Daredevil armed robbers again struck on Saturday along the Okene-Lokoja highway in Kogi State killing two brothers and injuring a policeman on roadblock duties.

The incident which occurred at about 6pm in between Itakpe and Kabba Junction end of the Okene -Lokoja – Abuja expressway forced commuters and travellers to scamper for safety while abandoning their vehicles in the middle of the road.

It was gathered that the victims who were brothers and from the central part of Kogi State, went to Lagos for holidays and were on their way back to their station in Katsina State when the incident occurred.

DAILY POST further gathered that the robbers who were fully armed operated freely and later shot a yet to be identified police officer at a nearby checkpoint on the leg.

A woman who was caught up in the ugly incident but pleaded not to be mentioned on Sunday narrated her experience to told DAILY POST.

“We boarded our vehicle from Lagos around 7am but experienced heavy ‘go-slow,’ and not until after Ibadan, were we totally free from it.

“We got to Osara past 6pm. Our driver was following closely behind the vehicle that was attacked.

Somewhere, the driver had to stop for a passenger who was pressed, to urinate, after which we saw oncoming motors flagging us to stop; that there was a robbery operation ahead.

”Some people ran helter-skelter but the residents will not allow us to take refuge in their houses. They said that if they did, the robbers would fish them out one by one.

“After quite a while, other vehicles continued on their journey, but ours will not start. The driver made contacts and a motor mechanic came over from the Kabba Junction to attend to us.

“When we got to the point of the attack, we heard that two brothers were shot and killed, while a policeman at the nearby checkpoint was shot in the leg. We heard that their remains were later evacuated and deposited at the State Specialist Hospital in Lokoja.”

When contacted, the Kogi State Police Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), William Aya, said the command is yet to get a report on the incident but assured DAILY POST that he would furnish it with details as soon as he receives a report from the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, of the area.

The Federal Government has urged the State Governments to adequately prepare for heavy rainfall and flood in many parts of the country.

Sadiya Umar Farouq, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, gave the alert on Sunday.

In a statement by her spokesperson, Nneka Anibeze, Farouq, she advised states to identify high grounds for use as camps for the evacuation of possible Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

The Minister urged states to organise humanitarian coordination fora to prepare all stakeholders for mitigation and response.

“The recent flood incidences affirm the need for serious and urgent actions to be taken to safeguard lives and property against the predicted flood. The 2020 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction and the Annual Flood Outlook forecasts flood situations for different parts of the country.

“The Annual Flood Outlook forecasts that 102 Local Government Areas in 28 states will have heavy rainfall while 275 local government areas in the 36 states of the federation including the Federal Capital Territory will experience moderate flooding,” she added.

Farouq said the remaining 397 Local Government Areas fell within the low probable flood risk areas.

Noting that Bauchi, Kebbi and Jigawa States were already affected, she stressed the importance of an immediate/improved action.

The minister urged all relevant agencies to carry out public enlightenment campaigns, ensure the desilting of river channels and clear water channels and drainages

Nigerians worried like Obasanjo – Secondus blasts Buhari, APC

National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, has commended former President, Olusegun Obasanjo and other government critics for speaking the truth about Nigeria.

Obasanjo, on Sunday, declared that the country is dividing, a position that rattled the federal government.

.
But Secondus said majority of Nigerians share Obasanjo’s views and concern.

In a statement, Secondus berated the presidency, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and their supporters for playing to the gallery.

Secondus told them to embrace words of wisdom from patriotic elders, instead of attacking what is real and overwhelming to all citizens.

The PDP chairman advised President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC to absorb wise counsels, noting that the nation under their watch is going down.
He warned the presidency to stop abusing and disrespecting nationalists who fought for the unity of Nigeria.

The party leader condemned the multiplicity of taxation, tariffs and security challenges amid biting economic hardship.

Secondus, however, demanded a free, fair and credible election in Edo State on September 19.

He cautioned against militarization of the poll.
“To deploy military and other security agencies to do election duties outside the one statutorily assigned to them as was witnessed in 2019 general election and the gubernatorial elections in Bayelsa and Kogi State clearly undermines democracy.

“We saw and witnessed the gimmick in Osun, Bayelsa, Kano States where security operatives were used to disrupt polls at PDP strong areas leading to cancellation and the so-called inconclusive elections.”

Urging Edo people to reelect Governor Godwin Obaseki, Secondus admonished the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to be neutral.

Edo: Send soldiers guarding Oshiomhole to Boko Haram, bandits – PDP to Buhari

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to redeploy soldiers around former All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan, at a press briefing on Sunday condemned the drafting of soldiers to the Benin and Iyamho residences of the former Edo governor.

He said it was shameful and sinful that the Buhari presidency allegedly left people in Katsina, Kaduna, Benue, Yobe, Adamawa, Sokoto, Kogi and others states to be exposed to Boko Haram and bandits.
PDP accused the federal government of giving Oshiomhole cover to enable him to “perpetrate electoral heist.”

“Not even in the face of our current insecurity should such an impudent and inconsiderate action be considered,” he said while calling on Buhari to send the troops to their constitutional duty posts.

PDP further alerted that some people plan to use frivolous lawsuit to scuttle the September 19 governorship election.

The spokesman said Nigerians are already aware that Section 87(10) (11) of the Electoral Act prohibits the courts from restraining the conduct of party primaries and general election by INEC.

“This Section of the Electoral Act has put paid to situations in the past, where groups or individuals who have no real stake in elections were used as cannon fodders by selfish individuals and groups to manipulate the courts and frustrate the electoral process against the interest of the people.

“It is, therefore, clear that the aim of APC is to use the political groups to drag in the judiciary, trigger constitutional crisis in Edo State, the Niger Delta region and the nation at large and blame it on the court.”

PDP added that APC’s calculation is a re-enactment of the similar judicial quagmire that led to the scuttling of 1993 general election which led to a serious national crisis that almost destroyed Nigeria’s existence.

Aviation Unions, on Monday, shut down the operations of Arik Air for allegedly owing its staff.

The union claimed Arik Air has not paid its workers since April after placing 90 per cent of its workforce on compulsory leave and other anti-labour practices.

The unions included the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and Air Transport Senior Staff Services Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN).

NAN reports that all Arik Air operations in Lagos State were shut down.

Mr Innocent Atasie, Chairman, ATSSSAN, Arik Air Branch told NAN that the workers resolved to shut down Arik operations nationwide when all efforts made to resolve the problem failed.

Atasie said that the unions were miffed that there had been no payment of staff salaries since April after placing 90 per cent of the workforce on compulsory leave.

Trader crushed to death in Lagos by 16-year-old trying to move his mum's car which was obstructing traffic (photo)

A 50-year-old trader, Mrs. Tuale Iwejim, has died after she was hit by a 16-year-old boy who was using his mother’s SUV to test his driving skills at the Arena Shopping Mall, Oshodi, Lagos State.

According to a report by Punch, Tuale was in the shopping complex to purchase some items for her shop when she was knocked down by the SUV. The teenager and his mum were in the shopping complex to pick up some times.

His mum went back to pick their remaining items and asked him to wait in their vehicle. While waiting, some persons began to complain that the SUV was obstructing the free flow of traffic in the complex. Instead of informing them that he couldn't drive, the teenager took the keys from his mother's bag and hopped on the driver's seat. He was said to have put it in reverse and hit the 50-year-old two times.

Mrs Iwejim was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba, Surulere, where she had surgery before her death on Thursday, September 4, 2020.

Her husband, Christopher Iwejim, who recounted the unfortunate incident said

Quote:''We were told that the boy and his mother went to the market to buy some things. After they did, the woman asked the son to wait for her in the car so that she could go and pack the remaining items.

“While the boy was inside the car, somebody shouted that the vehicle was obstructing traffic and asked the occupant to park well. Instead of him to say he was not the driver, he took the key from the mother’s bag and started driving.

“He managed to engage the gear on drive, but forgot to use the brake. That was how he hit Tuale. While struggling to put it on reverse, he hit her again. She sustained what I will call first degree injuries on both legs from her waist down. The boy also damaged some billboards and structures in the market.”Iwejim said

The N400,000, which the Delta State indigene borrowed to buy goods in the market, was stolen while she was being extricated from the wreckage.

The son of the deceased, Amos, said his mother spent about three weeks at the hospital, where doctors battled to save her life.
Quote:“When the accident happened, she was stuck in a gas cylinder, and when they tried to remove her, some parts of her flesh got torn. Her hip bone was divided from her body. It also appeared like there were iron rods in her leg and there was a hole in the leg” he said

The family of the deceased said they reached an agreement with the family of the teenager to share the medical bills 50-50. However, the teenager’s mother identified as Victoria Ogunleye, was said to have showed up at the hospital twice with N100,000 on each occasion while the family of the deceased spent as much as N1.5m.

The son of the deceased frowned at the military's decision to release the confiscated SUV of the Ogunleye's to them despite the fact that his mum was still in the hospital.
Quote:“The military police called my dad and said the woman wanted to pick her vehicle, and he told them not to release it. But to our surprise, they released the vehicle to the family.

LUTH later said they wanted to perform a surgery on her. A day after the surgery, she became unstable and they called my dad to ask if he could afford the ICU, because her breathing was not good. He agreed. They put her there, but she passed away the third day.”

After her death, both families had a meeting where the Iwejims demanded that the teenager's family bear the cost of burial and fulfill the agreement to share the medical cost by 50 percent.

The Military is yet to comment on the incident.

Union unrest: Arik Air writes Ministry of Labour explains position, seeks intervention
13th September 2020

ARIK Air, in the face of the union’s threat to down tools tomorrow Monday, September 14, 2020 have written to the Minister of Labour and Employment appealing for an intervention in seeking for the understanding and cooperation of the workers’ unions; while explaining some key issues in the disagreement

This is just as the airline states that the issues in dispute cannot pass the test of fairness and the unions’ leadership has abused their position without exhausting various channels of engagement, discussion, and consensus.

Nigerianflightdeck obtained a letter titled: Re-Unions in Arik Air Threaten to Down Tools September 14 dated September 11, 2020 written by Chief Executive Officer, Arik Air in Receivership, Captain Roy Ilegbodu directed to The Honorable Minister of Labour and Employment which had in copy the Honorable Minister of Aviation, and the Director General, NCAA.

The letter in part strongly condemned the planned action stating: “We strongly believe that the threat of strike action without an exhaustive use of the various channels of engagement, discussion, consensus and understanding is faulty and unlikely to yield the best outcomes for staff, the company and its faithful passengers. It is in fact an abuse of the position of union leadership as the issues in dispute cannot pass the test of fairness and only affect, in the short term, less than 20 staff out of a work force of over 1600.

It went further to explain that prior to Arik Air Ltd going into Receivership employment letters basically detailed the approved emoluments of staff however, since the commencement of the receivership, this has been expanded by the introduction of policies to create best practice work environments to deliver top notch services.
The letter also stated that in addition, management has been in discussion with various staff groups and unions to have these policies codified into Staff Conditions of Service but the only area of conflict was a request by unions for a terminal benefit scheme over and above the requirements of the Pension Act.

The letter read,” The only outstanding area of difference is the request by the unions for a terminal benefit scheme over and above the requirements of the Pension Act.

They request for an independent retirement benefit scheme that will be wholly funded by the airline where retiring, resigning and terminated staff will receive a lump sum payment upon exit that will in some cases double the joint contribution of management and staff under the Pension Act of 2004 as amended.

“While it is the right of staff to share in the prosperity of a company, the request for an additional retirement scheme from a loss making company, in receivership and whose operations are supported by creditors over and above legal requirements is simply onerous.

“Given the cost driven challenges in the aviation sector that have seen majority of airlines fold up in the past years, the request by the unions will set an unsustainable standard for other airlines that are struggling to survive in these difficult times.

The letter continued,” Notwithstanding, management restates its commitment to appropriate staff welfare and will do its best to keep workers motivated within the limit of available resources.

We can report with much gratitude that financial creditors have all suspended demands for repayment to ensure the stability of the airline. We are also enjoying the support of fuel suppliers, aircraft parts suppliers and various Maintenance, Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul organizations (MRO) while carefully managing the COVID-19 challenge.

“This is the kind of understanding and support we urge all our staff to imbibe so that we can ride the times and soar.

2 siblings allegedly rape 7-year-old girl in Anambra

Chidimma Ezeokoli, aged 23, and his 11-year-old brother (name withheld) have been accused of repeatedly raping a seven-year-old girl in Oko, Aguata, Anambra state.

The mother of the alleged victim, Miss Chinenyenwa Ozulumba, 27, spoke out on Sunday, September 13, in Awka. She said the boys who allegedly raped her daughter are the sons of her landlady, Mrs Nnabuife Okoli.

Ozulumba, a single mother, said her daughter was defiled by the boys because she trusted them and entrusted her to their care whenever she went to work in a nearby bar.

She said the accommodation was secured for her by her employer, who is also from Agulezechukwu town where she hails from, and because she did not want to expose her little daughter to her work environment due to the social hazard, she decided to always leave her behind with her landlady whom she had taken as her adopted mother.

On Aug. 22, a day she did not go to work, she said she overheard the landlady's children making jokes of their escapades whenever she was away and after a while, her daughter began to cry.

Ozulumba said when she asked her daughter what the matter was, she told her that she and the sons of the landlady used to have sex.

The young mother said when she drew the attention of the landlady to the revelation, she didn't take action.

The mother of the victim said: "A 23-year-old boy and an 11-year-old boy have allegedly been defiling my daughter; when I got to know about it, I reported to their mother and she did not show any form of amazement or remorse, making feel that she was aware of it.

"At that point, I took my daughter inside and sent for the younger boy who confirmed to me that it was true that he was having sex with my daughter in front of his elder sister.

"The minor recalled that there was day they were having sex with my daughter and she was crying but their mother did not react to her anguish.

"When Chidinma heard that I am now aware of the rape going on with my daughter, he started threatening to beat me up, asking if I did not do it while growing up.

"At that point, their mother joined in threatening violence against me and my daughter.

"That was how they started threatening to beat my child and even take her to a shrine if she dares to include the name of the 23-year-old again, telling her to say that it was only the 11-year-old that slept with her."

Ozulumba said that after she discovered her daughter had been defiled, she visited the Police several times, as well as the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Awka. for her daughter to be examined.

Ozulumba recalled that at COOUTH, after examination, she was verbally informed that there was penetration but they refused to make the report available, thus making it a challenge for her to prove her case.

She said she also reported the matter to the Police Area Command, Uga, Aguata, where she was issued a Police Medical Report form but was not able to get the report after visiting COOUTH repeatedly for three weeks.

She said: "This became a challenge for me, as the doctor that examined my child refused to write the report and the Police said they needed the result so they can charge the matter to court.

"That was how I later went to the Enugu-Ukwu General Hospital for another examination, where she was tested and scanned and we were issued a report."

The report showed that the hymen was torn, and some bruises were on it," she said.

Ozulumba said her former employer and landlady had been threatening her to withdraw the matter or face untoward consequences.

She said a Police officer visited her village and invited her to come to the Police X-Squad Unit in Awka with the aim of making her a defendant in her own case.

Ozulumba said she had visited the Police X-Squad in company of the Coordinator of Child Rights Brigade International (CRIB), an NGO, where she and her child were asked to make statements.

"All I need is justice for my daughter, I am not with anybody in this matter but God and people of good heart; the suspects should be made to face the law and prove their innocence and if they are found guilty, they should be punished so that others will learn not to take advantage of the girl child,” she said.

Mr Obiora Nnaemeka, Coordinator of CRIB in Anambra, said the matter was reported to their office on Sept. 3 and they had been following the development since then, assuring that they would stand by the victim and her mother in the course of the crisis.

Ezeokoli, mother of the suspects, told NAN that "nothing happened, the girl is just trying to rope them; it only involves the small boy."

FG kicks as Health Workers begin Nationwide strike today

Health workers under the aegis of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) have begun their planned strike, to press home their demands.

The action took effect at 12 a.m on Monday, September 14.

JOHESU President Josiah Biobelemoye, who confirmed the strike to newsmen, said the health workers had given the Federal government a 14-day notice of the impending strike but they failed to meet their demands.

Biobelemoye said the demands of the health workers include COVID-19 hazard allowance; withheld salaries; non-adjustment of the CONHESS salary structure; implementation of several court judgments; and repairing of several decaying health structure and infrastructure across the country.

Biobelemoye said a meeting held with the Federal government on Sunday, September 13, ended in a deadlock, so all health workers are to down tools beginning from today.

Quote:'The 15-day ultimatum still subsists, and with effect from midnight of Sept. 13, 2020, our members shall withdraw their services due to the government’s inability to meet their demands,” he said

However, the Ministry of Labour and Employment has described the strike by the health workers as illegal and ill-timed. In a statement released by its Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations, Charles Akpan, the Ministry directed JOHESU to shelve the planned strike, saying going ahead with it would be illegal.

The statement titled, ‘FG declares JOHESU strike is unnecessary, ill-timed and illegal’, partly read:

Quote:“Parties in disputes are expected not to arm-twist, intimidate or foist helplessness on the other party while negotiations are ongoing as per sections 8 and 18 the of Trade Dispute Act 2004 barring any strike when the matters are before a conciliator and undergoing conciliation.

“Any strike now is inimical to an equable settlement of the dispute, bearing in mind, especially, that this is a grave period of a pandemic where the Federal Government has spent about N20 billion to pay April/May 2020 and an additional N8.9b for June 2020 on COVID-19 hazard and inducement allowances, respectively, to all categories of health workers that are mainly JOHESU members.”

Yahaya Sharif-Aminu Death Sentence: Falana Drags FG, Kano To African Commission

Quote:Falana drags FG, Kano to African Commission over death sentence on singer

…As commission acknowledges petition

Human Rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Femi Falana, has petitioned the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Banjul, Gambia, over the death sentence on Kano singer Sharif Yahya Sharif.

Falana, in the petition dated September 8, 2020, sought from the Commission to exercise its mandates and authority under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and pursuant to the commission’s order 100(1) of the commission’s Rules of Procedure, 2020.

Recall that on August 10, 2020, the Upper Sharia Court sitting in Kano, Kano State convicted Sharif Yahaya Sharif of blasphemy against Prophet Mohammed, PBUH, and sentenced him to death by hanging contrary.

The petition, reads in part: “Our communication details multiple violations of his right to life and fair trial rights guaranteed under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and resolutions on moratorium on executions adopted by both the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly.

“Despite their obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and other international treaties to which Nigeria is a state party, the Nigerian authorities continue to violate the fair trial and other rights of the petitioner. The request for a certified true copy of the judgment of the Court was also not granted on time.

“An appeal at the Kano State High Court against the conviction and death sentence imposed on the petitioner has been filed, but we submit that the petitioner will not enjoy a fair hearing, as he continues to face imminent execution by hanging,” Falana stated.

Dauda Kahutu: Rarara Receives N57M Donations To Release New Song For Buhari - SR

Quote:President Buhari’s Praise Singer Receives N57m To Release New Song For Him

President Muhammadu Buhari’s praise singer, Dauda Kahutu popularly known as Rarara, has received not less than N57m to release a new song in favour of the President.

Kahutu got the funds less than 48 hours after asking for money to release a song in favour of the President.

The singer, who was in 2019 appointed as National Director of Music for the Buhari 2019 Presidential Support Committee, on Friday in a video on social media solicited funds, asking each person to donate N1,000 before he releases the song.

He also said financing the new song will show that there was no suffering and that Buhari’s government was doing well.

In the video, the praise singer said, “I will sing a new song in praise of Buhari until Northerners paid for it.”

He went on to read out an account number into which donations will be sent

Less than 48 hours after releasing the video, SaharaReporters gathered that the praise singer had raised a huge sum running into millions of naira.

Some ardent supporters of the President made donations and shared evidence of payment on social media.

Some wealthy Northerners and Buhari’s supporters also donated huge sums for the release of the song, sources disclosed.

“The praise singer had earlier said the claim of suffering in Nigeria is a lie spread by what he referred to as useless people.

“He got N57m in two days with 48 Northerners donating N13.7m.

“The singer, in recent days, has been giving out cars as gifts, a part of what he described as a sign that Nigerians are doing well under Buhari,” a source aware of the song project told SaharaReporters.

Rarara had released songs for some governors in the All Progressives Congress including Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna, Mohammed Badaru of Jigawa and Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano.

Recall that angry youth in Katsina State attacked the musician while he was shooting a video for the President.

According to Katsina Post, the youth attacked the musician at the Central Market in Katsina, the state capital, as he was shooting a video of his latest song “Jahata Ce”.

The aggrieved youth upon seeing the singer, started shouting and condemning him in Hausa language.

Daily Devotional for Monday 14th September

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

MONDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER.

HE WANTS YOUR HEART

My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways (Proverbs 23:26).

In the verse above, the words, “perfect” and “complete” could have been interchangeably used. In other words, in the place of “perfect” above, you could also have “complete,” and vice versa.

People are the same, irrespective of their condition. That is to say, the poor and the rich, for example, are exactly the same, except there’s a transformation in their hearts. If a man is poor and wicked, he won’t be different when he becomes rich. While poor, he doesn’t have the resources to carry out the wickedness in his heart. So, when he becomes rich, he’s able to prosecute the wickedness in his heart with his resources.

Money amplifies character. People only carry out the good or bad in their hearts, depending on their resources. Jesus said, “Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt…” (Matthew 12:33).

This means people aren’t different from how they are inside. So, what does God want? He wants a change in your heart; a transformation inside.

That’s why He sets up His kingdom first in your heart. He puts His love first in your heart. Your heart is where He seeks to work; that’s where all His blessings are. Then from your heart, they can flow out to others. Being born again, you have the life and nature of God in your heart; and now in Christ, you’re a life-giver.

The transformation and glory evident in your soul and body are the result of the impact and influence of the life and nature of God in your spirit. In our theme verse, He says, “My son, give me thine heart….” If you’ve never been born again, this is your moment; give Him your heart. Turn to the Prayer Of Salvation page at the back of this devotional and pray that prayer, from the bottom of your heart.

PRAYER

Dear Father, thank you for setting up your Kingdom in my heart. With my heart, I envision and apprehend the realities of the Gospel and of our Kingdom-life. I pray for the unsaved around the world, that their hearts be open to receive the Gospel, and be saved; that your power for salvation will mantle their hearts even now, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

#TALKINGSESSION

KINDLY SAY THESE WORDS OUT LOUD.

Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for the revelation of Your personality. You’re the complete embodiment of Deity!

Therefore, today and always, I celebrate Your divinity, Your Lordship, and rulership over my life. You’re the Most High God, the King of kings and Lord of lords, and You alone are worthy of all praise, worship, and adoration.

I thank You blessed Father, for the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ that floods the earth, resulting in the massive salvation of souls around the world!

The power and influence of Satan are broken and the hearts and minds of many are open to receive the message of the Kingdom.

Lai Mohammed: Buhari Prevented Nigeria From Becoming Failed State
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 09-14-2020, 08:10 AM - No Replies

Quote:In an apparent response to criticism by a former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria’s information minister, Lai Mohammed, said President Muhammadu Buhari’s efforts prevented Nigeria from becoming a failed state.

PREMIUM TIMES reported Mr Obasanjo’s Friday statement that Nigeria was “fast drifting to a failed and badly divided state. The presidency in a separate statement Sunday replied Mr Obasanjo, describing him as Nigeria’s ‘Divider-In-Chief’.

In his statement sent by his spokesperson, Segun Adeyemi, Mr Mohammed did not mention Mr Obasanjo’s name but said, “Those who genuinely love Nigeria will support, rather than subvert,” Mr Buhari’s “committed leadership.”

Read Mr Mohammed’s full statement below.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s assumption of office in 2015 prevented Nigeria from becoming a failed state, after a long stretch of rapacious and rudderless leadership, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has said.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, the minister said President Buhari came into office at a time that a swathe of the country’s territory was under occupation, a period when many Nigerian towns and cities, including the capital city of Abuja, were a playground for insurgents and a moment that the nation’s wealth had been looted dry, with little or nothing to show for the nation’s huge earnings, especially in the area of infrastructure.

He said it is, therefore, a cruel irony that those who frittered away a great opportunity to put Nigeria on a sound socio-economic footing, at a time of financial buoyancy, and those who planted the seed of the insecurity in some parts of the country today, are the same ones pointing an accusing finger at a reformist government.

”Nigeria today faces a lot of challenges. But whatever situation the country has found itself in, things would have been much worse but for the deft management of resources, unprecedented fight against corruption, determined battle against insurgency and banditry as well as the abiding courage of Mr President in piloting the ship of state,

”Nigeria today is not a failed state, but a nation that is courageously tackling its challenges and building a solid
infrastructure that will serve as the basis for socio-economic development, a nation that is unrelenting in battling insecurity and working hard to ensure greatest prosperity for the greatest number of people,” Mr Mohammed said.

He said no government in the history of the country has done so much with so little, as the Buhari Administration is doing presently adding that with 60% less national income, the administration is making progress on all fronts and setting the country on the path of sustainable growth and development.

The minister said while naysayers are hyping the instances of insecurity in the country, they have conveniently forgotten that the country could have been overrun by insurgents and bandits if President Buhari had not rallied regional and international allies to tackle, headlong, the Boko Haram insurgency that saw bombs going off like firecrackers before his assumption of office, and an estimated 20,000 square miles of the nation’s territory occupied by insurgents

”They tout the downturn in economic fortunes without putting things in context. With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing a global shutdown and a drastic fall in global oil demand, Nigeria lost 60% of its earnings, yet the administration has ensured that not a single worker has been retrenched, has paid salaries as and when due and has continued to build infrastructures like roads, rails, bridges and power, among others, that will serve many generations.

”They aggravate the national fault lines with their angry and unguarded actions and rhetoric, forgetting that while national fissures are amplified at a time of dwindling economic fortunes, what is needed to foster peace and unity is not reckless elocution but responsible and responsive leadership, the kind being offered by President Buhari,” he said.

Mr Mohammed said Nigeria is on the road to greatness, despite the challenges confronting the nation, citing the hard push towards food sufficiency; the modernization of the rail system; the nationwide construction of roads and bridges; the reform in the oil and gas sector; the unprecedented anti-corruption battle, the diversification of the economy and the renewed effort to ensure a steady power supply, anchored on a three-phase project that is expected to deliver 25,000MW of electricity in the next few years.

The minister thanked Nigerians for their perseverance and understanding, especially against the backdrop of the stifling effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy, and appealed to them to continue to support the administration, as it seeks to lift 100 million people out of poverty in the next 10 years.

”In one of the most difficult moments in the nation’s history, Nigeria is fortunate to have at the helm a leader who is not only dedicated, selfless and patriotic, but one who is globally acknowledged for his discipline, integrity and vision. Those who genuinely love Nigeria will support, rather than subvert, this committed leadership,” he said.

17 members of a family reportedly abducted in Kaduna

17 members of a family have reportedly been abducted by yet-to-be-identified men who stormed their village, Udawa in Chikun local government area of Kaduna state this weekend.

According to reports, the gunmen in two separate attacks abducted a total of 21 persons.

Confirming the abduction to newsmen, Liman Hussaini, a community leader in Udawa village, said the gunmen arrived in their village and began shooting sporadically into the air. He said four persons were abducted on Friday, September 11 while 17 others were abducted on Saturday morning, September 12 while on their way to the farm.

Quote:“Yesterday, a family of 21 were going to the farm, but about one and a half kilometres away from home, they were attacked by gunmen. Four of them sustained serious injuries from gunshots while 17 of them were abducted.

Also, on Friday, at about 7am, four people were abducted while on their way to the farm.

You know there is serious hunger. People are finding it very difficult to feed, but now that the maize is done, many families depend on it to feed. We have started harvesting maize which we use for feeding because there is no food.

The head of this family of 21 was riding on a bike with one of his sons and two daughters to the farm when the bandits opened fire on them after abducting 17 members of the family.

The man was shot on the leg; the son was shot in the mouth. One of the daughters was shot on the chest; the other daughter was shot on the hand. The four of them were taken to a hospital in Kaduna.” he said

He said the gunmen went away with the victims before security agents got to the village.

The Kaduna state police command is yet to react to the recent development.

APC blasts Obasanjo, Atiku over ex-president’s latest attack on Buhari

on
 September 13, 2020

The All Progressives Congress, APC, on Sunday lambasted former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his latest attack on President Muhammadu Buhari.
Obasanjo had said Nigeria was fast becoming a failed and polarized state under Buhari’s administration.

However, APC’s Deputy spokesman, Yekini Nabena said Obasanjo lacked the qualities to criticize Buhari’s administration.

In a statement he signed, Nabena said Obasanjo and his former deputy, Atiku Abubakar, midwifed most of the rots in Nigeria today, hence can’t chart a course for Nigeria.

Nabena challenged the former president to explain how his administration spent $16 billion on power without providing electricity.

He also asked that Atiku Abubakar give an account of privatisations under him while he was Vice President.
According to Nabena: “It is baffling that the same political actors that midwifed and institutionalised the national rot, corruption, impunity and erosion of our value systems are the same characters posing as voices on the way forward in our national life. How ironic!

“Former President Olusegun Obasanjo could start with telling us where the electricity is despite $16 billion he spent on the power sector.

“Obasanjo’s deputy, Alh. Atiku Abubakar should account for the privatisation exercise under his watch which saw national assets sold off to friends and cronies with no benefit to the country.”

He also said the succeeding Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administrations should account for the billions allegedly stolen under the “guise of a fraudulent fuel subsidy regime.”

Nabena added: “These political actors probably only listen to their own voices because Nigerians have long stopped taking them seriously
as they simply lack the antecedents and moral credentials to guide Nigeria and Nigerians to the path of prosperity and progress.

“Instead of the “do or die” lingo they introduced to our electioneering, votes are beginning to count as our elections improve steadily.”

Lagos community cries for help, begs state govt as flood threaten lives, properties

The residents of Old-Ewu and Ogunyinka Mafoluku communities in Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area (LGA) of Lagos State have cried to the state government to save them from the flood in the community.

Both vehicular and pedestrian movements have become difficult in the community when it rains, as residents have to battle to cross the heavy flood.

The most affected streets include Ilare Close, Muse Oyinbo Close and Tijani kashimawo Close off 7/8 bus-stop, facing the First bank along Airport Road.

Other affected places are Dominican school, Saint Jude Catholic Church and Domino shop in Mafoluku Oshodi.

The cause of the flood was traced to the bad drainage system in the community and lack of gutters in some streets, hindering the free flow of water.

Affected residents have taken to wearing rain boots when going in and out of their houses to protect themselves.

Speaking for the residents, the Community Development Association (CDA) chairperson, Mrs. Durotola Akinyemi said they need the help of the government to fix the gutters in the community.

She lamented: “Flood has taken over our community. We move around in rain boots despite the fact that we cleared the drainage last year yet, we are still experiencing flood. We need the intervention of the government to fix our drainages to save us from the flood.

“Just one rainfall, everywhere in the community has turned to a pool and we cannot move in and out of our houses, what will be our fate when the rain continues intensely as predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Services (NIMET).”

The police in Ogun State said they have arrested two herdsmen, for allegedly robbing and defiling a teenager.

The suspects were identified by the police as Abu Adamu and Muhammadu Aliyu.

A statement by DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the State Police Public Relations Officer, on Sunday, revealed that the suspects were arrested after a distress call received by the police at Ewekoro Divisional Headquarters at about 1am.

Oyeyemi said the armed herdsmen had invaded a farm settlement at Afowowa Gbelu village in Ewekoro, attacking a family residing in the farm settlement.
According to him, the suspects ransacked the house of one Aminat Okeshola and made away with cash of N140,000.

After this, they were said to have taken a 16-year-old daughter of the family to the cassava plantation and took turns to defile her.

DAILY POST learnt that policemen from Ewekoro division went to the farm settlement, combed the entire area and arrested two of the suspects who hid in a nearby bush at the sight of the policemen. The third suspect with them reportedly escaped.

“The two arrested suspects were immediately identified by the victims,” Oyeyemi said.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the herdsmen have always been passing through the farm settlement with their cattle in the day time before they came back to strike on the fateful day,” he said.

The Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, DAILY POST reports, has ordered that the fleeing member of the gang be hunted and the case be transferred to the State CIID for investigation and prosecution

Kidnappers of unemployed graduate demand additional N10 million after family paid undisclosed sum

Unknown gunmen who kidnapped an unemployed graduate in Calabar, Cross River State capital have demanded additional N10 million ransom for his release.

It was gathered that the victim, Charles Tommy, a graduate of Engineering graduate from the Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD), Ekiti State, was abducted on September, 1, at about 9:30pm along Goldie by Mount Zion, Calabar South Local Government Area.

Eleven days after, the family said they haven’t heard anything from the kidnappers, despite paying a ransom for his release.

The victim's younger brother, Wonder Tommy, who confirmed the incident to a news portal on Thursday, September 10, said that Charles is yet to get a job since graduation. He said his brother was kidnapped in front of their gate and the kidappers are demanding additional N10 million after the family paid

“My elder brother was kidnapped right in front of our gate on Tuesday (1st September) evening around 9:00-9:30pm. The kidnappers got in contact with my dad (who is a pastor), negotiations began and they agreed to a certain amount which we paid on Friday (September 11). But still, they’ve refused to let him go," he said.

"They are requesting for additional N10million (N10,000,000). We don’t have such amount of money. And the most scary part is that, they wouldn’t let us speak with him. My brother is a very peaceful and quiet guy." he added.

Meanwhile, ABUAD Alumni released a statement on Thursday, demanding for the release of Charles.

"We call on all security agencies in Cross River State and beyond to find Charles Tommy and bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to book. We also call on well meaning persons to assist us in any way they can in locating Charles Tommy. #ReleaseCharlesTommy

Malami Lacks Unilateral Power To Amend Lawyers’ Professional Conduct – Akpata
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Edoman - 09-13-2020, 08:12 PM - No Replies

Quote:The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr Olumide Akpata, has said it is impossible for the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Abukakar Malami (SAN), to single-handedly amend the 2007 Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners.

Akpata said this in response to reports that Malami had amended the RPC to the effect that the NBA stamp and seal was no longer a requirement to authenticate papers filed by lawyers in court.

The sale of the stamp and seal is a major source of revenue for the NBA as lawyers cannot validly file court papers without affixing the stamp and seal.

Akpata faulted Malami’s single-handed amendments to the RPC in a press release on Sunday, titled, “Statement by NBA President on the Purported Amendment to rhe Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners 2007.”

The NBA President said decision to amend the LPC can only be taken by the General Council of the Bar.

Akpata said, “For the avoidance of doubt, the Legal Practitioners Act (as amended) confers the power to issue rules of professional conduct for legal practitioners, and any amendments thereto, on the General Council of the Bar (the ‘Bar Council’). The Bar Council comprises the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation (‘HAGF’), the Honourable Attorneys General of the thirty-six states of Nigeria, and 20 members of the NBA. Consequently, the RPC and any amendments thereto may only be validly issued after it has been deliberated upon and approved at a properly convened meeting of the Bar Council.

"As far as the NBA is aware, no notice convening a meeting of the Bar Council was issued to its elected representatives on the Bar Council and no meeting of the Bar Council was convened and/or held to deliberate on the Instrument. To that extent, our position is that no authority or approval was given for the amendment of the RPC. Consequently, the NBA maintains that the RPC has not been amended and enjoins all legal practitioners to remain calm and continue to conduct their affairs in the same manner as they did prior to the issuance of the Instrument.”

Quote:Flood Sweeps Away Two Children, Displaces Families In Lagos

Flooding in Oyebanjo Street, Ketu Lagos took two kids that are yet to be found .

Saturday recorded another tragedy as two yet-to-be-identified children were swept away as people battled flood after a downpour that lasted for hours and submerged many parts of the area.

The incident occurred at about 8:00pm at Oyebanjo Street, Ketu.

While the rain forced some residents to stay indoors, a few others suffered personal tragedies as the downpour and flooding led to destruction of properties.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency in a situation report on Sunday said a search operation was ongoing to find the missing children.

LASEMA’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, noted that it was discovered that the children were missing around 8:00pm on Saturday.

He said, “The agency received distress calls concerning the above. On arrival at the scene of the incident it was discovered that, around 8:00pm, two children had been caught up by floodwater.

“A joint team of responders comprising agency responders, LASG Fire Service and LASAMBUS was at the scene.

“The agency’s tiger team commenced a search and rescue operation along the path of the floodwater.

“Initial observations revealed a sloping topography with a direct channel of drain water into the canal. This has proven to be rather challenging to navigate. Rescue operation remains ongoing.”

Corruption probes: Lawan, Gbajabiamila dragged to court

on
 September 13, 2020

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has taken a legal action against Senate President, Ahmad Lawan and House of Representatives Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila.

SERAP is accusing them of failing to publish reports of all completed public hearings and corruption probes by the National Assembly since 1999.

The legislature recently held investigative hearings on Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) including the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF).

In the suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1065/2020 filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, SERAP is seeking an order of mandamus to compel Lawal and Gbajabiamila to release the findings.

SERAP is also seeking an order for the disclosure of the number and names of individuals, companies and MDAs indicted since 1999.

The rights group wants an order to stop lawmakers from directly getting involved in the execution of projects by MDAs, and to ensure the proper and effective exercise of their oversight functions.

The suit followed SERAP’s Freedom of Information (FoI) requests dated July 25, 2020.

SERAP’s lawyers, Kolawole Oluwadare and Opeyemi Owolabi, said there is no legally justifiable reason why the information should not be made available to Nigerians, and why the prosecution of indicted suspects should not be pursued where there is admissible evidence.

“Public officers are mere custodians of public records. There is legitimate public interest in the publication of the reports of these public hearings and probes.

The public hearings and probes can only serve as effective mechanisms to prevent and combat corruption if their reports are widely published”, the suit noted.

“The exercise of oversight functions and powers by the National Assembly to conduct public hearings and corruption probes in MDAs should be regarded as a public trust.

The National Assembly has a unique opportunity to enhance the integrity of its oversight functions on corruption matters in particular, and other constitutional roles, in general.”

No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.

A 30-year-old man was arrested in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, after he allegedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death after she left him for a new man, Gauteng police said on Sunday, September 13.

Police spokesperson Capt Kay Makhubele who confirmed the incident said the man identified as David Setshoa stabbed his 23-year-old girlfriend, Thato, to death with a knife in an alleged “rage of jealousy”.

The incident happened in Leboneng on Thursday evening. He was arrested on Friday and is expected to appear in the Temba magistrate's court on Monday September 14.

It was gathered that that David had been stalking Thato since she ended the relationship and moved on with a new man. According to close sources he had been telling people that he was going to kill her.

"Thato Gadebe has been stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend David Setshoa in Themba,Hamanskraal. The girl was initially in an on- and - off relationship with the suspect, and now was in a relationship with a new man," The Daily Talk News reports.

"The ex-boyfriend was stalking her after she found a new man. It got to our attention that he blocked her way as she was at a mall with her man. Police were called but said 'the man has not done anything to her and can't act against him' despite her(Thato) having a protection order against the suspect,"

"We can confirm that David also tried to kill her in the past. He allegedly took Thato to his mom's grave and promised to kill her and himself. Again, he tried to jump the wall at her place while carrying a gun."

Meanwhile friends and family members have taken to Facebook to mourn her death and call for justice.

Naked man 'carrying a severed hand' escapes from the house where he was being held hostage by smashing through a window

A naked man was seen carrying what is believed to be a severed hand after he escaped from the house where he was being held hostage.

The man broke through a window in order to escape from a home where he was being held captive by abductors.

It is understood the man had his hand badly wounded or severed before or after smashing through the front window of a house in Convamore Road, Grimsby, UK.

A picture from the scene showed the man carrying what may have been his own severed hand moments after.

The injured man sought refuge in a shop across the road after the incident late on Saturday afternoon, September 12.

Police and the ambulance service arrived at the scene and paramedics treated him at the scene before he was taken to hospital.

Convamore Road was cordoned off, with motorists being turned around.

Detectives were seen conducting door to door enquiries as they waited for Crime Scene Investigators to arrive.

It is believed the man was being held against his will at the house after being forced to leave another address in Cleethorpes earlier on Saturday.

The image, caught by a shocked passer-by, shows the man naked near the Lifestyle Express corner shop on the corner of Convamore Road and Ropery Street. His left lower arm is hidden by his body but in his right hand he appears to be carrying something.

There are reports he had been beaten in the house, possibly by two men, before he managed to escape by throwing himself through the window.

The house across the road from the shop had its ground floor window almost completely smashed out. It was sealed off by police after the incident.

Hike In Fuel Price: Protest And Be Dealt With – Police Threatens NANS

The Ogun State Police Command has threatened to deal with any member of the National Association of Nigeria (NANS) who tries to protest the recent hike in fuel price as well as the increase in electricity tariff.

The command, in a statement on Saturday, said it was in receipt of reliable intelligence that “some disgruntled elements were bent on disturbing public peace in parts of Ogun state, starting from Monday, September 14.”

The police, in the statement signed by the Ogun Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said, “In the course of identifying the persons involved and warn them against the planned action, a group of individuals who claim to be NANS executives South-West Zone D, led by one Kappo Samuel Olawale, in a letter addressed to the Command, has given the Federal Government a five-day ultimatum to reverse the recent hike in fuel price and electricity tariffs; threatening to unleash mayhem in Ogun State after the expiration of the ultimatum on Sunday 13th September 2020.

According to Oyeyemi, it is part of the students’ plans to block all major highways, including the Lagos-Ibadan and Lagos-Benin expressways; “recruit miscreants, street urchins, hoodlums, expelled, suspended and perpetual students over-running their courses at tertiary institutions in Ogun State and other states from the South-West, to swell their ranks and ensure their desired objective of spreading violence in the State” is achieved.

He said the decision by any group of students to embark on protest over the recent hike in fuel prices and electricity tariffs is unwarranted and therefore unacceptable to the Ogun State Police Command.

“The deliberate and selfishly designed violence-oriented protest planned for Monday 14th September, 2020, is not approved by the Ogun state Police Command, and will be resisted vehemently.

“No group will be allowed to perpetually hold the entire good people of Ogun state in perpetual fear of violence and harm to their persons and properties.

Olawale and his group are hereby advised, in their own interest, to drop their plan to block any highway in the state, and thereby cause confusion, disturbances and public apprehension. The law is not on their side on this.

“Officers and men of the command have consequently be put on red alert in view if this unwarranted threat.

“The police in conjunction with other security agencies have resolved, and have the capacity, to deal with such elements in the most decisive manner.

“Parents and guardians are therefore advised to call their children and wards to order. A word is enough for the wise!” the statement read in part”.

Expect 50% Increase In Prices Of Bread - Bakers Tell Nigerians
User Avatar Forum: Market Place
Posted by: Edoman - 09-13-2020, 02:23 PM - Replies (1)

Quote:The Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN) says a 50 percent increase in the prices of bread is inevitable.

Raji Omotunde, Lagos state chapter chairman of AMBCN, made this known in an interview with NAN on Friday.

He said the prices of baking ingredients have increased due to the coronavirus pandemic, adding that manufacturers are now running at a loss.

“Prices of all ingredients used for baking are too high, especially flour and sugar. Between March and September, there has been a monthly addition of N500 on a bag of flour and bakers have been bearing the additional cost,” he said.

“But as it is, baking bread and selling at the current price is no longer profitable. We have been appealing to the millers but they are groaning about the absence and increase in price of foreign exchange. The only option we have now is to cry out so that government can come to our rescue.”

Nura Musa, the public relations officer of AMBCN Abuja chapter, called for government intervention.

He said an increase in prices will affect sales which will consequently affect bakery jobs across the country.

Musa said government support is needed to reduce production costs, which according to him, is killing the bakery business.

“The instability of foreign exchange, high cost of diesel and other baking materials are reasons given by flour millers for the hike in the prices of baking materials,” he said.

“We have appealed to flour millers and other people involved in the selling of baking materials to reduce their prices but they have not responded.

“And that is why we are pleading with Federal Government to intervene in this matter by engaging the flour millers and baking material sellers.

“The association is one of the largest employers of labour in the country and if any bakery should fold up many people will lose their jobs.”

A bag of flour which sold at N10,500 before the outbreak of coronavirus, now sells at N13, 000.

Also, a bag of sugar now sells between N19, 000 and N20,000 depending on bargaining power against the pre-COVID-19 price of N14,000.

The alert on the possible increase of the cost of bread is coming at a time when there is outrage over hike in pump price of petrol and new electricity tariff.

In the verse above, the words, “perfect” and “complete” could have been interchangeably used. In other words, in the place of “perfect” above, you could also have “complete,” and vice versa.

“Perfect” here is dealing with standing strong; unmoveable. It also means “mature”; to come to a state of perfection or maturity, to be “full grown.” It’s a place of fullness; fullness of understanding, wisdom and knowledge; fullness of the Spirit. Hallelujah!

Thus, Epaphras, through the Spirit, was praying for the Colossian Christians to come to that place of maturity, standing strong, complete and perfect in Christ. God wants that in your life. He wants you to be a full-grown Christian, mature to do the things of God.

The more mature you are spiritually, the more you can actually fulfil God’s dream for your life. Therefore, set a goal for yourself for spiritual growth. Say to yourself, “I’m going to grow; I’m going to come to a place of maturity, where I only think spiritual, think mature in Christ, and full of God’s Word”; and proceed to achieve it.

Ephesians 4:12-13 says God gave ministry gifts to the Church for this purpose: “…the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.”

If it weren’t possible for us to attain the measure of the fullness of Christ, God wouldn’t tell us to go for it. This is His dream. Therefore, go for it by studying and meditating on the Word voraciously, and yielding yourself to the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

CONFESSION

In Christ dwells all the fulness of the Godhead bodily, and I’m complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power. I live the transcendent life in Christ, stable, unmoveable, and established in the faith as I walk continually in the light of the Word. Hallelujah!

I killed my aunty because she’s a witch – Man confesses in Ogun

Dansu Asogba, a 23-year-old indigene of Ogun State has been arrested by the police for allegedly killing his 60-year-old aunt, Iyabo Dansu over alleged witchcraft.

In a statement on Saturday, the Ogun State Police Spokesperson, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the suspect was arrested following a report by two children of the victim at the Ipokia Divisional Police Headquarters.

According to Oyeyemi, the children had reported that they were informed on August 22 that their mother, who was not suffering from any illness had died.

Oyeyemi hinted that the children of the deceased “stated further that since they were not suspecting any foul play, they decided to bury her without necessarily reporting to the police.

“But immediately after the burial, they heard information that the suspect, who is a nephew to the deceased was seen in her house on that fateful day, and shortly after he left, the woman was declared dead.”

This, he said, aroused the suspicion of residents as they threatened to carry out a traditional ritual to expose the killer.

Hearing the determination of the community to go spiritual about the death of the woman, Asogba reportedly came out to confess being the one responsible for her death.

The DPO Ipokia Division, SP Adebayo Hakeem, was said to have detailed his men to the scene where the suspect was arrested.

“On interrogation, he admitted killing the deceased, but claimed that he did so because of his belief that the deceased was responsible for the death of his first child and the subsequent miscarriage suffered by his wife.

“He confessed further that it was an iron rod he used to hit the woman on the neck which resulted to her death,” Oyeyemi said.

Meanwhile, the Ogun Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, has ordered that the case be transferred transfer to the homicide section of the State CIID for further investigation.

The Senior Pastor of Omega Fire Ministries, Apostle Johnson Suleman, has reacted to the apology offered to the founder of Living Faith Church, Bishop David Oyedepo by controversial On-Air Personality, Daddy Freeze, over an old clip.

Freeze took to his social media pages, to upload a video of him saying he was sorry of insulting the cleric and promised to cut out the confrontational way of addressing faith-based issues.

Suleman, in a tweet via his verified handle, warned Freeze that he can criticize but not insult.

According to the cleric, Freeze had insulted him too in the past, but he has forgiven him as instructed by the Bible.

“Just watched the video of Ifedayo Olarinde (Daddy Freeze) apologizing to Papa Oyedepo over the video he did 2 years ago.

“He equally did videos against me. I forgave because the Bible enjoins us to forgive. That’s what is expected of us.

“You can criticize but don’t insult,” Suleman wrote.

The resurfaced video had caused so much controversy that has led to Pastor Paul Enenche of Dunamis International Gospel Centre and David Ibiyeomie of Salvation Ministries tongue lashing Daddy Freeze.

Party Guest Stabs Celebrant To Death In Ogun State (Photo)
User Avatar Forum: Other Stories
Posted by: Edoman - 09-12-2020, 10:21 PM - No Replies

Quote:IgbereTV reports that a party celebrant identified as Omeika Josiah at Amini Awo village in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun state was stabbed to death by his guest, identified as Sunday Philip.

The suspect, Sunday Philip said to be an apprentice mechanic, arrived the party uninvited and was served a bottle of beer and a plate of spiced spaghetti.

In the course of the party, Philip got into an argument with a guest which resulted to a fight. The celebrant walked in on both men fighting and took sides with the guest identified as Jonah, and this got Philip angry. The suspect ran into a nearby house and returned with a knife which he used to stab Philip.

“One of the guests named Jonah sent a boy to move the sound system away from the scene when he noticed that food and drinks were pouring on the floor. But Sunday (Philip), an apprentice mechanic, prevented the boy sent by Jonah from taking the jukebox away and seized the sound gadget. Jonah tried to take the sound system from Sunday and a fight broke out between them," the source explained.

“When Sunday realised that he could not overpower Jonah, he rushed to a nearby house and brought out a knife to attack Jonah. Unfortunately, on his way back to Jonah, he met the celebrator, Josiah, who warned him not to disrupt his party. But Sunday then became angry that Josiah had taken sides with Jonah, so he stabbed him to death.”

A community leader who confirmed the incident said he was not aware of the plan to hold a birthday party in the village and had the deceased celebrator told him, he would have informed the village head, Chief Kunle Aromokun, to put in place adequate security.

“It is sad that the life of the celebrator was cut short by an uninvited guest at his own party. If the late Josiah had told me that he was going to organise a party to celebrate his birthday, I would have told the Baale (village head), who would have in turn invited members of the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) to provide security and prevent a breakdown of law and order at the event.” he said.

One of the guests at the party identified simply as Oladele said that the suspect lived on the same street as Josiah, but he was not invited to the party.

“Sunday (Philip) had left home for work very early in the morning. He had no idea that Josiah was going to throw a birthday party in the neighbourhood," said Oladele.

“He however came to the party when he got wind that it was Josiah’s birthday celebration. Only God knows what came over him when he launched into a fight with another guest and close friend of the celebrator. If not for the timely intervention of the community leaders and other residents, he would have been mobbed to death when he was nabbed after he tried to escape from the scene where he stabbed Josiah to death.”

Why NLC Won’t Protest Hike In Petrol, Electricity Tariffs Yet – Wabba
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 09-12-2020, 09:50 PM - No Replies

Quote:The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says the organised labour will soon come out with a position on the recent increases in prices of fuel and electricity.

Ayuba Wabba, NLC President, spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Saturday in reaction to the increases in the prices of petrol and electricity.

The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) announced that the pump price of premium motor spirit (petrol) has been increased to N151, 60 per litre from N145 with effect from September 2.

Also, electricity tariff was increased effective September 1 by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) from N30.23 per one kwh to N62.33.

Mr Wabba, who spoke on the issues, said the organised labour would not protest until the Central Working Committee met and agreed on appropriate action.Labour takes one battle at a time; it does not make announcement without backing its action,” he said.

He noted that NLC had remained consistent on neo-liberal policies, and would take appropriate action in respect of the increases in order to achieve desired result.

He also said that it was high time Nigeria started refining products locally to solve importation challenges. On the suspended planned protest against the Rivers govt, Mr Wabba said there was need to mend fences between the state and labour to ensure harmonious relationship

According to him, the will of the people should not always be taken for granted “as injury to one is injury to all”.

The NLC president called on other state governments to take appropriate steps toward addressing labour issues so as to avoid the wrath of the organised labour.

“We will take up any state that undermines the rights of workers. Workers should be conscious of their rights; there is synergy and we will confront recalcitrant employers to respect the law so that we don’t give room for sudden situations to rise,” Mr Wabba said.

He further said that the Rivers government and labour have concluded negotiations on minimum wage, and the enabling circular would be released for a collective bargaining agreement to be signed.(NAN)

DNA test leads to arrest in the killing of a New York teenager 35 years ago

DNA testing has led to the arrest of a man in the 35-year-old murder of a Rochester teenager in New York,

Wendy Jerome, 14, was raped and killed while delivering a birthday card in her neighborhood on Thanksgiving Day of 1984. Her body was found by a pedestrian near a school dumpster that night with "obvious signs of trauma," said Rochester police Capt. Frank Umbrino at an emotional press conference on Friday, September 11.

Timothy Lee Williams, 56, was arrested at his home in Melbourne, Florida, on Wednesday and arraigned as a fugitive, according to Monroe County Assistant District Attorney Julie Hahn. He was charged with second-degree murder in the homicide of Wendy Jerome, whose body was found in an alcove of Schools 33 and 11 near Webster Avenue.

In 1999, DNA extracted from semen collected during an autopsy was uploaded to the FBI's DNA database, but had no matches, Rochester Police Capt. Frank Umbrino said.

In 2017, the New York law was changed to allow law enforcement to search for familial matches to DNA collected in criminal investigations, and the department requested to have a familial DNA search conducted in Wendy Jerome's murder.

In July 2020, familial search results from the New York state crime lab generated new leads, which were narrowed down to possible suspects, according to Umbrino.

Law enforcement confirmed Williams' involvement with an additional DNA sample, District Attorney Sandra Doorley said,

Capt. Umbrino said that Williams, who was 20 when Wendy was killed, moved to Florida a short time after the brutal slaying. Williams, who is currently not employed, has reportedly visited Rochester several times in the past 35 years, he said.

"He did not know the victim, nor did the victim's family know him," Umbrino said, adding that the department is investigating whether Williams has been linked to any other cold cases. To date, he said, he was not.

In a tearful speech, the victim's mother thanked the police department for finally making a breakthrough in her daughter's case.

"I never thought I would see this day, and now it's here," Marlene Jerome said. "I just wish my husband had been alive to see this. He passed away in 2011 and I know he's up there with her and they're smiling, saying, 'It's over, it's finally over.'"

Angry ‘Farmer’ Threatens To ‘Shoot’ Buhari
User Avatar Forum: News
Posted by: Edoman - 09-12-2020, 10:59 AM - No Replies

Quote:An unidentified man in a Twitter video has threatened to “shoot” President Muhammadu Buhari.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9v8ihGtLuc

The 26-second video was uploaded on the micro-blogging site on Friday by a Twitter user @RomanusEke1  who wrote, “Mr President, this hardworking farmer has a message”.

“You must take note,” the ‘farmer’ said in his message to Mr Buhari. “Next time, if in this Nigeria you contest (election) again, I will shoot you down.”

Mr Buhari will not run for president again after completing his second term in 2023 because of the limit placed by the Nigerian Constitution.

The man in the video began his message in the Hausa language before he acceded to a background voice in the video that asked him to switch to English Language, perhaps to give the message a wider reach.

He was holding a knife and looked angry and frustrated.

The people around him in the video laughed and cheered him as he walked away after delivering his message.

Discontent

There has been widespread discontentment against the Buhari administration because of the general hardship and insecurity in Nigeria.

A report just released by a non-governmental organisation, Nigeria Mourns, said 1,165 people have been killed, while113 abducted in North-west Nigeria alone in the last eight months.

More than 82.9 million Nigerians are poor, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in May.

The NBS said in July that the inflation rate in Nigeria rose to 12.56 per cent in June, the highest in 26 months.

President Buhari, however, said “corrupt middlemen” should be blamed for the rising food prices in Nigeria. He has also highlighted several policies embarked on by his government to ensure economic prosperity for Nigerians.

“This year has indeed tested us in ways that globalisation has never been tested since the turn of the century. These challenges have disrupted lives and supply chains all over the world, and Nigeria has not been spared,” the president’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu said in a recent statement.

“But of all these problems, the most worrisome are the activities of “corrupt” middlemen (with many of them discovered to be foreigners) and other food traders who serve as the link between farmers and consumers found to be systematically creating an artificial scarcity so that they can sell at higher prices,” Mr Shehu said.

The accused who revealed his name as Daman was paraded at Mohan Garden Police Station on Thursday, September 10.

According to a police officer, on Wednesday September 9, a team from the station got a tip-off that an African national is likely to come at Poswal Chok, 55 Foota Road and can be apprehended with drug lot.

"During his search, in his black colour bag, one white colour polythene, containing some brown powder was recovered.

During interrogation, Daman disclosed that due to immense poverty in his native country, he came to India on a business visa. To earn quick bucks, he fell into the company of African aboriginals who were engaged in the trade of narcotics substance.

DCP (Dwarka) SK Meena said Mohan Garden is congested and a lot of aboriginals of foreign nationals are residing in the area. Most of them are tenants as owners prefer to let out their houses to them and charge them exorbitantly.

"Most of the time many of them are found to be involved in either cheating or in selling drugs. The staff try to keep a tab on their activities and remain vigilant by verifying their credentials when they come across them." said Meena.

She, however, appealed to medical and trado-medical practitioners within and outside the state to report any person seen or presented with bullet wound(s) to the police or any nearest security agency.

Suspected Fulani militia has killed a 60-year-old widow, a mother of 6 children and a 56-year-old man in Manyi-Mashin village, Zamandabo ward, in Atyap Chiefdom, Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The alleged fatal attack on the community took place in the early hours of Friday, 11th September 2020.
This is contained in a statement issued by the National Publicity Officer, Southern Kaduna Peoples Union, SOKAPU, Luka Binniyat.

Binniyat said the suspected Fulani militias burnt down almost all the houses in the village, looting and carting away valuables.

The statement explained that though men of Operation Safe Haven promptly responded, the militia fled before their arrival.

Recall that Fulani militia on the 8th of September, 2020 laid ambush on three Atyap youths from Atakmawei village in Zamandabo Ward in Atyap Chiefdom. The three young farmers were said to have gone to work in their Sugar cane farm about a kilometre from their village.

It said that armed herdsmen came from hiding and struck, descending on them with daggers and machetes.

Anthony Magaji, 25, a final year HND student with Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic, Zaria, was hacked down, axing his neck and head with macabre wounds which killed him instantly.

Isaac Thomas, 24, also an OND student of the same school, managed to escape with life-threatening injuries and is now under intensive care in a hospital, while the third escaped with less injury.

The statement further explained, “Meanwhile, we have received complains of farmers in Gora axis of Atyap Chiefdom, who say that Fulani men occasionally sneak into their farms and destroy large swaths of growing food crops, thus leaving them with a bleak prospect of hunger in the near future. All these gory development is taking place after a much-publicized peace deal was reached between natives of Atyap Chiefdom on one side and their long time settled Hausa and Fulani representatives on 23rd August 2020 in Unguwan Wakili, close to Zangon Kataf town.”

It added that on the 8th of September, 2020, an attack was launched again by Fulani militias at Kitsarapang village in Kizachi Chiwo of Kizachi community, Tsam Chiefdom in Kauru local government area, stressing that the attack claimed the life of Emmanuel David Yohanna, 13, leaving two persons grievously with gunshots namely Sunday Zango Stephen, 48 and Zakka John, 23 who are now receiving treatment at a hospital in Jos.

The statement explained that three decomposing corpses were found on Kaduna-Abuja highway on Sunday, 6th September 2020 who were among four persons that were abducted during a brazen operation last week at Maraban Rido, a suburb of Kaduna in Chikun local government area all in Southern Kaduna, who were killed after ransoms were paid.

The union requested the Federal Government, through Operation Safe Haven, under the Command of Major General Chukwu Emeka Okonkwo, to expedite action and bring to book all the Fulani militia that are currently occupying 101 Southern Kaduna Communities in four of our LGAs.

“We have furnished the world with the details and we are happy to note that eight of the displaced communities in Zangan District in Kaura LGA are now returning home as a result of more presence of men of OPSH. We are appealing to our youths to shun all forms of provocation and conduct themselves in manners that will not make them fall short of the law, not compromising their rights for self-preservation under the law,” the union appealed

According to Oyeyemi, the proprietor further said

Federal Govt announces plans to spend $2.3b on 7,000Mw power generation

The Minister of State for Power, Mr Goddy Agba has revealed that  the Federal Government plans to spend about $2.3 billion in the first phase of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) project, aimed at increasing the nation’s power transmission capacity to 7,000megawatts (Mw).

According to Agba, the objective was to increase the transmission capacity from the current level of just over 5,000Mw to 7,000Mw thereby drawing the country closer to it's electricity-reliance goal.

“The PPI is structured into various three phases, aimed at increasing power delivered to Nigerians to 7GW in first phase, 11GW in the second phase and 25GW in third phase." Agba said during the Nigerian Energy Forum (NEF 2020) Webinar in Lagos, tagged: Energy Solution for Sustainable Recovery.

“The project is to be executed at the cost of $2.3billion  forms the phase 1 of the  PPI and is funded by a loan from a consortium of German Banks for 85 per cent of the contract sum; while 15 per cent counterpart funding is provided by the federal government.

“A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) called FGN Powerco is in the process of being set-up following Mr President’s approval. The SPV will warehouse the project’s contingent liability for accountability.

“We have also constituted the Nigerian Project Management Office (PMO) with the sole responsibility of providing project management of the project on behalf of the government,” he said.

Agba also announced that the government will implement the Transmission Enhancement Programme with key development partners to improve the sector.
“The World Bank, African Development Bank (AfDB), JICA have raised $1.6 billion for Transmission Rehabilitation and Expansion Programme (TREP), which is ongoing now with major projects as follows:

“The Alaoji-Onitsha, Delta Power Station-Benin and Kaduna-Kano at $410 million and $29 million is intended to build a 330kV Double Circuit 62KM line between Birnin Kebbi and Kamba.

“The Lagos/Ogun Transmission Infrastructure Project (JICA) with $200 million, Abuja Transmission Ring Scheme (AFD)-$170 million and Northern Corridor Transmission Project (AFD & EU) with $274million,” he said.

Also speaking, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr John Momoh, said the new tariff put in place would address the challenge from stakeholders in power sector. He also said meters would be provided for enumerated customers in a year or two.

RHAPSODY OF REALITIES

SATURDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER.

FOCUS ON FULFILLING HIS DREAM

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world (1 John 2:15-16).

There’s no doubt, the coming of the Lord is nearer than ever. But the Bible says, “…for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition” (2 Thessalonians 2:3).

The Amplified Classic puts it thus: “…for that day will not come except the apostasy comes first [unless the predicted great falling away of those who have professed to be Christians has come], and the man of lawlessness (sin) is revealed, who is the son of doom (of perdition).”

This means there’d be people who had professed to be Christians, but they’ll fall away from the Faith; there’ll be an apostasy—people giving up their faith in Jesus, by choice.

This is already happening, and the major reason is the cares of this world; the deceitfulness of riches, and the lust for other things. So, what’s God looking at, and how should you walk in these last days? What choices should you make?

His counsel is what we read in our opening verse. Stay in Christ! Focus on the things of the Kingdom, and not on the transient pleasures of this world. Colossians 3:1 captures it beautifully. It says, “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.”

Focus your energies on fulfilling God’s dream, His vision of Kingdom expansion and world evangelisation. Refuse to be among those clinging to the things of the world, concerned only about their personal gain and comfort. They’ve been conquered by the spirit of the world. Jesus said, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36).

It’s so important that you live your life established in Christ, deeply rooted and founded in Him. Remain steadfast, unmoveable, doing the work of the Lord with joy. Hallelujah!

CONFESSION

Dear Father, thank you for calling me with a holy calling, and for granting me the inner strength to live for you. I’m deeply rooted and grounded in Christ; I’ve crucified the flesh with its affections and lusts. My only passion is the expansion of your Kingdom, propagating Christ’s love and His salvation to the ends of the earth. Hallelujah!

Dear Heavenly Lord, I am grateful and honoured for the privilege to be a minister of reconciliation. Through me, many are coming to the knowledge of the Gospel of Christ, which You’ve graciously committed to my trust.

My passion for the Gospel is fuelled more than ever before, and I dedicate my all to ensuring that Your righteousness is established in the hearts of men, all around the world.

I am conscious that I am of God, and have overcome the world, because greater is He that is in me, than he that is in the world.

I am a God-man; one in whom Christ dwells. I am God-inside minded; therefore, I have nothing to fear. I am born of God! I am a world overcomer.

I have overcome the world with its troubles, failures, and darkness; I have overcome every power, every force, and everything that is against me. It doesn’t matter what’s out there in the world;

I have overcome them all because Christ lives in me. I dwell in peace and safety; I am of good cheer because Christ overcame the world for me.

I acknowledge and walk in the reality of my divine life in Christ; who Christ has made me, and all that He’s bequeathed to me.

I reign and rule over circumstances.I refuse and reject anything inconsistent with the life of Christ in me. The evidence of the indwelling presence of Christ is seen in the quality of life I live.

I am living and enjoying the higher life in Christ, and my life is a testimony to those around me that indeed, there’s a higher life in Christ.

Thank You, Lord, for the indestructible and unconquerable life of Christ in me. Everything I am and represent exudes the Christ-life.

I walk in God’s wisdom, and triumphantly fulfil His perfect will, manifesting His virtues and perfections, in Jesus’ Name. Amen. Hallelujah!

God bless you

Nigeria becoming divided, a basket case under Buhari – Obasanjo hits president again

Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, has said the country is becoming a failed state and divided under President Muhammadu.
Obasanjo claimed Nigeria needs to be rescued from the brink of collapse.

He said this while delivering a speech titled, ‘Moving Nigeria Away from Tipping Over’ at a consultative dialogue attended by representatives of Afenifere, Middle Belt Forum, Northern Elders Forum, Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo and Pan Niger Delta Forum.
The event was held in Abuja on Thursday.

Obasanjo also said the country is becoming a ‘basket case’ economically

“Today, Nigeria is fast drifting to a failed and badly divided state; economically our country is becoming a basket case and poverty capital of the world, and socially, we are firming up as an unwholesome and insecure country.

“And these manifestations are the products of recent mismanagement of diversity and socio-economic development of our country.

“Old fault lines that were disappearing have opened up in greater fissures and with drums of hatred, disintegration and separation and accompanying choruses being heard loud and clear almost everywhere,” he warned.

Obasanjo further warned people beating drums of war and calling for secession, to remember that if Nigeria breaks into several nations, the citizens would still be neighbours and would need to interact with one another

Marafa: Crooks Within APC Want To Install Serving Governor As Buhari's Successor
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 09-12-2020, 08:15 AM - No Replies

Quote:*** Says he assisted Yari to become governor in 2011
*** Speaks on why Buni cannot reconcile aggrieved members

*** Says Yari is misleading Buni’s c’ttee

The political quagmire between the former Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari and Senator Kabiru Marafa has taken a new twist as the latter has taken a swipe at the former, saying that Yari was misleading the All Progressives Congress, APC Caretaker Committee chaired by the Yobe State governor, Mai Mala Buni.

According to Marafa who represented Zamfara Central in the 8th Senate said that Buni’s Committee was failing to reconcile aggrieved party members because he was listening to the former Zamfara State governor.

The former Zamfara governor said he told Buni to “get some sleep” because the APC in Zamfara is “intact”.

Yari had made the comment in response to reports that the APC National Working Committee led by Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe had plans to meet all the party’s stakeholders in Zamfara over disagreements by key chieftains.

Senator Kabiru Marafa who was reacting to the comments of Zamfara former governor, Abdulaziz Yari that the APC in the state was intact without any upheavals, said that some persons who he described as crooks within the APC were working to Install a sitting APC governor as President Muhammadu Buhari’s Successor come 2023.

Marafa also said that he assisted seriously to make Yari the Governor of the State in 2011.

Senator Marafa in an interview said: “I am not surprised by that statement coming from Yari and I am not bothered. If he says all is well with APC in Zamfara, I agree with him, let us wait for round two.”

While Yari heads a faction of the APC in the northwest state, Marafa, considered a solid grassroots politician, heads another faction

On whether Governor Buni shouldn’t bother intervening the APC crisis in Zamfara, Marafa said: “All I know is the committee is already failing, and they are failing because they are listening to the likes of Yari who always speak from the two sides of their mouth.

“There are a few good people in the committee that mean well to the party and I advise them to wake up and do what they are asked to do and leave the politics of 2023. Nobody can bring the position of national chairman to the north now.

“The moves by some crooks within the governors’ forum to hijack the party and install a serving governor and an expired one to succeed President Buhari will crash the way Yari’s selfish agenda crashed totally.”

Responding to insinuations made by Yari that he is part of the Peoples Democratic Party-led government in Zamfara, Marafa said: “I am still in the APC because I choose to, not because of fear of prosecution. I am part and parcel of the efforts that produced APC.

On whether Gov Mai Mala should go to sleep or double his effort is left to him (Mai Mala), the former Senator said, “All I know is the committee is already failing, and they are failing because they are listening to the likes of Yari who always speak from the two sides of their mouth.”

On his role in making Yari the Governor of Zamfara state, Senator Marafa said, “Let me put the record straight; in 2011 when Yari was desperate to become Governor, he came to my house in my village, the night PDP fraudulently denied me ticket in favour of the then incumbent Senator.

“Yari begged me to accept their ticket (ANPP) which at that time meant nothing looking at the fact that the Federal, State and Local Govt were all under the firm control of the PDP.

“He didn’t brought the ticket to my house because he loved me, ANPP offered me ticket because they where desperate to win the election, he pleaded with me to contest because he knew I have people behind me, they loved me and the people of Zamfara Central demonstrated their love for me by giving me 100,000 votes over and above the incumbent senator. The incumbent Senator got 93,000 votes and I got 203,000 votes.

“Sen Yarima who came from the same zone with Yari won marginally with less than 7,000 votes, PDP’s Sen Sahabi Ya’u won the other zone with a margin of about 10,000 votes. So, I brought the winning votes!

“The records are there, and the situation is still the same. It’s after he spent eight years as governor that he thought he was strong enough to uproot me but God taught him the lesson of his life. Or do you think it is easy for a poor senator to challenge a sitting governor, Chairman Governors’ forum with unlimited resources from his state, Paris Club and all other clubs you can think of?

“He could not for instance as a sitting Governor match my rally, he, in fact, could not organize one, my rally was played live on NTA go find and find out, i defeated him hands-down.”

Meet Florence Obi, University Of Calabar First Female Vice Chancellor

Quote:Florence Obi emerges UNICAL’s first female VC

Professor Florence Obi of the Faculty of Education has broken a 45-year jinx by emerging the first female Vice-Chancellor-elect of the University of Calabar, Cross River State.

She emerged top after a rigorous screening exercise involving 12 other candidates.

Obi will take over from Prof. Zana Akpagu, whose tenure ends on November 30, 2020.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman Governing Council, UNICAL, Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, who announced the emergence of Obi on Friday, congratulated her for emerging the first female Vice-Chancellor of the 45-year-old institution.

Nwaogu described Obi as “an astute educational icon” and prayed for the success of her tenure as Vice-Chancellor of UNICAL.

“You can see the tranquility in this governing council. What we assured the university community is that we were going to be transparent, open, fair, and just.

“There is a guideline from the Ministry of Education as to how to conduct interview for the appointment of a Vice-Chancellor. There are so many parameters we had to look into and that is exactly what we did,” she said.

She said Obi’s emergence is a victory for the women and said the 10th Governing Council expects her to build on what the outgoing Vice-Chancellor had done.

“What I expect from her is to look at what the outgoing Vice-Chancellor has done, governance is a continuum, start from where he has stopped and ensure there is integration even amongst all the people that contested with her,” Nwaogu said.

Also speaking, Obi promised to run an inclusive administration, adding, “I’m happy and return all the glory to God. I have just received my appointment letter from the 12th Council as Vice Chancellor-elect. The process was free and fair, and I promise to run an inclusive administration.”

Obi was a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, and former Commissioner for Women Affairs in Cross River State.

One of the candidates, Prof Joseph Asor, while reacting to the outcome, said, “We lost. Prof Florence Obi won. I came third. I have congratulated her. May God give her the strength and wisdom to pilot the affairs of our university. I thank you all for the support.”

Bandits Take Over Abuja While DSS, Police Go After Protesters
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion
Posted by: Edoman - 09-11-2020, 10:08 PM - No Replies

Quote:Nothing puts greater timbre on the parlous state of security in the country than the denudation of the virtual hedges and moats around the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and the disarray of the phalanx of boots in the city. Abuja was once assumed to be impregnable and residents lived with a false sense of security. But the terrorist blitzes in the national’s capital in 2013 and 2014 jolted many out of the reverie.

With the dawning of the Buhari administration, the bombing in the city petered out. The security forces also appeared to have nicked the insecurity in the north-east to subsidence at the time. I recall that in 2016, Tukur Buratai, chief of army staff, in a fit of showmanship presented a flag reportedly retrieved from the last frontier of the insurgents to President Muhammadu Buhari. But a few months after the “big show”, the insurgency metastasised. What really happened?

As a matter of fact, the FCT enjoyed a bit of calm from terrorism but with flickers of other crimes like armed robbery, one-chance operations, rape and car-jacking. However, as the Buhari administration lost its compass by sleight of abominable incompetence, the entire security bearing of the city and the country caved in – from Borno, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara to Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa bandits expropriated pieces of earth.

While some of us in Abuja had looked on the devastation of insurgency and banditry in other parts of the country from a ‘’safe’’ distance and with a smirk of privilege, “the doom” comes right at our doors. Really, the Buhari administration has failed spectacularly to secure Nigerians everywhere and anywhere. The government has also failed to secure the very corners from where it sits to preside over the country. What an extravagant failure!

Abuja is home to the headquarters of the DSS, the police, the army, the air force, the navy, the NIA, the DIA, and other security and paramilitary agencies. But right under the lenses of this octopus of agencies, bandits are attacking communities within the territory and on the fringes of the city. What a phenomenal shame! If they cannot secure their base and the areas around it with diligence, can they secure anywhere else in the country?

The DSS and the police, in particular, appear to be very dutiful in combating civil protests and in arresting dissenters. This is while the nation is taken up in galling insecurity. The expertise of these agencies is demonstrable on the civilian population, not on those who have picked up arms against the state.

Just a few days ago, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) issued an anticipatory warning to its officers, saying Boko Haram insurgents had set up hotbeds in Abuja and that they were oiling their cannons to launch attacks on five locations across the nation’s capital.

In an internal memo, H.A. Sabo, comptroller of enforcement at the customs headquarters, asked officers to be on the alert. He spelt out the locations in Abuja, Kogi and Nasarawa where the nurseries of these terrorists are bubbling.

“Information reaching the comptroller-general of customs (CGC) reveals the existence of Boko Haram terrorist (BHTs) camps in and around the Federal Capital Territory,” the memo read.

“Further reports have it that they are planning to attack some selected targets within the territory. They are reported to have set up their camps in the following identified enclaves: Kunyam Bush along airport road, off DIA Staff Quarters – Abuja; Robochi/Gwagwalada forest; Kwaku forest, Kuje, Abuja; Unaisha forest in Toto local government of Nasarawa state and Gegu forest, close to Idu town in Kogi state.

“Consequently, you are to be at alert and security conscious of your environment at all times.’’

What is most disconcerting in the memo is the tone of helplessness by the customs – “consequently, you are to be at alert and security conscious of your environment at all times”. What could be more dispiriting? If an agency in the security network is gripped by trepidation, then it is a serious cause for alarm. We should all be worried.

On Thursday, bandits pushing violence in the Gwagwalada axis of the FCT struck at Tunga Maje, a suburb of Abuja, reportedly kidnapping 20 people after a vehemence of brutality on the community. The community has become a select victim of the invaders who attacked the area some weeks ago. What is telling about the recent attack is that it happened just days after the customs’ memo was reported. There is no reprieve from torment for the residents of Tunga Maje who have to endure intolerable trauma. The government has failed them just as it has failed other Nigerians in states under the reign of bandits and insurgents.

Also, there have been coordinated attacks by bandits in other parts of the FCT – in Kuje where a traditional ruler was kidnapped and in Pegi where nine people including a 12-year-old were abducted. And with every successful onslaught, these gunmen are revivified and excited to inch into the city centre. There have been three reported attacks on a road in Life Camp so far.

Insecurity anywhere should concern us all. First, the security crisis was localised in Borno, then it mushroomed in Yobe, Bauchi and Adamawa; it took the form of banditry in the north-west, and now it is metastasising in the north-central — with Abuja as a trophy target. We must not discount insecurity anywhere. We are all potential victims.

One thing stands out: The Buhari administration has failed on security in all axes – even in its house!

Henry Ajomale: Tinubu Wants To Serve, Atiku Only Interested In Acquiring Power
User Avatar Forum: General Discussion

Quote:Lagos – Chief Henry Ajomale, former chairman of the Lagos State chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC), on Friday said Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the party’s National Leader is the best man to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

Even though Tinubu, a former governor Lagos, has not declared his intention to contest, many of his loyalists have started mobilising for him while many groups have also been formed in anticipation of his declaration.

Speaking in an interview with INDEPENDENT, Ajomale said if elected President, Tinubu will turn Nigeria around for the better exactly the way he did during his eight years reign as Lagos state governor.

“I am in support of the fact that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is the best man to succeed President Buhari in 2023. I will support that without any hesitation because Asiwaju Tinubu has traversed the whole country.

“He knows where the problems of each constituent are and the solution to it. These problems are diverse because the problem they have in Ondo is not the same as the one in Kano state.

“Tinubu was a governor and we know the role he played in the development of Lagos which makes it envy to other states. If a man can develop IGR from N600m to billions of naira.

"Even when the monthly federal allocation to Lagos state was stopped by Obasanjo, he was still running the governance of Lagos seamlessly.

“I believe if given the opportunity, he will turn Nigeria around for better. If people like Babachir Lawal from Adamawa and Tanko Yakassai can be rooting for Asiwaju, it goes to show you that the man is a pan-Nigerian.

“I am not saying he is a saint or he is perfect. There is nobody who is perfect except God. You may not like his face but you should like the idea and experience he has to make Nigeria better.

"He is a financial expert and so there is nothing the Minister of Finance can tell him that he doesn’t know.

“He knows where the money Nigeria needs is hiding and he can bring it out. That is the type of person Nigeria needs now.”

Ajomale also appealed to Nigerians not to make the mistake of electing former Vice- President Atiku Abubakar, who was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 general elections.

According to him, while Tinubu wants to turn Nigeria around to becoming one of the best nations in the world, Atiku’s motive is only to acquire power without a clear-cut agenda on what to do with it.

“We should not make the political mistake of putting somebody who has been contesting for the presidency for more than 20 years and he knows he cannot do it. He just wants to acquire power and after getting it, he has no idea about what to do".

“Let’s settle for somebody who has the interest of the people at heart, who can turn things around and make Nigeria become one of the best nations in the world. That person is no other than Asiwaju Bola Tinubu”

Following the outbreak of fire at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Ondo State, the Deputy Governor of the State, Agboola Ajayi has alleged that the inferno was an act of desperation by some persons.

According to Ajayi who spoke through his Media Aide, Allen Sowore, a probe panel must be instituted to unravel the cause of the mysterious fire.

On Thursday night, fire gutted the ICT section of the commission where 5141 units of card readers meant for the October 10 governorship election were burnt and destroyed.

The Deputy Governor who is the candidate of Zenith Labour Party, ZLP at the forthcoming governorship poll said, “Over 5000 card readers were lost in mysterious fire outbreak in Ondo INEC office less than 30 days to the election.

“All the authorities concerned must immediately institute a probe. Nobody should tell us any balderdash about this. It’s simply an act of desperation.”

Meanwhile, INEC had stated that the incident will not affect the already scheduled election, adding that the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
