fry. Even this Obiano, I have given him financial assistance as a person and as a governor several times. I have no personal problems with him. My grouse with him is that he is not doing the right things as a governor.

“Many people are suffering under his government. He is not paying the traditional rulers in the state their five per cent entitlement from the Local Government allocation.”

The oil mogul’s rift with the governor had led to the suspension of 13 traditional rulers suspected to be Eze’s loyalists.

In response, the Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, C-Don Adinuba, said officials of the state government had decided to maintain “dignified silence” on comments by Eze

US reacts after Kano sharia court jailed 13-year-old boy for 10 years for making derogatory statements toward Allah

The United States has blasted the ruling of an Upper Sharia Court in Kano State, after it sentenced a 13-year-old boy, Umar Farouq, to 10 years in prison for making derogatory statements toward Allah during an argument with a friend.

Farouq was convicted on August 10, 2020, by Aliyu Kanu, a Sharia court judge, and Baba-Jibo Ibrahim, the spokesman for Kano Region Justice Ministry, said the court followed due Islamic laws when passing the sentence.

Aliyu Kanu, was the same judge who sentenced a Northern based Musician, Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, to death for 'blaspheming' against Prophet Mohammed in a song.

But the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom has
faulted the judgment meted towards Umar Farouq and Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, saying the blasphemy laws in Nigeria are unconscientious.

USCIRF Commissioner, Frederick Davie, stated; “It is unconscionable that Sharif-Aminu is facing a death sentence merely for expressing his beliefs artistically through music. The US Senate should work swiftly to pass Resolution 458, which calls for the global repeal of heresy, blasphemy, and apostasy laws.”

Also the President of the African Bar Association, Mr Hannibal Uwaifo, has reacted to the sharia court ruling.
He said, “I call on the Attorney General of the Federation to step in and to stop this kind of sectional court from  making mockery of Nigeria. This is a country where people are stealing billions of naira and being given a pat on the back; then you say someone committed blasphemy, according to your own religion, and then you sentence him to death or sentence a teenager to 10 years’ imprisonment. I think we should stop making Nigeria a laughing stock.”

Nigeria On The Edge Of Bankruptcy - Punch

Anarchy looms....

Quote:The Federal Government’s retained revenue, which is the actual revenue realised before its augments with borrowed and deficit financing resources, is dwindling by the day.
It is dwindling when compared with the expenditure and the need for investment in all sectors of the economy.

However, the surprise is that this low revenue to expenditure situation is not making the headlines. We are stuck with headlines about permutations on the 2023 presidency, one year after the 2019 elections, incessant killings and corruption in high places. Nigeria is going bankrupt and it seems no one in a position of authority cares.

Last week, the media reported the interaction between the Minister of State for Finance and the House of Representatives Committee on Finance during the consideration of the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework 2021-2023. The minister stated that the retained revenue for the period January to June 2020 was in the sum of N1.81tn which represents 68% of the prorated target. Thus, we missed the projected revised revenue mark by 32%.

On the other hand, the Federal Government had spent N4.45tn within the period and this represents 89.3% of the prorated N4.99tn which should have been spent within the period in accordance with the revised budget. The implication is that we spent N2.64tn which we have not earned. The earned revenue of N1.81tn represents 40.2% of the overall expenditure of N4.45tn. Essentially, we have not realised up to 50% of our expenditure and the extra N2.64tn which is 59.8% of total expenditure is based on borrowing and deficit financing. Even if we got 100% of the revenue projection, we would still have been in great deficit.

The breakdown of the expenditure showed that N1.57tn was spent on debt service while personnel including pensions took N1.61tn. Combined, debt service and personnel amount to N3.18tn which is 71.4% of the overall expenditure.

The minister further indicated that by July, about N1tn had been released for capital expenditure which came up to 22.4% of the overall expenditure for the period. It is important to note that while other expenditures were stated as of the half year of June, it is the capital expenditure that we got the figures up to July, may be to shore it up a little. And the remaining money to complete the N4.45tn figure must have gone to statutory transfers.

The revenue performance showed that the Federal Government’s oil share was N859.1bn which is 169% performance and above the prorated sum in the reviewed budget.

This is understandable considering that oil now sells above the crude oil benchmark price adopted in the revised budget. Non-oil taxes totalled N581.23bn which is 72% of the revised target, being off the mark by 28%. This shows that we are not in control of the realisation of resources needed to fund the federal budget. The price of oil is not within our control and the fact that it has picked up in the international market has nothing to do with our inputs or managerial ability.

The non-oil taxes which are ours to administer did not meet the target. Even if it is admitted that the coronavirus pandemic had badly affected economic activities making it impossible to generate targeted non-oil taxes, the revenue generating capacity is still too weak to meet necessary expenditure.

The implications and breakdown of the foregoing figures show that if we are to live on our actual earnings, after paying salaries and pensions of N1.61tn, the Federal Government had only N200bn left in its kitty which was not enough to pay for debt service in the sum of N1.57tn, even if we are to discount capital expenditure of almost a trillion.

The crystalising fact is that we are borrowing to service previous accumulated debts. However, the minister stated that recoveries and stamp duty collection during the period had yet to be computed and added to the revenue. This raises the poser; why then is it taking so long to account for stamp duty and recoveries?

what has been the reaction of the government to this literal fire on the mountain fiscal scenario? Is anyone in government taking a haircut on his entitlements? Have we stopped the culture of waste?

Have we stopped the culture of corruption? It is within this period of poor revenues that the officials of the Niger Delta Development Commission awarded fat unapproved and illegal COVID-19 support to themselves. What action has the government taken on its proposed reduction in the cost of governance in terms of reviewing and making actionable the Oronsaye committee report?

In other climes, there should have been several expert groups working on how to shore up the finances in the short, medium and long terms. No, not in my dear country, Nigeria. We keep walking like drunks from one challenge to another and never resolving any.

The above figures show clearly that our debts have become unsustainable because in every sense of it, we are no longer able to service the debts, not even paying back, if we do not further borrow. Once any organisation or country has reached the state of borrowing to pay back previous debts, any attempt to put a spin to the debt crisis is an exercise in futility meant only to deceive the uninitiated.

The unfortunate aspect of it is the Federal Government has legislative approvals for new loans which have not been drawn down. Imagine what the ratio of the retained revenue to debt service will be when we draw down about $22bn more in loans. Playing the ostrich and hiding our head in sand will not solve this huge fiscal crisis. It will rather make it get out of hand.

So, where do we go from here? In considering the MTEF 2021-20123, the National Assembly should put a moratorium on all fresh borrowing; and take time to reconsider already approved but to be drawn down loans. But the bulk of their time should be spent on blocking leakages in the system.

They should also tell themselves the truth, which is that they can block leakages and stop corrupt practices if and only if they live above board because Nigerians are tired of the embarrassment of federal legislators being taken to the cleaners by officials called to account for their stewardship.

FAAN investigates allegations of Abuja airport officials collecting bribe from passengers on evacuation flights for COVID-19 clearance

The Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria FAAN says it has begun an investigation into allegations that some officials of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja were collecting bribe from passengers on evacuation flights.

There have been allegations that some of the airport officials demand bribe from the returnees for COVID-19 clearance. There have also been allegations that the officials collect bribe to help the returnees evade the mandatory COVID-19 test and isolation.

The Presidential Taskforce for COVID-19 had earlier announced that it has become mandatory for every returnee to undergo a compulsory COVID-19 test and go into a 14-day isolation to ensure they do not have the novel virus and also to prevent the spread of the novel virus.

In a statement released on Sunday, August 16 by its General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Henrietta Yakubu, FAAN said an investigation into the allegation has commenced.

Quote:''The recent allegation that some airport officials in Abuja were collecting money from returning passengers on evacuation flights is already being investigated by all agencies at the airport.'' the statement read in part

FAAN in the statement advised passengers to desist from giving money to airport officials and to report any official from any agency that requests money under any guise.

Insecurity: Falae, Bode George Ask PMB To Implement 2014 National CONFAB Report
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 08-17-2020, 08:51 AM - No Replies

Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

Quote:Chief Olu Falae, a former National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and one-time Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), and Chief Olabode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have advised President Muhammadu Buhari to dust up the 2014 National Conference (Confab) report for a guide on tackling the current security situation in the country.

Even though former President Goodluck Jonathan handed over the report to Buhari in May 2015, saying it was the most important document he was handing over to him, President Buhari said he would not implement any of the report, saying it is meant for the archives.

Speaking with Daily Independent, George, who said Nigeria was at the precipice, said the president must use the remaining three years in his second term to urgently address the issue of restructuring, especially creation of state police, to address the security challenges across the country.

On his part, Falae, the former presidential candidate of the defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD) and the All Peoples Party (APP) merger in the 1999 general elections, said leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) who were saying former President Goodluck Jonathan set up a booby trap for Buhari with the conference were not sincere.

He said the 2014 National Conference report was the key to the future of Nigeria if it is to be saved from explosion.

Falae, who noted that the resolutions reached at the Confab already contained the much-talked-about socio-economic and political restructuring needed for Nigeria’s progress, added that the report of the 2014 National Conference contained several resolutions and remedies that, if implemented, would tackle the upsurge of insecurity, banditry, and other vices bedevilling the country.

“They said Buhari is avoiding Jonathan’s booby traps and so he pushed the report to the archives. What is his own solution to the problems confronting Nigeria today?

“Avoid the booby traps but agree that there is a problem because that was why your party, the APC, set up a committee on how to have true federalism.

If you can’t implement the 2014 conference report, why are you not implementing the one set up by your party?

“Don’t you know that implementing that report will take many years and several governments and that, therefore, somebody has to start?

“Why can’t Buhari start it and let successive governments carry on and finally conclude it? What is wrong with that? They have no answer.

“That report of the 2014 Confab is going to be the future of Nigeria because during the Confab we had discussions and listened to one another on issues and we agreed on a consensus,” he said.

On his part, George, who is the Atona Oodua of Yorubaland, said the time had come for Nigerians to forget about their political, ethnic or religious divide and join hands to see how the country could be restructured.

That, according to him, was the only way to save the country from total collapse.

He said: “I am not talking as a PDP man; I am speaking as a Nigerian. At 75, if I can’t speak the truth to power now, then what am I living my life for?

“Number one, the structure we are using as a nation is very, very defective. We are more than 200 million in population. The total number of policemen we have is 400,000. How can that be effective?

“There is a need for us to have state police for effective management and protection of the lives of the people.

“The need to have restructuring is now. We cannot postpone it and we cannot continue to run this country under the present arrangement.

“So, the last two years of President Buhari, he must use it to see how best he can restructure Nigeria. He shouldn’t push the issue of restructuring under the table.

“The system is not working and has collapsed. We are at the precipice of total collapse.

“The last two years for him is to address the issue. Restructuring is the most topical issue in the country today.

“There is a constitutional report that deals with a lot of this issue; let him open it up and forget about playing dirty politics.”

George also appealed to the Federal Government to do more in the area of food security, saying many of those engaging in criminal activities were doing so because they were hungry with no hope of where the next meal would come from.

He said while the Federal Government was spending money on physical security such as procuring fighting equipment, it must also donate a substantial amount of money to getting youths engaged so that they can be beneficial to the society.

“Security is not only about physical security, there are so many aspects of security and it is the combination of all that you just refer to as national security.

“You have food security to guarantee that every Nigerian must be able to find something to eat every day.

“There is public health security which guarantees that anybody who is sick will be able to get treatment in any clinic.

“There is transportation security which ensures that those providing public transportation don’t misbehave or drive carelessly to injure their passengers.

“Number four is physical security, safety of lives, that people can sleep well at night without marauders, that people can travel long distances without being kidnapped, and armed robbery. The most important of this is food security.

“What is causing those people to be engaging in what they are doing? Joblessness, lack of half a meal per day.

“I have gone many times from Kebbi to Sokoto; from Sokoto to Zamfara; from Zamfara to Katsina; from Katsina to Kano; from Kano to Kaduna.”

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

MONDAY 17TH AUGUST.

YOUR WORDS REVEAL YOU

For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned (Matthew 12:37).
What kind of words come out of you and where do you get them from? Why do you say the things you say? These are critical questions for your heart. As a Christian, you ought to always examine your life, especially with respect to your words, because your words locate you; they reveal your character.

If a man’s words are hurtful and biting, then that’s who he is inside. But if your words are gracious, kind, uplifting and heart-lifting, that’s the character of your personality. You’re the character of your words.

Jesus said in Matthew 12:35, “A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.” As a Christian, you’ve got good treasures within you by reason of your divine nature in Christ. There’s excellence in your spirit. So when you speak, it should be out of that abundance.

Jesus also said, “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38). He was speaking of the Holy Spirit, which those who believe in Him would receive (John 7:39). Thus, the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life means you’re enabled to let out rivers of living water which come forth in words; divine words!

This means if a Christian speaks foul, brash or bitter words, he’s exuding an attribute that isn’t consistent with his true nature. James 3:11 tells us that fresh water and bitter water don’t issue from the same fountain. Yours is the fresh water from God’s fountain inside you. You don’t have a mix. You have only goodness and blessings within you, which are revealed each time you speak.

Your speech is the true measure of your maturity as a Christian: “…And if anyone does not offend in speech [never says the wrong things], he is a fully developed character and a perfect man…” (James 3:2 AMPC). Through your words, bring healing and life to others; bring them hope, strength and courage. Chart your course in victory, from glory to glory with your wholesome, faith-filled words.

CONFESSION

Through my wholesome, faith-filled words, I chart my course in victory, from glory to glory. By the power of the Holy Spirit, I speak life and wisdom all the time. I live in divine health, supernatural abundance and in continual success and prosperity, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Why we locked up shops of some Nigerian traders - Ghanaian authorities

Ghanaian authorities have explained why they locked up some Nigerian-owned shops in the country amid an ongoing controversy about the Ghana Investment Promotion Council (GIPC) registration.

Recall LIB reported earlier that the requirement for GIPC registration is $1 million minimum foreign equity, while registration fee is 31,500 cedis.

Reacting to the controversy that has trailed the GIPC registration in an interview with Starr News, Boakye Boateng, the head of communications in the country’s trade ministry said it would be unfair for the Nigerian traders to complain of insensitivity.

He further alleged that the traders were pardoned for over a year following the intervention of President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Boateng said;

Quote:“It cannot be that we’ve been insensitive. If that is what they’re saying, I’ll be  disappointed because I’ll rather say they have rather been unfair to us as a regulatory body because we have given them more time than enough to the extent even the Ghanaians thought that the ministry was not on their side or the ministry wasn’t ready to even enforce law.

“So, it’s very surprising to me for them to say that we’ve not given them enough time. If you recall as far back as December last year, these shops were locked, the president intervened and we asked that the shops be re-opened because the very law that gives GUTA the right to be the sole traders in our market, that same law requires that a certain group of people are those who can go and do law enforcement and not you, so allow us to do our work.

“They complied, the shops were opened. Since then we have given them an opportunity to regularise the document and submit it to us for verification, that has not been done. Now, this exercise started from Abossey-Okai on Monday. Because we have never been to Abossey-Okai  for this exercise, when we went there we did not just start locking shops.

We went there, we inspected the shops and we gave them notices that  in 14-days they should ensure that all their necessary documentations be complete. These people have been served notices for over a year now.”

Obaseki Rounds Off Campaign In Edo North, Vows To End Godfatherism

Quote:As PDP urges INEC not to allow Edo sleepwalk into disaster
The Edo State Governor and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in September 19, 2020, gubernatorial election, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has concluded his ward-to-ward reelection campaign in Edo North Senatorial District, with a promise to protect the interests of the majority of the people and bring an end to godfatherism, which he said is a threat to the growth and development of the state.

Obaseki made the promise while speaking to party faithful in Ward 7, Etsako West Local Government Area, on Sunday, and called on the people to support him in the fight against godfatherism by voting en masse for the PDP in the forthcoming governorship poll.

The governor said that the progress of the state has been held down for too long by the godfather, adding: “In three years and a half, my eyes have seen a lot in Government. We need people who know what they are doing in Government. We want to stop all this nonsense so that we can create more jobs and a better future for our people.”

According to him, “The election of September 19, 2020, is a very serious one; on that day, we have to tell them that Edo must move forward and bring an end to godfatherism.”

In Iddo Ward 8, Etsako West Local Government Area, Governor Obaseki thanked leaders of the party and members of his campaign team for their time and sacrifices throughout the campaign which began two weeks ago.

He also urged the people to defend their votes, promising to resolve the lingering kingship tussle in Afokpella.

2023: Showdown Imminent In PDP Over Secondus

Governors, chieftains oppose chairman’s second term

•Atiku’s camp, others back National Chairman

•Party elders seek dialogue over zoning

•Tension in Southwest

Quote:‘Dare Odufowokan, Assistant Editor

The aspiration of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche SeCondus, for a second term in office has sparked a fresh struggle for the soul of the party by various interest groups.

His current tenure is due to expire in December.

But with four months to go, prominent power blocs are said to have begun consultations and meetings on how to ensure that the next NWC of the party is manned by “their own people.”

Secondus’ re-election bid, well placed party sources said, is already being opposed by some prominent PDP leaders and chieftains who prefer a new person as the national chairman of the party ahead of the 2023 elections.

Governors, former presidential aspirants of the party and other leading lights of the party are among those gearing up to work against the re-election bid of Secondus.

But the PDP chairman still enjoys the backing of some other party chieftains who want him to lead the party to the next elections.

On his side, according to sources, are the political camp of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, a couple of governors, National Assembly members and the majority of the members of the current NWC.

Sources said opposition to Secondus’ second term may not be unconnected with allegations in some quarters that he favoured, and still favours, the Atiku political camp more than other blocs within the party.

“You shouldn’t be surprised if you discover that governors like Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto, among others, are opposed to the second term ambition of our chairman,” a source said.

The source said the looming intra-party struggle over who becomes the national chairman of the PDP is already an issue of serious concern among party elders.

His words: “For many of our elders and other stakeholders who do not wish to see PDP return to the inglorious days of internal crisis, this issue is already a matter of serious concern.

“Recently, a group of former chairmen suggested early dialogue as a way out.

“I am also aware that some founding fathers of the party met to discuss the future of the party.

“After their deliberations, they urged all parties in the dispute to reconcile their differences in order to ensure that the peace currently enjoyed by the party is not truncated.”

Another sources said some party members are uncomfortable with Secondus’ alleged romance with Atiku and “they do not want what happened in the 2019 presidential primary election to repeat itself.”

He added: “Many of them are still holding the belief that the process was manipulated by the NWC to favour Atiku’s emergence as candidate. Naturally, they want their own man in charge.”

Some Chairmen of the PDP in the South-West recently accused Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State of a surreptitious move to prevent the re-election of Secondus.

They said prominent party leaders in the zone would not support the move. The chairmen, Deji Doherty (Lagos), Clement Faboyede (Ondo), Dr. Sikirulai Ogundele (Ogun) and Sunday Akanfe (Osun), accused Makinde and Chief Bode George, former deputy national chairman of the party, of championing the plot in the zone.

The chairmen made the allegations in a letter to Secondus dated June 19, 2020.

They said: “We the undersigned are party chairmen in states of the South-West Zone, and we feel duty-bound to alert you on the need to forestall the festering of any crisis in the South-West zone of the party.

“In this respect, we take due notice of the invitation to a purported South-West Zone meeting which held on Friday, June 19, 2020, unilaterally summoned by His Excellency, Oluseyi Makinde, with no recourse whatsoever to the zonal executive.

“This development, if not arrested, may signal the beginning of terrible developments in our zone.

“We are also aware that factors propelling the simmering crisis included that of Chief Olabode to become National Chairman at all cost and also that of Senator Hosea Agboola, the current caretaker chairman of Ekiti State, to become national vice-chairman.

“These two men are exploring their closeness to the governor to prosecute inordinate ambition at the expense of the existing amity and understanding within the South-West Zone, which is currently being disrupted for this reason.”

Although George debunked allegations that Makinde wanted to make him national chairman, he confirmed the fact that the next NWC of the party was already being discussed and planned.

Quote:The candidate of the Zenith Labour Party and Ondo State Deputy Governor, Mr Agboola Ajayi, has picked a former Commissioner for Works, Mr Gboye Adegbenro, as his running mate ahead of the October 10 governorshp election.

Adegbenro, an engineer, was a commissioner during the administration of Olusegun Mimiko.

It was gathered that the deputy governor and the leadership of the party agreed on Adegbenro during a meeting.

The former commissioner’s name was said to have been sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission in order to beat the final deadline of the commission on Tuesday

The state Chairman of the ZLP, Mr Joseph Akinlaja, confirmed the development on Sunday.

He said, “Yes we have picked a running mate his name is Gboye Adegbenro. He would be announce tomorrow (Monday).”

Ajayi, who formally announced his defection to the ZLP last Friday in Akure after he had resigned from both the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party, is expected to kick-start his governorshp campaign any moment from now.

Please, Let Us Complete $5.3bn Loan From China – Amaechi Appeals To NASS

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Saturday appealed to the National Assembly to halt its questioning of Nigeria’s loan agreement with China.

Amaechi said questions from the National Assembly is likely to deter China from extending credit to the country, especially the $5.3bn required for the Ibadan-Kano railway.

He made the remarks during an inspection tour of the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail project which is being primarily financed by Chinese banks.

“They are not investigating corruption in construction,” Mr Amaechi said. “We want the National Assembly to allow us to get the loan for Ibadan to Kano, which is about $5.3bn.

“If you are telling the man who lent you money you don’t like the way he lent you, he won’t lend you any further.

“For this one (Lagos-Ibadan rail project), we have $1.6bn for which we are contributing about $200 and $300 million. But don’t forget, they have not finished paying, they can stop at any time.”

The House of Representatives had raised an alarm about the nature of loans received from China which, it said, puts the country’s sovereignty into question in the case of a re-payment default.

However, Amaechi has insisted the loans, which are primarily spent on capital projects built by Chinese companies, will benefit the country.

Na’Abba: Nigeria turning to police state – Arewa groups

The Coalition of Northern Groups, CNG, has expressed dismay that the continuous attempt to suppress the existence of the right of freedom of expression of Nigerians by President Muhammadu Buhari-led government is exposing its failure in sportsmanship, statesmanship and political craftsmanship.

The CNG said it finds it worrying that the current administration is becoming more and more intolerant of opposition and criticisms and gradually dragging the country towards becoming a police state.

Expressing its concerns on the state of the nation, its spokesman, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman in a statement issued on Sunday, said it is alarmed by reports that former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’abba, has been invited by the Department of State Services over the interview he granted Channels Television on Thursday regarding the agenda of the National Consultative Front to bring about a new Nigeria that works for all.

“We find this attempt to harass Na Abbah, a senior citizen and critical stakeholder in the nation’s democratic process, a brutal encroachment on the universal citizens right to freedom of expression which is a fundamental characteristic of any democratic state,” the statement explained.

According to the statement, ”it is ridiculous that those who run this government who happened to have benefited the most from the previous administration’s tolerant disposition should be the ones denying others the same right they enjoyed.”

It added, “The CNG repudiates this unhealthy, undemocratic trend of government’s exercise of power through security agencies to impose restrictions on citizens’ mobility, or on their freedom to express or communicate political or other views and hold it unacceptable.”

The group insisted that every Nigerian’s right to freedom of expression which is not only a primary cornerstone of democracy, but also prerequisite for the enjoyment of many of the other rights and freedoms ensured in our constitution and international conventions must be respected.

“We, therefore, find it absolutely unacceptable for a people who in no way bore the brunt of the struggle for the return to democracy to be hell-bent now on scuttling it,” it observed.

Innoson: I Received Order For $4.7m Cars From SierraLeon As NASS Rejects My Cars

Quote:I received order for $4.7m cars from S/Leone after NASS lawmakers rejected my vehicles– Innoson

…’Motorcycle price was crashed from N150, 000 to N60, 000, trying to do same with cars’
…Explains why auto assembly plants in Nigeria collapsed

Chief Innocent Chukwuma is the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of Innoson Vehicles Manufacturing, IVM, a foremost automobile maker in Nigeria.

In this exclusive interview after a facility tour of his Nnewi automobile factory, Chukwuma reveals the secrets behind his success in the automobile industry, why he has never failed in any business ventures, his major challenges, his new factory in Imo State and planned partnership with a foreign company. Excerpts:

Some Nigerians still think that Innoson is just an assembling plant and not a car production company. What is your status?

You are here now and you have seen things yourself. Let me use this opportunity to say this once again; Innoson does not assemble vehicles, we manufacture. We build 100 percent vehicle body here and over 60 percent of the products used in manufacturing the vehicle are gotten from Nigeria.

We make all the carcass of all our vehicles here. We only import some engines and electrical components but produce all the plastic parts here. We have produced many new vehicles according to the demands of our customers and what they need those vehicles for. Even if they need what we do not have, we make the mould and produce their request and to specifications. That is why we are a vehicle manufacturing company, not assembling company.

Despite the challenging terrain of the automobile industry in Nigeria, you have succeeded in

Yes, I started this business from the scratch. So, it may not be out of place to say that I have made a name for myself. However, I still believe that I haven’t reached where I want to be. It might interest you to know that I never fail in any business I have ventured into.

This is because when you go into any business, you have to put your own ideas in it and when you do, the difference will be clear and you can make more money than others. You can also drop the business when you think there isn’t much interest in it again. So, to succeed in any business, don’t follow the crowd, always bring your own initiatives. With that, you will be able to make profits.

That has been my driving force, always looking for new ideas that are different from what everybody knows. For example, when you are into a particular business and it is no longer as lucrative and profitable as it used to because many people have ventured into it, you can leave the business for those people who lack ideas and go into a new business. This is because, as they are coming into the business, the profit margin will continue to diminish. So you leave it for them and find another fresh business idea to develop.

By the time they understand or realise how profitable the new idea is, you have already made your money and leave it for them. However, if the business is still convenient for you and gives you what you want, you can continue.

But if you feel that what you are getting there is not enough, leave it for those people who came to spoil it and develop a new one. That is the system I operate. I started trading in motorcycle parts with my brother. I started by buying from companies like Leventis that were importing the parts then. From there, I started importing myself. Later, I developed a complete motorcycle and not just the parts. I was the first person to develop complete motorcycle in Nigeria.

Because of my experience in the spare parts business, I found out that to bring motorcycle parts and couple them here in Nigeria was cheaper than bringing them as a complete motorcycle. So I decided to give it a try and it worked. I brought my own in parts and hired local mechanics to assemble and couple them. With this, my own cost was 40 percent cheaper. So, while others were selling at N150, 000, I was selling at N80, 000. Then, the cost of second hand motorcycle was N90, 000. People who used to buy second hand motorcycle decided to be buying my own since it was brand new and cheaper.

That’s how I benched my competitors who were selling at N150, 000. So, they had no choice than to adopt my strategy in importing their motorcycles. When they started copying my method, I veered into local production of plastic components of motorcycle parts so that I could be bringing only the iron components from abroad.

This also helped in bringing the price of my motorcycle down to N60, 000 which has been my aim from the onset. My competitors also discovered that it was better for them to buy plastic components from my company than bringing it from abroad. So, they started buying plastic components from me. With that, I left the motorcycle business for them.

Venturing into vehicle manufacturing

After some time, I decided to do what I did in motorcycle in vehicle. So, that’s what I’m doing today. I ventured into vehicle manufacturing immediately I became weak on motorcycle. I changed my focus to vehicle. I studied about vehicle production for about seven years before I could start. When I was building this factory, all my good friends and everybody I knew were asking me why did I venture into the business?

They said all the people who ventured into it in Nigeria failed. I told them to check all the businesses I have done, that none has failed. Before I entered into vehicle manufacturing, I have seen why others failed. And I told them that I would remove that which made others to fail and I did. That’s why I started by manufacturing and not by assembling. The people who failed started by assembling vehicles in Nigeria. And in that case, if anything happened to the parent company, the assembling plant here would lose because foreigners are not interested in building anything here.

They are coming to Africa to make profit and not lose, they want to make as much profits as possible and go. They are not interested to build us.

So, to avoid the pitfalls of others, I went and studied where we had problems and I paid for professionals, expatriates who came here and trained my people. I brought them to Nigeria, about 60 of them, in the first year we started this factory. Some of them finished under one year and left by the second year, I had about 42 and in the third year, I had about 15. Today, I have only eight.

Most vehicle manufacturers are switching from petrol to electric engine. Are you thinking in that direction?

I never built engine for the first time. I only build body and buy engine. What we do here is building complete motor body. Therefore, if electric is better, what I will do is to partner with electric company to supply me electric engine. And in that case, I won’t lose anything. If electric vehicles become the new normal, we’ll switch over to electric

Where do you export to? Do you supply your vehicles to other African countries?

Yes. As of now, I have order of about $4.7million worth of vehicles from Sierra Leone. That’s what I’m producing now for Sierra Leone government. Normally, I do get order and supply from within and outside the country.

What kind of support have you received from the Buhari government?

The Federal Government is doing everything possible to support the manufacturing sector with good policies, but the problem lies in the implementation. They have done enough in terms of policies to support local content but, like I said, implementation is the problem. So, I won’t say that government is not helping. They are doing their best. If you look at the policies, they are favourable.

How’s government, especially the legislature and the executive, patronizing your company based on the ‘buy Nigeria, grow Naira’ mantra?

Didn’t you see what happened at the National Assembly recently? They decided to buy Toyota cars made in Japan, that they are too big to drive made in Nigeria cars. Didn’t you hear it in the news?

…I heard it. I also heard that it was the member representing you that objected to buying your vehicle…

I don’t know about that. Whatever the person representing me said doesn’t matter to me. All I know is that was the decision of the National Assembly. Anything all of them agreed is what they will do. You can’t tag it to somebody representing me because he’s just one person and he can’t decide for the entire lawmakers. So, if the NASS decides anything, he can’t stop them.

What would you say has been your major challenge in this business?

Well, in manufacturing, there are a lot of challenges. But when you know that such challenges would come, you make provisions for them because, if you don’t have space to accommodate any challenge, one or two problems will force you to close shop. Any manufacturer will tell you about energy or electricity situation in the country.

When we were starting the factory, we knew we had such problem. So, we planned it in such a way that power situation will not affect us. There was a time we didn’t use electricity from the national grid for four years. I ran generator for that four years.

The issue was that the electricity company was over-charging me. They were giving me more bills than what I was supposed to pay because it was based on estimated billing. They failed to realise that we have engineers here who can calculate what we use. We asked them to install prepaid meter for us but they refused. So when they wanted to act smart, we wrote them officially to disconnect us.

We bought four different sizes of generating sets for the factory according to what we were doing then. We were running the generators eight hours each everyday for four years until the electricity company agreed to install a prepaid meter for us because they found out that they were losing. So they brought prepaid meter for us and we paid. So, electricity has been our major challenge but we made provisions from the outset to accommodate it.

Another major challenge is scarce foreign exchange. It has become increasingly difficult to access foreign exchange to import some of the components we use. How can you be telling the President that you need foreign exchange? I know from his speeches, he wants manufacturers to get but some of us don’t get. We find it difficult to access foreign exchange, we don’t get at all. How can you be doing black market to do manufacturing? It is difficult. That’s why we are focusing more on export now to get foreign exchange to enable us to continue to run the factory.

What about the South-East governors, do they patronise you as one of their own?

Well, I will say that they are doing their best and even the Federal Government is doing its best in patronizing us. However, if all the South-East governors are like that of Imo, then, we don’t have problems. The present governor is number one in implementing the local content. He deserves an award for that. Go to Imo, all the vehicles they are using are made in Nigeria. So Imo has got somebody in the governor who knows what’s good to do and we appreciate him for that.

Have you considered partnering or merging with known foreign vehicle manufacturers?

Well, most of them want me to partner or merge with them. Yes, we are looking into it. I’m going to open a new factory in Imo in partnership with foreign companies. I believe the partnership will help us to develop motor manufacturing on a bigger scale in Nigeria
.

Is Imo government supporting you in that project?

Yes, Imo State government has indicated interest and they are supporting us. So, with my foreign partners, we will work together and develop it there.

Talking about siting of factory, what informed your choice of siting your factories in the South-East instead of the commercial city of Lagos?

Commercial city of Lagos is too busy. I want where there will be space for manufacturing. I’m also looking at the proximity with my other companies because, the way our companies were set up, factory A can produce something for factory B and vice versa. Another reason is for easy communications and management. I’m not interested in any particular region, be it South-East, South-West or North. It doesn’t matter to me. After all, I’m from Anambra but I have only one factory in Anambra, I have one in Enugu and will soon have one in Imo and Edo. Gradually, we’ll reach there.

Nigeria’s first indigenous vehicle manufacturing company, Innoson Motors’ G40 SUV.
Do you have any interest to contest for political posts such as President, governor?

Let me make it clear here that I am not a politician and I’m not interested in politics. I am a manufacturer. I will be an industrialist until I become weak. When I grow old I go home and retire. I don’t have time for politics. There are people who are politicians, let them continue with their politics. And as for the 2023 presidential election, I’m not interested in who is coming out. When the time comes, I’ll make a choice among those contesting. And I don’t know who I will vote for; it depends on who comes out

Police arrest man who allegedly killed woman, grandchild, niece, stabbed husband in Osun

The Osun State police command has arrested a 24-year-old man, Adewale Lukman, a suspected armed robber for the murder of three at Inisa in Odo-Otin Local Government Area of the state.

The suspect was said to have allegedly butchered his victims and stabbed Tunde Oyeniran, the man who was initially arrested for the crime.

Confirming his arrest, the state police spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola said the suspect was arrested on Monday and confessed to the crime.

She disclosed that Tunde had been released based on health ground.

She said, ” He was released on the medical ground because he sustained several injuries that have been giving him problem. He was released to go and take care of himself. We arrested the real suspect two days ago, and he has confessed to the crime.

But since we had apprehended the real suspect we had to allow him to take care of himself. He had been receiving treatment from the police hospital. He would be called on when needed. ”

It would be recalled that Tunde Oyeniran, a nurse was arrested for allegedly butchering his wife, grandchild and niece; and stabbed himself to cover up.

Speaking with DAILY POST about his ordeals, Tunde said he knew nothing about the crime he was initially alleged and detained for.

He explained that he was stabbed in seven places and his wife, grandchild and his wife niece were butchered by a suspected robber.

Tunde was released from Police detention after 18 days over a false allegation.

Tough, according to him, police later took him to Police Clinic when he complained about feeling dizzy.
According to him, the suspect, Adewale was an Engineer who was introduced by his late wife to repair a plasma television set sometime in March.

He further, that while offering his payment, Adewale took the suspect to an ATM machine to withdraw money for him not knowing he had secretly looked at him ATM security code.

He continued that It was his Assistant in his office who called his phone number and was told that the phone was seized for not paying hotel bills.
Tunde told DAILY POST that the suspect had withdrawn N300,000 from his account.

He said, ” On July 24 I closed from work around 8 pm to meet my family at Inisha I honked the horn severally but no one opened the door for me. I hopped out of my car to open the gate myself and drove in and entered my living room someone attacked me from the back and stabbed me with a knife on different parts of my body.

“I tried to defend myself but he overpowered me. I was seriously bleeding. He dragged me to my children’s room and locked me there. He took my phone and ATM from meand requested for the PIN. I gave him the wrong one but he said eh wanted my real PIN.

“I pretended as if I was dead. He left afterwards. I had before struggled to wrap clothes I could lay my hands on to reduce the blood coming out of me. Around 11 pm, I managed to get out of the house through the window, It had no burglary. I got to the main road where people saw me and took me to Seven Days Adventist hospital. They rejected me and I was later taken to a private hospital at Ikirun.

“The police and vigilante had been involved then. I told them to help me check my wife and children because I was yet to see them. I was told they were at the police clinic. The next morning the police came and took me away from the hospital and back to the Seven Days hospital.

I was later accused of killing my wife, grandchild and niece and was detained. It was my Personal Assistant who called my line and was told that my phone was seized for not paying hotel bills. He went to the police to inform them, and they went to the police.

I was shown the picture on my phone and I recalled he was the same guy who helped me repaired my television set in March. I remembered telling him to give me his account number, so I could transfer, but he wanted cash, so I asked him to follow me to the ATM.

I never knew he was watching me while I was using the ATM. I don’t know him from anywhere. It was my wife who introduced him to me.”

386 Injured Soldiers, Others Quit Military
User Avatar Forum: News

Quote:INSECURITY: At last, 386 injured soldiers, others quit military

The controversy over 386 soldiers who applied to disengage from the military amid the battle against bandits, terrorists and kidnappers in parts of the country may be over after the authorities fixed their exit date as January 3, 2021.

But they will proceed on terminal leave on December 3, 2020.

Sunday Vanguard learnt at the weekend that affected soldiers include those who have attained retirement age and others who are medically challenged as a result of the injuries they sustained in the battle against bandits and terrorists in parts of the country.

The personnel’s application for voluntary retirement and disengagement from service on medical grounds had stoked controversy after it was alleged in some quarters that it may not be unconnected with poor welfare conditions and adequate military hardware to tackle the myriad of security threats facing the nation.

But the authorities punctured the claim, saying it was the right of the personnel to apply for voluntary discharge on medical grounds and other approved guidelines in accordance with military terms and conditions of service.

According to a letter, dated August 12, 2020, and titled ‘Approval for Voluntary and Medical Discharge Soldiers for First and Second Quarters 2020’, the Army, said the 386 discharged soldiers were of 1979 Nigerian Army intakes and others.

The letter, addressed to the Nigerian Army Special Forces Command, Nasarawa, and copied to various military formations where the soldiers are currently serving, referenced the Harmonized Terms and Conditions of Service of the Armed Forces (2017 Revised).

Among others, the letter sighted by Sunday Vanguard, said, “In compliance with Reference A, the COAS has approved the voluntary/medical discharge of one Master Warrant Officer and 385 others.

“The soldiers are to proceed on terminal leave from December 3, 2020 while their disengagement takes effect from January 3, 2021 in accordance with the Nigerian Army Administrative Policy and Procedure number 27, Paragraph 3 and 4”.

Consequently, it directed all army formations and units to release the 386 affected soldiers to the Army Headquaters Garrison, Abuja, for documentation not later than October 1, 2020.

The formations and units are also to ensure that all forms of military controlled items, including arms, ammunition, uniforms and items of combat kits, are recovered from the soldiers prior to their disengagement date and certify that they are properly de-kitted.

Furthermore, they should complete all necessary documents in regards to withdrawals of NAWIS (Nigerian Army Welfare Insurance Scheme), BENFUND (Benevolent Fund Contributions), and National Mortgage Contributions.

The letter was copied to the Defence Headquarters, the National Defence College, the Nigeria Defence Academy, the Defence Intelligence Agency, the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, the Armed Forces Resettlement Centre, the Military Pensions Board and the Nigerian Army Training and Doctrine Command among others.

The letter, earlier requesting the voluntary retirement of the Master Warrant Officer and 385 other soldiers based on medical grounds and other pecuniary reason as contained in the TACOS, and submitted to the office of the Chief of Army Staff through the office of the Chief of Administration, was dated July 2, 2020.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state has reiterated his commitment in the fight against corruption.

Speaking during a visit to the state’s Public Complaint and Anti Corruption Commission on Saturday August 15, Ganduje urged the commission not to compromise the anti-graft war and further disclosed that he will not interfere in the prosecution of any political office holder in the state.

Ganduje said;

Quote:“Whosoever falls into the commission’s trap should face the consequence. I will have nothing to do with it. I will not interfere with any case whosoever might be involved.

“With the way corruption is fighting back and the fight against corruption being an agenda of President Muhammad Buhari, the federal government cannot fight it alone. It needs domestication in the states and the local governments to succeed.”

On his own part, the chairman of the commission Muhyi Magaji stated that they have set benchmarks in the country and are being emulated by other states because of the Governor's support.

Renowned Ifa priest, Chief Ifayemi Elebuibon, on Thursday, hosted the maiden anniversary of Progressive Witches and Wizards Association in Osun.

The meeting held at the Araba castle in Osogbo.

During the meeting, Elebuibon charged members of the group to seek knowledge about themselves and use their natural powers to improve their individual fortune and help the country.

He urged leaders and security agencies in the country to work towards putting an end to the shedding of blood.

He warned Nigerians, especially traditionalists not to engage in the killing of fellow men to avoid impending punishment hanging on people behind bloodshedding in the country.

Elebuibon said, “Eledumare is displeased with the shedding of the blood of innocent Nigerians. And there is grave punishment for that. It is happening in the north and down south. Political leaders and heads of security agencies in Nigeria must work to put an end to this. If they fail to do that, the consequences will be too heavy for this country.”

In her remarks, the coordinator of the group, Oyelola Elebuibon, opined that people have an erroneous idea of what witchcraft means, saying members of the group are “good husbands, wives, and mothers, that would always work for the progress of their families and well-wishers”.

She urged the witches and wizards to be of good behavior and put up acts that would encourage people of other faith to seek more knowledge about them.

Archaeology: Evidence Of Jonah And The Whale Found In Jerusalem (Photos)

Quote:[Image: 12137779_1_jpeg83b5009e040969ee7b60362ad7426573]

Archaeological discoveries made in the Holy Land could prove the Bible's account of Jonah, who survived in the belly of a whale for three days, a scripture expert has claimed.

The Biblical account of Jonah's misadventures has been controversial, with no solid evidence to back the Old Testament's narrative. Although Jonah's tale is considered by many to be a parable meant to teach about compassion and trust in God, there are some who believe there is more to the story than meets the eye.

Although incredible, Tom Meyer, a theologian at Shasta Bible College and Graduate School in California, US, believes there is archaeological evidence that could corroborate the story.

He told Express.co.uk: "In regards to archaeological evidence demonstrating the historicity of the account of Jonah, the idea of Jonah being resurrected from the watery grave was so believed and prominent in Jewish thought and practice that it became a motif on the ossuaries and tombs of early Jewish Christians.

"A first-century ossuary or bone box was discovered in Jerusalem with a rudimentary inscription of not only the name of Jonah but a rude sketch of him being vomited out of the whale.

"In later centuries the Jonah 'sign' became the quintessential expression of Christian belief in the resurrection with over a hundred examples of Jonah images in the Christian catacombs at Rome."

There also exists a first-hand account of a man who claims to have been swallowed by a whale.

Professor Meyer said: "In regards to the firsthand account paralleling Jonah, the Princeton Theological Review of October 1927 reports the story of James Bartley who, in 1891 was swallowed by a sperm whale and then rescued two days later by his fellow fishermen near the Falkland Islands.

"According to the report, the whale had attacked their vessel and Bartley was thrown overboard and presumed dead at sea.

"Two days later, the fishermen spotted the same whale floating upon the water, likely dead from constipation. "Upon skinning the whale, they discovered Bartley alive but unconscious inside the whale.

"Though according to the report his skin was bleached by the gastric acids and he was permanently blind from the incident, Bartley lived 18 more years and toured the world recounting his experiences as the modern-day Jonah.

"The only person on record to reject Bartley’s claims was the boat captain’s wife, who was not an eyewitness."

However, many historians are no convinced by Bartley’s account, finding inconsistencies in his story.

According to historian Edward Davis, the story may have been inspired by the Gorleston whale, a 30ft rorqual or baleen whale killed near Great Yarmouth in June 1981.

Similarly, biologists do not believe it would be possible for a human to be swallowed whole, let alone survive inside of a whale.

Dr Craig McClain of the Lousiana University Marine Consortium said: "I know that the oesophagus of a whale shark measures only inches across.

"The massive beast could not choke me down even if it preferred man meat to plankton."

Professor Meyer, however, is undeterred in his belief the Bible is a historically accurate document.

He said: "Jonah was a historical person and his account isn’t a whale of a tale but a true account that parallels the ministry of Jesus.

"The account of Jonah literally being in the belly of the great fish for three days and three nights and later coming back to life is given in the New Testament as the only sign Jesus ever gave to Israel."

Blame Service Chiefs for banditry, not Buhari – Governor Masari

Governor Aminu Masari on Saturday August 15, said that the blame for banditry should go to the country's service chiefs and not President Buhari.

The Governor of President Buhari's home state who said this while presenting a N10 million economic empowerment cheque to 1,000 women and N7 million scholarship support cheque to 701 students in Rimi Local Government Area of the state, insisted that the Nigerian leader has done all it takes to ensure security in the region.

Masari added that he can't understand why the service chiefs haven’t done more to help the region since they are all Northerners.

He said;

Quote:“We know them and their parents. To identify bandits in rural communities is not a difficult task, because you know his business, his farmland capacity, his livestock.

“And if one day he buys a new motorcycle amounting to over N200,000 naira, then you must know that he is selling people’s lives.”

Anger, Despair As FCDA Demolishes Houses In Apo NEPA, Abuja
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Edoman - 08-16-2020, 08:46 AM - No Replies

Quote:Residents of a community in a suburb of Abuja were left angry and picking up the pieces on Saturday after the Federal Capital Development Authority demolished their houses.

Officials of the FCDA stormed Apo NEPA in the early hours of the day and the bulldozers they commandeered quickly went to work pulling down buildings that had been deemed illegal.

By the time the bulldozers departed and the exercise, said to have been coordinated by the Chairman of the FCT Task Force on City Sanitation, Ikharo Attah, ended, residents said more than 100 houses had been demolished.

The exercise is said to have taken place months after the buildings were marked for demolition, according to officials who participated in the exercise. The community, whose residents are the original natives of the FCT, was reportedly on land meant for a road interchange and the residents had been asked to leave.

But the residents disagreed with the authorities and condemned the demolition, especially its timing with several of them telling Channels TV that some people were asleep when the crew arrived. They also said they were brutalised and tear-gassed.

Spokesman for the FCT natives, Yunusa Yusuf, insisted that the residents were not given adequate notice before the exercise was carried out.

According to him, the expected procedure is for the Department of Development Control of the FCDA to give a notice about the demolition.

“Nobody can say here that they came and gave a notice. There was no notice,” he told Channels Television. “Even if they say the people (in the community) settled here illegally, what notices did you give to them? How did you tell them that you were going to demolish their houses?”

Yusuf is also unhappy with the way the people were treated during the exercise.

“If you want to demolish houses, will the government now be the one tear-gassing people as if they are terrorists? How will you wake up by 4 am and by 4 am you have already taken over a community just because you want to access their houses?” he asked.

For Yusuf and many others in the community, the development increases the grievances of the natives of the FCT and exposes them to vices.

“This is the same government that has not been able to stop kidnapping, they have not been able to handle security, but, today, they can bring up to 300 security men to surround this community. It is very unfortunate. It is very unfortunate. This is not what we expect,” a visibly upset Yusuf lamented.

Officials said to be involved in the exercise could not be immediately reached for comments.

As residents went through the rubble of what was once their homes, several of them stopped to lament about what had happened. Their emotions ranged from anger, disappointment, sadness, and despair.

Some of the residents accused the security officials that came with the demolition crew of preventing them from getting their properties out before they pulled down their houses even though most of them were still asleep when they arrived.

“They can’t just come by 4 am just to demolish everywhere and chase us out. We don’t have access to pack our properties, we don’t have any means of surviving. Can the government live without the poor people?” a resident, who said he is a graduate of accounting but works as a dispatch rider because he couldn’t get a better job, lamented.

A woman backed his position, saying, “We were all sleeping in our houses before they brought caterpillars (bulldozers) with troops of mopols (mobile policemen), they started beating people – women, not even men. The women came out (and) were crying, they fired tear gas… They demolished everything.”

According to the woman, some people were still looking for their children at the time Channels TV visited the scene.

Continuing she said, “Without prior notice, you came at 4 am in the morning to demolish. Are we not Nigerians? Is this Nigeria not our country? After the lockdown, they never brought any palliative into this country. We stayed here for months, they locked us down; no work, no businesses. The next thing is to come and demolish our houses.”

Daily Devotional for Sunday 16th August

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

SUNDAY 16TH AUGUST.

NEITHER HELPLESS NOR FORSAKEN

Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee (Hebrews 13:5).

This is absolutely remarkable! The Lord says He’ll never, in any degree, leave you helpless nor forsake you. The Amplified Classic translation lets us know He repeated the clause “I will not” three times (for emphasis):

“…I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax my hold on you)! [Assuredly not!].”

This very scripture brings to mind the words of Jesus in John 14:18: “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.” Yes, Jesus is in heaven, but He didn’t leave us without support. He didn’t leave us desolate, bereaved, forlorn or stranded. He sent us the Holy Spirit, not only to be with us, but to live in us. That same Spirit has become your courage, your help, your sufficiency and your all.

Trust Him with your life. Fellowship with Him, and He’ll make you successful in all things. He says He won’t relax His hold on you; meaning He’s with you all the way in your journey of life, seeing to it that you win always. He knows how to take care of you.
His help is something you shouldn’t doubt at all; it’s guaranteed.

The Bible says He’s your “very present help in time of trouble” (Psalm 46:1). If you ever find yourself in trouble or a difficult situation, be assured you’re not alone; He’ll get you out or show you what to do to come out victoriously.

The Holy Spirit is your supreme advantage, refuge and strength. Acknowledge and appreciate His work in your life and love Him with all your heart.

CONFESSION

Dear Holy Spirit, I acknowledge you as the One who leads me in the way of success and victory. Thank you, for you’re my supreme advantage, refuge and strength; a very present help in trouble. I’m mightily helped of you, and therefore confident that my progress, prosperity and advancement is for all time, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

#TALKINGSESSION

KINDLY SAY THESE WORDS OUT LOUD.

Righteous Father, You have set me over the nations and over the kingdoms, to proclaim Your goodness and declare Your faithfulness to the ends of the earth.

Your righteousness is established in the nations, and the Gospel of Christ prevails and is glorified in all the earth.

I thank You for blessing me with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places, in Christ Jesus. I don’t lack anything good because all things are mine.

Thank You, Lord, for You have the right people to help me, at the right time, and in the right places.

I belong to Christ; therefore, I am the seed of Abraham and an heir according to the promise. I am Christ’s extension in the earth, His outstretched arm to a dying and hurting world.

I unveil His blessings and dispense His goodness, wisdom, and love; I am His light in a dark world. Hallelujah!

I am the living tabernacle of Almighty God; wherever I go, God goes; He lives in every fibre of my being,
every bone of my body, and every cell of my blood.

Nothing of darkness is in me. NO sickness, disease, or infirmity can lodge in me.

I cut out any disease-germ or growth that tries to attach itself to my body, in the Name of Jesus, and I continually glorify God in my spirit and my body as I walk in divine health today and always.

I am indestructible and can do all things through Christ who strengthens me from within, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

God bless you

Ghana To Deport 54 Nigerians For Illegal Entry, Vows To Secure Borders
User Avatar Forum: Other Stories
Posted by: Edoman - 08-15-2020, 08:26 PM - No Replies

Quote:A total of 54 Nigerians arrested for unlawful entry into Ghana through unapproved routes along the Ghana-Togo frontier are awaiting repatriation, officials of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) have said.

The illegal travellers are currently in the custody of Aflao Sector Command of the GIS.

They were apprehended at various unapproved routes within the last ten days and detained at the arrival hall of the Aflao GIS, pending their repatriation to their home country.

Aflao Sector Commander of the GIS, Frederick Baah Duodu, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the Service had begun processes to enable the illegal travellers to be deported to their home country.

"On Friday, July 10, some three officials from the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana led by one Daniel Tonibor were at Aflao to ascertain the arrest and condition of their compatriots in custody," he said.

Duodu said the suspects could spend some more time in custody to complete the processes for a successful repatriation exercise.

"The Nigerian officials in the country will have to activate processes to get an approval letter from the Togo and Benin Embassies. Of course, they will need to visit Ghana's Foreign Affairs Ministry to undergo some procedures to acquire laissez-passer for their citizenry.

"Besides, the suspects had undergone port health screening processes with their samples taken for COVID-19 test, which results are yet to arrive," he added.

The Sector Commander said though the arrival hall was not meant to serve as custody for illegal travellers, the circumstances had compelled the Command to keep the travellers there and assured that the officers were on alert to protect the borders.

Nigerian man charged in Uganda after allegedly being in possession of cocaine valued at 'N905 million' (photos)

A Nigerian man who was arrested in Uganda after allegedly being in possession of 320grammes of cocaine valued at sh244.4m (N905m), has been charged and remanded in prison.

37-year-old Madu Chima was arrested alongside one Ibanda Abubakali, 31, a security guard attached to Pinnacle Security Limited.

Appearing before Grade One Magistrate Abert Asiimwe, the duo pleaded not guilty to charges of acquiring prohibited goods, trafficking in a narcotic drug or psychotropic substance, and importing prohibited goods.

They also face charges of conspiracy to contravene a provision of the East African Community Customs Management Act and attempting to contravene a provision of the Narcotic Drugs Act.

According to the Act, any person who commits the offence is liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or to a fine equal to fifty percent of the dutiable value of the goods involved, or both.

Court heard that on August 6, 2020, at Makindye in Kampala, Madu Chima received a cocaine package from Ibanda Abubakali that was shipped by DHL Airway bill HAWB 2154260544  from Columbia via the United States of America, which package he knew or ought to have reasonably known to be prohibited.'

The two were arrested after Ibanda received a call from DHL to pick the consignment.

According to court document, when Ibanda got to the DHL office, he didn't have the tracking number and had to get it from his friend 'John' who in this case is Madu Chima.  As Ibanda was handing over the consignment to Chima, the pair were arrested.

During police interrogation, the duo denied knowledge of the content they received, but Chima admitted that the package was for his Nigerian friend, one Ozo, who failed to come for it due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Chima, according to the charge sheet, is a businessperson and a resident of Salama road, Makindye Division in Kampala.  He got to know  Ibanda from the Post Office, where he works as a security guard.

State Prosecutor Stuart Aheebwa, attached to Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) informed the court that investigations in the matter are incomplete and asked the court to adjourn the case.

"I pray for a long adjournment to allow police to complete investigations," he requested.

According to him, he would use that time to acquire a report that will be used to pin the accused of the crime during the hearing of the case.

This prompted the magistrate to remand the accused and advised him to get sureties of Ugandan nationals in a bid to get bail.

The case was adjourned to August 25, 2020.
